South Lake Tahoe DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The only California DMV field office on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe — open five days a week at 6,237 feet, with behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written tests, and REAL ID, on Lake Tahoe Boulevard. It has no kiosk, and there is no CDL test here. But check the county picture before you book: this is NOT the county’s only office — Placerville, the county seat, is the second — and the Nevada DMV across the state line cannot do California business. TL;DR

  • Address: 3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 — on Lake Tahoe Boulevard (US 50) in the South Shore, Suite B. The Bank of America branch at the same street number is the landmark in the same plaza; the Safeway at 1020 Johnson Lane is the nearest large grocery store.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday, every week. This is a full-time office — one of two DMV field offices in El Dorado County.
  • This week: in the week of November 9–13, 2026, the office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday — and closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day, a state holiday when every California DMV field office is closed.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for South Lake Tahoe.
  • Appointments: recommended for faster service; behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Same-day check-in (Get in Line) runs 7:50 am–4:00 pm, Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm.
  • Kiosk here: no — this office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside, and no retail kiosk in South Lake Tahoe was verified. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Folsom field office, about 66.5 miles away in a straight line. A renewal trip here still works online, by mail, or through a partner — not at a kiosk.
  • No CDL test here: South Lake Tahoe does not offer CDL road tests. Neither does Truckee or Placerville. The nearest CDL test site is the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center (2528 Evergreen Ave, West Sacramento), about 88.6 miles away in a straight line.
  • The county picture: El Dorado County has TWO DMV field offices, not one — South Lake Tahoe (3344 B Lake Tahoe Blvd, full-time, no kiosk) and Placerville (2919 Cold Springs Rd, the county-seat office, full-time, no kiosk). Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Diamond Springs, Pollock Pines, Georgetown, Cool, and Shingle Springs have no DMV office at all; the DMV’s office pages for all seven towns return a 404. Any office serves any Californian; pick by the service you need, not by the town line.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses get no counter service — use dmv.ca.gov online services, a partner, or mail. There is no kiosk in this building to fall back on, so the online and partner channels matter more here than in a kiosk office.
  • Tests here: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle skills test, and the written knowledge test. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California.
  • Saturday option: there is none in the basin. The DMV office is closed on Saturdays, there is no AAA branch in South Lake Tahoe, and the nearest AAA branch with DMV services is in Sparks, Nevada — whose DMV services are Nevada DMV services, not California. For California registration-type services on a Saturday, use dmv.ca.gov, the Folsom kiosk, or mail. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.
  • State line + winter: the Nevada DMV in Carson City (555 Wright Way, about 18.2 miles away in a straight line) is a different state’s agency — it cannot do California licenses or registration, and this office cannot do Nevada business. And in winter, US 50 over Echo Summit carries Caltrans chain controls: check Caltrans QuickMap before driving to Placerville or Truckee as an alternative.

3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
El Dorado County’s lake-basin office — full-time office (Mon–Fri) with drive tests and REAL ID, no kiosk, no CDL test

1The lake-basin office at 6,237 feet — and the county picture that matters most

If you live on the California side of Lake Tahoe’s South Shore, this is your DMV office — and it is the only California DMV field office on the South Shore, in the county’s largest city, at 6,237 feet above sea level, which is the first thing this page has to tell you, because the rest of the basin has nothing else on the California side. The field office at 3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a 9:00 am open on Wednesdays, and it handles the counter range the DMV lists for a field office: licensing, testing, title transfers, registration, plates, permits and placards, replacements, and records — eight service groups, one fewer than a kiosk office, because there is no self-service terminal here. South Lake Tahoe is the most populous city in El Dorado County — 21,330 people at the 2020 census, down from 21,403 in 2010, with a July 1, 2025 estimate of 21,115 — in a county of 191,185 people spread over 1,805 square miles, and it sits on the California–Nevada state line, on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada. The DMV office sits on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, which is US 50, the east–west highway that links the city with Sacramento to the west and Carson City, Nevada, to the east — and that is exactly why it carries the traffic it does: the basin’s California residents, the Nevada-side workers who live in California, and the new residents who move across the state line in either direction.

