Merced DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide
The full-service DMV field office for Merced, Atwater, Winton, Livingston, and the rest of Merced County — 1313 W 12th Street, open Monday to Friday with a Wednesday 9:00 am start, knowledge and behind-the-wheel tests, REAL ID, and a self-service kiosk on site. It is closed every Saturday and Sunday, it is closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day, and it is the county’s only full-service office — Los Banos, the only other field office in the county, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Renewals, records, and replacement licenses get no counter service here. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.
TL;DR
- Address: 1313 W 12th Street, Merced, CA 95340 — in Merced County, the county seat. The address is confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page, read live on November 8, 2026. The top-ranking guide on Google prints a different street address, 744 W 16th Street — that is wrong, and a reader who follows it drives to the wrong street; see section 15.
- Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed Saturday and Sunday. There is no Saturday opening at Merced and no 7:00 am Wednesday early opening — pages that claim either are wrong.
- This week (November 9–13, 2026): open Monday November 9, Tuesday November 10, Thursday November 12, and Friday November 13. Closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day — the office’s own dated calendar shows it, and the DMV’s own banner says all California field offices are closed that day.
- Phone: 1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Merced; no local number appears on the official Merced page at all. A top-ranking guide prints a (209) number for the office — it is invented, not the DMV’s; see section 15.
- Appointments: book on dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. An office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are two different appointment types in the same scheduler — pick the right one. The DMV also offers Get in Line, its same-day virtual queue, started from home — and Merced customers do use it. No Merced-specific walk-in policy is published, so do not count on walking in for a drive test.
- Kiosk: yes — this office has a self-service kiosk on site. The official page carries the kiosk banner and lists “Self Service Terminals” as a service. It is the only DMV kiosk in Merced or Atwater: no grocery-store or retail kiosk is listed for either city on dmv.ca.gov, so the nearest retail kiosks are Safeway in Turlock (open 24 hours) and the two grocery kiosks in Modesto.
- REAL ID: yes, in person at this office. A top-ranking guide claims four times that Merced “does not handle Real ID upgrades in-person” and sends readers to Fresno or Sacramento — that is false. Merced is a full-service field office; start the application online, then visit with the original documents.
- Do not come here for: registration renewal, routine license or ID renewal, driver and vehicle records, or a replacement driver’s license — the DMV gives those transactions no counter service. Do them online, at the kiosk inside this office, with a Merced business partner, or by mail.
- Do not drive to Los Banos on the wrong day: Los Banos, the only other field office in Merced County, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm — closed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It reopened October 30, 2025 after a mold-remediation closure. See section 11.
- Nearest alternatives: Turlock (825 E Monte Vista Avenue, about 24 straight-line miles) and Madera (1206 Maple Street, about 33 straight-line miles) are full-service offices with kiosks on site; Modesto (124 Burney Street, about 37 straight-line miles) is the same. Atwater, Winton, Livingston, Gustine, Dos Palos, and Chowchilla have no DMV field office of their own — Merced is theirs.
1The office at a glance: Merced County’s county-seat office
Merced is the county seat of Merced County — 86,333 people at the 2020 census, up from 78,958 in 2010, and an estimated 99,724 by July 1, 2025, so the city is approaching 100,000 residents — and its DMV field office at 1313 W 12th Street is the default office for that whole population centre, plus the neighbouring towns of Atwater, Winton, Livingston, Gustine, Dos Palos, and Chowchilla, which have no field office of their own. It is a full-service field office, not a kiosk-only site, not a partner storefront, and not a limited-service outpost: the DMV’s own page lists nine service categories for it, from licensing and testing to title transfers, registration, plates, replacements, records, miscellaneous original documents, and Self Service Terminals. And it is the county-seat office, which matters: Merced County is 281,202 people at the 2020 census, and this office — with a kiosk on site, where Los Banos has none — is the only full-service office in the county. The two offices serve different halves of the same county, and the kiosk and the Los Banos part-time schedule are the practical differences between them.
