Pomona DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The full-service DMV field office for the whole Pomona Valley — nine counter services, an on-site self-service kiosk, and behind-the-wheel drive tests at 1600 S Garey Avenue. And the warning that matters most in this valley: twelve nearby cities have NO field office of their own, yet directories keep sending readers to addresses that do not exist — including one AI-written guide that prints a flatly wrong Pomona address. This page separates the real office from the phantom ones first, before anything else, because every wasted trip in the Pomona Valley starts with the wrong address. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

1600 S Garey Avenue, Pomona, CA 91766
Los Angeles County — Pomona Valley anchor office with an on-site kiosk · the office for Pomona, Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Chino, Diamond Bar and the whole valley

1The Pomona Valley anchor — and the wrong addresses that waste trips

Pomona is the full-service anchor of the Pomona Valley, and that single fact is the whole point of this page. The Pomona field office is at 1600 S Garey Avenue, Pomona, CA 91766: a full-service office with nine services, an on-site self-service kiosk, and standard field-office hours (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday and Sunday closed). It is the office for Pomona itself and — because the valley around it has so few offices — the de facto office for Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Chino, Diamond Bar, Montclair, and Upland, none of which has a field office of its own. That is a large, car-dependent population served by one full-service office, and the comparison in section 4 is the release valve for the days this office shows nothing.

The first correction on this page is the address itself, because one ranking guide gets it flatly wrong. An AI-written guide titled “Navigating Your Pomona DMV Appointment” prints the office at “2130 N Garey Ave” — there is no DMV office at that address, and the guide pairs the wrong address with stale COVID-era protocol advice. The real office is at 1600 S Garey Avenue, on the south end of Garey Avenue. Two more Garey Avenue addresses on this page are also easy to confuse with the office, and the confusion is the reader’s, not the guide’s: the Food 4 Less kiosk is at 2090 S Garey Avenue, and the Superior Grocers kiosk is at 3180 N Garey Avenue. Same street, three different buildings — the office, a supermarket kiosk, and another supermarket kiosk. If the address you are navigating to says 2090 S Garey or 3180 N Garey, you are heading to a kiosk, not the office; if it says 2130 N Garey, you are heading to an address that does not exist as a DMV facility at all. The correct address is 1600 S Garey Avenue, and the correct hours are in section 2.

The second correction is bigger than one address: twelve nearby cities have no DMV field office at all. Ontario, Claremont, Chino, Upland, Montclair, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, San Dimas, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, and Walnut all return “Page not found” on dmv.ca.gov’s own field-office directory — verified on build day, November 2, 2026, by a direct sweep of every one of those slugs, and re-confirmed for Ontario, Claremont, Chino, Upland, Montclair, Chino Hills, and Diamond Bar, which were already 404 on October 26. Ontario is the most useful correction of the twelve: it is a large city, and readers routinely search “Ontario DMV” expecting an office that does not exist. Ontario’s DMV presence is grocery kiosks (Superior Grocers, 815 W Holt Boulevard) plus partners — Ontario readers use Pomona or Rancho Cucamonga for office business. Claremont readers use Pomona. Chino readers use Pomona plus the Superior Grocers kiosk on Central Avenue. If a directory sends you to a “DMV office” in any of these twelve cities, it has sent you somewhere that does not exist. The full list, with what each city actually has instead, is in section 4.

The third correction is the one that makes this page different from every sibling office page in this series: Norco HAS a field office. The Rancho Cucamonga brief of October 26 left Norco unverified — “treat as UNVERIFIED until its own dmv.ca.gov page is read” — and today’s own-page read resolves it. Norco is a live field office at 3201 Horseless Carriage Drive, Norco, CA 92860, with the full nine services and an on-site kiosk, on the standard hours pattern. It belongs in the comparison table as a real southeast fallback, and it closes the last open item from the Rancho Cucamonga research. Riverside, found through Norco’s nearby list and verified independently the same day, is likewise a live full-service kiosk office at 6280 Brockton Avenue, Riverside, CA 92506. The cluster around Pomona is richer than prior research knew — six full-service kiosk offices within a reasonable drive, plus two eight-service no-kiosk offices further east, plus a ring of no-office cities whose readers all funnel into Pomona.

Why does one office carry this much demand? Pomona is a city of 151,713 people at the 2020 census — the seventh-largest city in Los Angeles County and the 39th largest in California — incorporated on January 6, 1888, and named for Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruitful abundance. It sits in the Pomona Valley of eastern Los Angeles County, between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley, covering 22.964 square miles. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona — Cal Poly Pomona — lies partially within the city limits, which makes this office the permit and drive-test office for a large student population, alongside the Claremont Colleges a few miles north, whose students also use Pomona because Claremont has no office of its own. That is a large, spread-out, car-dependent population — a university city, a commuter valley, and a dozen no-office cities — served by a single full-service field office at 1600 S Garey Avenue. The rest of this page is the map for using it well and for knowing where to go when it shows nothing.