But the most important paragraph on this page is a verification, and it is the reason this page exists in its present form. The build note for this office asked whether South Lake Tahoe is also the “nearest office” answer for its whole county. That angle is not verified here, and the page must not claim it. El Dorado County has two DMV field offices, not one: South Lake Tahoe and Placerville, the county-seat office at 2919 Cold Springs Road, full-time, with the same hours. The DMV’s Placerville page returns a 200, checked on dmv.ca.gov on November 5, 2026 — so there is a second office, and it is the county seat’s. What the county does not have is a third office: the DMV’s field-office pages for every other El Dorado County town return a 404 — Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Diamond Springs, Pollock Pines, Georgetown, Cool, and Shingle Springs all 404, checked on dmv.ca.gov on November 5, 2026 — so there is no office hiding in a foothill town and no part-time Tuesday/Thursday office anywhere in the county. The honest county picture is a two-office split by geography: Placerville serves the western foothill half of the county — Placerville, Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Diamond Springs, Shingle Springs, Pollock Pines, Georgetown, Cool — and South Lake Tahoe serves the Lake Tahoe basin at the eastern end — South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Christmas Valley, Echo Lake, Kyburz. Any California DMV office serves any Californian — you are not tied to the one nearest your address — so the honest question is never “which office is mine” but “which office has what I need, on the day I can go.” That question is the subject of sections 9 and 10.

The second most important paragraph is about the trips you do not need to make. The DMV’s own appointments page states that the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions “must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” In South Lake Tahoe that list bites harder than it does in a kiosk office, because South Lake Tahoe has no kiosk to send you to: for a renewal or a record, the answer is dmv.ca.gov, a partner, or mail — not a wait in the counter line, and not a kiosk in this building. And it bites harder still because the nearest verified kiosk is the Folsom field office, about 66.5 miles away in a straight line: if you drive in from Meyers or Christmas Valley for a renewal that has no counter service, you have driven a mountain road for nothing. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, do not book a counter appointment at all; do it online or through a partner. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the office is the place — book it, and bring the documents in section 11.

Two more identity facts before you go anywhere. First, this office is in South Lake Tahoe, California, in El Dorado County — not in Nevada, and not on the Nevada side of the lake. The Nevada DMV in Carson City is a different state’s agency, and it cannot do California business; this office cannot do Nevada business either. Second, this page is an independent guide, not the DMV. We cannot book for you, we cannot see live slot availability, and we never charge for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below — address, hours, services, payments, nearby offices, tests, kiosk, transit — was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on November 5, 2026, and cross-checked against a second source. Where a fact could not be verified, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no wait-time minutes, no review numbers, no fee amounts, no parking description, and no test route appear anywhere below.

2Address — Lake Tahoe Boulevard, Suite B, on US 50

The South Lake Tahoe DMV office is at 3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. That address is confirmed three ways: the DMV’s own office page, which spells it “3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard”; the DMV’s own place data, which gives “3344 B, 3344 Lake Tahoe Blvd” and the coordinates 38.94541, −119.96937; and the independent dmvca.info location page, which shortens it to “3344 S Lake Tahoe Blvd, Suite B.” The “B” is the suite — Suite B — so if your map shows “3344 Lake Tahoe Blvd” with no suite letter, it is the same building. The office sits on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, which is US 50, the east–west highway through the South Shore, in the city’s commercial strip. The Bank of America branch at 3344 Lake Tahoe Boulevard shares the street number — a useful landmark in the same plaza — and the Safeway at 1020 Johnson Lane, open 24 hours, is the nearest large grocery store. Neither is a DMV partner; both are landmarks only.

One address warning matters here, because the trap is the state line, not the street. The Nevada DMV office in Carson City sits at 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89711, about 18.2 miles away in a straight line — closer than any California alternative except Truckee — and a map search for “DMV near South Lake Tahoe” will show it. It is a different state’s agency. It cannot issue a California license, register a California vehicle, or upgrade a California REAL ID, and this office cannot do Nevada business either. If you live in California and work in Stateline, Nevada, your DMV business is California business, and it belongs here or at Placerville, Truckee, or Folsom — not in Carson City. Check the state on the address before you drive: CA 96150 is this office; NV 89711 is the other one.

South Lake Tahoe’s place on the map is the rest of the address story. The city is the most populous city in El Dorado County and the only city in the county on the lake, at 6,237 feet above sea level, and it is one of only two incorporated cities in the whole county — Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. The county’s largest community is El Dorado Hills, which has no DMV office at all. US 50 runs west from the city over Echo Summit toward Placerville and Sacramento, and east toward Carson City and the Stateline casino corridor — Harrah’s, Bally’s, and the Tahoe Blue Event Center are minutes east on US 50 — which is why the office’s readers include the Nevada-side workers who live in California and the California residents who work in Nevada. Heavenly Mountain Resort rises above the city, and the town’s economy runs on skiing, summer lake tourism, and the casinos across the line. None of that changes the DMV errand — but it explains why this one office, in this one town, serves the whole California side of the South Shore, plus the new residents who move across the state line in either direction and need the 20-day and 10-day deadlines in section 11.

