Red Bluff DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

Tehama County’s only DMV field office — the county-seat office on Monroe Street, open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only, with behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written tests and REAL ID. On Tuesdays and Thursdays this office is closed and the corridor’s open DMV is Willows instead. But check the rules before you book: simple renewals, records, and replacement licenses get no counter service at all, there is no kiosk in this office or anywhere in the county, and there is no CDL test here. TL;DR

  • Address: 675 Monroe St, Red Bluff, CA 96080 — downtown Red Bluff, the county seat of Tehama County, just off Interstate 5 (Exits 647 and 649). Do not trust the wrong address — one page ranking near the top of Google gives “705 Antelope Boulevard,” which is not the DMV. The office is on Monroe Street.
  • Hours: Monday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, every week. Do not trust the wrong hours either — the DMV’s own place-data listing and several aggregators wrongly show Monday–Friday hours for this office. The office page’s own calendar shows Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133 (statewide DMV number; no office-direct line is published). Automated service is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.
  • Appointments: book free at dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/select-appointment-type or by phone. Behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. Do not book an appointment for a registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record request, or replacement license — those have no counter service and must be done online or by mail.
  • Tests: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle skills, and written knowledge tests on site. No CDL road test — the nearest CDL test site is Redding, about 30 miles north on I-5. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm.
  • REAL ID: offered here. A first-time REAL ID needs an in-person visit with proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency. Enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025.
  • Kiosk: none. There is no self-service DMV Now kiosk at this office, and none anywhere in Tehama County. The nearest verified kiosk is at the Chico DMV field office, about 40 miles south.
  • Closed this week: Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day) — one of the office’s three normal open days. In the week of November 9–13 the office is open only Monday, November 9 and Friday, November 13.
  • Only office in the county: Red Bluff is Tehama County’s only DMV field office. When it is closed, no DMV field office is open anywhere in the county — the nearest open offices are Willows (Tuesdays and Thursdays), Redding, and Chico.

1Tehama County’s only DMV office — and the three-day rule that saves most trips

Red Bluff is the county seat of Tehama County, and its DMV field office is the only one the county has. That is not a figure of speech: Tehama County, population 65,829 at the 2020 census, has exactly one DMV field office, and it sits at 675 Monroe Street in downtown Red Bluff, serving every community in the county — Red Bluff itself, Corning, Los Molinos, Gerber, Rancho Tehama Reserve, Paynes Creek, Manton, Mineral, and the rest. When this office is closed, no DMV field office is open anywhere in Tehama County, and residents must leave the county to reach one.

And the office is closed more often than most readers expect. It runs on the DMV’s rural part-time pattern: three days a week — Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only — with Wednesday opening an hour late at 9:00 am, the same late-Wednesday pattern as full-time offices. A reader who assumes normal Monday–Friday hours will drive to a closed office four days out of seven. That is the single most important fact on this page, and it belongs in the first screen, not buried in a table below.

The trap is worse here than at most part-time offices, because the DMV’s own place-data feed for Red Bluff lists Monday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm — the hours a full-time office keeps. Google’s place card and several aggregators repeat that listing. The authoritative source is the office page’s own day-by-day calendar, which shows Tuesday and Thursday closed, and the independent guide dmvca.info agrees: Monday and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, nothing else. This page follows the calendar, and it says so plainly wherever the wrong hours could mislead you.

There is a second trap waiting in search results: the address. A page ranking near the top of Google for this office gives the address as “705 Antelope Boulevard.” That is wrong. The DMV is at 675 Monroe Street, verified three ways — the official office page, the DMV’s place data, and dmvca.info all agree. The wrong-address page is machine-written, invents anecdotes about lines wrapping around the building, and advises readers to visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays — the two weekdays the office is closed. If you follow it, you will drive to the wrong street on a day the office is shut. This page exists so you do not have to.

