Indio DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The eastern anchor of the Coachella Valley’s three-office cluster — a full-time, full-service office on Jackson Street with a self-service kiosk inside, behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written tests, and REAL ID. It does not do CDL tests, it is not open on Saturday, and it is not the county seat and not the county’s only office: Riverside County has nine field offices plus a limited-service Express office. Renewals, records, and replacement licenses get no counter service here. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

TL;DR

  • Address: 44480 Jackson Street, Indio, CA 92201 — on Jackson Street at Avenue 44, in the eastern Coachella Valley. Do not follow listings that give “81-633 Highway 111” — that address is wrong; the DMV’s own page, its place data, and its press releases all say 44480 Jackson Street.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday. No lunch closure — each open day is one continuous slot.
  • This week (November 9–13, 2026): open Monday November 9, Tuesday November 10, Thursday November 12, and Friday November 13. Closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day — every DMV field office in California is closed that day.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Indio; no phone number appears on the official Indio page at all.
  • Appointments: book on dmv.ca.gov or by phone. An appointment is recommended but not required for most counter business — except the behind-the-wheel drive test, which is appointment-only. Get in Line (the DMV’s same-day virtual queue) runs Monday to Friday, 7:50 am to 4:00 pm, and 8:50 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays.
  • Kiosk: yes — this office has a self-service kiosk inside (“Self Service Terminals” is the ninth service on the DMV’s own page). A second DMV Now kiosk sits at Ralphs in Indio, 49908 Jefferson Street, open Monday to Sunday 5:00 am to 1:00 am.
  • Tests: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle skills, and written knowledge tests are offered here. CDL tests are not offered — the nearest CDL test site is El Centro, about 74.4 miles away in a straight line.
  • REAL ID: offered here. A first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents — book an appointment and bring the documents, or the trip is wasted.
  • The valley cluster: Indio is one of three full-service offices within 19 miles of each other — Palm Desert (9.1 miles, kiosk inside) and Palm Springs (19 miles, no kiosk). If Indio is booked, Palm Desert is the first alternate; if Palm Desert is booked, Indio is the DMV’s own first alternate — when Palm Desert closed temporarily September 18–28, 2026, the DMV’s press release named Indio first.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses have no counter service — do them online, at a kiosk, through a partner, or by mail, and do not drive to Jackson Street for them.
  • Saturday: the office is closed Saturdays. The Saturday options are the AAA branches in La Quinta and Palm Springs (members only, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm) and the Ralphs kiosk in Indio (5:00 am to 1:00 am). No DMV field office in the valley is open on Saturday.
  • Not the county seat, not the only office: Riverside city is the county seat, and Riverside County has nine DMV field offices plus the Murrieta Express office. Fourteen Riverside County towns — including Coachella, La Quinta, and Moreno Valley — have no DMV office at all, and there is no “Coachella DMV”: Coachella has DMV Partner businesses, not a DMV office.

1The valley’s eastern anchor: one of nine, not one of one

Indio is the largest city in the Coachella Valley — 89,137 people at the 2020 census, up from 76,036 in 2010, and an estimated 94,269 on July 1, 2025 — and its DMV office is the valley’s eastern anchor: the full-service, full-time, kiosk-equipped office that serves Indio itself plus Coachella, Thermal, and Mecca to the south and east, and the whole eastern end of the valley. That is the honest frame for this office, and it matters because two assumptions readers bring to this page are both wrong. The first is that Indio is the county seat and the county’s only DMV office. It is neither. The county seat of Riverside County is the city of Riverside, about 69.6 miles west in a straight line, and Riverside County has nine full-service DMV field offices plus one limited-service Express office. The second is that a city this size must have a DMV office in every neighbouring town. It does not: fourteen Riverside County towns checked on November 6, 2026 have no field office at all, and their residents drive to Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, or one of the other six offices.

The nine full-service offices in Riverside County are Indio (44480 Jackson Street), Palm Desert (74-740 Technology Drive), Palm Springs (950 North Farrell Drive), Riverside (6280 Brockton Avenue), Riverside East (6425 Sycamore Canyon Boulevard), Hemet (1200 South State Street), Temecula (27851 Diaz Road), Norco (3201 Horseless Carriage Road), and Blythe (430 South Broadway — open Tuesday and Thursday only). The tenth DMV location in the county is the Murrieta Express office (27890 Clinton Keith Road, Suite F), a limited-service office that takes walk-ins only, takes no appointments, and takes card payments only; it opened on May 16, 2024 as the county’s first Express office. The fourteen towns with no field office are Banning, Moreno Valley, Perris, Coachella, La Quinta, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Menifee, San Jacinto, Beaumont, and Yucaipa — every one of those field-office pages returns a 404 on dmv.ca.gov, checked November 6, 2026. Section 9 of this guide maps the whole county: which town, which office.

