Auburn DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The county-seat DMV field office for Auburn and the Placer County foothills — open five days a week, with behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written tests and REAL ID. It is one of three DMV field offices in Placer County, and the only one of the three without a self-service kiosk. But check the rules before you book: simple renewals, records, and replacement licenses get no counter service at all, and there is no CDL test here. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

TL;DR

  • Address: 11722 Enterprise Dr, Auburn, CA 95603 — in the Enterprise Drive business area, just off Interstate 80 in the Sierra foothills. Do not use the “12055 High Street” address printed by one ranking guide — it is wrong, and no source corroborates it.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday, every week. This is a full-time office — the only full-time DMV in the Placer County foothills.
  • This week: in the week of November 9–13, 2026, the office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday — and closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day, a state holiday when every California DMV field office is closed.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Auburn.
  • Appointments: recommended for faster service; behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Same-day check-in (Get in Line) runs 7:50 am–4:00 pm, Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm.
  • No kiosk here: this office has no self-service DMV Now kiosk — it is the only one of Placer County’s three field offices without one. The nearest kiosks are at the Roseville and Rocklin field offices and the Folsom office. Registration renewals and record requests go online, to a kiosk elsewhere, to a DMV partner, or by mail instead.
  • No CDL test here: Auburn does not offer CDL road tests. Neither do Roseville or Rocklin. The nearest CDL test site to the foothill corridor is Yuba City.
  • The county picture: Placer County has THREE DMV field offices, not one — Auburn (the county seat, full-time), Roseville (7200 Galilee Rd, full-time, kiosk), and Rocklin (5245 South Grove, full-time, kiosk). Any office serves any Californian; pick by the service you need, not by the town line.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses get no counter service — use dmv.ca.gov online services, a kiosk, a partner like the AAA Auburn Branch, or mail. There is no kiosk in this office to fall back on.
  • Tests here: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle skills test, and the written knowledge test. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California.
  • Saturday option: the DMV office is closed on Saturdays, but the AAA Auburn Branch (2480 Grass Valley Hwy) handles registration-type DMV services on Saturdays, 9:00 am–4:30 pm, for members only.

11722 Enterprise Dr, Auburn, CA 95603
Placer County seat — full-time office (Mon–Fri) with drive tests and REAL ID, no kiosk, no CDL test

1Auburn’s county-seat office — and the three-office correction that matters most

If you live in Auburn, this is your DMV office — and it is a full-time one, which is the first thing this page has to tell you, because the rest of the foothill corridor is not. The field office at 11722 Enterprise Dr is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a 9:00 am open on Wednesdays, and it handles the full counter range the DMV lists for a field office: licensing, testing, title transfers, registration, plates, permits and placards, replacements, and records. Auburn is the county seat of Placer County — it has been the seat since the county was formed on April 25, 1851 — and the city had a 2020 census population of 13,776. It is a Gold Rush town: gold was found in Auburn Ravine in May 1848, and the city grew up around that strike on the road that is now Interstate 80, in the Sierra Nevada foothills northeast of Sacramento. The county’s courts, recorder, and other official county functions sit here alongside the DMV, which is why its DMV office carries the foothill half of the county’s traffic.

But the most important paragraph on this page is a correction, and it is the reason this page exists in its present form. A common assumption — and the premise this page was originally planned around — is that Auburn is “the only DMV field office in Placer County” and therefore the nearest office for the whole county. That is wrong. Placer County has three DMV field offices, all verified on dmv.ca.gov on November 4, 2026: Auburn (11722 Enterprise Dr, the county seat, full-time, no kiosk), Roseville (7200 Galilee Rd, full-time, with a kiosk), and Rocklin (5245 South Grove, full-time, with a kiosk). Roseville is the county’s largest city, and its office and Rocklin’s serve the fast-growing south of the county; Auburn serves the county seat and the foothill communities up Interstate 80 and State Route 49. Any California DMV office serves any Californian — you are not tied to the one nearest your address — so the honest question is never “which office is mine” but “which office has what I need, on the day I can go.” That question is the subject of section 9.