The same pattern applies to Red Bluff’s southern neighbour, Willows (Tuesdays and Thursdays only), and the two schedules interlock: between them, the I-5 corridor from Red Bluff to Willows has a DMV office open every weekday — but never both on the same day. That interlocking schedule is the page’s strongest “which office, which day” hook, and no competitor page explains it. Redding, 30 miles north, is the nearest full-time office for any day neither Red Bluff nor Willows is open, and Chico, 40 miles south, is the nearest full-time office to the south and the nearest kiosk.

2Address — Monroe Street, downtown Red Bluff

The Red Bluff DMV field office is at 675 Monroe Street, Red Bluff, CA 96080, in downtown Red Bluff on the west side of the Sacramento River valley floor, just off Interstate 5. Red Bluff is about 131 miles north of Sacramento on I-5 — about a 2-hour, 7-minute drive — and about 30 miles south of Redding. The office has stood at this address since it opened in 1989.

I-5 access is via the Red Bluff interchanges: Exit 647 (Business Loop I-5, Riverside Avenue) and Exit 649 (State Route 36 / Antelope Boulevard). The business route, South Main Street — historic US 99W — runs 4.20 miles through the city. State Route 36 joins I-5 at Red Bluff and runs east toward Lake Almanor, about 70 miles away. Do not rely on any other exit number for this office — only 647 and 649 were verified.

Two corrections belong in this section because readers meet the wrong information first. First, the address: 675 Monroe Street, not “705 Antelope Boulevard.” Antelope Boulevard is a real street in Red Bluff — it is the State Route 36 frontage at Exit 649 — which is exactly why the wrong address sounds plausible and why it keeps getting repeated. The DMV is on Monroe Street, in the downtown grid. Second, Corning and Orland: drivers-ed template pages claim a “Corning DMV” and an “Orland DMV.” Neither exists. Corning’s only DMV-related business is a registration partner, Pelayo’s Registration Services at 1809 Solano Street (phone 1-530-838-4744), which handles registration work only and cannot issue licenses, take driving tests, or do REAL ID. Orland has no DMV field office at all. Corning residents’ nearest real DMV field office is Red Bluff, about 21 miles north on I-5 — about 20 minutes — and Orland residents’ nearest are Willows (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Red Bluff (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays).

One useful orientation landmark: the office is in the downtown grid, minutes off I-5, and the Tehama County Superior Court’s traffic division is at 1740 Walnut Street, Red Bluff — the same downtown grid, useful for readers dealing with a ticket and a DMV visit on the same trip. Court hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–4:30 pm. No walking distance between the two buildings was verified, so none is stated here.

Parking and public-transit specifics for this office are unverified. The independent guide for this office punts with “check signage on arrival,” and this page will not invent a parking capacity, a lot layout, or a bus route. One item worth checking before your visit: Tehama County’s TRAX (Tehama Rural Area Express) bus service runs in the Red Bluff area — confirm a stop near Monroe Street on the TRAX schedule before planning a bus trip, because no stop was verified for this page.

3Hours — Monday, Wednesday, Friday only, and the two-day week

The hours table is short, and that is the point. Three days a week, one of them opening an hour late, and four days closed. Learn it before you drive.

DayHours
Monday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
TuesdayClosed
Wednesday9:00 am – 5:00 pm (late open)
ThursdayClosed
Friday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
SaturdayClosed
SundayClosed

Two details in that table deserve emphasis. First, Wednesday opens at 9:00 am, not 8:00 am — the same late-Wednesday pattern as full-time offices, and the easiest hour to get wrong if you arrive at opening time on a Wednesday. Second, knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm under the DMV’s statewide rule, so a written-test visit needs to arrive early enough to finish paperwork, the vision exam, and the photo before that cutoff.