2Hours, services & the dates to avoid

The weekly pattern is the standard California field-office pattern, confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page (which prints a two-week calendar, November 1–14, 2026, showing the same pattern):

DayHours
Monday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Tuesday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Wednesday9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late)
Thursday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Friday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Saturday – SundayClosed

The Wednesday quirk is the detail that catches the most people: every other weekday opens at 8:00 AM, but Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM. Do not show up at 8:00 on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage — you will wait outside for an hour. Weekends are closed, full stop. No California DMV field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Pomona — including any page that prints kiosk hours as office hours. The Food 4 Less kiosk on S Garey Avenue runs 6:00 AM to midnight daily, and the Superior Grocers kiosk on N Garey Avenue runs 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily; those are the kiosks’ hours, not the office’s, and the office is closed every weekend. There are three date-specific exceptions in the near term, and they are the date warnings on this page: Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is CLOSED — Veterans Day, a state holiday, printed as “closed” on the office’s own November 1–14 calendar and on the DMV’s official holidays list. Do not plan a Wednesday-November-11 visit; Thursday November 12 reopens at 8:00 AM. Thursday, November 26, 2026 (Thanksgiving Day) is CLOSED, and Friday, November 27, 2026 (the day after Thanksgiving) is CLOSED as well, per the same official holidays list. Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24) and New Year’s Eve (Thursday, December 31) are NOT closure days — normal hours apply. Do not copy the federal holiday calendar onto the DMV: Juneteenth and Columbus Day 2026 were both open days. State holidays can change hours at other times of year too, so confirm on the official office page the day before you go — see our California DMV holidays guide. And one timing rule that applies statewide: knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered after 4:30 PM, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test.

The office provides nine services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov — and the ninth is what sets it apart from several offices further east in this cluster. Unlike Redlands and Victorville (eight services, no kiosk), the Pomona field office’s own page carries the headline “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line,” and its services list includes Self Service Terminals as the ninth item.

Service (official list)What it means for your visit
Licensing ServicesDriver licenses (new, renewal, replacement), ID cards, and REAL ID applications. REAL ID first applications require an in-person office visit with original documents — this is the single biggest reason people still visit in person. Start the application online first for a confirmation code; it shortens counter time. California also issues driver licenses regardless of immigration status (AB 60), accepting a foreign passport or matrícula consular as identity, with those cards marked “Federal Limits Apply.”
TestingKnowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests, booked as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official page — check the scheduler rather than assuming it. “Testing” is listed generically, with no breakout.
Title TransfersPrivate-party sales, family transfers, and out-of-state titles. Bring the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office.
RegistrationNew vehicle registrations, renewals that cannot be completed online, and planned non-operation (PNO) filings for vehicles going into storage. Simple registration renewals are often kiosk or online tasks instead — check the kiosk section before booking.
Plates, Permits, & PlacardsReplacement license plates, temporary operating permits, and disabled person placards. Disabled placard applications are one of the few counter services with no online substitute — bring the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional.
Replace Lost/Stolen/DamagedDuplicate driver licenses, registration cards, and vehicle titles when the original is lost, stolen, or damaged.
RecordsDriver and vehicle record requests. Note that simple record-copy requests are handled through out-of-office options in many cases — check eligibility before visiting.
Request miscellaneous original documentsLess common document requests handled at the counter for paperwork outside the standard categories.
Self Service TerminalsThe on-site self-service kiosk — registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records without a counter visit, during office hours. This is what makes Pomona different from Redlands and Victorville (no on-site kiosk). Note the office-page kiosk line “open daily” describes grocery kiosks; the on-site field-office kiosk follows office hours — weekdays only, closed weekends and November 11.

Payment is the same statewide line printed on the office page: the DMV accepts cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order at field offices. The statewide phone line for everything is 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; TTY 1-800-368-4327). No office-specific phone number is published for Pomona — any “direct Pomona DMV number” from a directory is unverified, so use the statewide line. This page deliberately prints no fee dollar amounts: fee line items change and are gated until re-verified on dmv.ca.gov at build time, and the one figure that is safe to state is that booking itself is free.

One more scope rule before you book, because it saves more trips than any other paragraph on this page: routine services get no counter service at all. Simple registration renewals, eligible license and ID renewals, record copies, and replacement licenses are routed by the DMV to online, kiosk, mail, or phone options — the counter will not do them. Before driving to Garey Avenue, check whether your task is actually an office task. The Pomona office page itself lists the tasks completable online with the DMV or a DMV-authorized partner: renew your vehicle registration; renew your driver’s license or ID card; driver’s license or ID card application (start online for a confirmation code — REAL ID first applications still need the in-person visit with originals); change your address; Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability; request a replacement driver’s license; special-interest or personalized plates; and request your driver’s record. If your task is on that list and needs no in-person step, do it online first. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the office.

3Booking an appointment here

Booking happens only on the DMV’s official scheduler, and it is free. Here is the play for a Pomona visit:

  1. Go to the official DMV appointment scheduler (“Schedule an Appointment” on dmv.ca.gov).
  2. Choose your appointment type FIRST. This is the highest-value sentence in this section: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types in the official scheduler, with separate queues. Booking the wrong type means rebooking. Pick “office visit” for licenses, ID, registration, and most counter services; pick “drive test” for the road test. Drive tests are appointment-only — there is no walk-in path for them.
  3. Search by ZIP (91766) or “Pomona” and pick the Garey Avenue office — not a partner address, not a kiosk address, and not the LA Metro IBC in Covina, none of which takes appointments. Watch the address traps, because they are real in this valley: the Food 4 Less kiosk sits at 2090 S Garey Ave, the Superior Grocers kiosk at 3180 N Garey Ave, and the Alicia Lomelin partner at 1285 S Garey Ave. The field office is at 1600 S Garey Avenue. If the address you are navigating to says 2090 or 3180 S or N Garey, you are heading to a kiosk; if it says 1285 S Garey, you are heading to a partner; if it says 2130 N Garey, you are heading to an address that does not exist as a DMV facility; and if it says Grand Avenue in Covina, you are heading to the LA Metro IBC, which is not a field office.
  4. Pick a date and time. Morning slots move fastest. If Pomona shows nothing on your date, widen the same search BY TASK (section 4): Rancho Cucamonga or West Covina first — the two closest full-service offices — then Fontana, Norco, San Bernardino, or Riverside. Remember that Redlands and Victorville have no on-site kiosk, so kiosk tasks need a separate plan. Offices serve all California residents regardless of home address, and cancellations open slots when you check back.
  5. Enter your contact details and confirm. Save the confirmation — you will need it if anything changes.
  6. To change an appointment, cancel it in the scheduler and book a new one. That is the two-step path the scheduler offers: cancel the existing appointment, then book the replacement. There is no penalty figure attached to a missed appointment on this page, because no official source states one — just rebook through the scheduler.
  7. Start the application online first where the scheduler offers it. A REAL ID or licence application started online gives you a confirmation code that shortens counter time. Bring the documents checklist for your task — identity, residency, Social Security number where required — because a missing document is the most common reason for a second trip, and no appointment type fixes it. See our documents checklist. For a REAL ID first application, bring one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two different documents proving California residency, all originals or certified copies — never photocopies. If your legal name has changed, bring name-change documentation too. A non-REAL ID card reads “Federal Limits Apply” and cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025.
  8. Do not book an appointment for the tasks the DMV routes elsewhere. Appointments should not be made for registration renewal, licence or ID renewal, record requests, or a replacement licence — there is no counter service for those. Do them online, at a DMV Now kiosk, or by mail instead. Booking one anyway wastes your slot and the office’s time.