The second most important paragraph is about the trips you do not need to make. The DMV’s own appointments page states that the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions “must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” In Auburn that list bites harder than it does in Roseville or Rocklin, because Auburn is the one Placer County office with no kiosk: for a renewal or a record, the answer is online, a kiosk at another office, the AAA Auburn Branch, or mail — not a drive to Enterprise Drive. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, do not drive to the office at all. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the office is the place — book it, and bring the documents in section 11.

Two more identity facts before you go anywhere. First, this office is in Auburn, California, in Placer County — not Auburn, Alabama, and not Auburn, New York, or Auburn, Washington. Search engines mix the Auburns constantly — the top ten results for “Auburn DMV office” include Alabama, New York, Washington, Indiana, Maine, and Nebraska — and following the wrong one costs hours. One sentence here keeps you from following the wrong map pin. Second, this page is an independent guide, not the DMV. We cannot book for you, we cannot see live slot availability, and we never charge for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below — address, hours, services, payments, nearby offices, tests, kiosk, transit — was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on November 4, 2026, and cross-checked against a second source. Where a fact could not be verified, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no wait-time minutes, no review numbers, no fee amounts, no parking description, and no bus stop at the office door appear anywhere below.

2Address — Enterprise Drive, just off Interstate 80

The Auburn DMV office is at 11722 Enterprise Dr, Auburn, CA 95603. That address is confirmed five ways: the DMV’s own office page, the DMV’s own place data (which gives the same address and the coordinates 38.907248, −121.084152), the DMV’s QR locator, the independent dmvca.info location page, and the DMV’s own office-list publication all agree on it. The office sits in the Enterprise Drive business area, just off Interstate 80 in Auburn, in the Sierra foothills.

The wrong address, and why it is on this page at all. The only California-specific “guide” to this office that ranks in search results — a page on a botanicals blog — prints the address as “12055 High Street, Auburn, CA 95603.” No other source corroborates that address, and every official and independent listing gives Enterprise Drive. Whether 12055 High Street was ever the DMV’s address could not be verified, and this page does not claim it was. What is verifiable is that the High Street address is wrong now: do not drive to High Street for a DMV visit. If your maps app offers more than one “Auburn DMV” pin, pick the one at 11722 Enterprise Dr. The same ranking page also prints flat “8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday” hours and misses the 9:00 am Wednesday open entirely — another reason to check the hours table in section 3 rather than a competitor’s summary.

Parking. No source describes the office’s parking arrangements — not the lot size, not whether it is free, not the accessible spaces — so this page prints no parking claim at all. Check signage on arrival, as the independent guides advise. What is verifiable is the transit picture, which is in section 11, and the simple fact that the office is a drive-to location for most of the foothill county: there is no verified bus stop at the office door, and this page does not claim one.

One more caution about maps: Auburn sits on Interstate 80, and the foothill towns up and down I-80 and State Route 49 — Colfax, Meadow Vista, Weimar, Foresthill — have no DMV office of their own. Colfax, in particular, has no DMV field office at all; Auburn is its nearest one. If you are driving in from one of those towns, the office to aim for is Enterprise Drive, and the office to check on the day is Auburn itself, which is open all five weekdays.

3Hours — five days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week

Auburn runs the DMV’s standard full-time pattern. The table below is the whole week, every week:

DayHours
Monday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tuesday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Wednesday9:00 am – 5:00 pm (late open)
Thursday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
SaturdayClosed
SundayClosed

These hours were read from the DMV’s own Auburn office page, which shows the week’s calendar day by day, and cross-checked against the DMV’s place data and dmvca.info, which lists Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm and Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. The Wednesday 9:00 am late open is the statewide pattern — the office opens an hour late on Wednesdays, just like the rest of the state. Roseville and Rocklin run the identical week, hour for hour, so the three Placer County offices open and close together; the difference between them is services, not hours.

