El Monte DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide
A real DMV field office at 4000 Arden Drive — with real counter services and real drive tests — but only eight services and NO self-service kiosk, the one gap that defines this office. A reader who drives to El Monte for a registration renewal at a kiosk will find no kiosk, and the directories make it worse: one ranking guide calls it “full-service” with a “DMV Now kiosk: Yes,” and another pastes grocery-kiosk hours onto the field office as if it sat inside a Superior Grocers. This page separates the real office from the traps first, before anything else, because every wasted trip in the San Gabriel Valley starts with the wrong door, the wrong day, or the wrong kind of building. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

1The trap office — a real DMV, eight services, and no kiosk
El Monte is a real DMV field office, and that single fact is the whole point of this page — because the directories get it wrong in both directions at once. The El Monte field office is at 4000 Arden Drive, El Monte, CA 91731: a working field office with eight counter services, drive tests, and standard field-office hours (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday and Sunday closed). It is the office for El Monte itself and — because the cities around it have so few offices — the nearest office for Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, Alhambra, and South El Monte, none of which has a field office of its own. That is a large, car-dependent population served by one eight-service office, and the comparison in section 4 is the release valve for the days this office shows nothing.
The first correction on this page is the kiosk, because one ranking guide gets it flatly wrong. A guide at dmvca.info labels El Monte a “full-service DMV” and prints “DMV Now kiosk: Yes” in its summary table. Both claims are wrong. El Monte runs eight services, not nine, and it has no self-service kiosk: its own dmv.ca.gov page carries no “Kiosk Available” badge, no headline reading “This office has a self-serve kiosk,” and no “Self Service Terminals” entry in its services list — verified three ways on the same official page on November 3, 2026. Every other office in this cluster runs the full nine services with a kiosk on site. A reader who drives to Arden Drive for a kiosk task will find no kiosk. The cure is 0.8 miles away at the Superior Grocers kiosk on Valley Boulevard (10683 Valley Blvd, open daily 7:00 AM–10:00 PM) — section 6 has the full kiosk map. Do not let any page imply a kiosk exists at 4000 Arden Drive.
The second correction is the address confusion, because a second directory gets it wrong in the other direction. One directory page describes the El Monte DMV as “located inside a Superior Grocers store” and prints hours of “Monday to Saturday from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm and on Sundays from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm.” That is wrong twice over. The field office is a standalone building at 4000 Arden Drive — it is NOT inside a Superior Grocers store — and it is closed every Saturday and Sunday. Those are garbled grocery-kiosk hours pasted onto the office. The grocery kiosk is a separate location at 10683 Valley Boulevard, and its hours (7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily) are the kiosk’s hours, not the office’s. If a page sends you to a Superior Grocers store expecting the DMV counter, it has sent you to the wrong building; if it sends you to Arden Drive on a Saturday, it has sent you to a closed office.
The third correction is the Saturday claim, because an AI-written guide implies El Monte “might offer Saturday appointments” while other offices do not. It does not. El Monte is closed every Saturday and Sunday, on the official dmv.ca.gov calendar for November 1–14, 2026. No California DMV field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any page that claims a Saturday opening for El Monte — including any page that prints kiosk hours as office hours. The Superior Grocers kiosk in El Monte runs 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, the Superior Grocers kiosk in South El Monte runs the same hours, and the Ralphs kiosk in Temple City runs 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM daily; those are the kiosks’ hours, not the office’s, and the office is closed every weekend.
The fourth correction is bigger than one office: five nearby cities have no DMV field office at all. South El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra all return “Page not found” on dmv.ca.gov’s own field-office directory — South El Monte verified on build day, November 3, 2026, by a direct check of its slug, and the other four carried from the November 2, 2026 sweep. South El Monte is the most useful correction of the five: “South El Monte” appears in DMV kiosk listings, so readers routinely assume a South El Monte office exists. It does not. South El Monte’s DMV presence is a grocery kiosk (Superior Grocers, 1858 N. Durfee Ave.) — a kiosk is not an office. Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra readers use El Monte as their nearest office, and their teens take permit and drive tests there. If a directory sends you to a “DMV office” in any of these five cities, it has sent you somewhere that does not exist. The full list, with what each city actually has instead, is in section 4.
Why does one eight-service office carry this much demand? El Monte is a city of 109,450 people at the 2020 census (U.S. Census Bureau, labelled with its year — never an unlabelled estimate), the ninth-largest of the 88 cities in Los Angeles County, incorporated on November 18, 1912, in the San Gabriel Valley about 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, covering 9.56 square miles of land. The city calls itself “the hub of the San Gabriel Valley, where two major freeways — Interstates 605 and 10 — intersect,” and State Route 60 runs through it as well. That is a large, spread-out, car-dependent population — a commuter valley, a freeway crossroads, and five no-office cities — served by a single eight-service field office at 4000 Arden Drive. One more civic correction, because directories get it wrong: Los Angeles is the county seat of Los Angeles County — not El Monte. The rest of this page is the map for using this office well, for knowing where the kiosk actually is, and for knowing where to go when it shows nothing.
2Hours, services & the dates to avoid
The weekly pattern is the standard California field-office pattern, confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page (which prints a two-week calendar, November 1–14, 2026, showing the same pattern):
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Tuesday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Wednesday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late) |
| Thursday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Saturday – Sunday | Closed |
The Wednesday quirk is the detail that catches the most people: every other weekday opens at 8:00 AM, but Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM. Do not show up at 8:00 on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage — you will wait outside for an hour. Weekends are closed, full stop. No California DMV field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for El Monte — including the AI-written guide that implies Saturday appointments might exist and any page that prints kiosk hours as office hours. The Superior Grocers kiosk in El Monte runs 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, and the Ralphs kiosk in Temple City runs 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM daily; those are the kiosks’ hours, not the office’s, and the office is closed every weekend. There are date-specific exceptions in the near term, and they are the date warnings on this page: Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is CLOSED — Veterans Day, a state holiday, printed as “closed” on the office’s own November 1–14 calendar and on the DMV’s official holidays list. Do not plan a Wednesday-November-11 visit; Thursday November 12 reopens at 8:00 AM. Thursday, November 26, 2026 (Thanksgiving Day) is CLOSED, and Friday, November 27, 2026 (the day after Thanksgiving) is CLOSED as well, per the same official holidays list. Friday, December 25, 2026 (Christmas Day) is CLOSED, and Friday, January 1, 2027 (New Year’s Day) is CLOSED. Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24) and New Year’s Eve (Thursday, December 31) are NOT closure days — normal hours apply. Do not copy the federal holiday calendar onto the DMV: Juneteenth and Columbus Day are NOT on the DMV holidays list. State holidays can change hours at other times of year too, so confirm on the official office page the day before you go — see our California DMV holidays guide. And one timing rule that applies statewide: knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered after 4:30 PM, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test.