Prefer the phone? Call 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). If you are heading to the office without an appointment, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option — walk-ins use the DMV’s QR check-in at the office (the old Get in Line system was discontinued in March 2026) — and bring everything on our documents checklist so you do not burn a second trip. Walk-ins are accepted subject to capacity, but an appointment beats a walk-in at any hour. More on the whole booking process in our California DMV appointment guide. This page prints no wait-time minutes: the live wait display on dmv.ca.gov changes hourly, and any snapshot quoted here would go stale within the hour — check the live display on the morning of your visit instead. A stale cached search snippet for this office showed “appointment 27 minutes / no appointment 78 minutes” — that is a dead snapshot from an old crawl, not a fact, and it must never be treated as one. One competitor’s “~10 minutes with an appointment / ~33 minutes without” is a statewide average from a single guide, not a Pomona number. The DMV publishes only live, per-moment waits, never an average.

4Nearby DMV offices compared: six full-service fallbacks, two no-kiosk offices, and a ring of no-office cities

Every real office in this cluster runs the same weekly pattern (Monday–Tuesday 8–5, Wednesday 9–5, Thursday–Friday 8–5, Saturday–Sunday closed) and the same six payment methods, and every office below was checked on its OWN dmv.ca.gov page — no service or kiosk claim is copied from another office’s nearby list. The differences are in DISTANCE and in KIOSK status — and that is the whole point of this section. Drive distances and times are driving routes computed with the OSRM routing engine on November 2, 2026, from one stated origin — Pomona City Hall, 505 S Garey Avenue, Pomona, CA 91766 — free-flow (no traffic), for a typical drive. Readers starting elsewhere in Pomona should adjust: the city’s north side is closer to West Covina and Claremont, the east side closer to Rancho Cucamonga. Traffic on the I-10/SR-57/SR-60 corridor changes these times sharply at rush hour — never treat a drive time as a promise.

Do NOT confuse it with the San Bernardino IBC (473 East Carnegie Dr) — a different listing, not a public counter (trap note below).
Redlands (far east — NO kiosk)1659 W Lugonia Avenue, Redlands, CA 9237433.7 mi / ~41 minNO — its own dmv.ca.gov page carries no kiosk banner and its services list has no “Self Service Terminals” entry (own page fetched 2026-11-02)8 services: Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates/Permits/Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, misc docs. Payments: the six-method statewide line. Full-service counter work WITHOUT a kiosk — the Redlands difference. Use a grocery kiosk for renewals instead (Ralphs Riverside, Superior Grocers Corona — section 6).
Victorville (far north — NO kiosk)14855 Corta Drive, Victorville, CA 9239554.1 mi / ~64 minNO — its own dmv.ca.gov page carries no kiosk banner and its services list has no “Self Service Terminals” entry (own page fetched 2026-11-02)8 services, same 8 as Redlands. Payments: the six-method statewide line. The High Desert fallback, not a kiosk office — over an hour away, only worth it when every nearer office shows nothing. See our Victorville DMV guide.
Los Angeles Metro IBC, Covina (NOT an alternative)1365 N Grand Avenue, Suite 100, Covina, CA 917249.6 mi / ~15 minNONOT a field office — an Industry Business Center. Hours Mon–Tue 7:00 AM–4:00 PM, Wed 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, Thu–Fri 7:00 AM–4:00 PM, Sat–Sun closed; its own page carries NO “Services Provided” list and NO kiosk headline. Do NOT drive to Covina expecting a counter for licences, REAL ID, registration, or title work (section 1, warning box below).

Two listings that look like public offices and are NOT. First, the Los Angeles Metro IBC — 1365 North Grand Avenue, Suite 100, Covina, CA 91724 — Mon–Tue 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Wed 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Thu–Fri 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Sat–Sun closed. “IBC” is the Industry Business Center listing; dmv.ca.gov describes its Service Centers as providing “business services to vehicle industry customers.” It appears on the Pomona office page’s nearby list, always labelled plain “DMV Field Office” with no kiosk badge. General-public readers must use the Pomona field-office entry (1600 S Garey Avenue, 91766), not the IBC entry. Note the hours difference too: the IBC opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 4:00 PM, an hour earlier on both ends than the field office — another signal it is a different kind of door. It is also the closest listing to Pomona on the map (9.6 miles, about 15 minutes), which makes it the most dangerous trap in this cluster: the nearest “DMV” on a map search is not a DMV office at all. Second, the San Bernardino IBC — 473 East Carnegie Drive, Suite 125, San Bernardino, CA 92408 — Mon–Tue 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Wed 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Thu–Fri 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Sat–Sun closed. The same pattern: an Industry Business Center for vehicle-industry customers, not a public counter. General-public readers must use the San Bernardino field-office entry (1310 N Waterman Avenue, 92404), not the IBC entry. Do not present either IBC as a Pomona Valley DMV office, and do not drive to Grand Avenue in Covina expecting a counter.