The calendar for the two weeks around this page’s publication shows exactly how the pattern plays out, including the holiday that removes a third of one week:

DateDayStatus
Mon, Nov 2, 2026MondayOpen 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tue, Nov 3, 2026TuesdayClosed
Wed, Nov 4, 2026WednesdayOpen 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Thu, Nov 5, 2026ThursdayClosed
Fri, Nov 6, 2026FridayOpen 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sat, Nov 7 – Sun, Nov 8, 2026WeekendClosed
Mon, Nov 9, 2026MondayOpen 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tue, Nov 10, 2026TuesdayClosed
Wed, Nov 11, 2026WednesdayClosed — Veterans Day (state holiday)
Thu, Nov 12, 2026ThursdayClosed
Fri, Nov 13, 2026FridayOpen 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sat, Nov 14 – Sun, Nov 15, 2026WeekendClosed

In the week of November 9–13 the office is therefore open only two days (Monday, November 9 and Friday, November 13), because Veterans Day falls on a Wednesday — one of its three normal open days — and wipes out a full third of that week’s open days. All DMV field offices are closed on state holidays, and Veterans Day is a state holiday. If your errand can wait, the week of November 9 is the worst week of the month to need this office; if it cannot wait, Willows is open Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 12, and Redding and Chico are open all week.

Saturday deserves its own sentence, because readers keep asking. No: the Red Bluff office is closed every Saturday and Sunday, and there is no Saturday DMV option in Tehama County. One unofficial site wrongly claims the Chico office has Saturday hours — the official Chico page says Saturday and Sunday closed. No Saturday hours were verified for Redding or Chico either, so do not drive to either on a Saturday without checking the office page’s calendar first.

A note on the DMV’s own wait-time widget: when this page was verified, it showed no live wait-time figure for Red Bluff — it read “Closed” because the office was closed at the time of access. No Red Bluff wait-time figure is published on this page, because none is published anywhere that can be trusted: the DMV’s statewide wait-times table carries a snapshot figure for Red Bluff, but a snapshot is not a promise, and this page will not print a number that misleads a reader into timing a trip around it. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines — that is a statewide pattern, not a Red Bluff measurement.

4Services at this office

The official Red Bluff office page lists the same full service set as a standard field office. The table below is that list, with the two things this office does not do marked plainly — the kiosk and the CDL test — because both are the services readers most often assume are available and then discover are not.

ServiceAt Red Bluff?Notes
Licensing services (new license, renewal, replacement)YesIn person. Renewals and replacements can usually be done online instead — see section 8.
Testing (behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, written)YesBehind-the-wheel tests are appointment-only. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm.
Title transfersYesIn person, or through one of the two in-town business partners for registration-only work.
Vehicle registrationYesRenewals are handled online or by mail; the DMV advises against booking an appointment for them.
Plates, permits & placardsYesIncludes disabled placards and permit applications.
Replace lost, stolen, or damaged documentsYesLicense, ID card, registration card, and plates — most replacements can be requested online.
Records (driving record requests)YesAlso available online; no appointment needed for the online request.
REAL IDYesFirst-time REAL ID is in person only. See section 7 for the document list.
Self-service DMV Now kioskNoNo kiosk at this office and none anywhere in Tehama County. Nearest verified kiosk: Chico, about 40 miles south.
CDL road test / noncommercial Class A or B testNoRed Bluff is absent from the DMV’s own Driving Test Sites list. Nearest CDL test site: Redding, about 30 miles north.

Payments accepted at the counter are cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order. No fee amounts are stated on this page: no license, REAL ID, registration, permit, or retest fee was verified for this office at build time, and this page will not print a figure from a single unverified source. Confirm the current fee on dmv.ca.gov before your visit. One figure that must not be attached to this office: the card fee in the DMV’s kiosk FAQ applies to kiosk transactions only, and Red Bluff has no kiosk.

The office’s phone number is 1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Red Bluff. The automated system is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

Book an appointment online at dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/select-appointment-type or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. That last sentence matters because a paid third-party booking service ranks in search results for this office, offering to find and book a DMV slot for a fee paid by Zelle. Never pay it. The DMV’s own appointment is free, and a third party cannot get you a slot the DMV does not have.