The office provides eight services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov — and the ninth is what sets it apart from every office around it. Unlike West Covina, Pasadena, Montebello, Whittier, Lincoln Park, and Bell Gardens, the El Monte field office’s own page carries NO headline “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line,” and its services list has NO Self Service Terminals entry. That missing ninth service is the whole story of this office.
| Service (official list) | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|
| Licensing Services | Driver licenses (new, renewal, replacement), ID cards, and REAL ID applications. REAL ID first applications require an in-person office visit with original documents — this is the single biggest reason people still visit in person. Start the application online first for a confirmation code; it shortens counter time. California also issues driver licenses regardless of immigration status (AB 60), accepting a foreign passport or matrícula consular as identity, with those cards marked “Federal Limits Apply.” |
| Testing | Knowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests, booked as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. The trap at El Monte is the kiosk, NOT the test — test-takers can use El Monte. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official page — check the scheduler rather than assuming it. “Testing” is listed generically, with no breakout. One ranking guide prints “Motorcycle test: Yes” and “Motorcycle skills tests M1 / M2 endorsements” for El Monte — that is an unverified competitor claim, not a dmv.ca.gov fact, and this page does not repeat it. |
| Title Transfers | Private-party sales, family transfers, and out-of-state titles. Bring the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office. |
| Registration | New vehicle registrations, renewals that cannot be completed online, and planned non-operation (PNO) filings for vehicles going into storage. Simple registration renewals are often kiosk or online tasks instead — at El Monte, that means the Valley Boulevard grocery kiosk, NOT the office, because this office has no kiosk of its own. |
| Plates, Permits, & Placards | Replacement license plates, temporary operating permits, and disabled person placards. Disabled placard applications are one of the few counter services with no online substitute — bring the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional. |
| Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged | Duplicate driver licenses, registration cards, and vehicle titles when the original is lost, stolen, or damaged. |
| Records | Driver and vehicle record requests. Note that simple record-copy requests are handled through out-of-office options in many cases — check eligibility before visiting. Kiosk record requests are available at the three grocery kiosks in section 6. |
| Request miscellaneous original documents | Less common document requests handled at the counter for paperwork outside the standard categories. |
| Self Service Terminals — NOT offered at this office | The missing ninth service. The on-site kiosk that West Covina, Pasadena, Montebello, Whittier, Lincoln Park, and Bell Gardens all have does NOT exist at El Monte. The nearest kiosk is the Superior Grocers at 10683 Valley Blvd (0.8 miles away, Mon–Sun 7:00 AM–10:00 PM). This is what makes El Monte different from every office in its comparison table — and it is stated here in the services section itself, not only in the kiosk section. |
Payment is the same statewide line printed on the office page: the DMV accepts cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order at field offices. The statewide phone line for everything is 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; TTY 1-800-368-4327). No office-specific phone number is published for El Monte — any “direct El Monte DMV number” from a directory is unverified, so use the statewide line. This page deliberately prints no fee dollar amounts: fee line items change and are gated until re-verified on dmv.ca.gov at build time, and the one figure that is safe to state is that booking itself is free.
One more scope rule before you book, because it saves more trips than any other paragraph on this page: routine services get no counter service at all. Simple registration renewals, eligible license and ID renewals, record copies, and replacement licenses are routed by the DMV to online, kiosk, mail, or phone options — the counter will not do them. Before driving to Arden Drive, check whether your task is actually an office task. The El Monte office page itself lists the tasks completable online with the DMV or a DMV-authorized partner: renew your vehicle registration; renew your driver’s license or ID card; driver’s license or ID card application (start online for a confirmation code — REAL ID first applications still need the in-person visit with originals); change your address; Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability; request a replacement driver’s license; special-interest or personalized plates; and request your driver’s record. If your task is on that list and needs no in-person step, do it online first. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the office. And if it is a kiosk task, do NOT drive to Arden Drive at all — use the Valley Boulevard grocery kiosk instead.
3Booking an appointment here
Booking happens only on the DMV’s official scheduler, and it is free. Here is the play for an El Monte visit:
- Go to the official DMV appointment scheduler (“Schedule an Appointment” on dmv.ca.gov).
- Choose your appointment type FIRST. This is the highest-value sentence in this section: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types in the official scheduler, with separate queues. Booking the wrong type means rebooking. Pick “office visit” for licenses, ID, registration, and most counter services; pick “drive test” for the road test. Drive tests are appointment-only — there is no walk-in path for them.
- Search by ZIP (91731) or “El Monte” and pick the Arden Drive office — not a partner address, not a kiosk address, and not the LA Metro IBC in Covina, none of which takes appointments. Watch the address traps, because they are real in this valley: the Tag That Registration Services partner sits at 10818 Main Street, the Superior Grocers kiosks sit on Valley Boulevard and Durfee Avenue, and the LA Metro IBC sits at 1365 N Grand Avenue in Covina. The field office is at 4000 Arden Drive. If the address you are navigating to says Main Street, you are heading to a partner; if it says Valley Boulevard, you are heading to a grocery kiosk; if it says Grand Avenue in Covina, you are heading to the LA Metro IBC, which is not a field office.
- Pick a date and time. Morning slots move fastest. If El Monte shows nothing on your date, widen the same search BY TASK (section 4): West Covina first for full services with a kiosk — but remember El Monte itself has no kiosk, so a kiosk task needs a grocery kiosk, not another office — then Pasadena or Montebello for full services with a kiosk. Offices serve all California residents regardless of home address, and cancellations open slots when you check back.
- Enter your contact details and confirm. Save the confirmation — you will need it if anything changes.
- To change an appointment, cancel it in the scheduler and book a new one. That is the two-step path the scheduler offers: cancel the existing appointment, then book the replacement. There is no penalty figure attached to a missed appointment on this page, because no official source states one — just rebook through the scheduler.
- Start the application online first where the scheduler offers it. A REAL ID or licence application started online gives you a confirmation code that shortens counter time. Bring the documents checklist for your task — identity, residency, Social Security number where required — because a missing document is the most common reason for a second trip, and no appointment type fixes it. See our documents checklist. For a REAL ID first application, bring one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two different documents proving California residency, all originals or certified copies — never photocopies. If your legal name has changed, bring name-change documentation too. A non-REAL ID card reads “Federal Limits Apply” and cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025.