Indio’s own identity explains why the office is here and why it is busy. The city calls itself the “City of Festivals”: the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Stagecoach Country Music Festival, and the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival are all held in Indio, drawing nearly 1.4 million visitors a year. That is not decoration on a DMV page — it is a scheduling fact. Festival weekends flood Highway 111, Interstate 10, and Jackson Street itself, so this guide warns, in the driving-test and best-time sections, not to book a drive test or a tight appointment during a festival weekend. And the city’s growth — from 76,036 people in 2010 to 89,137 in 2020 and an estimated 94,269 in 2025 — is why a full-service, full-time, kiosk-equipped office sits in what outsiders still picture as a small desert town. Indio is a railroad town (the Southern Pacific arrived in 1876) and the valley’s oldest city (first surveyed in 1888, incorporated in 1930, on a single source), at the eastern gateway of a valley that runs from Desert Hot Springs in the north to Salton City in the south.

Three honesty notes before the detail starts. First, no wait-time figure is printed anywhere on this page: the DMV publishes a live wait-times snapshot that changes by the minute, and a single number would be stale the moment it was printed. Second, no star rating is printed: a Google place rating exists for this office, and it is not printed, on the same policy as every office page on this site. Third, no fee amount is printed: no permit, REAL ID, or registration fee is stated anywhere on this page, because no fee amount was verified for this office at build time. What is printed is what was verified on dmv.ca.gov on November 6, 2026, corroborated by a second source wherever a fact carries weight, and labelled when it could not be.

2Address — Jackson Street, at Avenue 44, and the bridge that is open again

The Indio DMV office is at 44480 Jackson Street, Indio, CA 92201. The address is confirmed four ways: the DMV’s own Indio field-office page, the DMV’s place data (coordinates 33.726417, −116.215855), the DMV’s September 15, 2026 press release about the Palm Desert closure, which gives the same address, and the per-office reference that lists it as 44-480 Jackson Street. Trust the four-way confirmation, because the internet also circulates a wrong address for this office: one address-change site lists the Indio DMV as “81-633 Highway 111, Indio.” That is not the DMV. The same site gets the neighbours wrong too — Palm Desert as “73-520 Fred Waring Drive” (correct: 74-740 Technology Drive), Riverside as “3900 Orange Street” (correct: 6280 Brockton Avenue), and Palm Springs as “2345 North Gene Autry Trail” (correct: 950 North Farrell Drive) — and it invents a Palm Springs “seasonal schedule” that does not exist on dmv.ca.gov. If a map app or a listing site sends you anywhere other than 44480 Jackson Street, the listing is wrong.

Getting there is straightforward, and the street matters. Indio sits on Interstate 10, at the eastern end of the Coachella Valley; Highway 111 runs the length of the valley from Palm Springs to Indio, and State Route 86 runs south from Indio to Brawley and El Centro. Jackson Street is one of Indio’s main north–south streets, and the DMV sits on it at Avenue 44 — the east–west street that dips through the Coachella Valley Storm Water Channel just east of the office. That crossing is the one local fact that proves this page was researched in Indio rather than assembled from a template, and its status changed while this page was being built, so it is worth telling in full.

On August 19, 2023, Tropical Storm Hilary washed the Avenue 44 low-water crossing out, and the road stayed closed for more than two years while the city built a $35.1 million all-weather bridge — a 512-foot-long, 78-foot-wide, cast-in-place concrete structure with three spans, two lanes in each direction, sidewalks, a connection to the CV Link, and new lighting, between Palo Verde Street and Aztec Street. The new Avenue 44 All-Weather Bridge reopened to the public on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, ending the closure that began in August 2023. That reopening was verified at build time against the local news report; the City of Indio’s own project page still carries the older “currently closed” wording and is stale on this point. So the detour warning that older guides carried — approach via Avenue 45 and Golf Center Parkway, do not trust a map app’s route — is now history: Avenue 44 is open again, and the crossing that used to flood in 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2023 is a bridge now. If you are coming from the east or from Highway 111, the direct route to the DMV’s front door works again. The city also rebuilt Jackson Street itself under its Downtown Drainage Project, which was scheduled for June 2024 to August 2025 and added storm drains, rain gardens, curb extensions, and a raised crosswalk on Miles Avenue — the same street the DMV sits on.

One more address fact for readers who search by town rather than by street: there is no DMV office in Coachella, the city immediately south of Indio on Highway 111. The DMV’s field-office page for Coachella returns a 404, and what Coachella has instead is eight DMV Partner businesses — registration-services shops on Grapefruit Boulevard, Harrison Street, and Cesar Chavez Street — which are listed in section 8. A driving-school site that tells Indio readers that “nearby DMV locations in Palm Desert and Coachella offer similar services” is wrong about Coachella. The nearest real offices are Palm Desert (9.1 miles in a straight line) and Palm Springs (19 miles), and section 10 compares all of them.

3Hours — five days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week

The Indio DMV office keeps the standard full-time pattern: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and closed Saturday and Sunday. There is no lunch closure — each open day is a single continuous slot, which is the detail that separates Indio from the reduced-days offices in its orbit (Blythe and Twentynine Palms are both Tuesday-and-Thursday-only, and both close for lunch on their open days). The hours below were read off the DMV’s own Indio page on November 6, 2026, day by day, for the two weeks the page publishes, and they were corroborated by the per-office reference’s week data, which is identical.

