TL;DR

  • Sacramento South is a real DMV field office at 7775 La Mancha Way, Sacramento, CA 95823 — verified on its own dmv.ca.gov office page on November 6, 2026. It is the southernmost full-service field office in Sacramento proper and the closest full office to Elk Grove.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday closed. Closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day). Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 p.m.
  • It has a self-serve kiosk on site and lists nine services: Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates, Permits & Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, Request miscellaneous original documents, and Self Service Terminals. Payments accepted: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order.
  • Do not drive here for a simple renewal or a replacement licence. The DMV provides no counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s licence or ID card renewal (unless your notice says otherwise), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licences — those go online, to a kiosk, to a business partner, or by mail.
  • Appointments are the way in for the visits that need a person at a window — first REAL ID, original licences and permits, and behind-the-wheel drive tests. Drive tests always need a scheduled Drive Test Appointment. Get in Line is the same-day option where available. To move an appointment you cancel it and book a new one; viewing or cancelling uses your first name, last name and telephone number — no confirmation number is needed.
  • Elk Grove has no field office — Sacramento South is where Elk Grove residents go. If its calendar is full, the first backup is Sacramento (Broadway) at 4700 Broadway, then Carmichael, then Folsom or Lodi.
  • Do not mistake three nearby sites for this office: the Sacramento-Florin Industry Business Center (7226 Florin Mall Dr) serves industry partners, the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center (2528 Evergreen Ave) is commercial testing only, and DMV Headquarters (2415 1st Ave) is an administrative building, not a public counter.
  • For registration paperwork only, kiosks and partners can save you the trip — the Foods Co and Safeway kiosks around south Sacramento and the DMV business partners on Mack Road, Quinta Court and Florin Road handle registration services. They cannot issue a licence, a REAL ID, or a drive test.

1. Sacramento South DMV at a Glance: Address, Hours, Services & Payments

Sacramento South is a full-service California DMV field office — not a kiosk, not a partner shop, and not an industry centre. Its own page on dmv.ca.gov, read live on November 6, 2026, lists it as a “DMV Field Office” with a kiosk available on site. Everything in this section comes from that page, and from the office’s own calendar for the weeks of November 1–7 and November 8–14, 2026.

FactWhat dmv.ca.gov says

KioskYes, on site — “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line.”
PaymentsCash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order

The address is confirmed on two dmv.ca.gov surfaces: the office’s own page and the nearby-location card on the Sacramento (Broadway) office page, which prints “7775 La Mancha Way, Sacramento, CA 95823” with a “Kiosk Available” badge. Every source checked for this guide — official, aggregator, and driving-school pages alike — agrees on this address. That matters because the address is the one fact about this office that the internet gets right; the errors are in the hours, the Saturday question, and the lookalike sites covered in sections 2, 6 and 12.

The office sits in the 95823 ZIP on Sacramento’s southern edge, on the Elk Grove side of the city. It is the closest full DMV office to Elk Grove — about 3.8 miles in a straight line from the Safeway kiosk in Elk Grove, and about a 10–20 minute drive from central Elk Grove in normal traffic (a planning estimate, not a measured drive). Straight-line distances in this guide are computed from the offices’ dmv.ca.gov coordinates; road times are “about” estimates for normal traffic, never turn-by-turn routes, and peak-hour traffic on I-5 and SR-99 can lengthen them.

The nine services, and what each one means for you

The office’s own page lists nine services. The list is the same at every full-service field office in the Sacramento area, which is why the choice between offices is about distance and calendar, not about what the counter can do:

Service (as dmv.ca.gov lists it)What it covers at this office
Licensing ServicesDriver’s licence and ID card transactions that need an in-person visit: original licences, first-time REAL ID, permits.
TestingKnowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests. Drive tests need a scheduled Drive Test Appointment; knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 p.m.
Title TransfersTransferring a vehicle title into your name — private-party sale, family transfer, inheritance paperwork.
RegistrationIn-person registration transactions that cannot be done online, at a kiosk, or through a partner — for example VIN-verification cases and complex transfers. Simple registration renewal is not a counter service (see section 3).
Plates, Permits, & PlacardsLicence plates, permits, and disabled-person placards.
Replace Lost/Stolen/DamagedReplacement of a lost, stolen or damaged licence or ID. The office lists the service, but the DMV’s appointment page says replacement driver’s licences are not counter service — check your notice or online account first before driving here for one.
RecordsDriver and vehicle record requests at the counter (also available online and at kiosks).
Request miscellaneous original documentsThe portal’s catch-all label for original-document requests.
Self Service TerminalsThe on-site kiosk — see section 7 for what it can and cannot do.