- Do not book an appointment for the tasks the DMV routes elsewhere. Appointments should not be made for registration renewal, licence or ID renewal, record requests, or a replacement licence — there is no counter service for those. Do them online, at a DMV Now kiosk, or by mail instead. Booking one anyway wastes your slot and the office’s time. At El Monte this matters twice over: the office has no kiosk, so a renewal booked as an office visit is a trip that should have gone to the Valley Boulevard grocery kiosk.
Prefer the phone? Call 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). If you are heading to the office without an appointment, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option — walk-ins use the DMV’s QR check-in at the office (the old Get in Line system was discontinued in March 2026) — and bring everything on our documents checklist so you do not burn a second trip. This page does not assert an El Monte-specific walk-in rule either way: book first, and treat the same-day check-in as the fallback. More on the whole booking process in our California DMV appointment guide. This page prints no wait-time minutes: the live wait display on dmv.ca.gov changes hourly, and any snapshot quoted here would go stale within the hour — check the live display on the morning of your visit instead. One ranking guide claims “the Pasadena office, to the northwest, typically has shorter waits” and “quietest windows are generally Thursday and Friday afternoons” — both are unverified timing claims from a single site, not DMV facts, and they are not printed here as ones. The DMV publishes only live, per-moment waits, never an average.
4Nearby DMV offices compared: the El Monte trap, six full-service fallbacks, and a ring of no-office cities
Every real office in this cluster runs the same weekly pattern (Monday–Tuesday 8–5, Wednesday 9–5, Thursday–Friday 8–5, Saturday–Sunday closed) and the same six payment methods, and every office below was checked on its OWN dmv.ca.gov page — no service or kiosk claim is copied from another office’s nearby list. The differences are in DISTANCE and in KIOSK status — and that is the whole point of this section. Drive distances and times are driving routes computed with the OSRM routing engine on November 3, 2026, from one stated origin — El Monte City Hall, 11333 Valley Boulevard, El Monte, CA 91731 — free-flow (no traffic), for a typical drive. Readers starting elsewhere in El Monte should adjust: the city’s north side is closer to Pasadena, the east side closer to West Covina. Traffic on the I-10/SR-60/I-605 corridor changes these times sharply at rush hour — never treat a drive time as a promise.
| Office | Address | Drive from El Monte City Hall | Kiosk | Services — what matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Monte (this office) | 4000 Arden Drive, El Monte, CA 91731 | 1.5 mi / ~4 min | NO — its own dmv.ca.gov page carries no kiosk badge, no kiosk headline, and its services list has no “Self Service Terminals” entry (own page fetched 2026-11-03) | Only 8 services: Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates/Permits/Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, misc docs. Payments: the six-method statewide line. Full-service counter work and tests WITHOUT a kiosk — the El Monte difference. Use the Superior Grocers kiosk on Valley Boulevard for renewals instead (section 6). Do NOT drive here for a kiosk task. |
| West Covina (east — the full-service anchor) | 800 So Glendora Avenue, West Covina, CA 91790 | 7.4 mi / ~11 min | ✅ Kiosk Available — banner “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line” + Self Service Terminals in its services list (own page fetched 2026-11-03) | Full 9 services: Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates/Permits/Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, misc docs, Self Service Terminals. Payments: the six-method statewide line. The default fallback for any El Monte kiosk task — and the office El Monte teens use when El Monte is booked. See our West Covina DMV guide. |

| Rancho Cucamonga (east — the Inland Empire fallback) | 8629 Hellman Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730 | 26.2 mi / ~33 min | ✅ Kiosk Available — banner + Self Service Terminals (own page fetched 2026-11-03) | Full 9 services, identical list. Payments: the six-method statewide line. East on I-10; the fallback when every nearer office shows nothing. See our Rancho Cucamonga DMV guide. |
| Los Angeles Metro IBC, Covina (NOT an alternative) | 1365 N Grand Avenue, Suite 100, Covina, CA 91724 | 12.0 mi / ~17 min | NO | NOT a field office — an Industry Business Center. Hours Mon–Tue 7:00 AM–4:00 PM, Wed 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, Thu–Fri 7:00 AM–4:00 PM, Sat–Sun closed; its own page carries NO “Services Provided” list and NO kiosk headline. Do NOT drive to Covina expecting a counter for licences, REAL ID, registration, or title work (section 1, warning box below). |
One listing that looks like a public office and is NOT. The Los Angeles Metro IBC — 1365 North Grand Avenue, Suite 100, Covina, CA 91724 — Mon–Tue 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Wed 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Thu–Fri 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Sat–Sun closed. “IBC” is the Industry Business Center listing; dmv.ca.gov describes its Service Centers as providing “business services to vehicle industry customers.” It appears on the El Monte office page’s nearby list, always labelled plain “DMV Field Office” with no kiosk badge. General-public readers must use the El Monte field-office entry (4000 Arden Drive, 91731), not the IBC entry. Note the hours difference too: the IBC opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 4:00 PM, an hour earlier on both ends than the field office — another signal it is a different kind of door. It is also geographically closer to El Monte City Hall than Whittier or Bell Gardens (12.0 miles, about 17 minutes), which makes it the most dangerous trap in this cluster after El Monte itself: the nearest “DMV” on a map search for a Covina reader is not a DMV office at all. Do not present the IBC as a San Gabriel Valley DMV office, and do not drive to Grand Avenue in Covina expecting a counter.
Cities with no field office — do not print a field office for any of these. South El Monte has no dmv.ca.gov field-office page: its DMV presence is a grocery kiosk (Superior Grocers, 1858 N. Durfee Ave.) — South El Monte readers use El Monte. Rosemead has no field-office page either: Rosemead readers use El Monte. Temple City has no field office: Temple City readers use El Monte, plus the Ralphs kiosk on Las Tunas Drive. San Gabriel has no field office: San Gabriel readers use El Monte. Alhambra has no field office either: Alhambra readers use El Monte. Covina, Baldwin Park, and Azusa have no field office — their readers use West Covina. Duarte, Irwindale, Arcadia, and Monrovia have no field office either — their readers use El Monte or Pasadena. La Puente has no field office either — its readers use West Covina. Monterey Park has no field office either — its readers use Montebello. Alhambra, South Gate, Lynwood, and Commerce have no field office either — their readers use Montebello, Bell Gardens, Lincoln Park, or Los Angeles (Hope Street). Pico Rivera, Downey, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, and La Mirada have no field office either — their readers use Whittier, Montebello, or Bell Gardens. Walnut and Glendora have no field office either — their readers use West Covina. If a directory sends you to a “DMV office” in any of these cities, it has sent you somewhere that does not exist.