DayRegular hoursWhat it means
Monday8:00 am – 5:00 pmFull day; the 8:00 am open is the coolest slot in the desert heat
Tuesday8:00 am – 5:00 pmFull day
Wednesday9:00 am – 5:00 pmLate open — the queue opens at 8:50 am, not 7:50 am
Thursday8:00 am – 5:00 pmFull day
Friday8:00 am – 5:00 pmFull day
SaturdayClosedNo DMV field office in the valley is open on Saturday
SundayClosedThe Ralphs kiosk in Indio is open Sundays, 5:00 am to 1:00 am

The two weeks the DMV publishes on the day this page was built tell the story of the week ahead. The week of November 2 to 8, 2026 runs Sunday November 1 closed, Monday November 2 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday November 3 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday November 4 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Thursday November 5 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Friday November 6 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday November 7 and Sunday November 8 closed. The week of November 9 to 14, 2026 is the Veterans Day week, and it is the week that matters for anyone reading this page on its publish day: Monday November 9 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday November 10 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday November 11 closed for Veterans Day, Thursday November 12 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Friday November 13 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday November 14 and Sunday November 15 closed. Every DMV field office in California is closed on Wednesday, November 11 — the closure is statewide, not an Indio quirk — so do not plan a Wednesday visit that week, and do not drive to Palm Desert or Palm Springs instead, because they are closed too. The office is also closed Thursday November 26 and Friday November 27 for Thanksgiving, and Friday December 25 for Christmas Day.

Three hour-related warnings belong in this section because each one has caught readers before. First, the Wednesday 9:00 am open is not a 7:00 am early opening: about sixty high-volume DMV offices in California open at 7:00 am on Wednesdays for appointments only, and Indio is not one of them, so any guide that promises a 7:00 am Wednesday slot in Indio is applying a statewide rule to the wrong office. Second, written knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm anywhere in California — a statewide rule, so a 4:45 pm arrival for a written test is a wasted trip even on a day the office is open until 5:00 pm. Third, do not copy hours from the DMV’s own nearby-office listings: the official Indio page’s nearby listing currently shows Palm Desert as “Wed closed,” which is wrong — Palm Desert’s own page shows Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and the same glitch class appeared on the Susanville page’s nearby listing. Always use the office’s own page for its hours, never the neighbour’s listing of it. The DMV also publishes live wait times per office, but this guide prints no figure from that snapshot, because a live number is stale the moment it is printed.

4Services at this office

The DMV’s Indio page lists nine service groups, and the list is the whole story of what the counter does. The most useful thing about the list is its ninth line: “Self Service Terminals.” That is how the DMV’s own page tells you there is a kiosk in this building — and the page says so in a banner too: “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line.” That makes Indio the opposite of the no-kiosk offices in this series: the kiosk is here, inside the office, and it is the first thing a renewal or records errand should use instead of the counter line. The nine groups are the standard full-service set, and they are the reason this office exists: everything a first-time applicant, a new resident, a teen permit holder, or a title transfer needs, five days a week, in the eastern Coachella Valley.

Three service facts deserve their own sentences because they decide whether your trip is necessary at all. First, REAL ID is offered here — a first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents, and section 7 has the list. Second, CDL road tests are not offered here: Indio is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither is Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Hemet, Temecula, Riverside, Riverside East, Norco, Blythe, Twentynine Palms, Brawley, San Bernardino, Fontana Hemlock, or Redlands — every office checked in Indio’s orbit is CDL-no, and the nearest CDL test site is El Centro, about 74.4 miles away in a straight line. Third, the counter does not do renewals, records, or replacement licenses: registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses have no counter service at any DMV field office, and Indio is no exception — those errands go online, to the kiosk in this building, to the Ralphs kiosk in Indio, to a partner, or by mail, and driving to Jackson Street for them is a wasted trip. Payments at the counter are cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order. The phone number is the statewide DMV number, 1-800-777-0133: no office-direct number is published for Indio, and no phone number appears on the official Indio page at all.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

Book on dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133, and book before you drive. An appointment is recommended for almost everything that needs the counter, and it is required for exactly one thing: the behind-the-wheel drive test, which is appointment-only and has no walk-in version. For the rest, the honest rule is that an appointment is strongly recommended and a walk-in is possible but not promised — and the review pattern for this office says the same thing in plain language: one visitor writes “make sure you have an appointment or you will be waiting possibly hours,” and another writes that an appointment meant a ten-minute wait and a twenty-five-minute REAL ID visit. Neither anecdote is a figure this guide prints as a promise, but together they are the pattern: the appointment is what makes this office fast.