3Hours — five days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week

The South Lake Tahoe DMV office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays. That is the standard full-time pattern for a California DMV field office — five open days, a late Wednesday open, no weekend hours — and it is confirmed by two sources: the independent dmvca.info location page (verified June 5, 2026, closure checked October 31, 2026) and the DMV’s own place data, which lists the same hours. The office does not close for lunch; no lunch closure is listed for South Lake Tahoe, and the DMV’s known lunch-closure offices (Alturas, Fall River Mills, Garberville, Weaverville) are all far to the north. Do not plan a lunch-break visit on the assumption of a midday closure — and do not plan a Saturday visit at all.

SundayClosedEvery Sunday

The week this page publishes in has one closure that matters more than the rest, because it falls mid-week and it is easy to miss. Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day, a California state holiday, and every DMV field office in the state is closed that day — the banner on the DMV’s own South Lake Tahoe page says so in plain words: “All DMV field offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.” In the week of November 9–13, the office is therefore open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday only. The same applies to the alternatives in section 10: Truckee and Placerville are full-time offices, so in that week they are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday too — and the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center is closed Wednesday, November 11 as well. If your errand can wait, Thursday, November 12 is the better day than Monday, November 9, because Mondays are the busiest day statewide and this office carries the whole basin.

Two timing rules sit on top of the hours table, and both are statewide. First, written / knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California, so a permit test or a renewal knowledge test needs a morning or early-afternoon slot even though the office stays open until 5:00 pm. Second, the DMV publishes a live wait-times snapshot for every field office on its current wait-times page — appointment versus no-appointment, updated through the day — but it publishes no average and no minutes, so this page prints no wait-time figure for South Lake Tahoe. Check the live page on the morning you plan to go, and treat the first and last week of the month, and Mondays, as the busiest times: that is the statewide pattern the independent guides report, and it applies with extra force to a basin office, where there is no second office on the California side of the lake to spread the load.

4Services at this office

The DMV’s South Lake Tahoe page lists eight service groups, and the list is the whole story of what the counter does. The most useful thing about the list is what is not on it: there is no “Self Service Terminals” line, which is how the DMV’s own page tells you there is no kiosk in this building. Folsom, Roseville, Carmichael, and Sacramento carry a “Kiosk Available” tag on their pages; South Lake Tahoe does not. The eight groups are the standard full-service set, and they are the reason this office exists: everything a first-time applicant, a new resident, or a title transfer needs, on the South Shore, five days a week.

Three service facts deserve their own sentences because they decide whether your trip is necessary at all. First, REAL ID is offered here — a first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents, and section 7 has the list. Second, CDL road tests are not offered here: South Lake Tahoe is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither is Truckee or Placerville. The nearest CDL test site is the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center, about 88.6 miles away in a straight line — section 10 has the full picture. Third, the phone is the statewide number only: 1-800-777-0133. No office-direct number is published for South Lake Tahoe; the DMV’s South Lake Tahoe page lists no phone number of its own at all. The automated system is available 24 hours a day, and live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Payment at the counter follows the statewide list the DMV prints on every office page: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order. That is the full list for South Lake Tahoe, verified on the office page itself. Do not bring a payment method outside that list and expect the counter to take it. And one more service boundary: the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail. In South Lake Tahoe, with no kiosk in the building and the nearest verified kiosk 66.5 miles away in Folsom, that means dmv.ca.gov, a partner, or mail — and section 8 works through the options in order.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

An appointment at the South Lake Tahoe DMV is recommended for faster service but not required for most counter services — the same rule as every California field office. Book online at dmv.ca.gov/portal/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133, choose South Lake Tahoe as the office, and pick a time. Booking is free; the DMV charges no booking fee, and any site charging one is not the DMV. For driver’s license and ID card transactions, appointment slots only open after you submit the online application first — complete it, then return to book. Bring a printed or on-screen confirmation; appointment holders use a separate, faster line than walk-ins.

The exception is the one that matters most to test-takers: behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. There is no walk-in drive test at South Lake Tahoe or anywhere else in California. If you arrive without a drive-test appointment, you will be turned away for that test, and in a basin office that means a second drive from wherever you came from — Meyers, Christmas Valley, or across the lake from the North Shore. Book the drive test first, then plan the drive. The same appointment-only logic applies to any test that needs an examiner’s time; the written knowledge test is the more flexible one, but it still has the 4:30 pm cutoff, so a late-afternoon arrival for a permit test is a wasted trip even with an appointment.