Cities with no field office — do not print a field office for any of these. Ontario has no dmv.ca.gov field-office page: its DMV presence is grocery kiosks (Superior Grocers, 815 W Holt Boulevard) plus business partners — Ontario readers use Pomona or Rancho Cucamonga. Claremont has no field-office page either: Claremont readers use Pomona, and the Claremont Colleges’ students use Pomona for permits and drive tests. Chino has no field office: its DMV presence is a grocery kiosk (Superior Grocers, 12375 Central Avenue) — Chino readers use Pomona. Upland, Montclair, Chino Hills, and Diamond Bar have no field-office page on dmv.ca.gov either — all four slugs return “Page not found,” verified on build day and already 404 on October 26. San Dimas, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, and Walnut have no field-office page either — all five slugs return “Page not found,” verified on build day for the first time. San Dimas and Covina DO have grocery kiosks (Albertsons San Dimas, Superior Grocers Covina — section 6); Covina also hosts the LA Metro IBC, which is NOT a field office. If a directory sends you to a “DMV office” in any of these twelve cities, it has sent you somewhere that does not exist.

Two corrections worth naming, because directories get them wrong. First, Rancho Cucamonga is the nearest office, not West Covina — 10.8 miles versus 12.9 from Pomona City Hall — and both are closer than most Pomona guides’ first suggestion, which is usually San Bernardino, 33.6 miles away. A guide that starts its list at San Bernardino without naming Rancho Cucamonga or West Covina sends you to a door three times farther away. Second, Redlands and Victorville are full-service offices despite having no kiosk — the missing kiosk matters exactly once, when your task is a renewal or a record copy and you were hoping to use the office machine. For licences, tests, REAL ID, and title transfers, Redlands and Victorville do the same work as the other six. Do not rule them out on kiosk grounds — but do not drive 54 miles to Victorville for a renewal, either, when a grocery kiosk on Garey Avenue does it at midnight.

5Frequently asked questions

Pomona: the straight answers to the questions Pomona Valley residents actually ask — answered from official sources, verified November 2, 2026.

What are the hours of the Pomona DMV?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. The date-specific exceptions: Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed (Veterans Day, a state holiday), and Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2026 are closed (Thanksgiving Day and the day after). Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve 2026 are normal-hours days. State holidays can change hours — confirm on the official office page before you go. No field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Pomona.

Is the Pomona DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?

No — the Pomona field office is closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, on the official dmv.ca.gov calendar. Ignore any page that claims the DMV is open on weekends — those are the grocery kiosks’ hours, not the office’s. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, the two in-city grocery kiosks cover weekends: Food 4 Less at 2090 S Garey Ave (6:00 AM–midnight daily) and Superior Grocers at 3180 N Garey Ave (7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily).

What is the address of the Pomona DMV?

1600 S Garey Avenue, Pomona, CA 91766. Beware pages listing ‘2130 N Garey Ave’ — that address appears in one AI-written guide and is NOT the DMV office. Also do not confuse the office with the two Garey Avenue kiosks: Food 4 Less at 2090 S Garey Ave and Superior Grocers at 3180 N Garey Ave are supermarkets with kiosks inside, not the office. The official office page is dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/pomona/.

What is the phone number for the Pomona DMV?

1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV line (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; TTY 1-800-368-4327). There is no published direct number for the Pomona office — any ‘direct Pomona DMV number’ from a directory is unverified. Use the statewide line.

Do I need an appointment to visit the Pomona DMV?

Appointments are recommended but most services accept walk-ins — and an appointment beats a walk-in at any hour. If you go without one, the DMV’s same-day check-in is now QR check-in at the office (the old Get in Line system was discontinued in March 2026), and you should expect to wait. The firm exception is the behind-the-wheel drive test, which is appointment-only with no walk-in path. Booking is free on the official DMV scheduler. Do not book at all for a registration renewal, licence or ID renewal, record request, or replacement licence — there is no counter service for those; use online, a kiosk, or mail.

What services does the Pomona DMV offer — does it do driving tests?

Nine services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov: Licensing Services; Testing; Title Transfers; Registration; Plates, Permits, & Placards; Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged; Records; Request miscellaneous original documents; and Self Service Terminals (the on-site kiosk). Yes — behind-the-wheel drive tests are bookable here, as a separate appointment type from a general office visit. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official page, so check the scheduler rather than assuming it. Payments accepted: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order.

Does the Pomona DMV have a self-service kiosk, and what can I do at the kiosk?

Yes — inside the field office, open during office hours (Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed). Pomona also has two grocery-store kiosks that run on store hours, including weekends when the office is closed: Food 4 Less at 2090 S Garey Ave (6:00 AM–midnight daily) and Superior Grocers at 3180 N Garey Ave (7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily). Kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records only — they do NOT issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses. More in the kiosk section below and our DMV kiosk guide.

What should I bring for a REAL ID, licence, or registration visit?

For a REAL ID first application: one proof of identity (valid US passport or passport card, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or similar), your Social Security number, and two different documents proving California residency showing your first and last name and the mailing address that will appear on the card (mortgage bill, home utility or cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, bank statement, or similar) — originals or certified copies, never photocopies. If your legal name has changed, bring name-change documentation too. For a licence or registration visit, bring the documents on our documents checklist for your task. A missing document is the most common reason for a second trip, and no appointment type fixes it.