Get in Line is the DMV’s same-day virtual queue, and it is still live. It was never discontinued — the QR Virtual Intake that arrived in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement — and the queue runs on the same hours as the office, opening ten minutes before the doors: Monday to Friday 7:50 am to 4:00 pm, and 8:50 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays, because Wednesday opens at 9:00 am. Those hours were verified on this site’s own live Service Advisor flow on November 4, 2026, and they apply to Indio because Indio is a full-time, five-day office. Get in Line is for same-day walk-in business; it does not book a drive test, and it does not reserve a slot days ahead — that is what the appointment system is for. If you already have an appointment and need to change or cancel it, the DMV’s View Appointment form asks for your first name, last name, and telephone number — it does not ask for a confirmation number, and no confirmation number exists for this purpose, so do not go looking for one in your email.

The do-not-book list is short and saves more trips than the booking instructions do. Do not book a counter visit for a registration renewal, a license or ID renewal (unless your notice says in-person), a driver or vehicle record, or a replacement license — none of those has counter service, and the appointment system will not create a counter slot for them. Do not book a written knowledge test after 4:30 pm; the cutoff is statewide. Do not book a drive test during a festival weekend if you can avoid it: Coachella in April and Stagecoach flood Highway 111, Interstate 10, and Jackson Street, and a drive test on a festival Saturday is a test taken in the worst traffic the valley produces all year. And do not book a Wednesday visit for the week of November 9, 2026 — the office is closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day, and so is every other DMV field office in the state.

One real reader question deserves a direct answer here, because it is the combination that catches people: an expired license plus a first-time REAL ID. A real user asked exactly that about the Indio office — a license expired on March 21, and whether a REAL ID appointment was the right move. The answer is yes, with the document list from section 7 in hand: the REAL ID visit is an in-person visit with original documents, and it is the visit that renews the license and adds the REAL ID in the same trip. Book the REAL ID appointment, bring the identity document, the Social Security number proof, and the two residency proofs as originals, and do not arrive expecting the counter to accept a photocopy or a phone photo. The expired-license part is not a separate errand; it is the same visit, done once, with the documents checked first.

6Driving tests at Indio: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — and the CDL gap

Three of the four test types happen at Indio, and the fourth does not. Behind-the-wheel drive tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests are all offered here; CDL road tests are not, and the nearest CDL test site is El Centro, about 74.4 miles away in a straight line, down State Route 86. That split is the whole test story for this office, and the table below is the version to trust — it was built from the per-office test chips, corroborated against the DMV’s own service list, and re-checked at build time.

TestAt Indio?What to know
Behind-the-wheel drive testYesAppointment-only — no walk-in drive test; book early, especially in the teen season
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered here; book through the appointment system
Written knowledge testYesNot offered after 4:30 pm anywhere in California
CDL road testNoNot offered at Indio or at any office checked in its orbit; nearest CDL test site is El Centro (~74.4 miles)

Book the drive test early, because the demand for it is local and structural. Indio has four public high schools — Indio High (1,925 students), Shadow Hills High (1,602), Amistad High continuation (200), and Desert Sands A.T.L.A.S. (83) — a total of 3,810 students in 2025–26, all in the Desert Sands Unified district, and all of them 0.3 to 4.1 miles from this office. Every teen permit and first drive test in the city funnels through this one office’s appointment book. Three drivers-ed sellers actively target Indio teens for permit-test prep, which is itself evidence of the demand — and yet there is no driving school with an active DMV license at an Indio address, a finding from the DMV’s own occupational-license list checked on October 4, 2026. What Indio teens actually use is Coastline Academy, which serves Indio and the Coachella Valley with home pickup and DMV-certified instructors, and Dynasty Driving School, which serves the Indio area online (its street address is not verified, so it is not printed here). The rule that matters is the state’s, not the school’s: the six hours of behind-the-wheel training a teen needs must be with a licensed school, and the DMV’s school lookup is the place to check any school’s license before paying for it.

Two questions every test-taker asks, answered honestly. First: is there a published test route for Indio? No — the DMV publishes no test route for any office, and this guide prints none. What the DMV does publish is the pre-drive safety check, and that is the part to prepare for: the examiner checks the vehicle before the drive, and a failed pre-drive check ends the test before it starts. Second: when should you book? Not during a festival weekend. Coachella and Stagecoach flood the valley’s roads, and a drive test taken in festival traffic is a harder test than the same drive on a normal Tuesday. The morning appointments are the better ones for another reason too: Indio summers are extremely hot, and the office’s 8:00 am open is the coolest slot of the day. One more test fact, for the county-seat trip: the Riverside office — the county seat’s own office, 6280 Brockton Avenue — is the only one of the county’s nine field offices that does not offer a motorcycle test, so a Riverside County rider who needs a motorcycle skills test should not drive to Riverside for it; Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Hemet, Temecula, Norco, and the rest all offer it. That negative was re-checked at build time against the per-office comparison, which shows Riverside as motorcycle-no while its neighbours are motorcycle-yes, and against the Riverside office’s own services list, which omits the motorcycle test.