Two honest limits belong with this list. First, the DMV’s scheduler itemises test types only at booking time, so this guide does not assert which test types — motorcycle or commercial — this office offers; do not assume a test type is available here until the scheduler shows it. Second, no fee figure appears anywhere on this page. Fees change, and several of the figures circulating for this office are stale; the DMV’s own fee schedule is the authority, and the appointment page tells you the fee before you pay. If a page quotes you a licence or registration fee for Sacramento South, check it against dmv.ca.gov before you trust it.

Before you drive here, check one thing: whether your task is a counter service at all. Section 3 opens with the DMV’s own sentence on that point, and it is the single most useful paragraph on this page — it saves readers the most common wasted trip to this office.

2. Hours in Full: the Wednesday Trap, Veterans Day, and a Card Quirk

The recurring weekly pattern at Sacramento South is simple — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday; closed Saturday and Sunday. It was read off the office’s own calendar for two consecutive weeks (November 1–7 and November 8–14, 2026), and the same pattern shows on the calendars of Sacramento (Broadway), Carmichael, Lodi and Folsom. Three details around those hours catch people out.

Wednesday opens at 9 a.m., not 8 a.m.

Every normal week, Sacramento South opens one hour late on Wednesday. A reader who arrives at 8 a.m. on a Wednesday waits an hour outside a closed office. The same Wednesday rule applies at every full office in the comparison table in section 5, so switching offices does not dodge it — the only fix is to arrive at 9 a.m. or later on Wednesdays. Several third-party pages get this wrong by printing “8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday” with no Wednesday exception at all; the office’s own calendar is the authority, and it prints 9 a.m. every Wednesday.

Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed — Veterans Day

The office’s calendar for the week of November 8–14 shows Wednesday, November 11 as closed, and the same closure shows on the Sacramento, Carmichael, Lodi and Folsom calendars read the same day. November 11 is Veterans Day, a state holiday, and all DMV field offices are closed for it. Do not plan a Wednesday visit for that week; Thursday, November 12 is the next open day, at the normal 8 a.m. opening. This guide does not state Thanksgiving-week hours, because the calendars read on November 6 run only two weeks out and show no Thanksgiving closure — check the DMV’s holiday calendar before any holiday-week visit rather than trusting a page that guesses.

The “Wed closed” card quirk — do not copy it

There is a rendering quirk on dmv.ca.gov itself that a future editor could easily mistake for a fact. The nearby-location cards — the “nearby offices” lists on every Sacramento-area office page — render Wednesday as “Wed closed — closed”, including for offices whose own calendars plainly show Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. That card line is a template quirk, not a closure. The same quirk appears on the Sacramento-Florin IBC cards. This page uses the office’s own calendar for every hour it prints, and you should too: if a page you are reading says Sacramento South is closed on Wednesdays, it copied a card, not a calendar.

Two more clock rules that shape your visit

Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 p.m. — an official rule from the DMV’s REAL ID pages. If you are coming for a written test, arrive with enough time to start it before 4:30 p.m.; a 4:45 p.m. arrival for a knowledge test is a wasted trip. And the office’s live wait-time widget is not a planning tool for a future visit: it shows the current wait at the moment you look, and outside office hours it reads “Closed”. This page prints no wait-time minutes, because no minute figure stays true from one day to the next. The DMV publishes a statewide current-wait-times page you can check live on the day you travel — our DMV wait-times guide explains how to read it — and its numbers are for that moment only.

3. Do You Need an Appointment at Sacramento South?

Appointments are the way in for the visits that need a person at a window, and the DMV’s own appointment page draws the line that matters most. Read live on November 6, 2026, it says:

“DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license/ID card renewal (unless specified on notice), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. These services must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” — dmv.ca.gov, Make an Appointment

That sentence is the spine of this section. If your task is a simple registration renewal, a licence or ID renewal, a record request, or a replacement driver’s licence, there is no counter service for it at Sacramento South — do not book an appointment and do not drive here for it. Use the online services, the on-site kiosk, one of the partners in section 8, or mail. Book an appointment only for the visits that truly require a person at a window: a first REAL ID, an original licence or permit, a behind-the-wheel drive test, and other transactions the DMV flags for in-office handling. Our statewide guide at California DMV Appointment covers the full booking process.

