Eureka DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The full-service DMV field office for Eureka and all of Humboldt County — nine counter services, an on-site self-service kiosk, and behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and CDL road tests. Eureka is the county seat and the county’s only full-time, Monday-to-Friday DMV office, so for most of the week it is the only office Humboldt County has. But check the rules before you book: simple renewals, records, and replacement licenses get no counter service at all, and the county’s second office, Garberville, is open two days a week only. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

TL;DR

  • Address: 2500 6th St, Eureka, CA 95501. The office moved here from its old Bayshore Mall location — old listings that still send you to the mall are out of date.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday closed. Closed on state holidays — including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day).
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published.
  • Appointments: recommended for faster service; behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses get no counter service — use the DMV Now kiosk inside this office, dmv.ca.gov, or the AAA Eureka Branch (members only).
  • The county picture: Eureka is Humboldt County’s only full-time DMV office. Garberville (Redway) is the county’s second office, open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, with no CDL test. If Eureka is booked out, Crescent City to the north is the only practical out-of-county fallback.
  • Tests here: behind-the-wheel, CDL road test, motorcycle skills test, and the written knowledge test. The DMV’s own test-site list names Eureka as a noncommercial Class A / Class B test site and a CDL test location.

2500 6th St, Eureka, CA 95501
Humboldt County seat — North Coast full-service office with on-site kiosk and CDL tests

1Eureka’s county-seat office — and the rule that saves most trips

If you live in Eureka, this is your DMV office — and it is a good one to have. The field office at 2500 6th St is a full-service office with an on-site self-service kiosk: nine services on the DMV’s list, from licensing and testing to title transfers, registration, plates, replacements, records, and the kiosk itself. Eureka is the principal city and county seat of Humboldt County, on U.S. Route 101 on Humboldt Bay, 270 miles north of San Francisco and 100 miles south of the Oregon border, and the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland. It is the regional center for government, health care, trade, and the arts on the North Coast — which is why its DMV office carries so much of the county’s traffic, and why getting its facts right matters: readers from smaller Humboldt County communities who search for a local DMV will find no office in their own town, and Eureka (or Garberville, two days a week, for the south of the county) is the office the DMV system actually gives them.

But the most important paragraph on this page is not about this office at all — it is about the trips you do not need to make. The DMV’s own appointments page states, in its “Know Before You Go” section, that the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions “must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” A large share of people searching for this office do not need the office at all, and this page says so up front rather than funneling everyone into an appointment. The office’s own kiosk (section 8) and the AAA branch and registration service in section 8 are the correct redirections for exactly those transactions. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, the kiosk inside this office probably beats a counter visit. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the office.

Two more identity facts before you go anywhere. First, this office is in Eureka, California, in Humboldt County — not Eureka, Montana, and not Eureka, Nevada. Search engines mix them; one sentence here keeps you from following the wrong map pin. Second, this page is an independent guide, not the DMV. We cannot book for you, we cannot see live slot availability, and we never charge for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below — address, hours, services, payments, nearby offices, kiosks, partners — was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on November 3, 2026. Where a fact could not be verified on an official source, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no wait-time minutes, no review numbers, no parking description, and no drive-test route appear anywhere below.

2Address — and the stale-address trap

The Eureka DMV office is at 2500 6th St, Eureka, CA 95501. That address is confirmed three ways: the DMV’s own office page, the independent dmvca.info location page, and Google place data all agree on it. The office sits on 6th Street in central Eureka, reached off U.S. Route 101, the highway that runs the length of the North Coast through the city.

The trap is the old address. The office used to sit inside the Bayshore Mall, and a surprising number of listings — including a well-known California DMV office map — still show the old mall address. A May 2020 local report noted the office was “still located inside the Bayshore Mall for the time being,” which dates the move to after 2020. If a search result, a printed directory, or an old bookmark sends you to the Bayshore Mall, that address is out of date: go to 2500 6th St instead. This page prints only the current address, and it is worth checking any address you find elsewhere against dmv.ca.gov before you drive.

For the record, the office’s coordinates are 40.803313, −124.143595. If your maps app offers more than one “Eureka DMV” pin, pick the one at 2500 6th St.