Merced sits in the San Joaquin Valley on Highway 99, the valley’s main north–south route, with Highway 140 running east–west through the city. The city is named after the Merced River, and it is the county seat of a farming county that has grown into a university town: UC Merced, the tenth University of California campus, opened in 2005 northeast of the city limits and enrolled 9,647 students in fall 2026, an all-time record. Merced College, the community college, sits in town as well. Those two campuses are the reason this office’s demand includes a steady student and newcomer flow on top of ordinary resident demand, and the reason the first-license, international-student, and mover questions in the FAQ section matter here more than at most offices. The UC Merced International Students & Scholars office hands new international students a driver’s license guide that points at this exact office — 1313 W 12th Street — and advises them to wait at least 10 days after arriving in the United States and checking in with their international office before applying, so the government databases update.
Three facts decide whether a trip to this office succeeds or wastes a morning, and they belong at the top of any Merced visit plan. First, Wednesday opens at 9:00 am, not 8:00 am — the single most useful fact on this page, because it is the detail early-morning visitors get wrong most often, and the top-ranking guide on Google prints a flat Monday-to-Friday 8:00 am pattern that is wrong for Wednesdays. Second, Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed for Veterans Day — the office’s own dated calendar proves it for the very week this page publishes, and a reader planning a mid-week visit must see it before anything else. Third, Los Banos is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays — a reader who treats it as a normal full-time alternative will drive to a closed office five days out of seven. Everything else on this page — the services, the booking split, the kiosk, the partners, the nearby offices — is built around those three facts.
One more framing note before the detail: this guide is independent. It is not affiliated with the California DMV or with dmv.ca.gov, it collects no personal information, and it never pretends to be a government page. Every address, hour, service, kiosk, and partner on it was read on dmv.ca.gov on November 8, 2026, and the page carries that verification date at the bottom. Where a fact could not be verified on an official source, this page says so instead of printing it — the test menu, the Los Banos calendar rendering, and the M1 bus stop times are the three places that rule bites, and each is marked where it appears.
2Address — 1313 W 12th Street, Merced
The Merced DMV field office is at 1313 W 12th Street, Merced, CA 95340. The address is confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page, read live on November 8, 2026, and corroborated on the nearby lists of the Turlock, Madera, Los Banos, and Modesto field-office pages, which all name the Merced office at 1313 W 12th Street. The office’s own page carries a dated two-week hours calendar, a nine-category services list, a payments line, a kiosk banner, and a nearby list of one kiosk and nine business partners. The office’s kiosk has its own DMV kiosk page, which lists the same office at the same address as its first nearby entry.
Do not confuse this office with anything else in Merced that sounds like a DMV. The nine DMV business partners listed in section 9 are independent businesses authorized for certain registration services; they are not DMV offices, their hours are their own, and they may apply additional fees of their own. AAA Merced, at 3065 M Street, is members-only. Two partners sit on W 16th Street — Auto Resources at 819 W 16th Street and Merced Smog Center at 1030 W 16th Street — and that is very likely where the top-ranking guide’s wrong address, 744 W 16th Street, came from: it mixed a partner street into the office address. The office is on W 12th Street, not W 16th Street. And there is another trap in the ZIP code: one competitor prints 95341 for the office, which is wrong — the office ZIP is 95340, and 95341 is the ZIP of the Edmar Insurance Services partner address on V Street. Section 15 names both errors in full.
There is no second Merced DMV facility to confuse this office with. Merced has no Industry Business Center, no driver license processing center, and no commercial-services centre — searches for a Merced IBC or DLPC return only this standard field office, and the dmv.ca.gov slugs for a Merced IBC, a Merced DLPC, and a Merced commercial centre all return page-not-found. If a guide ever tells you to go to a second Merced DMV location for a license or a test, it is wrong. The office on W 12th Street is the only one.
Parking information is not published by the DMV for this office. This guide prints no parking claim of any kind — no free-parking line, no lot description, no street-parking advice — because no official source verified one on build day. The same discipline applies to the office’s surroundings: the Downtown Transportation Center sits at 16th and O Streets and the M1 bus route lists a stop named “DMV,” but this guide claims no bus stop at the office door and no walk time from any stop, because no stop-level source verified one; section 13 gives the transit picture in planner-check framing only.