Is there a DMV field office in Ontario? In Claremont? In Chino?

No to all three. Ontario, Claremont, and Chino have NO field office — their dmv.ca.gov field-office pages all return ‘Page not found,’ verified on build day. Ontario readers use Pomona or Rancho Cucamonga for office business, plus the Superior Grocers kiosk on Holt Boulevard for renewals. Claremont readers use Pomona. Chino readers use Pomona plus the Superior Grocers kiosk on Central Avenue. The same is true of Upland, Montclair, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, San Dimas, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, and Walnut — twelve nearby cities with no field office at all. Covina hosts the LA Metro IBC, but that is an industry business center, not a field office.

If the Pomona DMV is fully booked, which nearby office should I try instead?

It depends on your TASK — and this is the most important answer on the page. For full services (anything, including REAL ID and drive tests) plus a kiosk: Rancho Cucamonga (8629 Hellman Ave, 10.8 mi / ~16 min), West Covina (800 So Glendora Ave, 12.9 mi / ~18 min), Norco (3201 Horseless Carriage Dr, 20.1 mi / ~30 min), Fontana (8026 Hemlock Ave, 20.7 mi / ~27 min), Riverside (6280 Brockton Ave, 25.0 mi / ~35 min), or San Bernardino (1310 N Waterman Ave, 33.6 mi / ~42 min). For counter work and tests but NOT kiosk tasks: Redlands (1659 W Lugonia Ave, 33.7 mi / ~41 min) or Victorville (14855 Corta Dr, 54.1 mi / ~64 min). Never the LA Metro IBC in Covina for counter work — it is an industry business center, not a public office. Pick by task first, then by drive time — never by an invented wait-time ranking.

Can I renew my vehicle registration at a kiosk or a DMV business partner instead of going to the Pomona office?

Yes for renewals and records — no for REAL ID, tests, or first licences. The two in-city grocery kiosks (Food 4 Less, 2090 S Garey Ave, 6:00 AM–midnight daily; Superior Grocers, 3180 N Garey Ave, 7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily) handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records, including weekends when the office is closed. The DMV business partner in Pomona is Alicia Lomelin Escalante Ins at 1285 S Garey Ave Ste G (1-909-629-3111) — call before visiting, as its published hours show a data anomaly; partners charge their own additional fee, so ask the price first. Partners handle registration-type work only — they cannot issue licences, run tests, or process REAL ID.

How do I get to the Pomona DMV by bus or train, and is there parking information available?

By rail, Pomona has TWO stations, and they are different stations miles apart — do not go to the wrong one. Pomona–North station (205 Santa Fe Street) serves Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line and the Metro A Line, with Foothill Transit connections at the station. Pomona–Downtown station serves Metrolink’s Riverside Line and Amtrak’s Sunset Limited / Texas Eagle. Check which line your trip uses before you travel. By bus, Foothill Transit lines 291 and 195 serve the area around Garey Avenue — use the Foothill Transit / Metrolink trip planner and check the stop for 1600 S Garey Avenue before you travel; this page prints no stop-to-office walk claim, timetable, or frequency, because schedules change and a stale timetable is worse than no timetable. On parking: no official or credible source describes the Garey Avenue office’s lot, capacity, street parking, or accessibility spaces, so this page asserts nothing about parking — arrive early and allow time to park, because the office does not publish parking details.

6Kiosks: the on-site machine plus the Pomona Valley grocery cluster

Pomona is well covered for kiosk tasks — better than most offices in this series, because it has both kinds of kiosk and because its cluster stretches across three counties. The field office itself has a self-service terminal on site (open during office hours: Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 8–5, Wednesday 9–5, weekends closed, November 11 closed), and the grocery kiosks below run on store hours, including weekends and late nights when the office is closed. Kiosk hours follow the host store’s hours, so confirm on dmv.ca.gov before a late-night trip. And remember the scope rule: kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records only. They do not issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses — and neither do the partners in the next section.

The count, stated carefully so it cannot be misread: one kiosk at the office itself, two grocery kiosks in Pomona proper, and four more grocery kiosks on the Pomona office page’s nearby list (Chino, Ontario, Covina, San Dimas) — six grocery kiosks in the Pomona-page cluster, seven kiosk locations counting the on-site machine. The wider cluster, from the Norco page’s nearby list, adds five more grocery kiosks (Eastvale, Corona twice, Riverside twice) — eleven grocery kiosks plus one on-site machine, twelve kiosk locations in the full Pomona Valley / western Riverside cluster. Never “twelve kiosks in Pomona.” For a Claremont or La Verne reader, that distinction is the whole story: the kiosk is why a Claremont resident can renew a registration without ever leaving the valley, and also why a Claremont resident still has to drive to Pomona for a REAL ID or a drive test. Payment at kiosks: cash, credit card, and debit card accepted; one payment method per transaction; a 1.95% service fee applies to credit and debit card transactions (DMV kiosk FAQ). Bring the renewal notice (with its Renewal Identification Number) or the current registration card; for a replacement card or sticker bring the plate number and the last five digits of the VIN; for records bring the licence or ID card. More on kiosk-eligible tasks in our DMV kiosk guide.

The kiosk-versus-office decision is the page’s practical payoff, so here it is plainly. If the task is a registration renewal, a PNO filing, or a record copy, a Pomona grocery kiosk (open to 10:00 PM, midnight, or later daily, including weekends when every field office is closed) beats any office visit — the Food 4 Less kiosk on S Garey Avenue runs 6:00 AM to midnight every day. If the task is a REAL ID, a first licence, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the Garey Avenue office. If the renewal needs a smog check or has a hold, the kiosk will not clear it — then it becomes an office task. And if the task is a duplicate title, an ID card, or a knowledge retest, there is no limited-service shortcut in this cluster — those are Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, or West Covina office tasks.