3Hours — including the Wednesday late open and the Veterans Day closure

Eureka keeps the standard California field-office week, with the usual Wednesday late open:

DayHours
Monday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tuesday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Wednesday9:00 am – 5:00 pm (late open)
Thursday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
SaturdayClosed
SundayClosed

These hours were read from the DMV’s own day-by-day calendar for the weeks of November 1–14, 2026, and cross-checked against dmvca.info and Google place data. The pattern is the same every week: four days at 8:00 am, Wednesday at 9:00 am, weekends closed.

Two closures to put in your diary. First, Wednesday, November 11, 2026, the office is closed for Veterans Day, a state holiday — the DMV’s own calendar shows it as closed that day, and all California field offices close on state holidays. Do not plan a November 11 visit. Second, the office is closed on every state holiday, so if your visit falls on one, check the DMV holiday schedule first rather than driving to a locked door. Note also that written/knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm anywhere in California, so a late-afternoon arrival cannot take the written test that day.

One more honesty note: the DMV’s own “current wait times” widget showed no live wait-time figure for this office when we checked on November 3, 2026 — it simply read closed. This page therefore prints no wait-time number for Eureka. Any site that quotes one for this office is guessing.

4Services at this office

The DMV’s Eureka office page lists nine service groups. The table below is that list, with a plain-English note on what each one actually covers at the counter:

ServiceWhat it covers here
Licensing servicesFirst licenses, license renewals that require an in-person visit, and license changes
TestingBehind-the-wheel drive test, CDL road test, motorcycle skills test, written knowledge test
Title transfersTransferring a vehicle title after a sale, gift, or inheritance
RegistrationFirst registrations and registration transactions that need the counter
Plates, permits & placardsLicense plates, permits, and disabled placards
Replace lost / stolen / damagedReplacements that require an in-person visit
RecordsDriver and vehicle record requests that need the counter (most record requests can be done online instead)
Miscellaneous original documentsOriginal documents the DMV issues in person
Self Service TerminalsThe DMV Now kiosk inside the office — see section 8

REAL ID is offered here: a first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit, and this office handles it (section 7). Payments accepted at the office are cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order, per the DMV’s own office page. The office phone is the statewide DMV number, 1-800-777-0133 — no office-direct number is published. The automated line runs 24/7; representatives are available Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What is not on the list matters as much as what is. Routine registration renewals, routine license and ID renewals, most record requests, and most replacement licenses are not counter transactions at all (section 1). If that is your errand, the kiosk in this office, the DMV website, or a business partner will finish it faster than an appointment will.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

Book online at dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/select-appointment-type or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. The DMV runs two appointment types: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test. Booking is free — if any website asks you to pay to book a DMV appointment, it is not the DMV.

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services. Walk-ins are taken on the DMV’s same-day check-in system, which replaced the old “Get in Line” system during 2026 with QR-based virtual intake: you check in on arrival and are served as capacity allows, with appointment holders served first. Expect to wait longer without an appointment, and arrive early if you walk in. The one hard rule is the drive test: behind-the-wheel driving tests always require an appointment — there is no walk-in drive test.

Three practical tips that hold statewide and apply here. First, book as early as you can: drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in the system, and checking back for cancellations is the standard way people pull a date forward. Second, mid-week and mid-month visits are typically quieter than Mondays, Fridays, and the first and last days of the month, when renewal deadlines pile up. Third, bring the right documents the first time — section 11 has the per-transaction checklists — because a missing document is the most common reason a visit ends in a second trip. This page states no Eureka-specific wait time because none is published; the “best time” advice here is a statewide pattern, not a measured figure for this office.

6Driving tests at Eureka: behind-the-wheel, CDL, motorcycle, and written

Eureka is a real test office, not a paperwork-only branch. The DMV’s own driving-test-sites list names Eureka as a noncommercial Class A / Class B test site and a CDL test location, and the office offers four test types:

TestAppointment?Notes
Behind-the-wheel drive testYes — appointment requiredThe standard license road test; bring a valid instruction permit, proof of insurance, the vehicle’s registration, and a safe, roadworthy vehicle
CDL road testYes — appointment requiredEureka is the only CDL test site in Humboldt County — Garberville does not offer it
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered on site; confirm the current booking route on dmv.ca.gov
Written knowledge testWalk-in or appointmentNot offered after 4:30 pm, anywhere in California

What to bring for the behind-the-wheel test. A valid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, and a vehicle that is safe and roadworthy. Before the drive begins, the examiner runs a pre-drive check of the vehicle’s controls: hand signals, lighting controls, windshield wipers, hazard lights, the defroster, gears, and the parking brake. If any of those do not work, the test does not start — check them the day before, not in the office car park. The drive itself is typically a short on-road route around the office, usually in the region of 10–20 minutes of driving statewide, though that is a statewide typical figure, not a measured Eureka route time; this page does not publish a Eureka test route, because the DMV does not publish one.