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services. Walk-ins are served, with appointment holders seen first, through the DMV’s same-day check-in system — Get in Line, with QR virtual intake added in April 2026. With only three open days a week, though, this office’s slots are scarcer than at a full-time office, and a walk-in on a Monday morning can mean a long wait for a service an appointment would have handled in minutes. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines; that is a statewide pattern, not a Red Bluff measurement.

The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only — you cannot walk in and take a road test. Book it well ahead, because a three-day-a-week office has fewer test slots than a full-time office, and a missed appointment means waiting for the next open day. If the Red Bluff test slots are booked out, check Willows on a Tuesday or Thursday, or Redding any weekday — any California field office can give the test, and the test does not have to be taken in the city where you live.

Just as important is what not to book. The DMV says appointments should not be made for registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record requests, or replacement licenses — there is no counter service for those, and booking one wastes a slot another reader needs. Do them online at dmv.ca.gov or by mail instead. That advice matters more in Tehama County than almost anywhere else in California, because the county’s only office is open just three days a week and the nearest full-time office is 30 miles away: every unnecessary visit is a trip someone else could have avoided, and every unnecessary appointment is a slot a driving-test candidate could have used.

If you do need to cancel or reschedule, do it through the same channels — dmv.ca.gov or 1-800-777-0133 — and do it as early as you can, so the slot goes back into the pool for another reader. The current reschedule and no-show rules should be confirmed on dmv.ca.gov at the time you book, because the DMV changes them; no retake or no-show figure is stated on this page because none was verified at build time.

6Driving tests at Red Bluff: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — and the CDL gap

Red Bluff offers three test types on site: the behind-the-wheel driving test, the motorcycle skills test, and the written knowledge test. That is the full test menu for a standard field office — and it is also the ceiling. It does not offer CDL road tests or noncommercial Class A or B tests: Red Bluff is absent from the DMV’s own Driving Test Sites list, while Redding is on it. If you need a CDL test, the nearest site is Redding (2135 Civic Center Drive), about 30 miles north on I-5, about 32 minutes away. Book the CDL appointment through the DMV’s drive-test system or by phone at 1-800-777-0133.

TestAt Red Bluff?What to know
Behind-the-wheel driving testYesAppointment-only. Bring a valid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, and a safe, roadworthy vehicle.
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered on site. Bring a motorcycle in safe operating condition and the required permit or license.
Written knowledge testYesNot given after 4:30 pm (statewide rule). Arrive early enough to finish paperwork, the vision exam, and the photo first.
CDL road testNoNearest CDL test site: Redding, about 30 miles north on I-5.
Noncommercial Class A / B testNoSame Redding answer — Red Bluff is not on the DMV’s Driving Test Sites list.

For the behind-the-wheel test, the examiner’s pre-drive check covers hand signals, lighting controls, windshield wipers, hazard lights, the defroster, the gears, and the parking brake — so check every one of those before you arrive, because a failed pre-drive check ends the test before the driving starts. The drive itself is typically 10–20 minutes of driving, varying by route and traffic — that is a statewide pattern, not a Red Bluff-measured figure. Bring a valid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, and a safe, roadworthy vehicle. Minors must have held the permit for at least 6 months, completed 50 hours of supervised practice (including 10 hours at night), and completed 6 hours of professional driver training.

Tehama County’s teens take their written test here more than anywhere else: the county’s drivers-ed guide names the Red Bluff DMV at 675 Monroe Street as the county’s only DMV option for the in-person written test, with the online supervised test as the alternative. If you are a parent booking a teen’s first test, the three-day week is the constraint to plan around — a failed test cannot be retaken the next day, because the office is closed the next day. Confirm the current retake waiting rule on dmv.ca.gov before you book; no retake interval is stated on this page because none was verified at build time.