7DMV partners near Pomona: registration help for an extra fee

Partner caution, in the DMV’s own wording: “Businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, often with much shorter wait times (if any!). Additional fees may be applied by this partner.” Partners handle registration-type work only; they do not issue licences, run tests, or process REAL ID. Ask the price before handing over paperwork. The partner list below is the official dmv.ca.gov listing for this cluster, re-verified November 2, 2026 — commercial “DMV registration” sites and directory listings are not DMV partners and are not presented as such.

PartnerAddress & phoneHours (dmv.ca.gov)Notes
Alicia Lomelin Escalante Ins (in Pomona — the only in-city partner verified on its own dmv.ca.gov page)1285 S Garey Ave Ste G, Pomona, CA 91766 — 1-909-629-3111Call before visiting — no hours printed hereThe in-city partner sits on the same street as the office — 1285 S Garey Ave is a different building from the 1600 S Garey Ave office. Its own dmv.ca.gov page shows a “closed” calendar every day, November 1–14 — a data anomaly, NOT hours, so no hours are printed here. Call before visiting.
A L E Registrations LLC (Pomona)1285 S Garey Ave Ste G, Pomona, CA 91766 — 1-909-629-3111Call before visiting — no hours printed hereA second dmv.ca.gov-listed partner at the same Garey Avenue address and phone. Do NOT assume it is the same business as Alicia Lomelin Escalante Ins — the shared address and phone are suggestive, but the pages are separate listings. Named only, with a call-first caution; no hours or services invented.
Corona Test Only (wider cluster)2189 Sampson Ave Ste B110, Corona, CA 92879 — 1-951-284-1700Mon–Fri 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Sat 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Sun closedThe one partner in this cluster whose hours ARE printed on dmv.ca.gov, so they are printed here. A partner in the wider cluster for Corona-side readers.

Two warnings before you use this table. First, the Garey Avenue trap: the Alicia Lomelin partner sits at 1285 S Garey Ave — and so do the Food 4 Less kiosk (2090 S Garey) and the Superior Grocers kiosk (3180 N Garey). None of the three is the field office, and none takes appointments. The field office is at 1600 S Garey Avenue. Second, the partner-hours anomaly: several partner listings on dmv.ca.gov show “Mon–Sun Closed” — that is a data anomaly, not hours, and this page never prints “Mon–Sun Closed” as a partner’s hours. For any partner showing that pattern, the page prints name, address, and phone only, with a call-first caution. And the non-partner warning: several Pomona Valley registration businesses appear in search place listings, but none of them has a dmv.ca.gov business-partner page verified in this check, so none of them is presented here as a DMV partner. A search listing is not a DMV partner page. If a business calls itself a “DMV” service without appearing on dmv.ca.gov’s partner list, treat it as a private business, not as the DMV — and never hand it a task it cannot do, because no partner can issue a licence, run a test, or process a REAL ID.

8Drive tests at Pomona: what to expect

“Testing” is on the Pomona field office’s official services list, so behind-the-wheel drive tests are bookable here — as a separate appointment type in the official scheduler, not as part of a general office visit. That separation is the most common booking mistake in the whole DMV system, and it is worth repeating for a valley where the next office is a freeway drive away: book “drive test,” not “office visit,” for the road test, or you will be rebooking instead of testing. Drive tests are appointment-only — there is no walk-in path for them. The test itself follows the standard California examiner pattern — residential speed control, full stops, mirror and blind-spot discipline, lane discipline, and parking — and the best preparation is the same everywhere: practice on the skills in our driving test appointment guide and driving test tips, not a memorized route. This page deliberately prints no street-by-street examiner route for Pomona: no verified turn-by-turn route text was found for this office, and an invented route would be worse than no route.

The car-qualification checklist is statewide and worth running the night before, because a failed car check costs the appointment: valid registration, current insurance, working brake lights, turn signals, horn, and mirrors — and a licensed driver who brings the test-taker and waits at the office. The examiner’s pre-drive check covers the brakes (foot and parking), horn, turn signals front and back, brake lights, tires, an unobstructed windshield, working doors and windows, a driver-side window that rolls down, seat belts, two mirrors, two plates with current registration, the defroster, hazard lights, headlights, and wipers, and asks the test-taker to locate and demonstrate the controls (window, wipers, signals, brake lights, horn, parking brake, defroster, hazards, headlights) and arm signals. The skills tested are left and right turns, stops at intersections, lane changes, straight-line reversing, curbside parking, traffic checks, and space management, with freeway driving only briefly or rarely. What loses points everywhere in California: missed mirror and blind-spot checks before lane changes, rolling stops, following too closely, speed mismatched to conditions (not just the posted limit), and pedestrian-awareness failures at crosswalks and intersections. Two more scope notes. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for Pomona on its official page, so check the scheduler rather than assuming a motorcycle test is offered here — “Testing” is listed generically, with no breakout. And knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered after 4:30 PM, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test — take a morning slot for any test, drive or written, and treat the Wednesday 9:00 AM opening as a hard constraint on early appointments that day. After a failed test, a waiting period applies before retesting and the number of attempts is limited — the scheduler shows when you can rebook; no specific wait or attempt numbers are printed here without a Handbook citation. Parallel parking (other than pulling alongside a curb) is generally not required in the California test — phrased as “generally” only, never as an official guarantee.