Two appointment types — do not mix them up

Book online at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment, or by phone at 1-800-777-0133 (the automated line runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week). There are two separate appointment types: a Field Office Appointment for licence, REAL ID and registration services, and a separate Drive Test Appointment for behind-the-wheel exams. Booking the wrong type is the most common appointment mistake after booking for a non-counter service. For driver’s licence and ID transactions, appointment slots only open after you submit the online application — complete the application first, then return to book.

Drive tests always need an appointment

There is no walk-in path for a behind-the-wheel test at Sacramento South or anywhere else: a drive test is booked as a Drive Test Appointment, in advance, through the same system. Tests happen at the field office only — not at kiosks, not at partners, and not at the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center for standard tests (that site is commercial testing only; see section 6). What the test itself involves is covered in section 4 and in our driving test appointment guide.

Get in Line is the same-day option

Get in Line is the DMV’s same-day electronic check-in: you join an office’s non-appointment queue from your phone for that day when you did not book ahead. It is separate from a scheduled appointment, which you book for a future date and time. Availability varies by office, so this page does not promise that Get in Line is running at Sacramento South on any given day — check the office’s Get in Line status on the day you travel. Our Get in Line guide gives the queue hours (7:50 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday 8:50 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. — the queue opens ten minutes before the office does) and the QR check-in steps.

Moving an appointment: cancel, then rebook

There is no reschedule button. To move an appointment you cancel the old one and book a new time — two steps, not one. The View/Cancel page asks for your first name, last name and telephone number. It does not ask for a confirmation number, and you do not need one to view or cancel an appointment — any page that tells you to find your confirmation number first is repeating an error that is already documented on this site. Appointment holders are served first, but an appointment is not a promise of zero waiting at the window; arrive with the documents in section 11 ready so the visit itself is short.

What this page will not claim: that walk-ins are welcome as a blanket policy, that same-day slots are available, or that any fixed advance-booking window applies. The DMV’s position is that appointments are recommended, Get in Line is the same-day path, and drive tests always need an appointment. Anything beyond that is a claim about a specific day, and the only honest source for it is the scheduler on that day.

4. Drive Tests, REAL ID & Knowledge Tests at Sacramento South

“Testing” is one of the nine services on Sacramento South’s own page, so this office is a real test site — for the standard behind-the-wheel test, for knowledge tests, and for the licence and permit work that surrounds them. A West Sacramento driving-school guide lists Sacramento South as one of the two offices West Sacramento teens use, which is corroboration from outside the DMV that this office serves a wider area than south Sacramento alone.

Behind-the-wheel drive tests

Book a Drive Test Appointment — separate from a Field Office Appointment — before you come. The standard test-day requirements apply: a car with valid registration and insurance, working signals, brake lights and horn, and a licensed driver to drive you there. The test itself covers the ordinary examiner-tested skills — lane changes, signal timing, residential speed control, smooth stops, pedestrian awareness — and the full test-day checklist lives on our driving test appointment guide rather than being duplicated here. Two things this guide will not do: it will not publish examiner routes for Sacramento South, because no verified route exists for this office and routes change; and it will not assert which test types this office offers beyond the standard test, because the scheduler itemises test types only at booking time.

REAL ID — first time means an office visit

A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person field-office visit with original documents — kiosks and partners cannot issue one. Sacramento South is a full-service office, so it handles first-time REAL ID under its Licensing Services. Bring proof of identity (for example a valid passport or birth certificate), proof of a Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (for example a utility bill and a bank statement), and use the DMV’s interactive REAL ID document checklist to gather them before the visit. A REAL ID is a driver’s licence or ID card marked with a golden bear and a star; it is needed to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities. REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. Our REAL ID appointment guide covers the documents in full, and our documents checklist is the packing list to print before you go.

Knowledge (written) tests

Knowledge tests are offered here under “Testing”. They are multiple-choice tests, and they are not given after 4:30 p.m. — the official rule quoted in section 2. For a permit, a minor brings a drivers-education certificate and a parent or guardian to sign; the permit process in full is on our driving-test guide. One figure this page deliberately does not print: the number of questions on the permit test and the passing score. A single third-party driving-school page states them, but no dmv.ca.gov page read for this guide confirms them, so they are not printed here as verified fact.

5. Nearby DMV Offices Compared: Broadway First, Then Carmichael, Folsom & Lodi

Every full office in the Sacramento area lists the same nine services, the same six payment methods, the same hours pattern, and a kiosk on site. So the choice between them is not about what the counter can do — it is about distance and whose calendar has a slot. Each office below was verified on its own dmv.ca.gov field-office page on November 6, 2026. Distances are straight-line from Sacramento South, computed from the offices’ dmv.ca.gov coordinates; road times are “about” planning estimates for normal traffic.