Two corrections worth naming, because directories get them wrong. First, El Monte is the nearest office to itself, not West Covina or Pasadena — and it is the nearest office precisely because it is the trap: the closest door is the one without a kiosk. A guide that starts its list at West Covina or Pasadena without naming El Monte’s missing kiosk sends you to a door that cannot do your kiosk task. Second, El Monte is a real office despite having no kiosk — the missing kiosk matters exactly once, when your task is a renewal or a record copy and you were hoping to use the office machine. For licences, tests, REAL ID, and title transfers, El Monte does the same work as the other offices. Do not rule it out on kiosk grounds — but do not drive to Arden Drive for a renewal, either, when a grocery kiosk on Valley Boulevard in El Monte does it to 10:00 PM.
5Frequently asked questions
El Monte: the straight answers to the questions San Gabriel Valley residents actually ask — answered from official sources, verified November 3, 2026.
What are the hours of the El Monte DMV?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. The late opening is WEDNESDAY, not Tuesday — a reader who arrives at 8:00 AM on Wednesday finds a closed office, and a reader who arrives at 9:00 AM on Tuesday has already waited an hour for nothing. The date-specific exceptions: Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed (Veterans Day, a state holiday), and Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2026 are closed (Thanksgiving Day and the day after). Christmas Day (Friday, December 25, 2026) and New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1, 2027) are also closed. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve 2026 are normal-hours days. State holidays can change hours — confirm on the official office page before you go. No field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for El Monte.
Is the El Monte DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?
No — the El Monte field office is closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, on the official dmv.ca.gov calendar. Ignore any page that implies the DMV offers Saturday appointments — one AI-written guide implies El Monte ‘might offer Saturday appointments,’ and that is wrong. Those are the grocery kiosks’ hours, not the office’s. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, the nearby grocery kiosks cover weekends: Superior Grocers in El Monte (10683 Valley Blvd, 7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily), Superior Grocers in South El Monte (1858 N Durfee Ave, 7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily), and Ralphs in Temple City (9470 Las Tunas Dr, 6:00 AM–1:00 AM daily).
What is the address of the El Monte DMV?
4000 Arden Drive, El Monte, CA 91731. Beware pages describing the office as ‘located inside a Superior Grocers store’ — the field office is a standalone building at 4000 Arden Drive, and it is NOT inside a grocery store. The grocery kiosk is a separate location at 10683 Valley Boulevard. ‘4000 Arden Dr’ is the same address in short form. The official office page is dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/el-monte/.
What is the phone number for the El Monte DMV?
1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV line (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; TTY 1-800-368-4327). There is no published direct number for the El Monte office — any ‘direct El Monte DMV number’ from a directory is unverified. Use the statewide line.
Do I need an appointment to visit the El Monte DMV?
Appointments are recommended and booking is free on the official DMV scheduler — and an appointment beats a walk-in at any hour. If you go without one, the DMV’s same-day check-in is now QR check-in at the office (the old Get in Line system was discontinued in March 2026), and you should expect to wait. The firm exception is the behind-the-wheel drive test, which is appointment-only with no walk-in path. This page does not assert an El Monte-specific walk-in rule either way — book first, and check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option. Do not book at all for a registration renewal, licence or ID renewal, record request, or replacement licence — there is no counter service for those; use online, a kiosk, or mail.
Does the El Monte DMV have a self-service kiosk?
No — and this is the single most important fact on the page. The El Monte field office has NO on-site kiosk: its own dmv.ca.gov page carries no ‘Kiosk Available’ badge, no kiosk headline, and no ‘Self Service Terminals’ entry in its services list. It is the only office in its own top-10 nearby list without one. One ranking guide prints ‘DMV Now kiosk: Yes’ for El Monte — that is flatly wrong. The cure is the Superior Grocers kiosk at 10683 Valley Blvd in El Monte (Mon–Sun 7:00 AM–10:00 PM, 0.8 miles from El Monte City Hall), plus the Superior Grocers kiosk in South El Monte (1858 N Durfee Ave, Mon–Sun 7:00 AM–10:00 PM) and the Ralphs kiosk in Temple City (9470 Las Tunas Dr, Mon–Sun 6:00 AM–1:00 AM). Kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records only — they do NOT issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses. More in the kiosk section below and our DMV kiosk guide.
What services does the El Monte DMV offer — does it do driving tests?
Eight services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov: Licensing Services; Testing; Title Transfers; Registration; Plates, Permits, & Placards; Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged; Records; and Request miscellaneous original documents. The missing ninth service is Self Service Terminals — there is no kiosk here. Yes — behind-the-wheel drive tests are bookable here, as a separate appointment type from a general office visit. The trap at El Monte is the kiosk, not the test. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official page, so check the scheduler rather than assuming it — one ranking guide prints ‘Motorcycle test: Yes,’ which is an unverified competitor claim, not a dmv.ca.gov fact. Payments accepted: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order.
Is there a DMV field office in South El Monte? In Rosemead? In Temple City? In San Gabriel? In Alhambra?
No to all five. South El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra have NO field office — their dmv.ca.gov field-office pages all return ‘Page not found,’ verified by direct checks (South El Monte on build day, November 3, 2026; the other four on November 2, 2026). South El Monte readers use El Monte for office business, plus the Superior Grocers kiosk on Durfee Avenue for renewals. Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra readers use El Monte as their nearest office, plus the Ralphs kiosk in Temple City for renewals. The same is true of Covina, Baldwin Park, Azusa, Duarte, Irwindale, Arcadia, Monrovia, La Puente, Monterey Park, South Gate, Lynwood, Commerce, Pico Rivera, Downey, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, La Mirada, Walnut, and Glendora — none of those cities has a field office either. Covina also hosts the LA Metro IBC — but that is an industry business center, not a field office.
What should I bring for a REAL ID, licence, or registration visit?
For a REAL ID first application: one proof of identity (valid US passport or passport card, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or similar), your Social Security number, and two different documents proving California residency showing your first and last name and the mailing address that will appear on the card (mortgage bill, home utility or cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, bank statement, or similar) — originals or certified copies, never photocopies. If your legal name has changed, bring name-change documentation too. For a licence or registration visit, bring the documents on our documents checklist for your task. A missing document is the most common reason for a second trip, and no appointment type fixes it.