Whether the Willows office offers behind-the-wheel or motorcycle tests was not verified at build time — the DMV lists “Testing” among Willows’ services but no per-test breakdown was found — so this page does not state test types for Willows. If you are counting on a Willows test slot, confirm it on dmv.ca.gov first. The same caution applies to Oroville: its test types were not verified, and this page does not guess them. Weaverville’s test types are now verified — drive, motorcycle, and written tests, no CDL test — see our Weaverville DMV guide.

7REAL ID at Red Bluff

Yes — you can get a REAL ID at the Red Bluff office. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page (form DL 1010) before your visit — do not improvise the list, and do not rely on a checklist from a third-party site, because the accepted documents are specific and a wrong document means a wasted trip.

Two things about REAL ID are worth stating plainly. First, enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025 (Transportation Security Administration). A standard California license is no longer accepted at airport security for domestic flights; a REAL ID, a U.S. passport, or another accepted federal document is required instead. One guide floating around online claims enforcement starts on a 2027 date — that is confused and wrong, and this page does not repeat the claim. Second, you no longer need to bring a Social Security card for a REAL ID: you provide the number and the DMV verifies it electronically — but confirm the current wording on dmv.ca.gov at the time of your visit, because the document rules are the part of REAL ID that changes most often.

Book an appointment for a first-time REAL ID. With only three open days a week, a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip — and a REAL ID visit is the worst kind of wasted trip, because it needs original documents that you may not be carrying on a casual visit. Renewing a license that already has a REAL ID, by contrast, can usually be done online. If your errand is only a renewal, do not spend one of this office’s scarce appointment slots on it.

8No kiosk, two business partners: how to skip the trip entirely

There is no self-service DMV Now kiosk at the Red Bluff field office — the official page carries no kiosk line, unlike the Chico office’s page, which says “Kiosk Available,” and no kiosk in Red Bluff or anywhere else in Tehama County was found. One machine-written page vaguely advises readers to “check the nearby Safeway or Raley’s” for a kiosk. No such retail kiosk was verified in Tehama County, and this page does not repeat that advice. The nearest verified kiosk is at the Chico DMV field office (107 Parmac Road #1), about 40 miles south — about 50 minutes — and it is worth the drive only if you need a kiosk transaction and cannot do it online.

One conflicting data point was found and is worth naming rather than hiding: a place-data entry lists a “California DMV Now Kiosk” at a Save Mart in Paradise as “Permanently Closed,” while the DMV’s QR site still carries a kiosk page for it. Until the official kiosk finder resolves that conflict, this page does not state a Paradise kiosk as a live alternative. Check the DMV’s kiosk finder on dmv.ca.gov before driving anywhere for a kiosk.

What Red Bluff does have, and most part-time offices do not, is two DMV business partners in town — both listed on the official Red Bluff office page under “Nearby Locations,” both open Monday–Friday 9:00 am–4:00 pm, which means they are open on the Tuesdays and Thursdays when the field office is closed:

PartnerAddress & hoursWhat they can do
Northern Permit Services LLC2140 Main Street, Suite B, Red Bluff, CA 96080 — Mon–Fri 9:00 am–4:00 pm, closed for lunch 12:00–1:00 pm — 1-530-727-9341Registration services only: title transfers, registration, plates, permits and placards, reinstatements. Walk-ins welcome. Additional fees may apply.
AUTHORITIES PLUS332 Pine Street, Suite H, Red Bluff, CA 96080 — Mon–Fri 9:00 am–4:00 pm — 1-530-515-6438Registration services only. Additional fees may apply.

The line that matters: a business partner is not a field office. Neither partner can issue a license, take a driving test, or do a REAL ID. They cover registration-only work on weekdays when the field office is closed, which is genuinely useful — a registration errand that would otherwise wait for Monday can be done on a Tuesday — but they cannot replace the field office for anything else, and they charge additional fees for the service. No AAA branch was verified in Tehama County; the nearest AAA branches named on official DMV pages are AAA Chico (2009 Forest Avenue, Suite 10, Chico) and AAA Oroville (2024 A Oro Dam Boulevard, Oroville), both member-use only.