The Wednesday 9:00 a.m. opening applies at every office in the table, and Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed at all of them — calendar-verified on November 6. A note on the Lodi address: dmv.ca.gov prints “1222 Pixley Parkway” on its locations listing and “1222 Pixley Pkwy” in its place data; the ZIP is 95240 on dmv.ca.gov, while some Lodi partners use 95242 — do not transfer a partner’s ZIP onto the office. And a note on Folsom: its address, hours pattern and kiosk badge are verified from the Carmichael page’s nearby card and from Folsom’s own page, whose services block was re-read at build time and lists the same nine services as its siblings.

Sacramento (Broadway) — the closest alternative

The Broadway office at 4700 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95820 is about 5.0 miles in a straight line from Sacramento South and about 15 minutes by road in normal traffic. It lists the same nine services, the same six payment methods, and a kiosk on site, and its own page also carries an “Interpreter Services” note that Sacramento South’s page does not show. It is the first backup when Sacramento South’s calendar is full, and the natural office for central and north Sacramento and for West Sacramento residents. Our live guide at Sacramento DMV (Broadway) covers it in full. One correction worth carrying: a third-party phone guide prints a Sacramento office address of “7723 Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95826”. That is not a DMV field office address on dmv.ca.gov — the correct address is 4700 Broadway, 95820.

Carmichael — the northeast alternative

Carmichael, at 5209 North Ave, Carmichael, CA 95608, is about 11.2 miles straight-line from Sacramento South and about 25–30 minutes by road. Same nine services, same hours, kiosk on site. It is the backup to check when both Sacramento offices are booked out, and the office to try if you are already heading northeast toward Arden-Arcade and Carmichael.

Folsom — farther northeast, only if you are already that way

Folsom, at 323 E Bidwell A, Folsom, CA 95630, is about 19.5 miles straight-line and about 30–40 minutes northeast. Same hours pattern, kiosk badge on site. It is a farther alternative, not a first choice — but if you are already in Folsom, its AAA branch (2796 E Bidwell St, 1-916-351-2600, Monday–Friday 9–6, Saturday 9–5, member use only) is a partner option for registration work. One over-claim to ignore: a third-party Folsom page lists “motorcycle test” and “CDL test” as Folsom services. Those do not appear in dmv.ca.gov’s nine-service list for any office read for this guide — test types are itemised by the scheduler at booking time only.

Lodi — the south fallback

Lodi, at 1222 Pixley Pkwy, Lodi, CA 95240, is about 26.5 miles straight-line and about 35–45 minutes south. Same nine services, same hours, kiosk on site. It is the south fallback, and the nearer option for Galt-side residents, who choose between Sacramento South to the north and Lodi to the south. Its AAA branch (2715 W Kettleman Ln Ste 201, Lodi, CA 95242, 1-209-366-6900, Monday–Friday 9–6, Saturday 9–5, member use only) is a partner option for Lodi-bound readers. Roseville, at 7200 Galilee Road, Roseville, CA 95678, is a farther-north mention only — same hours pattern and a kiosk badge on its card, but no distance is computed for it here.

How to use this table: check Sacramento South’s calendar first. If it is full, try Broadway the same day; if Broadway is full, widen the search to Carmichael in the same session; Folsom and Lodi are the farther fallbacks. Our statewide appointment guide explains the widen-your-search pattern in full at California DMV Appointment.

6. Three Places That Are NOT Your DMV — and Three Cities With No Office

Search results for “DMV near Sacramento South” mix three specialist sites and three no-office cities into the same lists as real field offices. Sending an ordinary resident to any of them for a licence, a REAL ID or a registration is a wasted trip. This section is the page’s core warning, and every entry in it was verified on dmv.ca.gov on November 6, 2026.

Sacramento-Florin IBC — an industry site, minutes away

The Sacramento-Florin Industry Business Center, at 7226 Florin Mall Dr, Sacramento, CA 95823, sits in the same ZIP as Sacramento South, minutes away — which is exactly why the confusion happens. Its own dmv.ca.gov page, read live on November 6, shows hours of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7 a.m.–4 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday, and closed Wednesday, November 11. Its services list shows only “Testing”, and it carries no kiosk badge. Industry Business Centers support industry partners — dealers, manufacturers, transporters and motor carriers. Proximity does not make it a public counter: do not go there for a licence, a REAL ID, a registration, or a standard drive test.