Here is what the next two weeks actually look like, day by day, so nobody plans around a closed door:

November 13, 2026FridayOpen 8:00 am–5:00 pm
November 14, 2026SaturdayClosed

One closure to put in your diary. Wednesday, November 11, 2026, the office is closed for Veterans Day, a state holiday, and all California field offices close on state holidays — the DMV’s own Auburn page carries that notice. Because November 11 is a Wednesday, the week of November 9–13 loses one of its five open days: the office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday that week, and closed on the Wednesday. Do not plan a November 11 visit, and do not assume the office is open that Wednesday just because it is a Wednesday. The office is closed on every state holiday, so if your visit falls on one, check the DMV holiday schedule first rather than driving to a locked door. Note also that written/knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 pm anywhere in California, so a late-afternoon arrival cannot take the written test that day.

One more honesty note: the DMV publishes live wait times for every field office, including Auburn, on its current-field-office-wait-times page — but those are a live snapshot, not a stable figure, and they change through the day. This page therefore prints no wait-time number for Auburn. Any site that quotes one for this office as a fixed fact is guessing.

4Services at this office

The DMV’s Auburn office page lists eight service groups. The table below is that list, with a plain-English note on what each one actually covers at the counter — and two conspicuous absences:

ServiceWhat it covers here
Licensing servicesFirst licenses, license renewals that require an in-person visit, and license changes
TestingBehind-the-wheel drive test, motorcycle skills test, written knowledge test — see section 6
Title transfersTransferring a vehicle title after a sale, gift, or inheritance
RegistrationFirst registrations and registration transactions that need the counter
Plates, permits & placardsLicense plates, permits, and disabled placards
Replace lost / stolen / damagedReplacements that require an in-person visit
RecordsDriver and vehicle record requests that need the counter (most record requests can be done online instead)
Miscellaneous original documentsOriginal documents the DMV issues in person
Self Service TerminalsNot offered at this office — Auburn has no DMV Now kiosk; see section 8

REAL ID is offered here: a first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit, and this office handles it (section 7). Payments accepted at the office are cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order, per the DMV’s own office page. The office phone is the statewide DMV number, 1-800-777-0133 — no office-direct number is published for Auburn; the only phone numbers on the DMV’s Auburn page belong to nearby DMV partners, not to the field office itself. The automated line runs 24 hours a day; representatives are available Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What is not on the list matters as much as what is. Routine registration renewals, routine license and ID renewals, most record requests, and most replacement licenses are not counter transactions at all (section 1). And unlike its two sister offices in the county, Auburn has no kiosk to send you to instead — the DMV’s own locator lists Auburn as a plain “DMV Field Office,” while Roseville, Rocklin, and Folsom carry a “Kiosk Available” tag, and the Auburn office page carries no “This office has a self-serve kiosk” line at all. If your errand is a renewal or a record, the answer is dmv.ca.gov, a kiosk at another office, the AAA Auburn Branch, or mail — not a drive to Enterprise Drive. One listing to ignore: a third-party offices map lists a “DMV Now Auburn” kiosk at 2480 Grass Valley Highway. That is the AAA Auburn Branch’s address, and the DMV’s own locator lists the AAA branch as a DMV partner only, with no kiosk. Do not go there looking for a kiosk machine.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

Book online at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. The DMV runs two appointment types: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test. Booking is free — if any website asks you to pay to book a DMV appointment, it is not the DMV.

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services. The DMV offers three ways into an office: start your application online first (which shortens the visit), join the same-day queue, or book a future date. The same-day path is Get in Line, the DMV’s electronic check-in: you join the office’s line online for that day when you did not book ahead. Get in Line is still live — it was never discontinued, and the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. The queue hours, verified live on November 4, 2026 through the DMV’s own Service Advisor flow, are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 7:50 am–4:00 pm, and Wednesday 8:50 am–4:00 pm — the queue opens ten minutes before the office does. Older figures of 9:00 am–4:00 pm (Wednesdays 10:00 am) still circulate on third-party pages and on some of our own older pages; they are stale. Walk-ins are served through Get in Line, with appointment holders served first, so expect to wait longer without a booked appointment, and arrive early if you check in same-day. The one hard rule is the drive test: behind-the-wheel driving tests always require an appointment — there is no walk-in drive test.