For most errands, though, the best way to skip the trip is not a partner or a kiosk — it is the DMV’s online services. Most renewals, address changes, record requests, and replacement documents do not need any office visit at all: dmv.ca.gov online services, or by mail. That matters more in Tehama County than almost anywhere else in California, because the county’s only office is open just three days a week and the nearest full-time office is 30 miles away. Before you drive to Monroe Street, check whether the errand can be done from home — and if it can, do it there.

9Tehama County guide: Red Bluff or Willows — which office, which day

For almost every Tehama County resident, the honest answer is “Red Bluff on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; Willows on Tuesday and Thursday — between them, every weekday is covered along the I-5 corridor.” Redding is the only genuinely practical out-of-county fallback for CDL tests or when both corridor offices are closed on the day you need (weekends), and Chico is the nearest kiosk. The table below is the county’s day-by-day answer, town by town.

Where you liveYour DMV officeWhen
Red Bluff, Gerber, Proberta (I-5 corridor)Red Bluff — 675 Monroe StMon / Wed / Fri. Minutes away; the office is in the county seat, on I-5.
Corning, Los Molinos, Tehama, Paskenta, Flournoy, Newville (southern Tehama)Red Bluff — 675 Monroe StMon / Wed / Fri. Corning is about 21 miles south on I-5, about 20 minutes. There is no DMV in Corning itself — only a registration partner, Pelayo’s. On Red Bluff’s closed days, Willows (Tue/Thu) is about 25 minutes from Corning, or Chico (full-time) is about 40 miles south of Red Bluff.
Rancho Tehama Reserve (western Tehama)Red Bluff — 675 Monroe StMon / Wed / Fri, via State Route 36 and county roads. A long rural drive — book an appointment and bring every document, because a second trip is expensive. No drive time was verified; none is stated.
Paynes Creek, Manton, Mineral (eastern Tehama, Lassen foothills)Red Bluff — 675 Monroe StMon / Wed / Fri, via State Route 36. The nearest full-time alternatives for eastern residents are Redding (via State Route 44) or Chico — both long drives; no figures were verified.
Orland (just south of the county line, Glenn County)Willows (Tue/Thu) or Red Bluff (Mon/Wed/Fri)Orland has no DMV field office either, despite drivers-ed pages claiming one. Willows is the Glenn County seat office; Red Bluff is about 31 miles north on I-5, about 30 minutes.
Anywhere in Tehama County, on a Tuesday or ThursdayWillows — 815 N Humboldt AveTue / Thu, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. About 47 miles south of Red Bluff on I-5, about 46 minutes.
Anywhere in Tehama County, on a weekendNo DMV field office is openNo office in the county is open on weekends, and no Saturday hours were verified for Redding or Chico. Do the errand online, or wait for Monday.

The Oregon question does not apply here the way it does in border counties — but the Sacramento question does, and it deserves one plain sentence: Sacramento is about 131 miles south on I-5, about 2 hours and 7 minutes away, and nobody should drive there for DMV business when Redding, Chico, and Willows are all closer. Readers from the far south of the county sometimes assume Sacramento is the fallback. It is not; it is the farthest option on the list.

New residents get their own paragraph, because the deadlines are the most commonly reversed facts on the internet. If you just moved to Tehama County: vehicle registration is due within 20 days (California Vehicle Code §4152.5) and a California driver’s license within 10 days (Vehicle Code §12505(c)). Do not mix these up — they are different deadlines, and the internet reverses them constantly. Both can be started online at dmv.ca.gov before you visit the Red Bluff office on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, or Willows on a Tuesday or Thursday.

10If Red Bluff is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

All distances below are road distances from Red Bluff, marked approximate unless a source gives an exact figure. If a figure could not be confirmed, the row says so rather than inventing a false-precise number.