West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center — commercial testing only

The West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center, at 2528 Evergreen Ave, West Sacramento, CA 95691, keeps the same hours as the IBC (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7 a.m.–4 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday, closed November 11) and lists exactly three services on its own dmv.ca.gov page: Testing, Records, and Request miscellaneous original documents. No licensing, no registration, no title services, no kiosk badge. It is a commercial-drive-test site. Do not list it as an alternative for renewals, REAL ID or registration, and do not send standard drive-test applicants there without noting that it is the commercial site.

DMV Headquarters — an administrative building, not a counter

DMV Headquarters, at 2415 1st Ave, Sacramento, is an administrative headquarters, not a public field office. It does not take appointments, run a counter, or issue documents to walk-in visitors. A content-farm document circulating in search results places a “DMV Sacramento Head Office” at “2424 Arden Way” — wrong on both the address and the premise. Neither address is a place to go for DMV business.

Elk Grove, Galt and Rancho Cordova have no field office

Elk Grove has no field office. The URL dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/elk-grove/ returns a 404, re-confirmed on November 6, 2026. Elk Grove’s only dmv.ca.gov presence is the Safeway kiosk at 5021 Laguna Blvd and business partners (AAA Elk Grove Branch, Iregs And More LLC, Car Registration Inc.). Our phantom guide at Elk Grove DMV covers this in full and points here as the nearest office — this page returns that link. Elk Grove is a city of about 176,000 residents (2020 Census) with no hometown office, which is why Sacramento South matters as much as it does.

Galt has no field office either — its dmv.ca.gov field-office URL also returns a 404, re-confirmed on November 6, 2026. Galt’s dmv.ca.gov presence is a business partner (Galt Smog And Registration). Galt residents use Lodi to the south or Sacramento South to the north. Rancho Cordova has no field office — only a Safeway kiosk at 10635 Folsom Blvd, open 5 a.m. to midnight daily. Aggregator maps mislabel that kiosk as a “Rancho Cordova DMV” office; it is a kiosk, not an office. Wilton has no dmv.ca.gov field-office or kiosk card in the lists checked for this guide — do not list it as having either. And one fake address to warn against, carried from the Elk Grove guide: a moving-company page lists a DMV address of “9100 East Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove”. That address appears on no dmv.ca.gov office page. It is an invented address, and readers should not drive to it.

7. Kiosks: the On-Site Machine Plus the South Sacramento Cluster

Sacramento South has a self-serve kiosk on site — the badge and the line “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line” are on its own dmv.ca.gov page. Kiosks are self-serve stations where you can complete certain registration services and request driver or vehicle records; the range of services varies by kiosk location. Kiosk hours are store hours, not DMV office hours, and the DMV’s own line is that kiosks are “convenient and offer services that are quick and easy. No wait times and open daily!” Our full kiosk guide is at California DMV Kiosk.

Safeway in Sacramento (19th St.)1814 19th St., Sacramento, CA 95811Hours not printed on dmv.ca.gov — check in store

The Foods Co kiosk at 7421 W Stockton Blvd is the closest kiosk to the office itself, in the same 95823 ZIP. The Safeway kiosk in Elk Grove, at 5021 Laguna Blvd, is the in-Elk-Grove option — about 3.8 miles in a straight line from Sacramento South — and it is the kiosk the Elk Grove guide points to. Every hour in this table comes from dmv.ca.gov nearby-location cards read on November 6, 2026. Hours are never copied from a grocery store’s own website or a third-party listing onto a kiosk entry, and the 19th Street Safeway’s missing hours are printed as a gap, not filled in: the card lists the address and no hours, so this guide lists the address and no hours.

What kiosks cannot do

The honest scope matters more than the list. Kiosks cannot take appointments, run drive tests or knowledge tests, issue a REAL ID, or issue a new licence. They cover certain registration services and driver or vehicle record requests. If your task is a first REAL ID, a licence, a test, or anything that needs a person at a window, the kiosk is not a shortcut — book the office. If your task is a registration service the kiosk covers, the kiosk is open when the office is closed, including weekends, on store hours. That is the whole decision: match the task to the machine before you go.

8. DMV Partners Near Sacramento South: Registration Help for an Extra Fee

DMV business partners are private businesses authorised by the DMV to handle certain registration services — not DMV offices, and not a substitute for one. The DMV’s own wording is that partners handle registration services “often with much shorter wait times (if any!)” and that “additional fees may be applied by this partner”. Ask the price before handing over paperwork. Partners handle registration-type work only — never licences or REAL ID. The pattern to remember: partners = vehicle paperwork; the field office = everything involving you.