Three practical tips that hold statewide and apply here. First, book as early as you can: Auburn is the foothill county’s full-time office, so its appointment book carries the foothill towns’ traffic as well as Auburn’s own, and drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in the system. Checking back for cancellations is the standard way people pull a date forward. Second, do not book an appointment for a transaction that has no counter service: the DMV says appointments should not be made for registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record requests, or replacement licenses — those are online, kiosk, partner, or mail transactions, and booking one wastes one of the office’s slots and your own morning. Third, bring the right documents the first time — section 11 has the per-transaction checklists — because a missing document is the most common reason a visit ends in a second trip, and in the foothills a second trip can mean another drive down Interstate 80 or State Route 49. To change an appointment, use the DMV’s View/Cancel page: there is no reschedule button — you cancel the old appointment and book a new one, using your first name, last name, and telephone number. This page states no Auburn-specific wait time because none is published as a stable figure; the “best time” advice here is a statewide pattern, not a measured figure for this office.

6Driving tests at Auburn: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — and the CDL gap

Auburn is a test office, but a limited one. The office offers three test types:

TestAppointment?Notes
Behind-the-wheel drive testYes — appointment requiredThe standard license road test; bring a valid instruction permit, proof of insurance, the vehicle’s registration, and a safe, roadworthy vehicle
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered on site; the office is tagged for the motorcycle test on the independent location guide, and the DMV lists “Testing” among its services
Written knowledge testWalk-in or appointmentNot offered after 4:30 pm, anywhere in California
CDL road test—Not offered at Auburn. The office is tagged “No CDL test” on the independent location guide, and neither Roseville nor Rocklin offers it either. The nearest CDL test site to the foothill corridor is Yuba City (section 10).

What to bring for the behind-the-wheel test. A valid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, and a vehicle that is safe and roadworthy. Before the drive begins, the examiner runs a pre-drive check of the vehicle’s controls: hand signals, lighting controls, windshield wipers, hazard lights, the defroster, gears, and the parking brake. If any of those do not work, the test does not start — check them the day before, not in the office car park. The drive itself is typically a short on-road route around the office, usually in the region of 10–20 minutes of driving statewide, though that is a statewide typical figure, not a measured Auburn route time; this page does not publish an Auburn test route, because the DMV does not publish one.

Book early — the foothill book fills fast. Because Auburn is the only full-time DMV in the Placer County foothills, its test appointments carry the traffic of Auburn, Colfax, Meadow Vista, Weimar, and the rest of the I-80 and State Route 49 corridor, and a missed or failed test costs more time here than it does in a city with five offices. If you fail a test, there is a waiting period before you can retake it — check the current retake rule on dmv.ca.gov before you rebook, because this page does not print a retake interval that it has not re-verified. You can take your driving test at any California field office, not only the one nearest your home, which is exactly why the Auburn-versus-Rocklin-versus-Roseville choice matters: if Auburn’s next test slot is weeks out, check whether Rocklin or Roseville has an earlier one — both offer the same three test types, and both are a short drive down the hill.

7REAL ID at Auburn

Yes — this office issues REAL ID. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit: it cannot be done online or at a kiosk. You will need proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency — originals only, no photocopies. Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit, because the acceptable documents have specific rules (for example, which residency documents count and how recent they must be), and this page does not improvise that list. Start the application online first if you can — it shortens the counter visit.

The context: REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025, so a standard license no longer gets you through a TSA checkpoint for a domestic flight — you need a REAL ID, a passport, or another TSA-accepted document. A REAL ID is not required to drive, and it is not required for a standard license renewal; it is only required if you want your license to double as federal identification. If your only goal is to keep driving, a standard renewal is enough. If you fly domestically and do not carry a passport, the REAL ID visit is worth the trip. Book it as a field-office appointment — a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip, because the document check at the counter takes longer than a simple renewal — bring the documents above, and allow extra time. Note that the AAA Auburn Branch cannot do REAL ID: licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, and tests are field-office-only, and the AAA branch handles vehicle paperwork, not people’s licenses.

