TL;DR

  • Address: 107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico, CA 95926 — north Chico, in the commercial area near the Highway 99 corridor. The “#1” suite number and the 95926 ZIP are part of the official address; the DMV’s own office page, its place data, and its August 2024 reopening press release all agree on them.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday. There is no 7:00 am Wednesday early opening at Chico and no Saturday opening at all — pages that claim either are wrong.
  • This week (November 9–13, 2026): open Monday November 9, Tuesday November 10, Thursday November 12, and Friday November 13. Closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day — every DMV field office in California is closed that day, and the office’s own dated calendar shows it.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Chico; no local number appears on the official Chico page at all.
  • Appointments: book on dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. An appointment is the shortest route to the counter, and the behind-the-wheel drive test is booked as an appointment. The DMV also offers Get in Line, its same-day virtual queue, started from home. No Chico-specific walk-in policy is published, so do not count on walking in for a drive test.
  • Kiosk: yes — this office has a self-service kiosk inside (“This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line,” on the DMV’s own page, and “Self Service Terminals” is the ninth service listed). A second DMV kiosk sits inside the Save Mart in Paradise, and a third cluster sits around Yuba City.
  • Tests: the office lists “Testing” among its services, which covers the written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel drive test. The official page states no motorcycle drive testing and no commercial drive testing at Chico, so this guide asserts neither.
  • REAL ID: offered here. A first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents — start the application online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov, upload your documents, print the confirmation code, and bring the code and the originals to the office to finish.
  • Butte County has two offices, not one: Chico is the county’s largest city, but Oroville — about 25 miles south on Highway 99 — is the county seat and has its own full-time field office with the same hours. Paradise, Gridley, and Biggs have no field office at all; Paradise has kiosks only.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses have no counter service — do them online, at the kiosk inside this office, through a DMV partner, or by mail, and do not drive to Parmac Road for them.
  • Saturday: the office is closed Saturdays and Sundays. The Saturday options are the AAA Chico Branch (members only, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm), Northern California Registration Services (10:00 am to 6:00 pm), and the grocery-store kiosks in Paradise and Yuba City, which run daily.

1The office at a glance: Butte County’s largest city

Chico is the most populous city in Butte County, in the northern Sacramento Valley, about 90 miles north of Sacramento on Highway 99. The 2020 census counted 101,475 people in Chico, and the Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 estimate puts the city at 105,081; Butte County as a whole counted 211,632 people in 2020. That makes the Chico field office the working DMV office for a city of more than a hundred thousand people plus the surrounding north-valley towns that have no office of their own — and it is the reason this page exists as a full guide rather than a bare address listing.

Chico is a college town. California State University, Chico — founded in 1887 as the Northern Branch of the State Normal School — sits in the city, and a large student population means a steady flow of first licenses, learner’s permits, and out-of-state transfers through this one office. If you are a Chico State student who moved to California for school, two deadlines matter and they are different numbers that the internet routinely reverses: you have 20 days to register your vehicle in California and 10 days to get a California driver’s license. Register the car within 20 days, license yourself within 10 — never the other way round.

The office itself is a straightforward, full-time field office. It closed for eleven days in August 2024 — August 8 to August 19 — to replace its roof, and reopened at 8:00 am on Monday, August 19, 2024, according to the DMV’s own press release of August 16, 2024. That release is also the source of the best REAL ID tip on this page: the DMV encouraged Chico customers to fill out the REAL ID application online first, upload their documents, print the confirmation code, and then visit the office to finalise — a sequence that still works today and is spelled out in section 7. The office has been operating normally since the reopening, and its page on dmv.ca.gov shows an active, dated two-week hours calendar, a services list, a kiosk banner, a payments line, and two official business partners.

One more orientation fact, because it confuses newcomers: Chico is the largest city in Butte County, but it is not the county seat. Oroville is. Oroville sits about 25 miles south on Highway 99 and has its own full-time DMV field office at 775 Mitchell Avenue with the same hours pattern as Chico. If Chico is booked, Oroville is the nearest full-service fallback, and it is the office most Chico residents should try first — not Red Bluff, not Yuba City, not Willows. The full alternatives table is in section 10.

Bidwell Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country, is Chico’s best-known landmark and the one most visitors know by name. It is not a directions landmark for the DMV — the office is on Parmac Road in north Chico, not at the park — but if you are new to town and someone tells you to meet them “by Bidwell Park,” you are in the right city and the wrong end of it for DMV business.

2Address — Parmac Road, north Chico

The Chico DMV field office is at 107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico, CA 95926. The address is confirmed three ways on official sources: the DMV’s office locator lists it, the office’s own field-office page carries it, and the DMV’s August 2024 reopening press release names the office as “the Chico office at 107 Parmac Road #1.” A fourth official confirmation comes from the DMV’s own Save Mart in Paradise kiosk page, which lists the Chico office at the same address among the nearby offices. The “#1” is a suite number, not a building number to drop — keep it in the address you type into your maps app — and 95926 is the office’s ZIP. Other Chico ZIP codes (95928, 95929, 95973) belong to other parts of the city, not to this office.