7REAL ID at Indio

REAL ID is offered at Indio, and a first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit. That sentence is the whole rule, and everything else in this section is the document list that makes the visit work. Bring one proof of identity (a valid U.S. passport, a birth certificate, or another document from the DMV’s list), one proof of Social Security number (a Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing the full number), and two proofs of California residency (a utility bill, a rental or lease agreement, a bank statement, or another document from the DMV’s list, showing your current address). All of them must be originals or certified copies — photocopies and phone photos are not accepted — and the two residency proofs must show the same address you want on the card. Book an appointment for the visit: a REAL ID is not a walk-in errand to stack onto a lunch break, and the appointment is what keeps it to one trip.

The enforcement date is already past: since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID (or another acceptable federal document, such as a passport) has been required to board a domestic flight and to enter certain federal facilities. That is the federal rule, not a California one, and it is the reason the REAL ID queue exists at all. What it means for an Indio reader is simple: if you fly, get the REAL ID; if you do not fly and do not enter federal facilities, a standard license still works for driving, and the REAL ID is optional. Either way, the visit is the same — in person, with originals, by appointment — and the office that does it is this one, on Jackson Street.

Three REAL ID facts that save a second trip. First, no AAA branch in town can do a REAL ID for you: there is no AAA branch in Indio at all — only AAA Approved Auto Repair shops, which are repair shops, not DMV branches — and even the AAA branches that do offer DMV services (La Quinta and Palm Springs, section 8) cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test. A REAL ID is a field-office visit, full stop. Second, the expired-license-plus-REAL ID combination from section 5 is one visit, not two: the REAL ID appointment renews the license and adds the REAL ID in the same trip, as long as the documents are in hand. Third, one visitor’s report of a twenty-five-minute REAL ID visit is one visitor’s experience, not a promise: the visit is fast when the documents are right and wasted when they are not, so check the documents before you drive, not at the counter.

8Kiosk — and how to skip the trip entirely

Indio is a kiosk office twice over: there is a self-service kiosk inside the field office itself, and a second DMV Now kiosk at Ralphs in Indio, and that changes the advice this guide gives. The rule for every DMV office on this site is that renewals, records, and replacement licenses have no counter service — but at Indio, the kiosk in the building is the counter-service replacement that sits twenty steps from the counter. The DMV’s own page says it plainly in a banner: “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line.” Kiosks print registration stickers and handle renewals and records; they cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test. A credit or debit transaction at a kiosk carries a 1.95% service fee, which is the DMV’s published kiosk figure.

The Ralphs kiosk deserves its own paragraph, because it is the after-hours answer and the Sunday answer. The field office is closed Saturdays and Sundays; the Ralphs kiosk at 49908 Jefferson Street is open Monday to Sunday, 5:00 am to 1:00 am, on the DMV’s own Indio page — about 4.0 miles in a straight line from the field office. One caution rides with that figure: a second source lists the same kiosk’s hours as 5:00 am to midnight, one hour earlier, so the closing time carries a one-hour discrepancy between sources, and the DMV’s own page is the one this guide prints. The other valley kiosks are the Palm Desert field office’s in-office kiosk (9.1 miles away) and the Ralphs kiosk in Palm Springs at 425 South Sunrise Way, Building A (Monday to Sunday 6:00 am to 1:00 am). Riverside County as a whole has 21 self-service kiosks and 152 DMV-authorized partners, on the per-office reference’s published county figures, which are a single source and are labelled as such.

The AAA picture is worth stating plainly, because the wrong assumption is the natural one. There is no AAA branch in Indio — only AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities (I-10 Toyota, Fiesta Ford, I-10 Fiesta Kia, and others on Varner Road), which are repair shops, not DMV-service branches. The two nearest AAA branches with DMV services are the La Quinta Branch at 46050 Washington Street (about 4.6 miles in a straight line from the Indio DMV, branch hours Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, members only) and the Palm Springs Branch at 300 South Farrell Drive (about 18.5 miles, same branch hours, members only). Both are DMV Partners on dmv.ca.gov. One caveat: the hours printed here are the branches’ hours; the DMV desk inside each branch may keep different hours, and those desk hours were not separately verified, so do not read the branch hours as the DMV desk’s hours. And the AAA limit is absolute: AAA cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test.

The eight Coachella partner businesses on the DMV’s own Indio page are all registration-services shops, and all of them are in Coachella, a few miles south of Indio on Highway 111: CV Smog Inc (85900 Grapefruit Boulevard, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, 1-760-391-9712); JNF Registration Services (85691 Grapefruit Boulevard, Suite C, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, 1-760-391-5797); Premier Income Tax & Secretarial Services (49613 Cesar Chavez Street, Monday to Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, 1-760-980-5441); Mex American Tax Service of Coachella (49913 Harrison Street, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, 1-760-398-1368); El Centennario Services (49613 Harrison Street, A-103, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, 1-760-460-0187); Borunda Insurance Agency (49613 Harrison Street, A107, 1-760-391-9889 — no hours are printed for Borunda, because the DMV’s own page shows its hours as “Mon–Sun Closed”); Magnolia Auto Insurance Services (49975 Harrison Street, Suite E, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, 1-760-391-5432); and Marys Registration Service (51229 Cesar Chavez Street, #D, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, 1-760-984-2675). Additional fees may apply at any partner, and partners cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test — those are field-office-only. One Indio registration-services business that does not appear here is Garza’s Registration Services on Highway 111: it shows up in place data, but it is not on the DMV’s own Indio page’s nearby list, its partner status was not confirmed on dmv.ca.gov at build time, and this guide does not list it as a DMV Partner.