For same-day visits without an appointment, the DMV’s Get in Line system is the way in. It is the same-day electronic check-in: join the queue before you arrive, get a text when your turn approaches, and wait somewhere other than the lobby. Two facts about Get in Line are worth stating plainly, because the internet still gets both wrong. First, Get in Line was never discontinued — it is still live, and the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. Second, the queue opens ten minutes before the office does: 7:50 am to 4:00 pm, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 8:50 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays, verified on this site’s own live Service Advisor flow on November 4, 2026. Appointment holders are still served first, so a walk-in should expect to wait, and should arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. The DMV stops admitting new walk-ins before closing so that everyone already in the queue can be served; do not arrive at 4:45 pm expecting to be seen.

Do not book an appointment for a transaction that has no counter service. Registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses cannot be booked at the counter at all — the scheduler will not offer you a slot for them, because the counter does not do them. Do those online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail. And if you already have an appointment and need to change it, the DMV’s View/Cancel flow asks for your first name, last name, and telephone number — there is no confirmation-number field, and no confirmation number is needed to look an appointment up. That correction, verified live on the DMV’s own flow, is worth knowing before you go hunting through old emails for a number that does not exist.

6Driving tests at South Lake Tahoe: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — and the CDL gap

South Lake Tahoe offers three test types, and the table below is the whole of it. Behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests are all available here; CDL road tests are not, and no other office in El Dorado County offers them either, because the county’s only other office is Placerville, which is also tagged “No CDL test.” The nearest CDL test site is the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center, and section 10 gives the distance and the address. For the three tests South Lake Tahoe does offer, the rules are the statewide ones, and they are worth reading before you book, because a failed preparation costs a mountain drive back.

TestAt South Lake Tahoe? What to know
Behind-the-wheel drive testYesAppointment-only. Bring a licensed driver and a safe, registered vehicle. The pre-drive safety check comes first.
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered at this office; book an appointment. Bring your own motorcycle and helmet.
Written knowledge testYesNot given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California. All questions come from the California Driver Handbook.
CDL road testNot offered at South Lake TahoeNearest CDL test site is the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center, 2528 Evergreen Ave, West Sacramento — about 88.6 miles away in a straight line. Appointment-only.

The behind-the-wheel test is the one most readers are booking, so it gets the detail. The DMV’s own test-preparation page describes two parts: the pre-drive safety check and the Driving Performance Evaluation. The pre-drive check is the part people fail without ever leaving the parking lot: the examiner checks that the vehicle is safe and legal — lights, signals, horn, brakes, tires, mirrors, seat belts, registration, and insurance — and that you know where the controls are. The on-road portion is a short drive, typically ten to fifteen minutes, on residential and major streets around the office: turning, lane changes, stopping, parking, and safe merging. There is no freeway portion and no parallel parking in California’s test. The DMV publishes no test route for South Lake Tahoe or any other office, so do not memorise streets from a forum post; prepare for the pre-drive check and the standard skills instead, and practise on the roads around Lake Tahoe Boulevard, US 50, and the South Shore neighbourhoods so the resort-town traffic and the mountain junctions feel familiar. In winter, practise on snow and ice too: this office sits at 6,237 feet, and a test-day snowstorm changes the drive completely.

Book early, because South Lake Tahoe carries the basin. South Tahoe High School, Mt. Tallac High School, and The Walden School are the town’s high schools, and Lake Tahoe Community College sits on the Route 50 corridor — so every teen permit and every first drive test on the California side of the South Shore funnels through this one office’s appointment book, along with every adult test in Meyers, Christmas Valley, Echo Lake, and Kyburz. If the week you want is full, the alternatives in section 10 are the answer, and Truckee at 29.2 miles in a straight line is the closest one. Three driving schools serve the basin for the six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training California requires for teens under 18: Tahoe Driving Academy, in South Lake Tahoe itself, which teaches new drivers and runs dedicated winter driving courses on snow and ice; Coastline Academy, with lessons in Stateline that practise on US-50 and into South Lake Tahoe, with DMV-certified instructors; and the independent instructors the Lake Tahoe Unified School District lists, including Mike Copeland, who works primarily out of El Dorado Hills but is in Tahoe occasionally. Online drivers-education courses are also available — DMV Edu, a California DMV-licensed online provider (License E4365), runs South Lake Tahoe drivers-ed courses. Any of these can do the mock test and the first-lesson permit validation; none can book your DMV test for you. Retake rules are not printed here because the DMV’s retake interval is a live rule, not a fixed fact on this page — check dmv.ca.gov before you rebook.