Three cautions belong with this table. First, the “Mon–Sun Closed” line that dmv.ca.gov shows for Capital Services and Iregs And More is a missing-hours placeholder, not a statement that the business is closed every day — this guide never prints it as hours. Second, branch hours are never transferred between AAA branches: Folsom’s and Lodi’s hours are theirs alone, and Elk Grove’s hours are not published on dmv.ca.gov, so they are not printed here. Third, the Elk Grove partners were re-verified on dmv.ca.gov’s own partner pages at build time on November 6, 2026 — the AAA Elk Grove Branch page and the Iregs And More page both exist on dmv.ca.gov with the addresses and phones printed above. The AAA move notice comes from AAA’s own site, which says the Elk Grove-Laguna branch moved to 8235 Laguna Boulevard, in the same shopping centre, just across the parking lot; until dmv.ca.gov updates its listing, call the branch before visiting.

For Lodi-bound readers, the Lodi page’s nearby list adds three more registration partners: Jennifer & Co (115 S Cherokee Ln, Lodi, CA 95240, 1-209-625-8354), ASHIQ Ramirez Auto Sales Inc (123 E. Pine St, Lodi, CA 95240, 1-209-912-8557, Monday–Friday 9–6, Saturday 11–6, Sunday closed), and Town Insurance Services (1338 S School St, Lodi, CA 95242, 1-209-368-6966, Monday–Saturday 10–6, Sunday closed). Jennifer & Co’s printed hours include an odd Thursday–Friday window, so call first. Our full AAA guide at AAA DMV Services California covers what AAA branches can and cannot do in both Northern and Southern California.

9. Getting There: Transit, and Why Driving Usually Wins

Driving beats transit to this office — say it plainly, because it is the honest answer for most readers. Sacramento South sits in a car-oriented part of south Sacramento, and no source supports a claim that a bus stops at the office door. What follows is the transit picture as it can honestly be stated, with the reader pointed at the SacRT trip planner for the day they travel.

SacRT runs south Sacramento buses and light rail. The Blue Line light rail serves the south corridor, with Meadowview Station, 47th Avenue Station and Cosumnes River College Station as the southern stations. SacRT bus routes in the south-Sacramento network include Route 56 (Meadowview to Cosumnes River College, via Methodist Hospital, Kaiser South Sacramento, Southpointe Plaza and Meadowview Station), Route 81 (along Florin Road), and Route 5 (Meadowview to Valley Hi, Florin High to Meadowview Station), plus the Elk Grove locals E110–E116 and the commuter routes E10–E19 between Elk Grove and downtown Sacramento on weekday peaks. Route numbers come from SacRT’s own route lists as summarised in secondary sources, and they are given here at route level only — no route is claimed to stop at 7775 La Mancha Way, and no walk time from any station or stop to the office is stated, because no verified source states one.

Two traps to avoid when reading older transit posts. First, older blog posts still show pre-annexation e-tran numbers (10–19 and 110–116 without the “E” prefix). The current SacRT numbers for Elk Grove routes carry the “E” prefix — E10–E19 and E110–E116 — and older posts using the bare numbers are stale. Second, trip-planning apps still list some routes under the old e-tran names; SacRT’s own planner is the authority, not the app. Plan the trip in the planner for the day you travel, and allow for the walk from the nearest stop, which no source in this guide measures. No parking description appears anywhere on this page, because no official source describes the lot, its size, or street parking — this guide will not invent one.

10. Who This Office Actually Serves

Sacramento South is the default DMV for south Sacramento neighbourhoods — Florin, Meadowview, Valley Hi and Parkway — and for the Elk Grove and Galt corridor to the south. Elk Grove, a city of about 176,000 residents (2020 Census) with no field office of its own, is the largest single population this office serves; Galt-side residents choose between Sacramento South to the north and Lodi to the south. The office is the southernmost full-service field office in Sacramento proper, and the closest full office to Elk Grove, which is the page’s “why this office matters” story in one sentence.

Two honest boundaries belong here. First, dmv.ca.gov publishes no service-area boundaries, and any California resident may use any field office — the catchment in this section is a description of who naturally uses this office, not an official map. Second, this page prints no history of the office building and no population figure for Sacramento itself, because no verified figure for either was pulled for this guide. The office’s own dmv.ca.gov place data lists it as “Active”, and its current canonical URL is the /portal/field-office/sacramento-south/ page linked in Sources; an older predecessor-era detail page still circulates in search results, and the current page is the one to bookmark.