The office sits in north Chico, in the commercial area near the Highway 99 corridor. This guide does not assert a specific freeway exit, a specific cross-street, or a drive time from downtown Chico, because none of those was verified against an official source. Put “107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico, CA 95926” into your navigation and let it route you; the address itself is the verified fact, and the route is your maps app’s job.

Two name traps are worth clearing up before you search. First, “Parmac” is sometimes written out as “Parmac Road” and sometimes abbreviated “Parmac Rd” — they are the same street. Second, there is no second DMV office in Chico hiding under a different name: the Parmac Road office is the only DMV field office in the city. The other DMV presence in Chico is not an office at all — it is the two business partners on the official page (Northern California Registration Services on Nord Avenue and the AAA Chico Branch on Forest Avenue, both in section 11) and the self-service kiosk inside the field office itself.

If you are coming from Paradise, the town just south of Chico, do not look for a Paradise field office: there is not one. Paradise residents use the Chico office for counter business and the Save Mart kiosk in Paradise for renewals. If you are coming from Gridley or Biggs, the same applies — neither town has a field office. And if your search results show a “Corning DMV,” check the state: the Corning result that surfaces is a New York DMV office in Corning, New York, and it cannot do California business. There is no DMV field office in Corning, California.

3Hours — five days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week

The Chico DMV keeps the standard California field-office hours pattern: five days a week, a one-hour-later start on Wednesdays, and closed weekends. The table below is taken from the office’s own dated two-week calendar on dmv.ca.gov, read live on November 7, 2026, covering the weeks of November 2–7 and November 9–14, 2026.

DayHours
Monday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tuesday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Wednesday9:00 am – 5:00 pm (one hour later start)
Thursday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
SaturdayClosed
SundayClosed

Three things in that table deserve emphasis, because each one is something the internet gets wrong about this office. First, Wednesday opens at 9:00 am, not 8:00 am and not 7:00 am. A statewide hours guide in wide circulation claims that “approximately 60 high-volume offices offer a 7:00 am Wednesday early opening” and that Wednesday between 8:00 and 10:30 am is the best time to visit. Neither claim is true for Chico: the office does not open until 9:00 am on Wednesdays, so an 8:00 am Wednesday arrival finds a closed door. Second, Saturday is closed, every week. A thin affiliate-style page that ranks for Chico DMV queries claims the office is open Saturdays 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is not. The office’s own calendar shows Saturday closed in both weeks it publishes, and no California DMV field office opens on Saturday. Third, there is no lunch closure published for this office — each open day is one continuous slot. (Some small rural offices close for lunch; Chico’s page carries no such note.)

The week of November 9–13, 2026: the office is open Monday November 9, Tuesday November 10, Thursday November 12, and Friday November 13, all 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and closed Wednesday, November 11, for Veterans Day. That closure is not an assumption: the office’s own calendar for the week of November 9–14 shows Wednesday November 11 as closed, and Veterans Day is a state holiday on which DMV field offices close. The general rule is worth remembering for every holiday visit: DMV field offices close on state holidays, so check the office’s own calendar on dmv.ca.gov before driving in on or around a holiday. This guide publishes no holiday list beyond Veterans Day 2026, because only that date is evidenced on the calendar this office published.

A note on a quirk you may meet while checking hours yourself: some DMV listing pages — the office locator and the kiosk template pages — render Chico’s hours in text form as “Wed closed — closed.” That is a rendering artifact of the locator widget, not real hours. The office’s own field-office page, fetched the same morning, shows Wednesday November 4 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Wednesday November 11 closed for the holiday, and dozens of other dmv.ca.gov pages show the identical Mon–Tue 8–5, Wed 9–5, Thu–Fri 8–5 pattern. If a listing page tells you Wednesday is closed, trust the office’s own dated calendar instead — and if you are ever unsure, the calendar on the official Chico page is the authority.

Two timing details complete the picture. Written knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm, so a knowledge-test visit needs to start well before closing — do not arrive at 4:45 pm expecting to sit the test. And the statewide phone line, 1-800-777-0133, is automated around the clock, with representatives available Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The phone number itself is the DMV’s published statewide number; field offices do not publish direct local numbers, and no local number appears on the official Chico page.

4Services at this office

The official Chico page lists nine service groups under “Services Provided.” The table below reproduces those groups verbatim and explains each one in plain language at category level only — because the official page lists categories, not an itemised menu, this guide does not invent a line-by-line service list. If your errand falls inside one of these nine groups, the office can handle it; if it does not, check the “skip the trip” guidance in section 8 before you drive.