8No kiosk at Auburn — the AAA branch, the nearest kiosks, and how to skip the trip

Most Auburn DMV errands never need a counter or an appointment, and in the foothills that matters more than it does in the valley, because the nearest alternative office is a drive down the hill. Here are the alternatives, in the order most people should try them:

OptionWhereGood forWatch out for

Check the DMV kiosk finder on dmv.ca.gov before driving anywhere for a kiosk.
AAA Auburn Branch (DMV partner)2480 Grass Valley Hwy, Auburn, CA 95603 — phone 530-886-2500Vehicle registration renewal, replacement registration certificates and stickers, temporary operating permits, VIN verification for out-of-state transfers, replacement title, out-of-state title transfer, private-party ownership transfer, disabled-plate applications, replacement plates, personalized-plate applications, one-day moving permitsMembers only. DMV hours Mon–Fri 9:00 am–5:30 pm, Sat 9:00 am–4:30 pm. Cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test. A credit-card fee of up to 1.72% applies on AAA card payments.
Other DMV business partnersAuburn area, via the DMV’s partner finderRegistration-type services at licensed partnersPartners handle vehicle paperwork, not licenses or tests. Examples listed on the DMV locator include Sierra Smog & Auto Repair (402 Grass Valley Hwy) and Back To Life Auto (690 Lincoln Blvd, Lincoln). Verify the service and the hours with the partner before driving there.

The nearest kiosks, specifically. The closest DMV Now kiosks to Auburn are the ones inside the Roseville field office (7200 Galilee Rd) and the Rocklin field office (5245 South Grove) — both carry the DMV’s “Kiosk Available” tag — and the Folsom field office (323 E Bidwell St, Ste A). Retail kiosks in the wider area include FoodMaxx in North Highlands (7477 Watt Ave), Safeway Elkhorn (5345 Elkhorn Blvd), and Safeway Fair Oaks (5450 Dewey Dr). Kiosk hours and services change, so check the DMV’s kiosk finder before you drive: a kiosk prints registration stickers and handles renewals and records, but it cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test.

The Saturday question, answered properly. The Auburn field office is closed on Saturdays, and so are Roseville and Rocklin. The one Saturday DMV option in Auburn itself is the AAA Auburn Branch, which runs its DMV services on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm — for members only, and for vehicle paperwork only. If your Saturday errand is a registration renewal, a replacement sticker, or a title transfer, the AAA branch is the answer. If it is a license, a REAL ID, or a test, there is no Saturday option in Auburn: book a weekday appointment at the field office instead.

The honest summary: for a renewal or a record in the foothills, the internet is your kiosk, the AAA branch is your Saturday counter, and Roseville or Rocklin is your nearest kiosk machine. The DMV’s own appointments page says those transactions must be done online, at a kiosk, with a business partner, or by mail — and in Auburn, online, the AAA branch, and the kiosks down the hill are the three channels that actually exist. Do the transaction from home or from the AAA branch, and save the Enterprise Drive trip — and one of the office’s five open days — for the things that genuinely need a person: a first REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer.

9Placer County guide: Auburn, Roseville, or Rocklin — which office, which town

Here is the correction that matters most on this page. A common claim on other sites is that Auburn is “the only DMV field office in Placer County.” That is wrong. Placer County has three DMV field offices, all full-time, all on the same hours, and all verified on dmv.ca.gov on November 4, 2026. What is true, and what this page states instead, is that Auburn is the county’s county-seat office and its foothill office, Roseville is the county’s largest-city office, and Rocklin is the county’s third office, between the two. The table below is the whole county at a glance:

Which office for which town. The foothill half of the county — Auburn itself, Colfax, Meadow Vista, Weimar, and the I-80 and State Route 49 corridor towns — uses Auburn; it is the only full-time office in the foothills, and Colfax has no DMV field office of its own, so Auburn is its nearest one. The valley half — Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, and the fast-growing south of the county — uses Roseville or Rocklin, which are minutes apart from each other and both carry kiosks. The practical rule is simple: if you live in the foothills, Auburn is your office; if you live in the south of the county, Roseville or Rocklin is closer and has a kiosk; and if Auburn’s appointment book is full, check Rocklin first — it is the closest office to Auburn, about 11.5 miles away in a straight line, with the same hours and the same test types, plus a kiosk. Grass Valley, over the county line in Nevada County, is the other foothill option: it is about 28 miles north of Auburn on State Route 49, about 40 minutes’ drive, but it is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only, so on a Tuesday or Thursday it is closed and Auburn is the foothill county’s open office instead.