If you live in Elk Grove and this is your first DMV visit, start with our Elk Grove DMV guide — it explains the phantom-guide premise (there is no office in Elk Grove), the in-city kiosk, and why Sacramento South is the default. If you live in central Sacramento, compare with Sacramento (Broadway) before you choose. And if you are choosing between offices only because one calendar looks full, read the appointment guide’s widen-your-search pattern first — it is faster than driving to a second office to find the same answer.

11. Before You Leave Home — the Sacramento South Checklist

Most bad DMV trips are not caused by the office. They are caused by arriving for a service the counter does not provide, arriving on the wrong day, or arriving without the original document the transaction needs. Work through this list before you leave:

  • Check that your task is a counter service. Simple registration renewal, licence or ID renewal (unless your notice says otherwise), record requests and replacement driver’s licences have no counter service — do them online, at a kiosk, through a partner, or by mail. If your task is on that list, do not come to the office.
  • Start the online application first. For licence and ID transactions, appointment slots only open after you submit the online application. Complete it, then return to book.
  • Book the right appointment type. Field Office Appointment for licence, REAL ID and registration services; Drive Test Appointment for behind-the-wheel exams. They are separate bookings.
  • Check the calendar for the day, not the week. Wednesday opens at 9 a.m., not 8 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed for Veterans Day. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 p.m. — arrive with time to start one.
  • Gather originals, not photocopies. First-time REAL ID needs proof of identity, proof of a Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency, in original form. Use the DMV’s REAL ID checklist and our documents checklist before you go.
  • Bring a payment method the office accepts. Cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, or money order — the six methods on the office’s own page.
  • For a drive test, bring the car and the licensed driver. The car needs valid registration and insurance, working signals, brake lights and horn; a licensed driver must drive you there.
  • Check the live wait times on the day, not the week before. The DMV’s current-wait-times page shows the wait at the moment you look; a figure from last week tells you nothing about today.
  • If the calendar is full, widen the search before you drive. Broadway first (about 15 minutes), then Carmichael, then Folsom or Lodi — all in the same booking session, per section 5.
  • If you are going for registration work only, consider the kiosk or a partner first. The on-site kiosk, the Foods Co and Safeway kiosks, and the partners in section 8 handle registration services — often without an appointment and on weekend store hours.

The three mistakes this page exists to correct: (1) arriving at 8 a.m. on a Wednesday, when the office opens at 9 a.m.; (2) driving to the Sacramento-Florin IBC, the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center, or DMV Headquarters for an ordinary visit — none of them is a public counter; (3) coming for a simple renewal or a replacement licence, which has no counter service at all. Get the day, the door, and the task right, in that order, and the visit is already shorter than the pages currently ranking for this office will make it.

12. What the Internet Gets Wrong About This Office

The pages ranking for Sacramento South are a mix of accurate official data, accurate driving-school guides, and errors that cost readers a trip. This section names the errors with the correct official fact beside each one, so you can recognise them when you meet them elsewhere. No error is repeated here as fact.

  • Wrong Sacramento address. A third-party phone guide prints a Sacramento DMV office address on Folsom Boulevard. The correct address for the Sacramento (Broadway) office is 4700 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95820, on dmv.ca.gov. The Folsom Boulevard address is not a DMV field office address.
  • Self-contradictory walk-in claims. The same third-party site says on one page that you cannot walk in without an appointment and on another that walk-ins are accepted at all DMV offices, and it gives three different counts for how many field offices California has. The DMV’s position is simpler and is the one this page prints: appointments are recommended, Get in Line is the same-day path, and drive tests always need an appointment. No blanket walk-in claim is printed anywhere on this page.
  • False Saturday hours. A directory page claims Sacramento DMV offices are typically open on Saturdays. All Sacramento-area field offices are closed Saturday and Sunday on their own dmv.ca.gov calendars. Kiosks run on store hours including weekends; field offices do not.
  • Hours with no Wednesday late opening. A content-farm page about “South Sac DMV” prints hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with no Wednesday exception, alongside a stale fee table. Wednesday opens at 9 a.m. at every full office in this guide, and this page prints no fee figure at all.
  • A fake DMV headquarters. A content-farm document places a “DMV Sacramento Head Office” on Arden Way, open weekdays with a last appointment at 4:30 p.m. DMV Headquarters is at 2415 1st Ave, Sacramento, and it is an administrative building, not a public counter. The Arden Way address is not a DMV office.
  • Review anecdotes as guidance. An aggregator page pads correct address and hours with unmoderated user reviews quoting multi-hour waits as if they were the office’s normal wait. Wait-time minutes are never printed on this site; the only honest wait figure is the live one on the DMV’s own wait-times page, at the moment you look.
  • Test types the DMV does not list. A third-party Folsom page lists motorcycle and CDL tests as Folsom services. dmv.ca.gov’s service list for full offices is the nine items in section 1, with no separate motorcycle or CDL line; test types are itemised by the scheduler at booking time only.
  • A stale first-time fee and an unverified test count. A permit guide states a first-time fee figure that conflicts with the DMV’s current schedule, and states the permit test’s question count and passing score from a single third-party source. This page prints neither figure: no fee figure appears anywhere on it, and the test’s question count is not stated as verified fact.
  • The fake Elk Grove address. A moving-company page lists a DMV address on East Stockton Boulevard in Elk Grove. There is no field office in Elk Grove — the URL returns a 404 on dmv.ca.gov — and the nearest real office is Sacramento South, 7775 La Mancha Way.
  • The DMV’s own “Wed closed” card line. The nearby-location cards on dmv.ca.gov render Wednesday as “Wed closed — closed” for offices whose own calendars show Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a rendering quirk of the card template, not a closure — always use the office’s own calendar for hours, as section 2 explains.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Sacramento South DMV hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday closed. The office is closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Veterans Day. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 p.m.