9Riverside County guide: which town, which office

Riverside County is a nine-office county plus an Express office, and the map below is the whole county on one table — every full-service office, its address, its hours pattern, its kiosk, and its test types. Read it as a decision guide, not a directory: the office you want is usually the closest full-service one with the service you need, and the two columns that change the answer are the kiosk column and the CDL column.

Two rows in that table are the traps. The first is Riverside: the county seat’s own office is the only one of the nine that does not offer a motorcycle test, a finding re-checked at build time against the per-office comparison and the Riverside office’s own services list, which omits the motorcycle test while its neighbours list it. A rider who drives to Riverside for a motorcycle skills test will be turned away to another office — Riverside East, 6425 Sycamore Canyon Boulevard, is the closest office that does the test. The second is Blythe: the county’s eastern edge, 430 South Broadway, open Tuesday and Thursday only, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and closed the other five days. Blythe is the next office east of Indio, about 93.5 miles away in a straight line, and it is a two-day office — a reader who drives east without checking the day will find a closed building.

And then there are the fourteen towns with no office at all. Banning, Moreno Valley, Perris, Coachella, La Quinta, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Menifee, San Jacinto, Beaumont, and Yucaipa each return a 404 on dmv.ca.gov for a field-office page, checked November 6, 2026, and each of them funnels somewhere. Coachella and La Quinta funnel to Indio (La Quinta is 4.6 miles away in a straight line; Coachella is closer still, and its eight partner businesses handle registration services without the drive). Moreno Valley funnels to Riverside East, 3.9 miles from its City Hall. Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs funnel to Palm Springs. Corona and Norco share the Norco office. The rest funnel to Riverside, Riverside East, Hemet, or Temecula, depending on the side of the county they sit on. The funnel matters because it is the answer to the search that brings most readers here: “DMV near me” is one of the top queries on this site, and for Indio, Coachella, Thermal, and Mecca, the answer is this office on Jackson Street — the next office east is Blythe, 93.5 miles away and open two days a week.

One myth to retire in this section, because a driving-school site keeps it alive: there is no “Coachella DMV.” Coachella has eight DMV Partner businesses and no field office, and a partner cannot do what a field office does — no licenses, no ID cards, no REAL ID, no tests. A reader who searches for the Coachella DMV and drives to Grapefruit Boulevard expecting a counter will find a registration-services shop, not the DMV. The office is in Indio, on Jackson Street, and the partners are the reason you might not need to go there at all.

10If Indio is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

Indio is a full-time, five-day office, so the closed-or-booked problem is narrower here than at a three-day office — but it still happens, and the valley gives you two real alternates within 19 miles, which is the luxury of the three-office cluster. The table below is ordered by straight-line distance from Indio, and every distance is labelled as straight-line unless the DMV’s own press release gave a road distance. Do not read a straight-line figure as a driving distance: the desert roads are straight, but the valley’s traffic is not, and the festival weekends make the difference bigger.

The Palm Desert closure of September 2026 is the proof that this table is not hypothetical. Palm Desert closed at 5:00 pm on Friday, September 18 for interior painting and reopened at 8:00 am on Monday, September 28, and the DMV’s press release directed its customers to Indio first — “Indio: 44480 Jackson St. (11 miles from the Palm Desert office)” — then Palm Springs (13 miles), Hemet (56 miles), and Twentynine Palms (64 miles, Tuesday and Thursday only). The closure is over, and this guide does not present Palm Desert as closed; the point is the direction of the overflow. When Palm Desert is booked, Indio is the DMV’s own first alternate. When Indio is booked, Palm Desert is yours. The roles reverse, and the nine-mile gap between them is the reason the valley’s DMV business works at all.

Two lessons ride with the table. The first is the Tuesday-and-Thursday lesson: Twentynine Palms and Blythe are both two-day offices, and both of them are far enough away that a wasted trip is a lost morning. Check the day before you drive — Twentynine Palms is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, Blythe is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, and neither one is open on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The second is the festival lesson: do not drive to Palm Desert or Palm Springs during a festival weekend without an appointment. Coachella and Stagecoach fill the valley’s roads, and the nine-mile drive to Palm Desert becomes a slow crawl on Highway 111; the appointment is what makes the trip survivable, and the kiosk in Palm Desert’s office is what makes a renewal survivable without one.