The Auburn-versus-Rocklin-versus-Roseville choice, honestly. For most transactions there is no “better” office here — there is only the office with the earlier appointment, or the office with the kiosk. All three offer the same eight service groups, the same three test types, REAL ID, and the same hours. The differences are two: Auburn has no kiosk, and Roseville and Rocklin do; and Auburn is the foothill office, while Roseville and Rocklin are the valley offices. Pick by the service first — if you need a kiosk, go to Rocklin or Roseville — then by the appointment book, then by the drive. And one line for the county-line question: the DMV office pages themselves do not print a county name, so if a maps app ever shows you a “Placer County DMV” that is not one of these three, check the street address against the table above before you drive.

10If Auburn is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

For almost every Placer County resident, the honest answer is “Auburn, Rocklin, or Roseville — whichever has the earlier appointment.” The out-of-county offices below are fallbacks for when all three county offices are booked, or for a CDL test, and only one of them is genuinely practical for a CDL. Distances are straight-line distances from Auburn as published by the independent location guide, labelled as such — road distances are longer:

Roseville DMV7200 Galilee Rd, Roseville, CA 9567814.9 miles straight-lineMon–Fri, same as AuburnIn-county. The county’s largest-city office, with a kiosk, same test types, no CDL test.
Folsom DMV323 E Bidwell St (Ste A), Folsom, CA 95630About 16.7 miles straight-line (approximate)Mon–FriSacramento County, just over the line. Full-time, with a kiosk. A practical fallback when the three Placer offices are booked.
Placerville DMV2919 Cold Springs Rd, Placerville, CAAbout 18.4 miles straight-line (approximate)Mon–FriEl Dorado County seat, east on US-50. Full-time. Note: one aggregator still prints stale 10:00 am–5:00 pm hours for Placerville — the official hours are 8:00 am–5:00 pm, El Dorado County’s other office is the South Lake Tahoe DMV on the South Shore, the basin’s California office at 6,237 feet, full-time with the same hours and no kiosk either.
Grass Valley DMV890 Sutton Way, Grass Valley, CAAbout 28 miles driving via SR-49Mon/Wed/Fri onlyNevada County, north on State Route 49, about 40 minutes. A part-time office — closed Tuesdays and Thursdays, when Auburn is the foothill answer instead. No kiosk; no CDL test.
Carmichael DMV5209 North Ave, Carmichael, CAAbout 24.0 miles straight-line (approximate)Mon–FriSacramento County. Full-time. Further than Folsom and no closer than Roseville for most Placer readers; listed for completeness.
Yuba City DMV1570 Poole Blvd, Yuba City, CANot stated — unverified from AuburnMon–FriThe nearest CDL test site to the foothill corridor, about 40 miles west of Grass Valley via SR-20. Go here for a CDL road test — not to Auburn, Rocklin, Roseville, or Truckee, none of which offers one.

The pattern is clear: inside Placer County, the choice is Auburn, Rocklin, or Roseville, and the only reason to leave the county is a CDL test or a fully booked week. Sacramento’s offices are a drive nobody in Placer County needs to make for DMV business when Auburn, Rocklin, and Roseville are all closer — they are mentioned here once, to close the question, not as options. And one line for the state-line question: Nevada is next door, but a Nevada DMV office cannot do California business — a California license, REAL ID, or registration must be done at a California DMV.

11Best time to visit — what to bring — and the foothill drive

Best time. This page prints no Auburn-specific wait time, because none is published as a stable figure — the DMV’s own wait-times page is a live snapshot that changes through the day. What the independent location guide reports for this office is that early mornings (right at open) and mid-week afternoons are quietest, and the first and last week of the month, plus Mondays, are busiest — that is a statewide pattern, not a measured Auburn figure, and it is labelled as such. The practical advice is simpler: arrive right at opening, book an appointment rather than walking in, and do not plan a visit for a state holiday (section 3). Mondays are the busiest day at most offices, and Auburn’s book also carries the foothill towns’ traffic, so a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday appointment is usually the easier one to get.