If the El Monte DMV is fully booked, which nearby office should I try instead?
It depends on your TASK — and this is the most important answer on the page. For counter work and tests but NOT kiosk tasks: El Monte is the office itself, so the question is where to go instead — West Covina (800 So Glendora Ave, 7.4 mi / ~11 min) is the default fallback, with full services and a kiosk on site. For full services (anything, including REAL ID and drive tests) plus a kiosk: Pasadena (49 S Rosemead Blvd, 7.5 mi / ~14 min), Montebello (424 N Wilcox Ave, 8.3 mi / ~16 min), Lincoln Park (3529 N Mission Rd, 12.1 mi / ~17 min), Whittier (9338 S Painter Ave, 12.8 mi / ~18 min), Bell Gardens (6801 S Garfield Ave, 16.4 mi / ~23 min), Los Angeles Hope Street (3615 S Hope St, 17.5 mi / ~23 min), Pomona (1600 S Garey Ave, 19.0 mi / ~25 min), Glendale (1335 W Glenoaks Blvd, 21.5 mi / ~27 min), or Rancho Cucamonga (8629 Hellman Ave, 26.2 mi / ~33 min). Never the LA Metro IBC in Covina for counter work — it is an industry business center, not a public office. Pick by task first, then by drive time — never by an invented wait-time ranking.
Can I renew my vehicle registration at a kiosk or a DMV business partner instead of going to the El Monte office?
Yes for renewals and records — no for REAL ID, tests, or first licences. The three grocery kiosks in the cluster (El Monte, South El Monte, and Temple City — all open daily, Temple City’s Ralphs to 1:00 AM) handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records, including weekends when the office is closed. The DMV business partner actually inside El Monte city limits is Tag That Registration Services LLC at 10818 Main St (1-626-434-9988; Mon–Fri 10 AM–6:30 PM) — call before visiting; partners charge their own additional fee, so ask the price first. Partners handle registration-type work only — they cannot issue licences, run tests, or process REAL ID.
How do I get to the El Monte DMV by bus or train, and is there parking information available?
By rail, El Monte has a Metrolink station — but there are TWO different ‘El Monte Station’ facilities about a mile apart, so name the right one. The Metrolink station is at 10925 Railroad Street, on the San Bernardino Line (L.A. Union Station to San Bernardino–Downtown), with Foothill Transit route 492 and Metro routes 76 and 268 connecting there. The El Monte Bus Station is at 3501 Santa Anita Avenue, the Metro Busway J Line’s eastern terminus, served by Foothill Transit lines including 190, 194, 269, and 488. Neither station is at the DMV office, so this page makes no station-to-office walk claim — use the Foothill Transit / Metrolink trip planner and check the stop for 4000 Arden Drive before you travel; this page prints no stop-to-office walk claim, timetable, or frequency, because schedules change and a stale timetable is worse than no timetable. On parking: no official or credible source describes the Arden Drive office’s lot, capacity, street parking, or accessibility spaces, so this page asserts nothing about parking — arrive early and allow time to park, because the office does not publish parking details. One ranking guide claims ‘a free lot serves the office; it can fill during busy mornings, with street parking nearby’ — that is an unsourced competitor claim, not a verified parking fact, and it is not printed here as one.
6Kiosks: no machine at Arden Drive — the Valley Boulevard cure
El Monte is the one office in this cluster where the kiosk story is a warning, not a feature. The field office has NO self-service terminal on site, and the grocery kiosks below run on store hours, including weekends and late nights when the office is closed. Kiosk hours follow the host store’s hours, so confirm on dmv.ca.gov before a late-night trip. And remember the scope rule: kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records only. They do not issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses — and neither do the partners in the next section.
| Kiosk | Hours | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| El Monte field office (on site) 4000 Arden Drive, El Monte, CA 91731 | — | NO kiosk here. There is no self-service terminal at this office — no kiosk headline, no “Self Service Terminals” service, no “Kiosk Available” badge on its own dmv.ca.gov page. Do not drive to Arden Drive for a kiosk task |
| Superior Grocers in El Monte 10683 Valley Blvd., El Monte, CA 91731 | Mon–Sun 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM | The cure for the trap: 0.8 miles, about 3 minutes, from El Monte City Hall — the closest kiosk to the office itself. A reader who drove to Arden Drive for a kiosk task can drive 3 minutes to Valley Boulevard and finish it. The grocery kiosk is IN El Monte city limits, but it is NOT at the DMV office — two different addresses, two different buildings |
| Superior Grocers in South El Monte 1858 N. Durfee Ave., South El Monte, CA 91733 | Mon–Sun 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM | 2.0 miles, about 5 minutes, from El Monte City Hall. South El Monte has no field office — this kiosk is its DMV presence. The kiosk that makes readers think South El Monte has an office — it has a kiosk, not an office |
| Ralphs in Temple City 9470 Las Tunas Dr., Temple City, CA 91780 | Mon–Sun 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM | 4.5 miles, about 8 minutes, from El Monte City Hall. The latest-opening kiosk in the cluster — 1:00 AM close, the only one open past 10:00 PM, and the only kiosk option when the office and the two Superior Grocers kiosks are all closed for the night. Temple City has no field office; its readers use El Monte |
The count, stated carefully so it cannot be misread: zero kiosks on site at the El Monte field office, plus three grocery kiosks on the office page’s official nearby list (El Monte, South El Monte, Temple City) — three kiosk locations in the El Monte-page cluster. Never “three kiosks in El Monte” without the distinction: the El Monte grocery kiosk is inside El Monte city limits, but it is NOT at the DMV office. For a South El Monte reader, that distinction is the whole story: the kiosk is why a South El Monte resident can renew a registration without ever leaving the valley, and also why a South El Monte resident still has to drive to El Monte for a REAL ID or a drive test. Do NOT import kiosks from the West Covina page’s nearby list into this page: the Superior Grocers kiosks in Baldwin Park, Covina, and City of Industry are on the West Covina page’s list, not on the El Monte page’s list. Payment at kiosks: cash, credit card, and debit card accepted; one payment method per transaction; a 1.95% service fee applies to credit and debit card transactions (DMV kiosk FAQ). Bring the renewal notice (with its Renewal Identification Number) or the current registration card; for a replacement card or sticker bring the plate number and the last five digits of the VIN; for records bring the licence or ID card. More on kiosk-eligible tasks in our DMV kiosk guide.