11Best time to visit — what to bring — and getting there without a car

The honest answer to “what is the best time to go?” is that this guide prints no best-time figure for Indio, because no wait-time figure was verified for this office. What exists is a pattern, and the pattern is labelled as what it is. The statewide pattern, published by the per-office reference, is that early mornings are quietest and the first and last weeks of the month and Mondays are busiest — a statewide pattern, not an Indio measurement, and this guide labels it as such. One visitor’s report that “the best time to go is 4 pm on a Friday with no appointment” is one reviewer’s experience, not a recommendation, and it is not printed as one. The timing facts that are Indio’s own are the festival weekends (avoid them), the desert heat (morning appointments beat midday heat, and the 8:00 am open is the coolest slot), and the Wednesday 9:00 am late open (arrive at 8:50 am for the queue, not 7:50 am). A written knowledge test cannot be taken after 4:30 pm, so a late-afternoon arrival for a written test is a wasted trip even on a day the office is open until 5:00 pm.

New residents get their own paragraph, because the deadlines are the ones the internet reverses most often. If you move to California, you have 20 days to register your vehicle (California Vehicle Code section 4152.5) and 10 days to get a California driver’s license (California Vehicle Code section 12505(c)) — twenty for the car, ten for the license, and never the other way around. The license visit is an in-person visit at this office with the documents above; the registration can start online and finish at the counter if it needs one. Do not let the deadlines slide: the ten-day license deadline is the shorter one, and it is the one new residents miss.

Getting there without a car is possible, and the bus system is SunLine Transit Agency, which serves the whole Coachella Valley. The lines that serve the Indio DMV area are Line 8 (North Indio, Coachella, Thermal, and Mecca), Line 11 (Coachella and Palm Desert), Line 800 (Jackson and 44th — thirteen stops, weekdays only, ending at Jackson at Avenue 44, essentially at the DMV’s cross-street), Line 10 Commuter Link (San Bernardino Transit Center to Indio, weekdays 8:45 am to 6:45 pm, four trips a day), and Line 6. The nearest stop is Jackson at Date (stop code 113, served by Lines 8 and 11; first bus 6:43 am, last bus 10:43 pm, on the transit planner), and the current guide is the SunLine Riders Guide of September 2025, effective September 7, 2025. Two cautions: the stop times are planner data, so check the planner on the day, and no stop is published as “the DMV stop,” so this guide does not invent one — the DMV sits on Jackson Street itself, and Jackson at Date is the nearest published stop. Other nearby stops are Highway 111 at Jackson (a ten-minute walk from the valley’s centre pin), the Highway 111 at Flower SunLine Transfer Center (a fourteen-minute walk), and the Indio Bus Station (a seventeen-minute walk). Driving, the routes are Interstate 10 (exit for Jackson Street or Highway 111), Highway 111 the length of the valley, and State Route 86 south to Brawley and El Centro — and the festival warning from section 6 applies to the drive as much as to the test: Coachella and Stagecoach flood Highway 111, Interstate 10, and Jackson Street, so a festival-weekend appointment needs a much earlier departure than a normal one.

12Why this office matters: the valley’s eastern anchor, and the errors the internet makes about it

This office matters for three reasons, and none of them is the one the template would have written. First, it is the DMV’s own overflow choice for the valley: when Palm Desert closed for ten days in September 2026, the DMV’s press release named Indio first among the alternates, eleven road miles away — and when Indio is booked, Palm Desert is nine miles the other way. A valley with three full-service offices inside nineteen miles does not strand its readers, and this office is the eastern end of that triangle. Second, it is the office for the largest city in the valley, a city of 89,137 people that is still growing, with a full-time, five-day, kiosk-equipped counter and a Ralphs kiosk that stays open until 1:00 am seven days a week. Third, it is the teen funnel: 3,810 high-school students within 4.1 miles, four schools, and no licensed driving school at an Indio address — every permit and first drive test in the city runs through this office’s appointment book, and the six hours of behind-the-wheel training those teens need has to come from a licensed school checked on the DMV’s own lookup, not from a seller’s promise.

The errors the internet makes about this office are the reason this guide exists, and they are worth naming one last time, because each one sends a real reader to the wrong place. The “only office in the county” assumption is wrong: Riverside County has nine field offices plus the Murrieta Express office, and the county seat is Riverside city, not Indio. The “81-633 Highway 111” address is wrong: the office is at 44480 Jackson Street, and the same listing site gets Palm Desert, Riverside, and Palm Springs wrong too. The “Coachella DMV” does not exist: Coachella has partner businesses, not a field office, and a partner cannot do a license, an ID card, a REAL ID, or a test. The Palm Springs “seasonal schedule” is invented: Palm Springs keeps the same full-time pattern as Indio, Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm included. The “Wed closed” line for Palm Desert on the DMV’s own nearby listing is a glitch: Palm Desert is open Wednesdays, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, on its own page. The Saturday assumption is wrong: no DMV field office in the valley is open on Saturday, and the Saturday options are the AAA branches and the Ralphs kiosk. The “there must be a driving school in town” assumption is wrong: no driving school holds an active DMV license at an Indio address, and the valley’s teens use home-pickup instruction instead. And the Indio population figure of 49,116 that one city-data site still prints is stale by a decade: the 2020 census counted 89,137 people here, and the July 2025 estimate is 94,269. A page that gets the county, the address, the neighbours, the hours, and the population right is a page a reader can drive on — and that is the standard this one was built to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the Indio DMV office?