7REAL ID at South Lake Tahoe

Yes, you can get a REAL ID at the South Lake Tahoe DMV — and for most readers, this office is the only place on the California side of the South Shore to get one. A first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit: it cannot be done online, at a kiosk, or through a partner, and there is no AAA branch in South Lake Tahoe that could do it anyway. Bring originals, not copies: proof of identity (such as a valid U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate), proof of Social Security number (such as a Social Security card or a W-2), and two proofs of California residency (such as a utility bill, a bank statement, or a rental agreement showing your current address). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit, because a missing document means a second trip — and in a basin office, a second trip is a second mountain drive from wherever on the South Shore you came from.

REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights and entry to certain federal facilities began May 7, 2025. A standard California license or ID card no longer works for those purposes; a REAL ID, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted document does. If you already hold a REAL ID and are renewing, the renewal may be possible online unless your notice says an in-person visit is required — check the notice, not the habit. If you are upgrading for the first time, book an appointment rather than walking in: the document check takes longer than a simple renewal, and a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip if the queue closes before your turn. The office is open five days a week for this, and the appointment book is the way to be sure of a slot.

One county-shape point belongs in this section, because it is the reason the document list matters more here than in a city with three offices. South Lake Tahoe is the basin’s only California DMV field office, and the county’s other office is Placerville, about 48.3 miles away in a straight line over Echo Summit on US 50 — a drive that carries chain controls in winter. Truckee also offers REAL ID, 29.2 miles away in a straight line, but that drive is over mountain roads too. If your documents are wrong, the nearest place that can fix the problem is still this office, on its next open day. Check the list twice, bring originals, and book the appointment. And do not take the Nevada shortcut: the Nevada DMV in Carson City issues Nevada REAL IDs, not California ones, and a Nevada REAL ID does not upgrade a California license.

8No kiosk at South Lake Tahoe — no AAA branch either — and how to skip the trip

The South Lake Tahoe field office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside. The DMV’s own South Lake Tahoe page lists eight services and none of them is “Self Service Terminals,” and no retail kiosk is listed anywhere near South Lake Tahoe on that page either. That is the whole kiosk answer for this office. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Folsom field office (323 E Bidwell Street, Suite A, Folsom), about 66.5 miles away in a straight line. Roseville’s field office has a kiosk too, about 72.2 miles away in a straight line, and Carmichael’s as well, about 76.3 miles away — but Folsom is the nearest, so it is the recommendation for any kiosk errand. A kiosk prints registration stickers and handles renewals and records; it cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test. Statewide, the DMV runs 289 kiosks in retail and DMV locations, and kiosk card payments carry the DMV’s 1.95% service fee — a statewide rule, not a South Lake Tahoe figure.

There is also no AAA branch in South Lake Tahoe — no South Lake Tahoe AAA branch appears in AAA’s own branch results, and the DMV’s South Lake Tahoe page lists no partners at all, which is the contrast with the Sonora page, which lists the AAA Sonora Branch. The nearest AAA branch with DMV services that this brief could verify is the AAA Sparks Branch, 1360 Scheels Drive, Suite 120, Sparks, NV 89434, about 42.3 miles away in a straight line, with DMV hours Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, for members only — and it is a Nevada branch, so its DMV services are Nevada DMV services, not California. Do not drive to Sparks expecting California registration help. The honest Saturday answer for California registration-type services is: there is no Saturday option in the basin — use dmv.ca.gov, the Folsom kiosk, or mail. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here at all.

One more partner warning, because the internet makes this mistake easy. The DMV lists 7 DMV-authorized partners in El Dorado County — a county-wide count, not a South Lake Tahoe list. This page prints the count only, with attribution, and names no partner it did not verify one by one. If a directory lists a specific South Lake Tahoe registration business as a DMV partner, ask it for the address and check the DMV’s own partner lookup before you pay anyone. Partners can handle registration-type paperwork; they cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test. Those are field-office-only, which on the South Shore means this office.

9El Dorado County guide: which town, which office — the two-office county

For every town in El Dorado County, the answer to “which DMV do I go to” is one of two offices, and the table below says so town by town, because a reader in El Dorado Hills should not have to guess — and should not drive to the lake for a foothill errand, or to Placerville for a basin errand. There is no third office to compare against, no part-time office to check first, and no “nearest office” contest to run inside the county. The comparison that matters for an El Dorado County reader is South Lake Tahoe versus Placerville, and the deciding factor is geography: the basin or the foothills, with US 50 over Echo Summit between them. That comparison is section 10. This section is the county map: two offices, five days a week each, for every community below.