Service group (as listed by the DMV)What it covers, in plain language
Licensing ServicesDriver’s license and ID card applications, including first-time licenses and REAL ID — the in-person licensing work that cannot be done online.
TestingThe written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel drive test. See section 6 for what the office does and does not state about testing.
Title TransfersTransferring a vehicle title into your name — private sales, family transfers, and out-of-state titles brought into California.
RegistrationVehicle registration transactions that need the counter, including first-time California registration for a car you just brought into the state.
Plates, Permits, & PlacardsLicense plates including special and personalized plates, permits, and disabled-person parking placards.
Replace Lost/Stolen/DamagedReplacements for lost, stolen, or damaged licenses, ID cards, plates, stickers, and titles — noting that many replacements can now be done online instead (section 8).
RecordsDriver records and vehicle records — the printouts people need for court, insurance, or employment checks.
Request miscellaneous original documentsOriginal documents the DMV issues that are not covered by the groups above — ask at the counter or on dmv.ca.gov whether your document needs a visit.
Self Service TerminalsThe self-service kiosk inside the office — registration renewal, replacement stickers and cards, and record requests without the counter line. See section 8.

What the list does not say matters as much as what it does. The official page states no motorcycle drive testing at Chico and no commercial drive testing at Chico, so this guide asserts neither — if you need a motorcycle skills test or a CDL road test, check the DMV’s office pages for the offices that publish those tests before you book, and do not assume Chico offers them. The Yuba City office page, by contrast, explicitly notes a 40-foot vehicle-length limit for its commercial drive tests, which shows the DMV does publish such limits when they apply; Chico carries no such note, so this guide says nothing about commercial testing here either way. And the nine groups are categories, not a promise that every sub-transaction inside a category is available on every day — a drive test, for example, is an appointment transaction inside the Testing group, not a walk-in one.

One more boundary: the counter is not the place for routine renewals. Registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your renewal notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses have no counter service at California DMV field offices — those transactions go online, to a kiosk, through a partner, or by mail. If your only errand is one of those, do not drive to Parmac Road for it; section 8 shows the faster routes.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

Book online at dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. Those are the two booking routes the DMV publishes, and they are the only two this guide recommends. Appointments on dmv.ca.gov are free — booking costs nothing, and any third-party site that charges you to book a DMV appointment is selling you something the DMV gives away. Never pay a booking site.

The DMV runs two appointment types statewide: a field-office visit appointment and a behind-the-wheel drive-test appointment. In practice that means the drive test is an appointment transaction — you book it, you do not walk in for it — while most other counter business can be booked as a field-office visit appointment. An appointment is the shortest route to the counter for anything that needs it, and it is the only sensible way to plan a drive test or a first-time REAL ID, where arriving without the right documents wastes the whole trip.

The DMV’s same-day alternative to a future-dated appointment is Get in Line, the “get in line today” option you start from home on dmv.ca.gov. It exists, it is official, and it is the right tool when you need to be seen today and no appointment is available. What this guide does not do is promise same-day availability at Chico, quote a wait, or describe a walk-in policy for this office, because the DMV publishes no Chico-specific walk-in policy and no same-day availability promise. The honest framing is this: book an appointment for the shortest visit; use Get in Line if you need today; and do the online-or-kiosk check in section 8 first, because the fastest visit to the Chico DMV is very often no visit at all.

What you will not find on this page, deliberately, is a set of confident numbers about booking lead times. Content farms that rank for DMV appointment queries claim that appointments are “typically available within two to four weeks,” that road tests can be booked “up to 60 days in advance,” and that you can cancel or reschedule “up to 24 hours before.” None of those figures is verified against dmv.ca.gov for Chico, and this guide does not repeat them. Availability is live and changes by the day; the only honest answer is to open the DMV’s appointment system and look at what it offers for Chico right now. The same restraint applies to rescheduling and to late or missed appointments: the DMV publishes no blanket late or no-show penalty rule that this guide can honestly quote for Chico, so no such rule appears here. If your plans change, use the DMV’s own appointment system to change them — do not rely on a third-party page’s version of the rules.

A practical booking tip that is verified, not invented: start the paperwork online before you book. For a REAL ID, that means the online application at REALID.dmv.ca.gov (section 7). For a registration or title transfer, it means gathering the title, the smog certification where one is required, and proof of insurance before you choose a date — the appointment is wasted if the documents are not in the car with you. And for a new California resident, remember the two clocks: 20 days to register the vehicle, 10 days to get the license, counted from the day you establish residency.

6Driving tests at Chico: knowledge and behind-the-wheel — and what is not stated

The Chico office lists “Testing” among its services. In DMV terms that covers the two tests a new driver needs: the written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel drive test. Book the drive test as an appointment through dmv.ca.gov, and bring a roadworthy, registered, and insured vehicle to test in — the car you bring must be street-legal and insured, and your proof of insurance must meet California’s minimums, which are 30/60/15 (thirty thousand dollars per person, sixty thousand per accident, fifteen thousand for property damage) under the law that took effect January 1, 2025. Out-of-state insurance policies are not accepted for a California registration or test, so a policy from another state needs to be replaced with a California policy first.