Sacramento DMV offices—~131 miles south on I-5; ~2 hrs 7 minNot a practical alternative — Redding, Chico, and Willows are all closer. Mentioned only to close the question, not as an option.

Orland and Corning do not appear in that table, and that is deliberate: neither has a DMV field office at all, so neither can be an alternative. Corning has only a registration partner; Orland has nothing. They are named in this guide only to correct the record and redirect their residents to Red Bluff or Willows.

11Best time to visit — what to bring — and summer on the valley floor

No Red Bluff-specific wait time is published, and this page will not invent one. The statewide pattern is what the evidence supports: arrive right at opening for the shortest lines, avoid the first and last days of the month when renewals cluster, and remember that this office’s scarcest resource is not the line but the calendar — three open days a week means a missed appointment costs you two days, not one. Monday mornings after a closed weekend are the busiest regular slot; Wednesday’s 9:00 am opening is the quietest regular start, because the office opens an hour later and the early crowd thins out. Those are patterns, not measurements, and they are labelled as such.

What to bring depends on the errand, and the checklist below covers the four visits this office sees most. Bring originals, not photocopies, wherever the list says so — the DMV does not accept copies for identity documents.

ErrandBring
First-time REAL IDOne proof of identity (original), your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency. Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page (form DL 1010) before your visit.
Behind-the-wheel testValid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, and a safe, roadworthy vehicle. Check the pre-drive items first: hand signals, lights, wipers, hazards, defroster, gears, parking brake.
License renewal (in person)Your current license and any renewal notice. Most renewals can be done online instead — check dmv.ca.gov before driving in.
Title transfer / registration (in person)The title (signed by the seller), a smog certificate if required, and proof of insurance. Registration-only work can also be done at either in-town business partner on a Tuesday or Thursday.
New resident (moved to Tehama County)Proof of identity and residency for the license (10-day deadline), and the vehicle’s title and registration for the registration (20-day deadline). Start both online at dmv.ca.gov before your visit.

One local note, because Red Bluff sits on the valley floor at about 300 feet elevation, not in the mountains: the Sacramento Valley in summer is extremely hot, and a midday wait outside the office needs water and shade. That is general advice, not a weather forecast — no temperature record or heat advisory is stated here, because those change with conditions. Check the National Weather Service Sacramento page (weather.gov/sto) before a summer visit, and do not leave children or pets in a parked car while you are inside.

12Why this office matters: the county seat’s three-day office, and the county that has only one

Red Bluff is a city of 14,710 people (2020 census) and the county seat of Tehama County, a county created in 1856 with Red Bluff chosen as its seat. It is the county’s largest city, which is why the county’s courts, recorder, and other official county functions sit in the city alongside the DMV — and why the DMV office here carries the whole county’s traffic on its three open days. For a county of 65,829 people spread across the I-5 corridor, the western ranch country, and the eastern Lassen foothills, one part-time office is the whole DMV system. Lose it for a day, and a third of the county’s week disappears; lose it for a week, and the county has no DMV at all.

The county has already seen what losing it looks like. The office opened in 1989 at this address, and in November 2010 it closed for five weeks for repairs — the first substantial work since it opened, according to the Red Bluff Daily News at the time. For five weeks, Tehama County residents were directed to Redding (30 miles), Chico (40 miles), and Willows (47 miles) — the same three alternatives this page verifies for today. The 2010 record is also the oldest proof that no second Tehama County office existed then either: if a DMV had stood in Corning, 21 miles south, it would have been named first. None was.

The office handled some 69,000 transactions a year in 2010, with five full-time and one part-time employee — a dated snapshot, not a current figure, and it is labelled as one. What has not changed since 2010 is the structure: one office, three days a week, one county. That is the clearest evidence that this is not a minor branch: for a county with only one office left, the three-day office on Monroe Street is the weekday DMV for most of the county, most of the week — and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, it is the only DMV office open anywhere in Tehama County.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the Red Bluff DMV office?