Why people drive here for tests. Eureka’s test role reaches beyond Humboldt County. Review accounts from the county’s other office, Garberville, describe parents driving in from as far as Marin County for shorter test waits, and several describe failing a test at Garberville and passing on retest in Eureka. The safe takeaway is the choice itself, not any claim about examiners: Eureka is the full-time, all-test-types office; Garberville is the short-lines, two-days-a-week office. If you fail a test, there is a waiting period before you can retake it — check the current retake rule on dmv.ca.gov before you rebook, because this page does not print a retake interval that it has not re-verified. You can take your driving test at any California field office, not only the one nearest your home, which is exactly why the Eureka-versus-Garberville choice matters to people who live between the two.

7REAL ID at Eureka

Yes — this office issues REAL ID. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit: it cannot be done online or at a kiosk. You will need proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency — originals only, no photocopies. Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit, because the acceptable documents have specific rules (for example, which residency documents count and how recent they must be), and this page does not improvise that list.

The context: REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025, so a standard license no longer gets you through a TSA checkpoint for a domestic flight — you need a REAL ID, a passport, or another TSA-accepted document. A REAL ID is not required to drive, and it is not required for a standard license renewal; it is only required if you want your license to double as federal identification. If your only goal is to keep driving, a standard renewal is enough. If you fly domestically and do not carry a passport, the REAL ID visit is worth the trip. Book it as a field-office appointment, bring the documents above, and allow extra time: the document check at the counter takes longer than a simple renewal.

8Kiosk, online, AAA, and R&B: four ways to skip the counter

Most Eureka DMV errands never need a counter or an appointment. Here are the four alternatives, in the order most people should try them:

OptionWhereGood forWatch out for
DMV Now kiosk (in this office)2500 6th St, inside the field office, during office hoursCertain registration services and driver/vehicle record requestsCannot do licenses, IDs, or driving tests; the exact service range varies by kiosk
Online at dmv.ca.govdmv.ca.govRegistration renewal, license/ID renewal, records, replacements, address changesSome transactions require an in-person visit if your renewal notice says so
AAA Eureka Branch1470 Broadway, Eureka, CA 95501; 1-707-444-1000Registration renewal and similar services; Saturday hours listedMembers only; credit-card payments can carry a fee of up to 1.72%; confirm Saturday DMV-service hours before you go
R&B Auto Registration Service140 Hatchery Rd, Blue Lake, CA 95525; 1-707-668-5530; Mon–Fri 9:00 am–4:00 pmCertain registration services through a DMV-authorized business partnerAdditional fees may apply; closed weekends

The kiosk deserves a sentence of its own. The DMV’s Eureka page states plainly: “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line.” If your errand is a registration renewal and you are already at 2500 6th St, the kiosk inside the door is usually faster than the counter queue. The AAA branch is the only Saturday option in town for DMV services — the field office itself is closed on Saturdays — but it is members only, so a non-member cannot use it. R&B in Blue Lake is the small-town alternative east of Eureka for registration work, with weekday hours only.

9Humboldt County guide: which office for which town

Here is the correction that matters most on this page. A common claim on other sites is that Eureka is “the only DMV field office in Humboldt County.” That is wrong. Garberville DMV, at 1180 Evergreen Rd in Redway, is a second, active DMV field office in Humboldt County, in the south of the county. What is true, and what this page states instead, is that Eureka is the county’s only full-time (Monday–Friday) field office, and the only one in the county offering CDL road tests. For most of the week, and for CDL tests, Eureka is the only option in the county — which is a stronger reader story than the false claim, and it is accurate.