The knowledge test has a clock on it that catches people out: written and knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm. A 4:00 pm arrival for a knowledge test is cutting it fine; a 4:45 pm arrival is too late. Plan a morning visit for a knowledge test, and remember that Wednesdays do not open until 9:00 am, so the first knowledge-test slot on a Wednesday is later than on other days.

For teenagers, the learner’s permit path is the one most Chico families ask about, and the outline is set by the California Driver Handbook: the minimum age for a learner’s permit is 15½, driver education must be completed, and a parent or guardian must be involved. Chico’s two local driving schools describe the same path, and one of them — Stallion School, a DMV-licensed school in Chico — cites the Driver Handbook for the detail that under-18s wait 14 days before retesting after a failed drive test. That 14-day interval is reported here as the driving school’s FAQ states it, citing the handbook; it is not quoted as DMV text, and if your retest date matters, confirm it on dmv.ca.gov or at the counter. What this guide will not do is describe a Chico drive-test route, street by street or in general terms. Test routes are not published by the DMV, they change, and any page that prints one is guessing — the honest preparation is to know the rules of the road and to be comfortable driving on Chico’s streets, not to memorise someone else’s claimed route.

Two things the official Chico page does not state, and this guide therefore does not assert: motorcycle drive testing and commercial drive testing. The page lists “Testing” as a category and says nothing more. If you need a motorcycle skills test, check the office pages of the surrounding offices — the DMV publishes motorcycle testing where it is offered — and do not drive to Chico assuming it is available. The same applies to a CDL road test, with the added note that the Yuba City office, about 46 miles south, explicitly limits its commercial tests to vehicles no longer than 40 feet; that limit is published on Yuba City’s page and is the kind of detail to check before booking a commercial test anywhere.

One last test-day fact, because it decides whether the visit happens at all: bring the documents. A first license or permit visit needs the application, proof of identity and residency, and, for a minor, a parent or guardian — and the DMV accepts originals only, not photocopies. A drive-test visit needs the appointment confirmation, a valid permit or license as applicable, and the registered, insured vehicle. Arriving without any one of those is the most common reason a test day ends before it starts.

7REAL ID at Chico

A first-time REAL ID requires an office visit to complete — that is the rule, and Chico is a full-service office where you can complete it. The smartest way to do it is the sequence the DMV itself recommended to Chico customers when this office reopened after its roof replacement in August 2024: start the application online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov, fill out the application, upload your documents, and print the confirmation code — then bring the code and your original documents to the office to finalise. The online start does not replace the visit; it shortens it, because the office step is verification of the documents you already uploaded.

Bring originals only. The DMV does not accept photocopies for a REAL ID, and the single most common reason a REAL ID visit fails is arriving with a copy of a document instead of the original. The DMV’s REAL ID document checklist on dmv.ca.gov is the authoritative list of what counts — this guide does not reproduce a document checklist as exhaustive, because the checklist is the DMV’s to maintain and it changes. Check it before you drive, gather the originals it names, and bring the printed confirmation code from your online application.

Book an appointment for the REAL ID visit. It is the one errand where an appointment pays for itself twice: it reserves your place, and it forces you to choose a date after you have the documents ready, instead of arriving on a hopeful morning and discovering a missing birth certificate at the counter. A REAL ID visit also takes longer than a renewal, because the verification step is the point of the visit — do not schedule it for the last hour of the day, and remember that Wednesday does not open until 9:00 am.

Two things this guide deliberately leaves out. No REAL ID fee figure appears anywhere on this page: fee figures for this topic are gated in our research file until they are re-verified on dmv.ca.gov, and this page prints no fee dollar amount of any kind. And no REAL ID enforcement date appears here either, for the same reason. If you need the current fee or the current enforcement date, the DMV’s own REAL ID pages are the source — this guide points you there instead of printing a figure that could be stale by the time you read it.

8Kiosk — and how to skip the trip entirely

The fastest transaction at the Chico DMV may be the one that never reaches the counter. The office has a self-service kiosk inside, and the DMV’s own page says so in plain words: “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line. DMV kiosks are convenient and offer services that are quick and easy. No wait times and open daily!” The kiosk is on site at the field office, so it follows the office’s hours — it is not a 24-hour grocery-store machine, and it is not open on Saturday or Sunday when the office is closed. “Self Service Terminals” is also the ninth service group on the office’s own services list, which is a second confirmation that the kiosk is really there.

DMV Now kiosks handle the quick transactions: registration renewal, replacement stickers and registration cards, and driver and vehicle record requests, with the exact range varying by kiosk location. That is the general, official description, and this guide does not publish an exhaustive per-kiosk menu, because the range does vary by location and the DMV does not publish a Chico-specific kiosk menu. The rule of thumb is simple: if your errand is a renewal, a replacement sticker or card, or a record, try the kiosk — in the office or at one of the grocery-store kiosks below — before you join the counter line.