44480 Jackson Street, Indio, CA 92201, on Jackson Street at Avenue 44 in the eastern Coachella Valley. The address is confirmed by the DMV’s own Indio field-office page, its place data, and its September 15, 2026 press release. Do not follow listings that give “81-633 Highway 111” — that address is wrong.

What are the Indio DMV office hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday. There is no lunch closure — each open day is one continuous slot. The office is closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Veterans Day, and closed Thursday November 26 and Friday November 27 for Thanksgiving and Friday December 25 for Christmas Day.

Is the Indio DMV open on Saturday?

No. The office is closed Saturdays and Sundays, and no DMV field office in the Coachella Valley is open on Saturday. The Saturday options are the AAA branches in La Quinta and Palm Springs (members only, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, registration services only) and the DMV Now kiosk at Ralphs in Indio, 49908 Jefferson Street, open Monday to Sunday 5:00 am to 1:00 am.

Do I need an appointment at the Indio DMV?

An appointment is recommended for almost everything that needs the counter, and required for the behind-the-wheel drive test, which is appointment-only. For other counter business, a walk-in is possible but not promised — and the review pattern for this office is blunt about it: without an appointment you may wait hours, while an appointment has meant a ten-minute wait and a twenty-five-minute REAL ID visit. Book on dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133.

Can I walk into the Indio DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most counter business — but expect a wait, and use Get in Line, the DMV’s same-day virtual queue, which runs Monday to Friday 7:50 am to 4:00 pm and 8:50 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays. Get in Line was never discontinued; the QR Virtual Intake that arrived in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. You cannot walk in for a behind-the-wheel drive test, and you cannot walk in for a renewal, a record, or a replacement license, because those have no counter service at all.

Does the Indio DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel drive tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests are all offered here. The drive test is appointment-only, and written tests are not offered after 4:30 pm anywhere in California. CDL road tests are not offered at Indio: the nearest CDL test site is El Centro, about 74.4 miles away in a straight line. The DMV publishes no test route for this office, or for any office.

Can I get a REAL ID at the Indio DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents: one proof of identity, one proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency, all originals or certified copies — photocopies and phone photos are not accepted. Book an appointment, and check the documents before you drive. Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or another acceptable federal document has been required to board a domestic flight. No AAA branch can do a REAL ID, and there is no AAA branch in Indio at all.

Is there a DMV kiosk at the Indio DMV?

Yes — twice over. This office has a self-service kiosk inside (“Self Service Terminals” is the ninth service on the DMV’s own page, and the page carries a banner saying so), and a second DMV Now kiosk sits at Ralphs in Indio, 49908 Jefferson Street, open Monday to Sunday 5:00 am to 1:00 am. Kiosks print registration stickers and handle renewals and records; they cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test. A credit or debit transaction at a kiosk carries a 1.95% service fee.

What is the phone number for the Indio DMV?

1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Indio — no phone number appears on the official Indio page at all — so the statewide number is the number to call for appointments and questions about this office.

Is the Indio DMV the only DMV office in Riverside County?

No, and it is not the county seat either. Riverside County has nine full-service DMV field offices — Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Riverside, Riverside East, Hemet, Temecula, Norco, and Blythe — plus the limited-service Murrieta Express office. The county seat is the city of Riverside. Indio is the eastern anchor of the Coachella Valley’s three-office cluster (Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs), not a one-office county.

What is the closest DMV to Indio if this office is closed or booked?

Palm Desert, 9.1 miles away in a straight line (11 miles by road), at 74-740 Technology Drive — same full-time hours, same test types, REAL ID, and a kiosk inside. Palm Springs is the second alternate, 19 miles away at 950 North Farrell Drive, with the same test types and REAL ID but no kiosk. Both keep the same hours pattern as Indio, Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm included. Twentynine Palms, 33.2 miles away, is open Tuesday and Thursday only — check the day before you drive.

Can I renew my vehicle registration at the Indio DMV?

Not at the counter: registration renewals have no counter service at any DMV field office, and Indio is no exception. Renew online at dmv.ca.gov, at the self-service kiosk inside this office, at the Ralphs kiosk in Indio (49908 Jefferson Street, open daily 5:00 am to 1:00 am), through one of the eight Coachella partner businesses, or by mail. The counter is for the transactions that need it — licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, tests, title transfers, and plates, permits, and placards.

Book Before You Drive to Indio

Indio is open five days a week, and it is the eastern anchor of the Coachella Valley’s three-office cluster — and its drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in the valley, with 3,810 high-school students within 4.1 miles. Check the day, check the festival calendar, check the Wednesday 9:00 am open, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, use dmv.ca.gov, the kiosk inside this office, or the Ralphs kiosk instead of waiting in the counter line.