Which office for the test, if Pomona shows no drive-test slot? Rancho Cucamonga (10.8 miles, about 16 minutes) is the same work closest by; West Covina (12.9 miles, about 18 minutes) is the second choice; Norco (20.1 miles, about 30 minutes) is the third; Fontana (20.7 miles, about 27 minutes) is the fourth. Redlands is a full-service alternative for a drive test too — and note that Redlands having no kiosk is irrelevant to a drive test, because a test does not need a kiosk; do not rule Redlands out on kiosk grounds. Riverside and San Bernardino are the farther alternatives. And do NOT book the test at the Los Angeles Metro IBC in Covina (1365 N Grand Avenue) — it is an Industry Business Center for vehicle-industry customers, not a public counter, and it does not take a general drive-test appointment for a Pomona reader. Do not book it at the San Bernardino IBC either (473 East Carnegie Drive) — that is the same kind of industry facility, not a public counter. For Pomona’s student population, one note: Pomona teens take permit and drive tests at this office, and Claremont teens use Pomona too, because Claremont has no office of its own — frame that as geographic adjacency, never as an assigned catchment, because dmv.ca.gov does not assign catchment areas.

9Transit, parking & getting there

By rail, Pomona has TWO stations, and they are different stations miles apart — a reader who goes to the wrong one faces a cross-town trip. Pomona–North station (205 Santa Fe Street) serves Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line (Los Angeles Union Station to San Bernardino–Downtown) AND Los Angeles Metro Rail’s A Line (since September 19, 2025), with Foothill Transit connections at the station (lines 197, 291, 492, and the Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Express). The station sits just west of Garey Avenue and south of Bonita Avenue, in North Pomona. Pomona–Downtown station, in Downtown Pomona, also near Garey Avenue, serves Metrolink’s Riverside Line (Los Angeles Union Station to Riverside–Downtown) AND Amtrak’s Sunset Limited / Texas Eagle (thrice-weekly combined service). Metrolink has served Downtown Pomona since 1993, and the station took its current form on February 5, 2001. Check which line your trip uses before you travel — the San Bernardino Line and the Riverside Line do not stop at the same station, and the A Line serves only Pomona–North. That is the transit version of the Ontario-no-office correction: two names that sound like one place, and the wrong one costs you the trip.

By bus, Foothill Transit is the public transit agency for the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, and lines 291 and 195 serve the area around Garey Avenue, per Moovit’s Pomona DMV transit page. That is the extent of what this page asserts about bus service — and the rest is a check-the-planner instruction, not a route.

No stop-level claim is made here. No source verifies a specific bus stop’s walking distance to 1600 S Garey Avenue, and no route number is asserted here for the office trip itself beyond the two line numbers above. The page’s wording is deliberate: use the Foothill Transit / Metrolink trip planner and check the stop nearest 1600 S Garey Avenue before you travel. Never print a “get off at X, walk Y minutes” instruction, a timetable, or a frequency for any Foothill Transit route — the schedules change, and a stale timetable is worse than no timetable. The same planner-check framing applies to rail: neither Metrolink station is AT the DMV office, so the page makes no station-to-office walk claim at all. Planner-check framing only.

Parking is unsourced. No official or credible source describes the office’s lot, capacity, street parking, or accessibility spaces. This page does not assert “free parking,” “large lot,” or any parking-difficulty claim for the Pomona field office. Third-party review snippets mention a “packed” parking lot, but that is single-source aggregator data, not a verified parking fact, and it is not printed as one. The only tip offered is the honest one: arrive early and allow time to park, because the office does not publish parking details. No street-by-street driving directions appear anywhere on this page, for the same reason — the office address is the fact, plus the labelled OSRM drive times in section 4; the route is the reader’s navigation app. One driving note for Pomona Valley readers: the office sits in a valley that runs hot in summer — but that is a general travel caution, not office guidance.

10Pomona & the catchment: who this office actually serves

Pomona is a city in the Pomona Valley of eastern Los Angeles County, California — between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley, in the Greater Los Angeles area. It sits on the valley floor between the San Gabriel Mountains to the north and the Chino Hills to the south, covering 22.964 square miles. Its population was 151,713 at the 2020 United States census (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, labelled with its year — never an unlabelled estimate), making it the seventh-most-populous city in Los Angeles County and the 39th largest in the state. Los Angeles is the county seat of Los Angeles County — not Pomona. Do not misstate this: the county-seat flagship office is the Los Angeles office, not Pomona.

The city was incorporated on January 6, 1888 (a charter city since 1911), named for Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruitful abundance. It grew from a citrus and ranching town into a regional centre, and today California State Polytechnic University, Pomona — Cal Poly Pomona — lies partially within the city limits, with the rest in the neighbouring unincorporated community of Ramona. That is why this office matters beyond Pomona’s own residents: it is the permit and drive-test office for a large student population, alongside the Claremont Colleges a few miles north, whose students also use Pomona because Claremont has no office of its own. The Pomona Valley is a commuter valley — Metrolink’s San Bernardino and Riverside Lines both stop in Pomona, and Interstate 10, State Route 57, and State Route 60 all cross the city — and a large, spread-out, car-dependent population, much of it commuting east to the Inland Empire or west to Los Angeles, is served by a single full-service field office.

The Pomona decision the page must answer: Pomona (full services + on-site kiosk + appointments, the default) vs Rancho Cucamonga (full services + kiosk, 16 minutes east, the fallback) vs West Covina (full services + kiosk, 18 minutes west) vs Norco / Fontana (full services + kiosk, about half an hour) vs Riverside / San Bernardino (full services + kiosk, the farther fallbacks) vs Redlands / Victorville (full-service counter work, no kiosk) vs the in-city kiosks (registration and records only, open weekends and late — Food 4 Less to midnight daily, Superior Grocers to 10:00 PM daily) vs the in-city partner (Alicia Lomelin Escalante Ins on S Garey Avenue, registration-type work only, call first). Choice by TASK first, never by invented wait-time ranking. Catchment framing only: Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Chino, Diamond Bar, Montclair, and Upland readers also use this office because their own cities have no field office — framed as “nearby cities whose residents use this office” on geographic adjacency, never as measured catchment data. Ontario readers use Pomona or Rancho Cucamonga, because Rancho Cucamonga is the closer full-service office for the east side of Ontario. Do not claim Pomona is the “official” office for Claremont or Ontario — dmv.ca.gov does not assign catchment areas.