The wider point is that the counter is the wrong place for a whole class of errands. Registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your renewal notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses have no counter service at California DMV field offices. They go online at dmv.ca.gov, to a kiosk, through a DMV partner, or by mail. The DMV’s own guidance steers exactly those transactions away from the counter, and the office’s kiosk exists precisely to absorb them. Before you drive to Parmac Road, ask the one question that saves the trip: can this be done online or at a kiosk? If the answer is yes, the office visit is optional, not necessary.

For the times the office really is needed — a first license, a drive test, a REAL ID, a title transfer that needs the counter — the kiosk cluster around Chico is still useful, because a renewal that can be done at a grocery-store kiosk on a Sunday frees the weekday office visit for the errand that actually needs it. The table below is the verified cluster: the kiosk inside the Chico office, the Save Mart kiosk in Paradise, and the Yuba City kiosks to the south.

Kiosk existence verified on dmv.ca.gov — confirm the kiosk is in service on the DMV’s kiosk page before a special trip.

One kiosk that is not in the table, deliberately: a DMV kiosk was placed at the Paradise Post Office (6469 Clark Road) according to a USPS release from November 2021. That release is five years old, the kiosk does not appear in the DMV’s current kiosk listings, and its currency in 2026 is not confirmed — so it is not listed as a current kiosk here. If you are in Paradise and the Save Mart kiosk is the one you need, the Save Mart is the verified option; the post-office kiosk is a historical note, not a direction.

And a note for Red Bluff readers who land on this page: Red Bluff has no kiosk at this office and none anywhere in Tehama County. The nearest verified kiosk to Red Bluff is this one — the Chico field office kiosk, about 40 miles south — which is why the Red Bluff guide sends its kiosk business here. If you are driving from Red Bluff for a kiosk transaction, the Save Mart in Paradise is closer than Chico itself only if your errand is one the grocery-store kiosk can do; the office kiosk in Chico handles the fuller range.

9Butte County guide: which town, which office

Butte County has two DMV field offices, and knowing which one serves your town saves a wasted drive. Chico, in the north of the county, is served by this office on Parmac Road. Oroville, the county seat in the south of the county, is served by the Oroville field office at 775 Mitchell Avenue, Oroville, CA 95965 — a full-time office with the same hours pattern as Chico (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday). The two offices are about 25 miles apart on Highway 99, roughly a 30-minute drive, and they are genuine alternatives to each other: if one is booked, try the other before you look further afield.

Every other Butte County town funnels into one of those two offices. Paradise, the town just south of Chico, has no field office — its DMV presence is the Save Mart kiosk on Clark Road and nothing else. Gridley and Biggs, in the south of the county, have no field office either; their nearest offices are Yuba City to the south and Oroville to the north. The table below is the county at a glance.

TownDMV presenceWhere to go
ChicoField office + kioskThis office: 107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico, CA 95926. Full-time, 9 services, kiosk inside.
Oroville (county seat)Field officeOroville field office: 775 Mitchell Ave, Oroville, CA 95965. Full-time, same hours as Chico. AAA Oroville Branch (2024-A Oro Dam Blvd, members only) for registration work.
ParadiseKiosk only — no field officeSave Mart kiosk, 6636 Clark Rd, Paradise, for renewals and records. Counter business goes to Chico.
Gridley / BiggsNo field office, no kiosk verifiedNearest offices are Oroville (north) and Yuba City (south, about 46 miles from Chico). Check the DMV locator for the current nearest kiosk.

One county fact that surprises people: Chico is the largest city in Butte County, but Oroville is the county seat — the county government sits in Oroville, not Chico. Do not reverse them. And a second surprise for anyone who has lived here a while: Paradise’s population fell sharply after the 2018 Camp Fire, and the town’s 2020 census count was 4,764. That is the context for why Paradise residents are such a large share of the Chico office’s customers — their town has a kiosk, not an office, so every counter errand brings them to Parmac Road. This guide says no more about the fire than that, because no Camp Fire DMV statistics were verified.

10If Chico is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

If the Chico office is booked on the day you need, closed for a holiday, or simply the wrong office for the test you need, the alternatives below are the verified ones — each checked on its own official dmv.ca.gov page. They are ordered by distance from Chico, and the two part-time offices carry warnings in bold, because a part-time office is the easiest way to waste a morning: the office is real, the address is right, and the door is locked because it is not that office’s day.