The state-line readers deserve a sentence here even though they are not El Dorado County readers, because they are the readers this office meets first when the wrong DMV is closer. Stateline, Nevada — the casino corridor minutes east on US 50 — is in Douglas County, Nevada. A Stateline resident’s Nevada license, Nevada registration, and Nevada REAL ID belong to the Nevada DMV in Carson City (555 Wright Way, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, appointment required), about 18.2 miles away in a straight line. A California resident who works in Stateline still does California DMV business at this office. The rule is the address on your license, not the address of your workplace: California business at a California office, Nevada business at a Nevada office, and the two never mix. The full alternatives table, with distances and the CDL and kiosk picture, is section 10.

One more county fact, because it explains the shape of the whole page. El Dorado County is 1,805 square miles with 191,185 people at the 2020 census, and it has only two incorporated cities — Placerville, the county seat, and South Lake Tahoe, the largest city. The county’s largest community is El Dorado Hills, which has no DMV office at all, so its residents drive to Placerville. The county is part of the Sacramento–Roseville–Arden-Arcade metropolitan area, which is why the Sacramento offices — Folsom, Roseville, Carmichael, Sacramento Broadway — matter as the kiosk and CDL fallbacks in section 10, even though they are 66 miles and more away in a straight line. The DMV’s own place data puts the South Lake Tahoe office at 38.94541, −119.96937 — the pin to check before you drive, not the pin of the Nevada DMV across the line.

10If South Lake Tahoe is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

South Lake Tahoe is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, state holidays, and the occasional renovation — and its appointment book can fill, because one office serves the whole California side of the South Shore. When that happens, the alternatives below are the answer, in order of distance. Read the hours column before you drive, and read the winter column too: the two closest California alternatives are both over mountain roads, and in a snowstorm the closest office on paper can be the slowest drive in practice. The first full-time alternative is Truckee, 29.2 miles away in a straight line. The nearest kiosk is Folsom, about 66.5 miles away in a straight line. The nearest CDL test site is the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center, about 88.6 miles away in a straight line. All distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer, and the mountain roads make the difference bigger than the numbers suggest — US 50 over Echo Summit climbs to more than 7,000 feet, and the drive to Truckee crosses the Sierra crest too.

Auburn DMV11722 Enterprise Dr, Auburn, CA 95603Further than TruckeeMon–Fri, same as South Lake TahoeListed because county guides name it; Truckee is closer, and Auburn has no kiosk and no CDL test

The winter lesson is the point of this section, and it is sharper here than on any foothill page. When the South Lake Tahoe office is closed — a state holiday, a renovation, a snow day — the California side of the South Shore has no DMV field office at all that day. The nearest open California office is Truckee, 29.2 miles away in a straight line, over mountain roads that carry chain controls in the same storm that closed your trip. Placerville is 48.3 miles away over Echo Summit, which carries chain controls of its own. That is why the Veterans Day table in section 3 matters, why the appointment book matters, and why the online and partner channels in section 8 matter: for a renewal or a record, you never need the office at all, and on a closure day, the office cannot help you anyway. Check Caltrans QuickMap before driving to any alternative in winter, carry chains, and if the pass is closed, wait for the next open day rather than driving around the lake to the North Shore.

For CDL drivers, the picture is simpler and longer. South Lake Tahoe does not offer CDL road tests, and neither does Truckee, Placerville, or Auburn — all four are tagged “No CDL test.” The DMV’s West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center at 2528 Evergreen Avenue is the nearest CDL test site, about 88.6 miles from South Lake Tahoe in a straight line, open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 7:00 am to 4:00 pm and Wednesdays 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed Saturdays and Sundays and closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day. It is a CDL-only facility: testing, records, and original-document requests, not a full-service office. Book the CDL test by appointment — CDL skills tests are appointment-only — and do not drive to West Sacramento expecting a walk-in test.

11Best time to visit — what to bring — and getting there without a car

No South Lake Tahoe-specific wait-time figure is published, and this page prints none. The DMV’s wait-times page is a live snapshot, not an average, and no source publishes a minutes figure for this office. What the independent guides report is a statewide pattern, and it is labelled as one: early mornings, right at opening, and mid-week afternoons are quietest; the first and last week of the month, plus Mondays, are busiest. That pattern bites harder in a basin office, where the whole California side of the South Shore’s first-of-the-month renewals and Monday appointments land on the same book, and where a ski-weekend crowd can fill the town on top of it. If you can choose, pick a Tuesday or Thursday mid-morning, and avoid the first and last week of the month. If you cannot choose, book the appointment and arrive at opening — the appointment line moves first, and the walk-in queue behind it does not.