Best forEverything, every weekday; the only choice Mon, Wed, FriShort lines for southern Humboldt, Tue/Thu only

Which office for which town. Northern Humboldt — Arcata (about 7 miles north of Eureka), McKinleyville, Trinidad, Orick — uses Eureka; it is the nearest office. The Eel River Valley — Fortuna, Ferndale, Rio Dell, Scotia — also uses Eureka, roughly 20–30 minutes north on US-101. Southern Humboldt — Garberville, Redway, Miranda, Myers Flat, Weott — uses the Garberville office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Eureka as the full-time fallback, about 60 miles north on US-101. Eastern Humboldt — Willow Creek, Hoopa, Bridgeville — has no DMV office of its own; Eureka is the answer, via State Route 299 or State Route 96. If you live in the south of the county and miss Garberville’s two-day window, do not wait for next Tuesday — drive to Eureka.

The Eureka-versus-Garberville choice, honestly. Review accounts from Garberville describe two real trade-offs. Some visitors praise Garberville’s short lines — one reviewer reports never waiting more than 15–20 minutes — while others describe failing a test there and passing on retest in Eureka, and some drove in from as far as Marin County for a shorter test wait. The usable takeaway is the choice, not any claim about individual examiners (this page names none, and review anecdotes about named individuals are not verified facts): Garberville means short lines on two days a week with no CDL test; Eureka means full-time hours, every test type, and busier rooms. Pick Garberville if you live in southern Humboldt, your errand fits its services, and it is a Tuesday or Thursday. Pick Eureka for everything else.

10If Eureka is booked: the nearest alternatives

For almost every Humboldt County resident, the honest answer is “Eureka, or Garberville on a Tuesday or Thursday if you live in the south of the county.” The out-of-county offices below are fallbacks for when Eureka is fully booked, and only one of them is genuinely practical. Distances are approximate road distances from Eureka, labelled as such:

Alternative officeAddressDistance from Eureka (approx.)Drive (approx.)Notes
Crescent City DMV1475 Parkway Dr, Crescent City, CA 95531About 75 miles north on US-101About 1¾ hoursTue/Thu only, 8–5. Best fallback for northern Humboldt (Orick, Trinidad, McKinleyville) if Eureka is booked out.
Fort Bragg DMV410 S Franklin St, Fort Bragg, CA 95437About 120 miles via US-101 S / SR-20 WAbout 3 hoursPart-time office — check its current open days on dmv.ca.gov before you drive. Only worth it combined with a coastal Mendocino trip, not as a Eureka substitute.
Ukiah DMV542 S Orchard Ave, Ukiah, CA 95482About 157 miles via US-101 SAbout 3 hoursFull-time office. Realistic only if combined with a southbound trip.
Red Bluff DMV675 Monroe St, Red Bluff, CA 96080About 170–180 miles via SR-299 E / I-5 SAbout 3½ hoursApproximate figures only. A fallback for eastern-Humboldt and Trinity-area residents, not a practical Eureka substitute.
Weaverville DMV1511 Main St, Weaverville, CA 9609363.6 miles (straight-line, approximate)Tue/Thu only, 8am–5pm, lunch closed 12:00–1:15pmTue/Thu only, 8am–5pm, with a 75-minute lunch closure from 12:00 to 1:15 pm. Listed for eastern Humboldt completeness; 63.6 miles away in a straight line.

The pattern is clear: beyond Crescent City to the north, every alternative is a three-hour drive. That is the real cost of a fully booked week in Eureka, and it is why booking early — and using Garberville on its two days — matters more here than it does in a city with five offices.

11Best time to visit — and what to bring

Best time. This page prints no Eureka-specific wait time, because none is published and the DMV’s own wait widget returned no live figure for this office. What holds statewide is that Mondays, Fridays, and the first and last days of the month are the busiest, and mid-week, mid-month mornings are typically quieter — that is a statewide pattern, not a measured Eureka figure, and it is labelled as such. Arrive early, bring everything on the checklist below, and do not plan a visit for a state holiday (section 3).

What to bring — by transaction.