The kiosk-versus-office decision is the page’s practical payoff, so here it is plainly. If the task is a registration renewal, a PNO filing, or a record copy, a grocery kiosk (open to 10:00 PM or 1:00 AM daily, including weekends when every field office is closed) beats any office visit — the Superior Grocers kiosk in El Monte runs 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day, and the Ralphs kiosk in Temple City runs 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM every day. If the task is a REAL ID, a first licence, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the Arden Drive office. If the renewal needs a smog check or has a hold, the kiosk will not clear it — then it becomes an office task. And if the task is a kiosk task in El Monte, do NOT drive to the El Monte field office (no kiosk) — use the Superior Grocers kiosk on Valley Boulevard instead, 0.8 miles away.
7DMV partners near El Monte: registration help for an extra fee
Partner caution, in the DMV’s own wording: “Businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, often with much shorter wait times (if any!). Additional fees may be applied by this partner.” Partners handle registration-type work only; they do not issue licences, run tests, or process REAL ID. Ask the price before handing over paperwork. The partner list below is the official dmv.ca.gov listing for this cluster, re-verified November 3, 2026 — commercial “DMV registration” sites and directory listings are not DMV partners and are not presented as such.
| Partner | Address & phone | Hours (dmv.ca.gov) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tag That Registration Services LLC (in El Monte — the only in-city partner verified on its own dmv.ca.gov page) | 10818 Main St, El Monte, CA 91731 — 1-626-434-9988 | Mon–Fri 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM, Sat–Sun closed | The one dmv.ca.gov-listed partner actually inside El Monte city limits, with real hours printed on its own partner page. Services listed on its page include new registration, registered/legal owner transfers, and renew registration & print sticker. A search-result snippet shows a different phone for this partner — the own-page number (1-626-434-9988) is the one printed here; the snippet number is not printed. |
| Paqueteria El Monte (in El Monte) | 10930 Valley Blvd, El Monte, CA 91731 — 1-714-351-5657 | Call before visiting — no hours printed here | Its own dmv.ca.gov page shows a “closed” calendar every day, November 1–14 — a data anomaly, NOT hours, so no hours are printed here. Call before visiting. |
| American Power Enterprises LLC (West Covina) | 324 N Azusa Ave, West Covina, CA 91791 — 1-626-919-1800 | Mon–Fri 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Sat 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Sun closed | The nearest partner with real Saturday hours, in West Covina. Services listed on its page include new registration, registered/legal owner transfers, and renew registration & print sticker. |
| LA Auto Registration Services (La Puente) | 17227 E Valley Blvd, La Puente, CA 91744 — 1-323-233-1169 | Mon–Fri 10:00 AM – 7:30 PM, Sat 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM, Sun closed | The latest-closing partner in the cluster (7:30 PM weekdays). Address, phone, and hours all printed on its own dmv.ca.gov partner page. |
Two warnings before you use this table. First, the partner-hours anomaly: several partner listings on dmv.ca.gov show “Mon–Sun Closed” — that is a data anomaly, not hours, and this page never prints “Mon–Sun Closed” as a partner’s hours. For any partner showing that pattern, the page prints name, address, and phone only, with a call-first caution. Second, the non-partner warning: no other El Monte registration business was verified against a dmv.ca.gov business-partner page in this check, so no other business is presented here as a DMV partner. A search listing is not a DMV partner page. If a business calls itself a “DMV” service without appearing on dmv.ca.gov’s partner list, treat it as a private business, not as the DMV — and never hand it a task it cannot do, because no partner can issue a licence, run a test, or process a REAL ID.
8Drive tests at El Monte: what to expect
“Testing” is on the El Monte field office’s official services list, so behind-the-wheel drive tests are bookable here — as a separate appointment type in the official scheduler, not as part of a general office visit. That separation is the most common booking mistake in the whole DMV system, and it is worth repeating for a valley where the next office is a freeway drive away: book “drive test,” not “office visit,” for the road test, or you will be rebooking instead of testing. Drive tests are appointment-only — there is no walk-in path for them. The trap at El Monte is the kiosk, not the test — test-takers can use El Monte, and the missing kiosk is irrelevant to a drive test, because a test does not need a kiosk. Do not rule El Monte out on kiosk grounds. The test itself follows the standard California examiner pattern — residential speed control, full stops, mirror and blind-spot discipline, lane discipline, and parking — and the best preparation is the same everywhere: practice on the skills in our driving test appointment guide and driving test tips, not a memorized route. This page deliberately prints no street-by-street examiner route for El Monte: no verified turn-by-turn route text was found for this office, and an invented route would be worse than no route.
The car-qualification checklist is statewide and worth running the night before, because a failed car check costs the appointment: valid registration, current insurance, working brake lights, turn signals, horn, and mirrors — and a licensed driver who brings the test-taker and waits at the office. The examiner’s pre-drive check covers the brakes (foot and parking), horn, turn signals front and back, brake lights, tires, an unobstructed windshield, working doors and windows, a driver-side window that rolls down, seat belts, two mirrors, two plates with current registration, the defroster, hazard lights, headlights, and wipers, and asks the test-taker to locate and demonstrate the controls (window, wipers, signals, brake lights, horn, parking brake, defroster, hazards, headlights) and arm signals. The skills tested are left and right turns, stops at intersections, lane changes, straight-line reversing, curbside parking, traffic checks, and space management, with freeway driving only briefly or rarely. What loses points everywhere in California: missed mirror and blind-spot checks before lane changes, rolling stops, following too closely, speed mismatched to conditions (not just the posted limit), and pedestrian-awareness failures at crosswalks and intersections. Two more scope notes. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for El Monte on its official page, so check the scheduler rather than assuming a motorcycle test is offered here — “Testing” is listed generically, with no breakout. And knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered after 4:30 PM, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test — take a morning slot for any test, drive or written, and treat the Wednesday 9:00 AM opening as a hard constraint on early appointments that day. After a failed test, a waiting period applies before retesting and the number of attempts is limited — the scheduler shows when you can rebook; no specific wait or attempt numbers are printed here without a Handbook citation. Parallel parking (other than pulling alongside a curb) is generally not required in the California test — phrased as “generally” only, never as an official guarantee.