11Before you leave home — the Pomona checklist

  • Confirm the day: Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM, not 8:00 AM; Saturday and Sunday the office is closed, full stop. Wednesday, November 11 is closed (Veterans Day). Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 are closed (Thanksgiving and the day after). State holidays change hours — check the official office page the day before you go (see our California DMV holidays guide).
  • Confirm the door: field office (1600 S Garey Ave) vs LA Metro IBC in Covina (not a field office) vs kiosk vs partner. A kiosk cannot do your REAL ID; a partner cannot do your licence; the IBC cannot do anything for a general visitor; Ontario, Claremont, Chino, Upland, Montclair, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, San Dimas, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, and Walnut have no field office at all.
  • Confirm the address: 1600 S Garey Avenue, Pomona, CA 91766. Not 2130 N Garey Ave (no DMV there), not 2090 S Garey Ave (the Food 4 Less kiosk), not 3180 N Garey Ave (the Superior Grocers kiosk), not 1285 S Garey Ave (the Alicia Lomelin partner), and not any Grand Avenue address in Covina (the LA Metro IBC).
  • Bring the documents checklist for your task (identity, residency, Social Security number where required, vehicle registration and insurance for a drive test, title and smog certification where required for a transfer). A missing document is the most common reason for a second trip, and no appointment type fixes it. See our documents checklist.
  • Bring payment that the door accepts: the field office takes cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order; kiosks take cash, credit, and debit cards, with a 1.95% service fee on card transactions; partners may add their own fee on top of the DMV fee.
  • If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, skip the office entirely and use the Food 4 Less kiosk on S Garey Avenue (6:00 AM–midnight daily) or the Superior Grocers kiosk on N Garey Avenue (7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily) — both are open when the field office is closed, including weekends. Bring the renewal notice with its Renewal Identification Number, or the current registration card.
  • Do not book the last slot of the day for a knowledge test — tests are generally not given after 4:30 PM. And do not book an appointment at all for a renewal, a record copy, or a replacement licence — those go online, to a kiosk, or by mail.
  • If Pomona shows nothing, widen by task, not by distance: Rancho Cucamonga first (10.8 miles), then West Covina (12.9 miles), then Norco (20.1 miles) or Fontana (20.7 miles) — all full-service with kiosks on site. Redlands and Victorville are full-service alternatives without a kiosk; do not rule them out for a licence, a test, or a REAL ID.

Before you leave, run the three checks from this page: the right day (Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM; weekends closed; November 11, 26, and 27 closed), the right door (field office vs IBC vs kiosk vs partner — a kiosk cannot do your REAL ID, a partner cannot do your licence, the IBC cannot do anything for a general visitor), and the right address (1600 S Garey Avenue — not 2130 N Garey, not the two kiosk addresses, not the partner address, not Grand Avenue in Covina). Those three checks prevent more wasted Pomona Valley trips than any other advice on this page.

12Which door does your task use?

This table is the page’s practical payoff: most wasted Pomona Valley trips are not about the address, they are about the wrong door. Read the row for your task before you book anything.

Your taskWhere it goesWhy
First driver’s licence, REAL ID first application, licence renewal that requires an office visitPomona field office, “office visit” appointment typeOnly a full-service field office issues licences and REAL IDs. Kiosks, partners, and the IBC cannot do them; Ontario, Claremont, Chino, Upland, Montclair, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, San Dimas, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, and Walnut have no office of their own.
Behind-the-wheel drive testPomona field office, “drive test” appointment type (separate from office visit)Pomona lists Testing. Booking a general office visit for a road test means rebooking. Bring a qualifying vehicle and a licensed driver; the LA Metro IBC in Covina is an industry facility, not a drive-test site for a Pomona reader.
Knowledge (written) test — first timePomona field office, office-visit/test appointmentFirst-time knowledge tests are an office task. Do not book the last slot — tests are generally not given after 4:30 PM.
Knowledge (written) test — retestPomona field office (or Rancho Cucamonga / West Covina)No limited-service shortcut exists in this cluster, so a retest is a Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, or West Covina office task.
ID card — original or replacementPomona field office (or Rancho Cucamonga / West Covina)Original ID cards are an office task; eligible renewals can also go through a kiosk.
Driver’s licence renewal (eligible, under 70, no REAL ID upgrade, no holds)In-city kiosk (Food 4 Less S Garey Ave to midnight, Superior Grocers N Garey Ave to 10:00 PM) or onlineNo office visit needed, and kiosks run weekends and late. If the renewal needs a photo, vision test, or re-examination, it becomes an office task.
Registration renewal, planned non-operation, driver/vehicle record copyIn-city kiosk (Food 4 Less / Superior Grocers Pomona), the on-site Pomona kiosk, or onlineNo office visit needed. If the renewal needs a smog check or has a hold, the kiosk will not clear it — then it becomes a Pomona office task.

Ready to book?

Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the Garey Avenue office for Pomona, Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Chino, and Diamond Bar visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test, to use the Food 4 Less or Superior Grocers kiosk in Pomona for renewals and records instead of an office visit, and to check the Rancho Cucamonga fallback if Pomona shows nothing. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go — the office is closed November 11, 26, and 27.