What to bring — by transaction.

TransactionBring
First REAL IDProof of identity, proof of Social Security number, two proofs of California residency — originals only (check the DMV’s REAL ID document list first)
Behind-the-wheel testValid instruction permit, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, the vehicle’s registration, a safe and roadworthy vehicle (pre-drive check: hand signals, lights, wipers, hazards, defroster, gears, parking brake)
First licenseProof of identity, proof of residency, and your completed application; minors need the driver-education and permit steps finished first
Title transferThe signed title, a bill of sale if you have one, and identification; report the transfer promptly (the DMV’s notice-of-transfer step protects the seller)
Registration (first registration)Title or proof of ownership, proof of insurance, and identification; smog certification where required
Renewal or replacement (in person)Your renewal notice if it specifies an in-person visit, identification, and payment (cash, check, card, digital wallet, or money order)

Just moved to Placer County? Two deadlines, and they are different — do not mix them up. You have 20 days to register your vehicle in California (Vehicle Code §4152.5) and 10 days to get a California driver’s license (Vehicle Code §12505(c)), both counted from the date you establish residency. New residents who need both should book the Auburn office early in that window — on any weekday — and bring the out-of-state title and registration with them. Both can be started online at dmv.ca.gov before you visit.

Getting there without a car. There is no verified bus stop at the office door, and this page does not claim one. The verified transit option is Auburn Transit OnDemand, the city’s rideshare-style service, which runs anywhere within Auburn city limits — including Enterprise Drive — Monday to Friday 6:00 am–7:00 pm and Saturdays 8:00 am–5:00 pm, booked through the GO South Placer Spare app or by phone at 530-906-3171. The wider transit hub is Auburn Station (the Conheim Multimodal Station on Nevada Street), served by Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor, Placer County Transit, and Nevada County Connects; Placer County Transit Route 30 runs hourly Monday to Saturday between Auburn Station and Auburn Regional Park along the Highway 49 corridor, and Route 10 runs between Auburn Station and the Watt/I-80 light-rail station. If you are coming by transit, plan the last leg through OnDemand rather than assuming a fixed-route bus stops at the DMV.

Winter driving. Auburn sits in the Sierra foothills on Interstate 80, and winter storms bring snow to the foothills and chain controls to I-80 east of town. If your visit is in winter, check Caltrans QuickMap for current road conditions before you leave, and allow extra time. This is general advice, not a weather forecast: no specific closure or chain-control rule is stated here, because those change with conditions.

12Why this office matters: the county seat’s full-time office, and the address the internet gets wrong

Auburn is a Gold Rush-era city and the county seat, which is why the county’s courts, recorder, and other official county functions sit in the city alongside the DMV — and why the DMV office here carries the foothill half of the county’s traffic on its five open days. Gold was found in Auburn Ravine in May 1848, three years before Placer County was formed with Auburn as its seat, and the city has been the county’s administrative center ever since. For the foothill communities up Interstate 80 and State Route 49 — Colfax, Meadow Vista, Weimar, Foresthill, and the rest of the corridor — there is no other full-time DMV: Grass Valley, the next office north, is open three days a week, and the valley offices are a drive down the hill. Auburn is the foothill county’s weekday DMV, every weekday.

That is also why the errors about this office matter more than they would for a city office. The search results for “Auburn DMV” are polluted twice over: first by the other states’ Auburns — Alabama, New York, Washington, Indiana, Maine, Nebraska — which fill most of the top ten, and then by the one California-specific guide that does rank, which prints the wrong street address, misses the Wednesday 9:00 am open, and says nothing about the kiosk, the AAA branch, the three-office county, or the drive tests. A reader who follows that page drives to the wrong street on the wrong assumption. The fix is boring and it is the whole point of this page: the correct address, 11722 Enterprise Dr; the correct hours, Monday to Friday with a 9:00 am Wednesday open; the correct county picture, three offices, not one; and the correct kiosk answer, none here, nearest at Rocklin and Roseville. Check the address, check the day, book before you drive — and if your errand is a renewal, do not drive at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the Auburn DMV office?