OfficeAddressHoursDistance from ChicoNotes
Oroville775 Mitchell Ave, Oroville, CA 95965Mon–Fri 8–5; Wed 9–5; Sat–Sun closedAbout 25 miles south via Hwy 99 (roughly 30 minutes)Nearest full-service alternative. Same hours as Chico. AAA Oroville Branch nearby (members only).
Willows815 N Humboldt Ave, Willows, CATue & Thu only, 8–5Southwest via Hwy 32 and I-5Part-time: open only Tuesdays and Thursdays. Smallest nearby option; check the day before you drive.
Red Bluff675 Monroe St, Red Bluff, CA 96080Mon, Wed & Fri only (Mon/Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5; Tue & Thu closed)About 40 miles north (roughly 50 minutes)Part-time: closed Tuesdays and Thursdays. No kiosk in Tehama County — the nearest kiosk is this Chico office. See our Red Bluff guide. Do not use the address “705 Antelope Blvd” found on one third-party page — it is wrong; the official address is 675 Monroe St.
Yuba City1570 Poole Blvd, Yuba City, CA 95991Mon–Fri 8–5; Wed 9–5; Sat–Sun closedAbout 46 miles south via Hwy 99Full-service office with a self-serve kiosk on site. Commercial drive tests are limited to vehicles no longer than 40 feet. FoodMaxx kiosk nearby (1231 Colusa Ave, 6 am–midnight daily).

Distances above are approximate driving distances from third-party distance sources, labelled as such — they are planning figures, not surveyed measurements. The Willows distance is given without a mileage figure at all, because no distance source was verified for it; the direction and the route are the verified facts there. What is verified to the address and the hour for every row is the office itself: each address and each hours pattern above was read on that office’s own dmv.ca.gov page.

The part-time trap deserves one more sentence, because it is the single most useful fact on this page after Chico’s own hours. Red Bluff is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only; Willows is open Tuesday and Thursday only. Between them they cover the week, but neither one covers it alone — a reader who drives to Red Bluff on a Tuesday finds a closed office, and a reader who drives to Willows on a Monday finds the same. Chico and Oroville are the only full-time offices in the area, and Yuba City is the third. If the day you need is a Tuesday or a Thursday, Willows is open and Red Bluff is not; if it is a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, Red Bluff is open and Willows is not; if it is a Saturday or Sunday, none of them is open, and the kiosks and partners are the only options.

Further afield, Redding (about 30 miles north of Red Bluff on I-5) is the fallback for CDL tests and for days when both corridor offices are closed, and Sacramento is roughly 90 miles south — too far to be a practical alternative for a Chico errand. This guide does not publish a Redding or Sacramento row, because neither office’s page was verified in this research run; the DMV locator will give you their current hours if you need them.

11Best time to visit, what to bring, and getting there

Best time to visit. No “best time” is published for this office, and this guide does not invent one. The DMV publishes live appointment and non-appointment wait times per office on its current field office wait times page — check it on the morning you plan to go, because the numbers change by the minute and any minute figure printed here would be stale before you read it. What can be said honestly is structural: Wednesdays start an hour later than other days, so a Wednesday visit cannot start before 9:00 am; knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm, so a test visit must start well before closing; and the day before or after a state holiday is the week’s busiest counter day at any field office, so a mid-week, non-holiday visit is the calmer choice. The generic advice in circulation that “Wednesday between 8:00 and 10:30 am is best” is wrong for Chico twice over: the office does not open until 9:00 am on Wednesdays, and no best-time claim for this office has ever been verified.

What to bring. The checklist depends on the visit, and the common thread is originals: the DMV accepts original documents only, not photocopies. For a REAL ID, bring the printed confirmation code from your online application at REALID.dmv.ca.gov and the original documents from the DMV’s REAL ID checklist. For a learner’s permit or first license, bring the application, proof of identity and residency, and — for a minor — a parent or guardian; driver education must be completed first. For a behind-the-wheel drive test, bring your appointment confirmation, your permit or license as applicable, and a roadworthy, registered, insured vehicle with proof of insurance meeting the 30/60/15 minimums. For a registration or title transfer, bring the title, a smog certification where one is required, and proof of insurance — and remember the new-resident clocks, 20 days to register the vehicle and 10 days to get the license. For a replacement, check first whether the replacement can be done online or at the kiosk, because the counter may not be able to help you at all.

Partners who can do registration work. The official Chico page lists two DMV-authorized business partners. They are not DMV offices, and they charge their own fees on top of the DMV’s — the DMV’s own wording, kept verbatim here, is “Additional fees may be applied by this partner.” For registration-only errands they are often faster than the field office, and both are open on Saturdays when the field office is closed.

PartnerAddressHoursPhoneNotes
Northern California Registration Services2233 Nord Ave #4, Chico, CA 95926Mon–Sat 10:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sun closed1-530-342-3876DMV-authorized registration services. Additional fees may be applied by this partner.
AAA Chico Branch2009 Forest Ave Ste 10, Chico, CA 95928Mon–Fri 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sun closed1-530-332-2600Member use only. DMV services at AAA are for AAA members — do not present AAA as a walk-in public alternative.
AAA Oroville Branch2024-A Oro Dam Blvd, Oroville, CA 95966Mon–Fri 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sun closed1-530-538-8900Member use only. Listed on the official Chico-area pages; the Oroville option for AAA members.