Which office for the test, if El Monte shows no drive-test slot? West Covina (7.4 miles, about 11 minutes) is the same work closest by — and note that El Monte having no kiosk is irrelevant to a drive test; do not rule El Monte out for a test on kiosk grounds, and do not rule West Covina in for a test on kiosk grounds either. Pasadena (7.5 miles, about 14 minutes) is the second choice; Montebello (8.3 miles, about 16 minutes) is the third; Lincoln Park (12.1 miles, about 17 minutes) is the fourth. Whittier, Bell Gardens, Los Angeles (Hope Street), Pomona, Glendale, and Rancho Cucamonga are the farther alternatives. And do NOT book the test at the Los Angeles Metro IBC in Covina (1365 N Grand Avenue) — it is an Industry Business Center for vehicle-industry customers, not a public counter, and it does not take a general drive-test appointment for an El Monte reader. For El Monte’s teen population, one note: El Monte teens take permit and drive tests at this office, and Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra teens use El Monte too, because none of those cities has an office of its own — frame that as geographic adjacency, never as an assigned catchment, because dmv.ca.gov does not assign catchment areas. El Monte has five active public high schools inside city limits or with an El Monte mailing address, with 4,283 students enrolled in the 2025–26 school year (third-party figures from Stallion Drivers Ed, labelled as such). This page prints no “easiest/hardest office to pass” ranking and no pass-rate percentage for El Monte, because no credible, current figure exists.
9Transit, parking & getting there
By rail, El Monte has a Metrolink station — but there are two different “El Monte Station” facilities about a mile apart, and the page must never say “El Monte Station” without saying which one. The Metrolink station is at 10925 Railroad Street, El Monte, between Santa Anita and Tyler Avenues north of Valley Boulevard — a San Bernardino Line station (L.A. Union Station to San Bernardino–Downtown), one of the two intermediate stops on the line’s opening day, October 26, 1992. Connecting service at the Metrolink station includes Foothill Transit route 492 (stops on Santa Anita Avenue), Metro routes 76 and 268, and El Monte Transit city buses. The El Monte Bus Station is at 3501 Santa Anita Avenue, El Monte — a large regional bus station adjacent to I-10, the Metro Busway J Line’s eastern terminus and one of the busiest bus stations in the region. Do not merge the two: the Metrolink station and the bus station are different places, about a mile apart, and neither one is at the DMV office, so this page makes no station-to-office walk claim at all.
By bus, the El Monte Bus Station is served by Foothill Transit lines including the Silver Streak, 178, 190, 194, 269, 270, 282, 486, 488, 492, and 494 — including 190 (El Monte Station to Cal Poly Pomona via Ramona Boulevard), 194 (El Monte Station to Cal Poly Pomona via Valley Boulevard), 269 (El Monte Station to Montebello, via Santa Anita and Durfee), 488 (Glendora–West Covina–El Monte Station), and 178 (El Monte Station to Puente Hills Mall via West Covina) — plus Metro Bus lines J Line (910/950), 70, 76, 267, 268, 287, Express 577, and Metro Micro El Monte. Use the Foothill Transit / Metrolink trip planner and check the stop nearest 4000 Arden Drive before you travel. Never print a “get off at X, walk Y minutes” instruction, a timetable, or a frequency for any route — the schedules change, and a stale timetable is worse than no timetable.
Parking is unsourced. No official or credible source describes the office’s lot, capacity, street parking, or accessibility spaces. This page does not assert “free parking,” “large lot,” or any parking-difficulty claim for the El Monte field office. One ranking guide claims “a free lot serves the office; it can fill during busy mornings, with street parking nearby” — that is an unsourced competitor claim, not a verified parking fact, and it is not printed as one. The only tip offered is the honest one: arrive early and allow time to park, because the office does not publish parking details. No street-by-street driving directions appear anywhere on this page, for the same reason — the office address is the fact, plus the labelled OSRM drive times in section 4; the route is the reader’s navigation app.
10El Monte & the catchment: who this office actually serves
El Monte is a city in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California — about 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It sits on the valley floor between the San Gabriel Mountains to the north and the Puente Hills to the south, covering 9.56 square miles of land. Its population was 109,450 at the 2020 United States census (U.S. Census Bureau, labelled with its year — never an unlabelled estimate), making it the ninth-most-populous city in Los Angeles County out of 88. The 2010 census was 113,475. Do not print the city’s own “approximately 120,000” figure from its “About El Monte” page — that figure is stale against the 2020 census. Los Angeles is the county seat of Los Angeles County — not El Monte. Do not misstate this: the county-seat flagship office is the Los Angeles office, not El Monte.
The city was incorporated on November 18, 1912 — and it calls itself “the hub of the San Gabriel Valley, where two major freeways — Interstates 605 and 10 — intersect,” with State Route 60 running through it as well. That is why this office matters beyond El Monte’s own residents: it is the permit and drive-test office for a large commuter population, alongside the teens of Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra, whose cities have no office of their own. The San Gabriel Valley is a commuter valley — Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line runs through it, and Interstate 10, Interstate 605, and State Route 60 all cross it — and a large, spread-out, car-dependent population, much of it commuting west to Los Angeles or east to the Inland Empire, is served by a single eight-service field office.
The El Monte decision the page must answer: El Monte (eight services, no kiosk — fine for tests and counter work, useless for kiosk tasks) vs West Covina / Pasadena / Montebello / Whittier / Bell Gardens / Lincoln Park (full services + kiosk, the real fallbacks) vs the three grocery kiosks (registration and records only, open weekends and late — El Monte and South El Monte to 10:00 PM daily, Temple City’s Ralphs to 1:00 AM daily) vs the in-city partners (Tag That Registration Services LLC on Main Street, registration-type work only, Mon–Fri 10–6:30; Paqueteria El Monte on Valley Boulevard, call first) vs the LA Metro IBC in Covina (not a field office — do not drive there for counter work). Choice by TASK first, never by invented wait-time ranking. Catchment framing only: Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, Alhambra, and South El Monte readers also use this office because their own cities have no field office — framed as “nearby cities whose residents use this office” on geographic adjacency, never as measured catchment data. Do not claim El Monte is the “official” office for Rosemead or Temple City — dmv.ca.gov does not assign catchment areas.
11Before you leave home — the El Monte checklist
- Confirm the day: Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM, not 8:00 AM — and not Tuesday, despite what some directories imply for other offices; Saturday and Sunday the office is closed, full stop. Wednesday, November 11 is closed (Veterans Day). Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 are closed (Thanksgiving and the day after). Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1, 2027) are closed; Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are normal-hours days. State holidays change hours — check the official office page the day before you go (see our California DMV holidays guide).
- Confirm the door: field office (4000 Arden Drive) vs LA Metro IBC in Covina (not a field office) vs kiosk vs partner. A kiosk cannot do your REAL ID; a partner cannot do your licence; the IBC cannot do anything for a general visitor; South El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra have no field office at all.