11722 Enterprise Dr, Auburn, CA 95603, in the Enterprise Drive business area just off Interstate 80. Do not use the “12055 High Street” address printed by one ranking guide — it is wrong, and no official or independent source corroborates it.

What are the Auburn DMV hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, and Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays — including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day).

Is the Auburn DMV open on Saturday?

No. The Auburn field office is closed every Saturday and Sunday, and so are the Roseville and Rocklin field offices. The one Saturday DMV option in Auburn is the AAA Auburn Branch (2480 Grass Valley Hwy), which handles registration-type DMV services on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, for members only. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.

Do I need an appointment at the Auburn DMV?

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services; same-day check-in (Get in Line) is available, with the queue open 7:50 am–4:00 pm (Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm). The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Do not book an appointment for a registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record request, or replacement license — those have no counter service and must be done online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail.

Can I walk into the Auburn DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most services, through Get in Line, the DMV’s same-day electronic check-in — but expect to wait, because appointment holders are served first. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. Get in Line is still live; the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. This is a statewide pattern; no Auburn-specific wait time is published.

Does the Auburn DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel tests require an appointment, and knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm. It does NOT offer CDL road tests: Auburn is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither Roseville nor Rocklin offers one either. The nearest CDL test site to the foothill corridor is Yuba City (1570 Poole Blvd).

Can I get a REAL ID at the Auburn DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit. REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025. Book an appointment — a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip, because the document check takes longer than a simple renewal.

Is there a DMV kiosk in Auburn?

Not at the field office — the Auburn DMV has no self-service DMV Now kiosk, and it is the only one of Placer County’s three field offices without one. The nearest kiosks are at the Roseville field office (7200 Galilee Rd) and the Rocklin field office (5245 South Grove), the Folsom field office, and retail kiosks including FoodMaxx North Highlands and Safeway Elkhorn and Fair Oaks. Do not go to 2480 Grass Valley Hwy looking for a kiosk — that is the AAA Auburn Branch, a DMV partner, not a kiosk. For registration renewals and record requests, use dmv.ca.gov online services, a kiosk, the AAA branch, or mail instead of driving to the office.

What is the phone number for the Auburn DMV?

1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Auburn; the only phone numbers on the DMV’s Auburn page belong to nearby DMV partners. The automated system is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Is the Auburn DMV the only DMV in Placer County?

No. Placer County has three DMV field offices: Auburn (11722 Enterprise Dr, the county seat, full-time, no kiosk), Roseville (7200 Galilee Rd, full-time, with a kiosk), and Rocklin (5245 South Grove, full-time, with a kiosk). All three run the same hours and offer the same test types. Auburn is the county’s foothill office; Roseville and Rocklin serve the south of the county.

What is the closest DMV to Auburn if this office is closed or booked?

Rocklin, about 11.5 miles away in a straight line, with the same hours and test types plus a kiosk on site. Roseville is about 14.9 miles away in a straight line, also with a kiosk. Folsom is about 16.7 miles away, and Placerville about 18.4 miles. Distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer. If you need a CDL test, the nearest site is Yuba City (1570 Poole Blvd).

Can I renew my vehicle registration at the Auburn DMV?

You can, but you should not need to visit at all: registration renewals have no counter service and are handled online at dmv.ca.gov, at a DMV Now kiosk, with a DMV partner, or by mail. There is no kiosk at the Auburn office, so the practical options are online, the kiosks at Rocklin or Roseville, or the AAA Auburn Branch (2480 Grass Valley Hwy, members only, DMV services Mon–Fri 9:00 am–5:30 pm and Sat 9:00 am–4:30 pm).

Book Before You Drive to Auburn

Auburn is open five days a week, but its appointment book carries the whole foothill corridor — and its drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in Placer County. Check the day, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, do it online, at the AAA branch, or at a Rocklin or Roseville kiosk instead of driving to Enterprise Drive.