One caution on the AAA hours above: the hours printed are the branch hours from the DMV’s own partner listing. AAA’s own site lists slightly different DMV-service desk hours for the Chico branch; this guide prints the DMV listing’s hours and the “member use only” condition, and does not print AAA’s desk hours, because the two sources conflict and the DMV’s listing is the authority for this page. No other Chico registration service, driving school, or third-party “DMV services” business is presented here as a DMV partner, because no other business is on the official Chico page. Chico’s local driving schools — including Stallion School, a DMV-licensed school at 30 Landing Circle, Suite 102 — are driving schools, not DMV partners, and they are mentioned here only in that neutral sense.

Getting there without a car. B-Line, Butte County’s regional transit system, serves Chico, Oroville, Paradise, and the other Butte County communities. Its schedule book lists a “DMV” timepoint and a “Parmac Rd” timepoint on Route 2 (Mangrove), which runs between Downtown Chico (Chico Transit Center, 2nd & Salem) and the Ceres and Lassen area — and Route 20 (Chico–Oroville) connects Chico and Oroville for readers using the Oroville alternative. That is as far as this guide goes on transit detail: the schedule book proves a Route 2 stop labelled “DMV” exists, but it does not prove the exact boarding point, the side of the road, or the current stopping pattern at Parmac Road, so no timetable, fare, or walking distance from a stop is printed here. Check the current schedule at blinetransit.com before you travel (B-Line information: (530) 342-0221), and plan the return trip too — a visit that ends at 4:45 pm needs a bus that still runs after it. One dated alert is worth a line: B-Line rider alerts note road construction on the East 20th Street corridor in Chico from July 7, 2026, expected through Fall 2026, affecting Routes 5, 7, 14, 17, 20, and 41. Route 2 is not listed among the affected routes, but Route 20 riders heading to Oroville should check the alert before they travel.

Parking. Parking information is not published by the DMV for this office, and this guide makes no parking claim of any kind — no “free parking,” no lot size, no street-parking advice. That is an honest gap, not an oversight: no official source states it, so it stays blank rather than guessed.

12Why this page matters: the errors the internet makes about the Chico DMV

Most of what the internet says about the Chico DMV is either thin or wrong, and the wrong parts are specific enough to ruin a morning. This section names them, so you can recognise them when you meet them elsewhere — and so you can see what this guide did differently.

The Saturday-hours error. A thin affiliate-style page that ranks for Chico DMV queries claims the office is open Saturdays 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is closed every Saturday and Sunday. That page gives no kiosk, no partners, no appointment guidance, and no nearby offices either — it is an address and a wrong hours line, and the wrong hours line is the part that costs you a drive.

The 7:00 am Wednesday error. A statewide hours guide in wide circulation claims that “approximately 60 high-volume offices offer a 7:00 am Wednesday early opening,” that “only a small number of offices open on Saturdays”, and that “Wednesday is the best day” between 8:00 and 10:30 am. All three claims are wrong for Chico: the office opens at 9:00 am on Wednesdays, never opens on Saturday, and the “best” window it names starts an hour before the doors open. Statewide generalities pasted over a local query are the pattern here, and the fix is a Chico-specific hours table taken from the office’s own dated calendar — which is section 3 of this guide.

The confident appointment numbers. A cluster of content-farm appointment guides states, as fact, that DMV appointments are “typically available within two to four weeks,” that road tests can be booked “up to 60 days in advance,” that you can cancel or reschedule “up to 24 hours before,” and that “walk-ins are not accepted at most locations.” None of those figures is verified against dmv.ca.gov for Chico, and this guide prints none of them. The DMV’s appointment system is live and the honest answer to “how soon can I get in?” is to open it and look. A page that gives you a confident number for a live system is guessing, and the guess is the product.

The wrong Red Bluff address. A third-party Red Bluff page gives that office’s address as 705 Antelope Boulevard. The official address is 675 Monroe Street, Red Bluff, CA 96080 — verified on the DMV’s own Red Bluff page and on this site’s Red Bluff guide. It is a small error with a large consequence, because it sends you to the wrong street in the wrong part of town. Every nearby-office address on this page was read on that office’s own dmv.ca.gov page for exactly this reason.

The stale-fee trap, avoided. This page prints no fee dollar amount of any kind. That is deliberate: the fee figures that circulate for California DMV transactions include figures that changed on January 1, 2026, figures that conflict between sources, and figures that belong to a different line item than the one they are quoted for. A page that prints a stale fee sends you to the counter with the wrong amount of money; a page that prints no fee and points you at the DMV’s own fee pages sends you with the right one. For the current fee for your transaction, check dmv.ca.gov before your visit.