- Confirm the address: 4000 Arden Drive, El Monte, CA 91731. Not a Superior Grocers store (the office is a standalone building, not inside a grocery store), not a grocery-kiosk address on Valley Boulevard or Durfee Avenue, not 10818 Main Street (the Tag That partner), and not any Grand Avenue address in Covina (the LA Metro IBC).
- Confirm the task: if it is a registration renewal or a record copy, do NOT drive to Arden Drive — the office has no kiosk. Use the Superior Grocers kiosk at 10683 Valley Boulevard (7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily) instead, 0.8 miles away.
- Bring the documents checklist for your task (identity, residency, Social Security number where required, vehicle registration and insurance for a drive test, title and smog certification where required for a transfer). A missing document is the most common reason for a second trip, and no appointment type fixes it. See our documents checklist.
- Bring payment that the door accepts: the field office takes cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order; kiosks take cash, credit, and debit cards, with a 1.95% service fee on card transactions; partners may add their own fee on top of the DMV fee.
- If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, skip the office entirely and use the Superior Grocers kiosk in El Monte (10683 Valley Blvd, 7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily) or South El Monte (1858 N Durfee Ave, 7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily), or the Ralphs kiosk in Temple City (9470 Las Tunas Dr, 6:00 AM–1:00 AM daily) — all are open when the field office is closed, including weekends. Bring the renewal notice with its Renewal Identification Number, or the current registration card.
- Do not book the last slot of the day for a knowledge test — tests are generally not given after 4:30 PM. And do not book an appointment at all for a renewal, a record copy, or a replacement licence — those go online, to a kiosk, or by mail.
- If El Monte shows nothing, widen by task, not by distance: West Covina first for full services with a kiosk (7.4 miles), then Pasadena (7.5 miles) or Montebello (8.3 miles) — all full-service with kiosks on site. El Monte is a real alternative for a licence, a test, or a REAL ID; do not rule it out for counter work on kiosk grounds.
Before you leave, run the three checks from this page: the right day (Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM; weekends closed; November 11, 26, and 27 closed), the right door (field office vs IBC vs kiosk vs partner — a kiosk cannot do your REAL ID, a partner cannot do your licence, the IBC cannot do anything for a general visitor, and this office itself has no kiosk), and the right address (4000 Arden Drive — not a grocery store, not the two kiosk addresses, not the partner address, not Grand Avenue in Covina). Those three checks prevent more wasted San Gabriel Valley trips than any other advice on this page.
12Which door does your task use?
This table is the page’s practical payoff: most wasted San Gabriel Valley trips are not about the address, they are about the wrong door. Read the row for your task before you book anything.
| Your task | Where it goes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First driver’s licence, REAL ID first application, licence renewal that requires an office visit | El Monte field office, “office visit” appointment type | Only a full-service field office issues licences and REAL IDs. Kiosks, partners, and the IBC cannot do them; South El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, and Alhambra have no office of their own. |
| Behind-the-wheel drive test | El Monte field office, “drive test” appointment type (separate from office visit) | El Monte lists Testing. Booking a general office visit for a road test means rebooking. Bring a qualifying vehicle and a licensed driver; the LA Metro IBC in Covina is an industry facility, not a drive-test site for an El Monte reader. The missing kiosk is irrelevant to a drive test. |
| Knowledge (written) test — first time | El Monte field office, office-visit/test appointment | First-time knowledge tests are an office task. Do not book the last slot — tests are generally not given after 4:30 PM. |
| Knowledge (written) test — retest | El Monte field office (or West Covina / Pasadena / Montebello) | No limited-service shortcut exists in this cluster, so a retest is an El Monte, West Covina, Pasadena, or Montebello office task. |
| ID card — original or replacement | El Monte field office (or West Covina / Pasadena / Montebello) | Original ID cards are an office task; eligible renewals can also go through a kiosk. |
| Driver’s licence renewal (eligible, under 70, no REAL ID upgrade, no holds) | Grocery kiosk (Superior Grocers El Monte to 10:00 PM, Superior Grocers South El Monte to 10:00 PM, Ralphs Temple City to 1:00 AM) or online | No office visit needed, and kiosks run weekends and late. If the renewal needs a photo, vision test, or re-examination, it becomes an office task. |
| Registration renewal, planned non-operation, driver/vehicle record copy | Grocery kiosk (El Monte / South El Monte / Temple City), the on-site West Covina kiosk, or online | No office visit needed — and at El Monte there is no on-site kiosk at all, so the grocery kiosk IS the kiosk plan. If the renewal needs a smog check or has a hold, the kiosk will not clear it — then it becomes an El Monte office task. |
| Title transfer, new registration, plates, placards, replacement registration card (complex cases) | El Monte field office only (in this cluster) | Kiosks cannot do title transfers; partners handle registration-type work only. West Covina is the full-service fallback if El Monte shows nothing — and it has a kiosk on site. |
| Registration help with a person at a counter (renewal, plates, sticker, transfer paperwork) | DMV partner — Tag That Registration Services LLC (10818 Main St, El Monte, Mon–Fri 10–6:30) or American Power Enterprises LLC (324 N Azusa Ave, West Covina, Mon–Fri 9–6, Sat 10–4) or LA Auto Registration Services (17227 E Valley Blvd, La Puente, Mon–Fri 10–7:30, Sat 10–6:30) | Partners charge their own additional fee — ask the price first. Partners cannot do licences, tests, or REAL ID. |
| No appointment available at El Monte | West Covina field office (full services + kiosk) first; Pasadena / Montebello as fallbacks (all full-service with kiosks); Lincoln Park / Whittier / Bell Gardens / Los Angeles (Hope Street) / Pomona / Glendale / Rancho Cucamonga as farther fallbacks | West Covina is the only like-for-like substitute closest in the cluster for counter work — with a kiosk on site, which El Monte lacks. Do not drive to South El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, Alhambra, Covina, Baldwin Park, Azusa, Duarte, Irwindale, Arcadia, Monrovia, or La Puente expecting a field office — none exists. Do not drive to the LA Metro IBC in Covina expecting a counter. |

Ready to book?
Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the Arden Drive office for El Monte, Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, Alhambra, and South El Monte visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test, to use the Superior Grocers kiosk on Valley Boulevard for renewals and records instead of an office visit (this office has no kiosk of its own), and to check the West Covina fallback for full services with a kiosk. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go — the office is closed November 11, 26, and 27.