New residents get their own paragraph, because the deadlines are the ones the internet reverses — and because the state line makes them bite twice here. If you move to California, vehicle registration is due within 20 days (California Vehicle Code section 4152.5) and a California driver’s license is due within 10 days (Vehicle Code section 12505(c)). The numbers are not interchangeable: twenty days for the car, ten days for the license. A new resident who needs both should book the license visit first, because the ten-day clock is the shorter one, and bring the out-of-state license, proof of identity, proof of residency, and the vehicle’s title and registration. South Lake Tahoe is the office for that errand for the whole California side of the basin — and the only office for it on the South Shore — so a new resident in Meyers or Christmas Valley books here, not in a town that has no office. And the reverse move has its own clock: if you move from California to Nevada, Nevada requires a Nevada license within 30 days of becoming a resident — check the Nevada DMV’s own new-resident rules, because this page is a California guide and the Nevada number is Nevada’s to state. Do not mix the two states’ deadlines, and do not mix the two states’ offices.

Getting there without a car is possible, and this is the one office page in the track where the bus stop is named for the DMV itself. Tahoe Transportation District Route 50, the “South Shore Daily,” runs South Y Transit Center to Stateline Transit Center along US 50 and Lake Tahoe Boulevard — the DMV office’s own street — and the westbound route has a stop signed “US 50/Fremont St (Across From DMV)”. The eastbound route has 27 stops and the westbound route 18 stops, with daily service under the Winter 2026 schedule that took effect Sunday, January 4, 2026, and Route 55 also runs the corridor. The Lake Tahoe Community College Mobility Hub is a stop on the same route, so students can ride the same bus. El Dorado Transit runs service between South Lake Tahoe, Placerville, and Sacramento — the bus link between the county’s two DMV offices — so a reader who cannot drive to Placerville can check El Dorado Transit’s schedules for the South Lake Tahoe to Placerville run. Check the transit schedules for the day you travel; do not assume a route runs at the hour you need, because the schedules change by season. Drivers have the easier trip in summer and the harder one in winter: US 50 is the east–west highway linking South Lake Tahoe with Sacramento and Carson City, and in winter Caltrans chain controls on US 50 over Echo Summit can delay or close the pass — check Caltrans QuickMap before driving, carry chains, and allow extra time for the mountain drive to any alternative office.

12Why this office matters: the basin’s only California DMV, and the errors the internet makes about it

South Lake Tahoe is the most populous city in El Dorado County and the only city in the county on the lake, and its DMV office is the only California DMV field office on the South Shore — the two facts are the same fact, and they are why this page exists. The city had 21,330 people at the 2020 census and the county had 191,185, and the office serves all of the basin’s California residents, plus the Nevada-side workers who live in California and the new residents who move across the state line in either direction. The city sits at 6,237 feet above sea level on the California–Nevada border, in the Sierra Nevada, and US 50 links it west to Sacramento and east to Carson City and the Stateline casino corridor. That geography is not the DMV errand — but it is the reason the office is where it is, why there is no other California office on the South Shore, and why the winter drive to any alternative is a mountain drive.

That is also why the errors about this office matter more than they would for a small-town office. The search results for “South Lake Tahoe DMV” mislead in four quiet ways. First, the “only office in the county” assumption: a reader who assumes one county means one office will never check Placerville, the county-seat office, which is the second office and the right one for any foothill errand. Second, the Nevada-DMV confusion: a map search for “DMV near South Lake Tahoe” shows the Nevada DMV in Carson City, closer than any California alternative except Truckee, and a reader who follows that pin will be turned away for California business. Third, the “nearby options are Placerville and Auburn” omission: one county driving guide names Placerville and Auburn as the nearby options and leaves out Truckee entirely, even though Truckee is the closest California office at 29.2 miles in a straight line. Fourth, the Suite-B address: aggregators that print “3344 S Lake Tahoe Blvd” with no suite letter can send a reader to the wrong door in a plaza that shares its street number with a bank. The fix is boring and it is the whole point of this page: the correct address, 3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard, Suite B; the correct hours, Monday to Friday with a 9:00 am Wednesday open; the correct county picture, two offices, not one and not three; the correct kiosk answer, no, with Folsom as the nearest; the correct Saturday answer, closed, with no Saturday option in the basin; and the correct state-line answer, California business at a California office, Nevada business at a Nevada office. Check the address, check the day, check the state, book before you drive — and if your errand is a renewal, do it online or at the Folsom kiosk and do not wait in the counter line at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the South Lake Tahoe DMV office?