Where is the Sacramento South DMV located?

7775 La Mancha Way, Sacramento, CA 95823 — in south Sacramento, in the 95823 ZIP, on the Elk Grove side of the city. It is the closest full DMV office to Elk Grove, about a 10–20 minute drive from central Elk Grove in normal traffic.

Do I need an appointment at the Sacramento South DMV?

Appointments are recommended for the visits that need a person at a window — first REAL ID, original licences and permits, and behind-the-wheel drive tests. Book at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. Drive tests always need a scheduled Drive Test Appointment, and for licence and ID transactions, slots only open after you submit the online application.

Can I walk into the Sacramento South DMV without an appointment?

There is no blanket walk-in promise on this page, because the DMV publishes none. Appointment holders are served first, and same-day visits run through Get in Line where it is available. And some tasks have no counter service at all: simple renewals, replacement licences and record requests must be done online, at a kiosk, through a partner, or by mail.

Is the Sacramento South DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?

No. All Sacramento-area field offices are closed Saturday and Sunday on their own dmv.ca.gov calendars. Kiosks run on store hours including weekends, and some business partners are open on Saturdays — but only for registration services.

Does the Sacramento South DMV have a self-serve kiosk?

Yes — on site. Its own dmv.ca.gov page carries the kiosk badge and the line “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line.” Kiosks handle certain registration services and driver or vehicle record requests. They cannot issue a REAL ID, run tests, or take appointments.

Can I get a REAL ID at the Sacramento South DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID needs an in-person visit with original documents: proof of identity, proof of a Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency. Use the DMV’s REAL ID document checklist first, and see our REAL ID appointment guide for the full documents list. REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025.

Can I take my behind-the-wheel drive test at Sacramento South?

Yes — “Testing” is one of the office’s official services. Book a Drive Test Appointment in advance; there is no walk-in path for a drive test. Bring a car with valid registration and insurance, working signals, brake lights and horn, and a licensed driver to drive you there. Tests are field-office only, not at kiosks, partners, or the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center for standard tests.

What services does the Sacramento South DMV offer?

The nine official services are Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates, Permits & Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, Request miscellaneous original documents, and Self Service Terminals. What it does not do at the counter: simple registration renewal, licence or ID renewal (unless your notice says otherwise), record requests, and replacement driver’s licences — those go online, to a kiosk, to a partner, or by mail.

What is the closest DMV to Elk Grove?

Sacramento South, at 7775 La Mancha Way, Sacramento, CA 95823 — about 10–20 minutes from central Elk Grove in normal traffic. Elk Grove itself has no field office; the Safeway kiosk in Elk Grove at 5021 Laguna Blvd (5 a.m. to midnight daily) covers certain registration services in town. See our Elk Grove DMV guide for the full picture.

What forms of payment does the Sacramento South DMV accept?

Cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order — the six methods printed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page.

Which DMV should I go to if Sacramento South is booked — Broadway, Carmichael, or Lodi?

Broadway first: Sacramento (Broadway) at 4700 Broadway is about 5.0 miles straight-line and about 15 minutes away. Then Carmichael at 5209 North Ave (about 11.2 miles, 25–30 minutes), then Folsom or Lodi as farther fallbacks. All list the same nine services and have kiosks on site, and all open Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Check each office’s calendar before driving.