TransactionBring
First REAL IDProof of identity, proof of Social Security number, two proofs of California residency — originals only (check the DMV’s REAL ID document list first)
Behind-the-wheel testValid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, a safe and roadworthy vehicle (pre-drive check: hand signals, lights, wipers, hazards, defroster, gears, parking brake)
First licenseProof of identity, proof of residency, and your completed application; minors need the driver-education and permit steps finished first
Title transferThe signed title, a bill of sale if you have one, and identification; report the transfer promptly (the DMV’s notice-of-transfer step protects the seller)
Registration (first registration)Title or proof of ownership, proof of insurance, and identification; smog certification where required
Renewal or replacement (in person)Your renewal notice if it specifies an in-person visit, identification, and payment (cash, check, card, digital wallet, or money order)

Just moved to Humboldt County? Two deadlines, and they are different — do not mix them up. You have 20 days to register your vehicle in California (Vehicle Code §4152.5) and 10 days to get a California driver’s license (Vehicle Code §12505(c)), both counted from the date you establish residency. New residents who need both should book the Eureka office early in that window, and bring the out-of-state title and registration with them.

12Why this office matters: the 2018 closure fight and the move

This office has been fought over before, which tells you how much the region depends on it. In July 2018 the DMV notified local officials that the Eureka office would close for nearly four months for renovations starting in mid-August. State Senator Mike McGuire and Assemblymember Jim Wood objected publicly, and the DMV postponed the closure and committed not to close the office as planned. The episode is a matter of public record (Senate District 2 press release, July 26, 2018), and it is the clearest evidence that this is not a minor branch: for a county with only two offices, losing the full-time one for four months would have left the entire North Coast without a weekday DMV.

The office has also moved in living memory. In May 2020, when Eureka and Garberville were among the 46 offices reopened after the March 2020 COVID closure, the Eureka office was still inside the Bayshore Mall. It has since moved to 2500 6th St — which is why so many listings are stale (section 2). A first-person account from 2016 describes a couple registering an imported trailer at the Eureka office on a 10:00 am appointment and finishing in 55 minutes, plates included — an old story, but the only narrative review found, and a reminder that this office handles out-of-state and import registrations in person. The office that exists today is the county seat’s full-time office, with a kiosk, CDL tests, and nine services — and for three days of every week, it is the only DMV office open anywhere in Humboldt County.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the Eureka DMV office?

2500 6th St, Eureka, CA 95501. It is on 6th Street in Eureka, the county seat of Humboldt County. Old listings that still send you to the office’s former Bayshore Mall location are out of date — go to 2500 6th St.

What are the Eureka DMV hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday closed. The office is also closed on state holidays, including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day).

Is the Eureka DMV open on Saturday?

No. The Eureka field office is closed every Saturday and Sunday. The nearest Saturday DMV option is the AAA Eureka Branch at 1470 Broadway (members only, Saturday hours listed for DMV services) — confirm its Saturday DMV-service hours before you go.

Do I need an appointment at the Eureka DMV?

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services; walk-ins are served through the DMV’s same-day check-in system. The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/select-appointment-type or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free.

Can I walk into the Eureka DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most services — but expect to wait, because appointment holders are served first. Arrive early, and prefer a mid-week, mid-month visit for the shortest lines. This is a statewide pattern; no Eureka-specific wait time is published.

Does the Eureka DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel tests, CDL road tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel and CDL tests require an appointment. The DMV’s own test-site list names Eureka as a noncommercial Class A / Class B test site and a CDL test location.

Can I get a REAL ID at the Eureka DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit. REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025.

Is there a DMV kiosk in Eureka?

Yes — a self-service DMV Now kiosk is inside the Eureka field office at 2500 6th St, open during office hours. It handles certain registration services and driver/vehicle record requests. It does not handle licenses, IDs, or driving tests.

What is the phone number for the Eureka DMV?

1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Eureka. The AAA Eureka Branch, a separate member-only option, is 1-707-444-1000.

Is the Eureka DMV the only DMV in Humboldt County?

No. Garberville DMV (1180 Evergreen Rd, Redway) is also in Humboldt County, but it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Eureka is the county’s only full-time, Monday–Friday field office, and the only one in the county offering CDL road tests.

What is the closest DMV to Eureka if this office is booked?

Garberville/Redway, about 60 miles south (Tuesdays and Thursdays only) for southern Humboldt, and Crescent City, about 75 miles north (Tuesday and Thursday only) for the north coast. Fort Bragg, Ukiah, and Red Bluff are all around three hours away and only make sense combined with another trip. Distances are approximate.

What do I need to bring for my behind-the-wheel test in Eureka?

A valid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, and a safe, roadworthy vehicle. The examiner’s pre-drive check covers hand signals, lighting controls, windshield wipers, hazard lights, the defroster, gears, and the parking brake — check them the day before, not in the car park.