675 Monroe St, Red Bluff, CA 96080. It is in downtown Red Bluff — the county seat and largest city of Tehama County — just off Interstate 5 (Exits 647 and 649). Warning: one page ranking near the top of Google gives the wrong address, “705 Antelope Boulevard.” Do not go there — the DMV is on Monroe Street.

What are the Red Bluff DMV hours?

Monday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, every week. The office is also closed on state holidays, including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day) — one of its three normal open days. Warning: the DMV’s own place-data listing and several aggregators wrongly show Monday–Friday hours for this office. Trust the office page’s calendar, not the place card.

Is the Red Bluff DMV open on Tuesday or Thursday?

No — never. The office is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the nearest open DMV is Willows (815 N Humboldt Ave, 8:00 am–5:00 pm), about 47 miles south on I-5. On weekends no DMV field office is open anywhere in Tehama County.

Is the Red Bluff DMV open on Saturday?

No. The Red Bluff field office is closed every Saturday and Sunday. There is no Saturday DMV option in Tehama County; the nearest full-time offices are Redding and Chico, and no Saturday hours were verified for either — check on dmv.ca.gov before driving to either on a Saturday.

Do I need an appointment at the Red Bluff DMV?

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services; walk-ins are served through the DMV’s same-day check-in system, with appointment holders seen first. The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/select-appointment-type or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free — never pay a third-party service to book it for you. Do not book an appointment for a registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record request, or replacement license — those have no counter service and must be done online or by mail.

Can I walk into the Red Bluff DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most services — but expect to wait, because appointment holders are served first, and with only three open days a week the office’s slots are scarcer than at a full-time office. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. This is a statewide pattern; no Red Bluff-specific wait time is published.

Does the Red Bluff DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel tests require an appointment, and knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm. It does NOT offer CDL road tests or noncommercial Class A/B tests: Red Bluff is absent from the DMV’s own Driving Test Sites list. The nearest CDL test site is Redding (2135 Civic Center Dr), about 30 miles north on I-5.

Can I get a REAL ID at the Red Bluff DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page (form DL 1010) before your visit. REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025. Book an appointment — with only three open days a week, a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip.

Is there a DMV kiosk in Red Bluff?

No. The Red Bluff field office has no self-service DMV Now kiosk — the official page carries no kiosk line, unlike Chico’s page, which says “Kiosk Available” — and no kiosk was found anywhere else in Tehama County. The nearest verified kiosk is at the Chico DMV field office (107 Parmac Rd #1), about 40 miles south. For registration renewals and record requests, use dmv.ca.gov online services or mail instead of driving to the office.

What is the phone number for the Red Bluff DMV?

1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Red Bluff. The automated system is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Is the Red Bluff DMV the only DMV in Tehama County?

Yes. Red Bluff (675 Monroe St) is Tehama County’s only DMV field office, serving the whole county of about 65,829 people from the county seat. Corning has no DMV field office — only a registration business partner (Pelayo’s Registration Services, 1809 Solano St) — despite drivers-ed pages claiming a “Corning DMV,” and Orland has no DMV field office at all. When Red Bluff is closed, no DMV field office is open anywhere in the county; the nearest are Willows (Tue/Thu), Redding, and Chico.

What is the closest DMV to Red Bluff if this office is closed or booked?

Willows, about 47 miles south on I-5 (about 46 minutes) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you need a full-time office or a CDL test, Redding, about 30 miles north on I-5 (about 32 minutes), is the nearest. Chico, about 40 miles southeast (about 50 minutes), is the nearest full-time office to the south and the nearest kiosk. Distances are approximate.

Book Before You Drive to Red Bluff

Red Bluff is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only — and it is the only DMV field office in all of Tehama County, so its drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments on the I-5 corridor. Check the day, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, do it online instead of driving to Monroe Street.