What this guide offers instead of those errors is the boring, checkable kind of usefulness: the address as the DMV prints it, the hours as the office’s own calendar shows them, the services as the DMV lists them, the kiosk as the DMV describes it, the partners as the DMV names them, and the alternatives as each office’s own page states them — with the gaps left visibly blank where nothing was verified. That is the whole method, and it is the reason the page carries a verification date at the bottom instead of a publication date at the top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Chico DMV hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday. The office is closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Veterans Day. Hours are taken from the office’s own dated two-week calendar on dmv.ca.gov, read live on November 7, 2026.

Is the Chico DMV open on Saturday?

No. The Chico DMV is closed every Saturday and Sunday, and no California DMV field office opens on Saturday. Any page claiming Saturday hours for Chico — one affiliate page claims 8:00 am to 1:00 pm — is out of date or wrong. The Saturday options are the AAA Chico Branch (members only, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm), Northern California Registration Services (10:00 am to 6:00 pm), and the grocery-store kiosks in Paradise and Yuba City.

Where is the Chico DMV located?

107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico, CA 95926, in north Chico near the Highway 99 corridor. The address is confirmed by the DMV’s office locator, the office’s own field-office page, and the DMV’s August 2024 reopening press release. Keep the “#1” suite number in the address you navigate to.

What is the phone number for the Chico DMV?

The DMV’s statewide number is 1-800-777-0133 (automated around the clock; representatives Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm). Field offices do not publish direct local numbers on dmv.ca.gov, and no local number appears on the official Chico page.

Do I need an appointment at the Chico DMV?

Book an appointment online at dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133 for the shortest visit, and book one for a drive test or a first-time REAL ID. The DMV also offers a same-day Get in Line option, started from home on dmv.ca.gov. No Chico-specific walk-in policy is published, so do not count on walking in for a drive test — and many transactions (renewals, records, replacements) can be completed online or at a kiosk without a visit at all.

How do I make an appointment at the Chico DMV?

Go to dmv.ca.gov, choose the appointment service, select Chico as the location, and pick a date and time; or call 1-800-777-0133. Appointments are free — never pay a third-party site to book one. This guide prints no booking lead-time figure, because availability is live and changes daily; the DMV’s appointment system shows what is actually available for Chico right now.

Does the Chico DMV have a kiosk?

Yes — there is a self-serve DMV Now kiosk on site at the Chico office, for registration renewal and similar quick transactions. The DMV’s own page says: “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line.” The kiosk follows office hours and is closed weekends. A second kiosk sits inside the Save Mart in Paradise, and Yuba City has a grocery-store kiosk and an on-site office kiosk.

What services does the Chico DMV offer?

Licensing services (driver’s licenses and ID cards, including REAL ID), testing (the written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel drive test), title transfers, registration, plates, permits, and placards, replacements for lost or stolen items, records, miscellaneous original documents, and self-service terminals. Those are the nine service groups on the official Chico page, described here at category level only — the page does not publish an itemised menu, and it states no motorcycle or commercial drive testing at Chico.

What forms of payment does the Chico DMV accept?

Cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order — verbatim from the official Chico page. No surcharge claim and no card-brand claim is made here, because none is stated officially.

What do I need to bring for a REAL ID at the Chico DMV?

Start the application online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov, upload your documents, print the confirmation code, and bring the code and your original documents to the office to finish — a REAL ID requires an office visit to complete, and the DMV accepts originals only, not photocopies. Check the DMV’s REAL ID document checklist for the exact documents. No REAL ID fee figure is printed on this page.

Can I take my driving test at the Chico DMV?

The Chico office lists “Testing” among its services, which covers the written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel drive test. Book a drive-test appointment through dmv.ca.gov and bring a registered, insured vehicle; knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm. This guide describes no test route, and it asserts no motorcycle or commercial drive testing at Chico, because the official page states neither.

What if the Chico DMV is booked or closed — where else can I go?

Oroville (775 Mitchell Ave, about 25 miles south, same hours) is the nearest full-service office. Red Bluff (675 Monroe St, about 40 miles north) is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only — closed Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yuba City (1570 Poole Blvd, about 46 miles south) is full-service with a kiosk. Willows (815 N Humboldt Ave) is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only. For registration-only errands, the Save Mart kiosk in Paradise or the DMV partners in Chico (Northern California Registration Services, 2233 Nord Ave; AAA Chico Branch for members, 2009 Forest Ave) may be faster. Each office above was verified on its own dmv.ca.gov page.

Book Before You Drive to Chico

Chico is open five days a week with a Wednesday 9:00 am start, and it is the only full-time DMV office for a city of more than a hundred thousand people plus the north-valley towns that have no office of their own — and its drive-test and REAL ID appointments are the visits that punish an unprepared arrival most. Check the day, check the Wednesday 9:00 am open, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, use dmv.ca.gov, the kiosk inside this office, or the Save Mart kiosk in Paradise instead of waiting in the counter line.