3344 B Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150, on Lake Tahoe Boulevard (US 50) in the South Shore, Suite B. The Bank of America branch at the same street number is the landmark in the same plaza. Do not confuse it with the Nevada DMV in Carson City — a different state’s agency, about 18.2 miles away in a straight line.

What are the South Lake Tahoe DMV hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, and Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays — including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day).

Is the South Lake Tahoe DMV open on Saturday?

No. The South Lake Tahoe field office is closed every Saturday and Sunday. There is no Saturday DMV option in the basin: there is no AAA branch in South Lake Tahoe, and the nearest AAA branch with DMV services is in Sparks, Nevada — whose DMV services are Nevada DMV services, not California. For California registration-type services on a Saturday, use dmv.ca.gov, the Folsom kiosk, or mail. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.

Do I need an appointment at the South Lake Tahoe DMV?

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services; same-day check-in (Get in Line) is available, with the queue open 7:50 am–4:00 pm (Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm). The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Do not book an appointment for a registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record request, or replacement license — those have no counter service and must be done online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail.

Can I walk into the South Lake Tahoe DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most services, through Get in Line, the DMV’s same-day electronic check-in — but expect to wait, because appointment holders are served first. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. Get in Line is still live; the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. This is a statewide pattern; no South Lake Tahoe-specific wait time is published.

Does the South Lake Tahoe DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel tests require an appointment, and knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm. It does NOT offer CDL road tests: South Lake Tahoe is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither Truckee, Placerville, nor Auburn offers one either. The nearest CDL test site is the West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center (2528 Evergreen Ave, West Sacramento), about 88.6 miles away in a straight line. No test route is published for this office — the DMV does not publish routes — so prepare for the pre-drive check and the standard skills (turning, lane changes, parking, safe merging) instead of memorizing streets.

Can I get a REAL ID at the South Lake Tahoe DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit. REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025. Book an appointment — a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip, because the document check takes longer than a simple renewal. There is no AAA branch in South Lake Tahoe that could do REAL ID, and the Nevada DMV in Carson City issues Nevada REAL IDs, not California ones.

Is there a DMV kiosk at the South Lake Tahoe DMV?

No — the South Lake Tahoe field office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside, and no retail kiosk in South Lake Tahoe was verified. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Folsom field office (323 E Bidwell St Ste A, Folsom), about 66.5 miles away in a straight line. Roseville’s field office has a kiosk too, about 72.2 miles away, and Carmichael’s as well, about 76.3 miles away — but Folsom is the nearest. A kiosk cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test.

What is the phone number for the South Lake Tahoe DMV?

1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for South Lake Tahoe; the DMV’s South Lake Tahoe page lists no phone number of its own at all. The automated system is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Is the South Lake Tahoe DMV the only DMV in El Dorado County?

No. El Dorado County has two DMV field offices: South Lake Tahoe (3344 B Lake Tahoe Blvd) and Placerville (2919 Cold Springs Rd), the county-seat office, full-time with the same hours. Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Diamond Springs, Pollock Pines, Georgetown, Cool, and Shingle Springs have no DMV office at all — the DMV’s office pages for all seven towns return a 404, checked November 5, 2026. South Lake Tahoe serves the lake basin; Placerville serves the western foothill half of the county.

What is the closest DMV to South Lake Tahoe if this office is closed or booked?

Truckee, 29.2 miles away in a straight line, with the same hours and the same test types — check the mountain drive in winter. Placerville is about 48.3 miles away in a straight line over Echo Summit on US 50. Folsom is about 66.5 miles away and has the nearest verified kiosk. The West Sacramento Commercial Drive Test Center is about 88.6 miles away and is the nearest CDL test site. Distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer. The Nevada DMV in Carson City is about 18.2 miles away but is a different state’s agency and cannot do California business.

Can I renew my vehicle registration at the South Lake Tahoe DMV?

You can, but you should not need a counter visit at all: registration renewals have no counter service and are handled online at dmv.ca.gov, at a DMV Now kiosk, with a DMV partner, or by mail. In South Lake Tahoe there is no kiosk in the office, so use dmv.ca.gov, the Folsom field office kiosk, or one of the 7 DMV-authorized partners across El Dorado County (check the DMV’s partner lookup for the nearest one).

Book Before You Drive to South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe is open five days a week, but it is the only California DMV office on the South Shore — and its drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in the basin. Check the day, check the state line, check the mountain weather, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, use dmv.ca.gov, the Folsom kiosk, or a partner instead of waiting in the counter line.