3Hours — five days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Tuesday | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Wednesday | 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (one hour later start) |
| Thursday | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Friday | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Saturday | Closed |
| Sunday | Closed |
Three things in that table deserve emphasis, because each one is something the internet gets wrong about Merced. First, Saturday is never open. The office is closed every Saturday and every Sunday in both weeks of the DMV’s published calendar, and no Saturday hours exist for Merced on the DMV’s page. Any guide that claims Saturday hours for Merced — including one that claims a “Saturday pilot, second and fourth Saturdays” pattern — is wrong. The likely source of the confusion is the on-site kiosk, which the DMV describes as open daily, and the grocery-store kiosks in the cluster in section 8, which run seven days a week; kiosk hours are not office hours, and the two schedules must never be merged into one line. Second, Wednesday opens at 9:00 am, not 8:00 am. The top-ranking guide for Merced prints a flat “8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday” pattern — wrong for Wednesdays, and silent on the weekend closure — and a reader who arrives at 8:00 am on a Wednesday will find the doors still closed. Third, Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed entirely. The office’s own second-week calendar shows November 11 closed, and the DMV’s own banner says all California field offices are closed that day for Veterans Day. Do not book November 11, and do not drive to W 12th Street that day expecting a counter.
The hours above come from the office’s own dated two-week calendar on dmv.ca.gov, read live on November 8, 2026, and the pattern is identical in both weeks shown — the only exception is the Veterans Day closure. Other holiday closures are not shown in that grid, because the DMV’s holiday schedule is separate from the weekly grid. Re-check dmv.ca.gov before any holiday-week visit: a calendar that shows only Veterans Day cannot tell you about the next holiday, and this guide will not guess one.
A warning about how the DMV’s own pages can mislead on hours, because it matters beyond Merced. Every nearby-office slice on every office page checked for this guide renders Wednesday as “closed — closed” for every neighbouring office, even where that office’s own two-week calendar plainly shows Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The slice is a rendering bug in the DMV’s nearby-list widget: it drops the Wednesday row, and the only Wednesday genuinely closed in the published grid is November 11, Veterans Day. Three live instances were captured for this guide: the Turlock page shows Modesto as “Wed closed,” the Modesto page shows Turlock as “Wed closed,” and Merced’s own kiosk page shows the Merced office itself as “Wed closed” — all three false against the offices’ own calendars. Never take hours from a nearby slice — every hours figure in the nearby table in section 10 comes from the office’s own calendar, and the same bug is what once made a Bay Area guide wrongly claim a 7:00 am open for Redwood City. The same caution applies to the Merced kiosk page’s own calendar, which renders Wednesday, November 11 as 9:00 am to 5:00 pm: the kiosk sits inside the office, the office is closed that day, and the kiosk is unreachable — the field-office page is authoritative, and this guide prints the office closed on November 11.
4Services at this office
The Merced office page lists nine service categories, and this guide presents all nine in the DMV’s own grouping. Where a category’s practical scope needs explanation, the explanation stays inside what the DMV’s service pages describe. Nothing here is a fee figure, a route, or a time estimate.
| Service category | What it covers at this office |
|---|---|
| Licensing Services | Driver license and ID card counter work: first-time applications, REAL ID applications, renewals that require an in-person visit, and changes to a license record such as a name change. Routine renewals are not counter work — see the no-counter-service rule below. |
| Testing | The office administers tests. The published list names the category only and does not itemize which tests — see section 6 before assuming a motorcycle or commercial test is offered here. |
| Title Transfers | Ownership-transfer transactions: moving a title into a new owner’s name, including family transfers and private-party sales. Use the DMV’s title-transfer guidance for document requirements. |
| Registration | In-person registration transactions that cannot be completed online, at a kiosk, or through a partner — for example first-time registrations and complex cases. Straight registration renewals are not counter work. |
| Plates, Permits, & Placards | License-plate transactions, permits, and disabled-person placard services handled at the counter. No fee figure for any plate transaction appears on this page. |
| Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged | Replacement documents and items. Note the routing tension in the next paragraph: a replacement driver’s license specifically is routed away from the counter. |
| Records | Driver and vehicle record services. Records are also on the no-counter-service list — see the routing note below. |
| Request miscellaneous original documents | A catch-all DMV category for original-document requests that do not fit the other headings. This guide describes it in exactly those terms rather than guessing which documents it covers. |
| Self Service Terminals | The on-site DMV Now kiosk inside the office: self-service registration renewal and the other kiosk transactions in section 8, during office hours. This ninth service is the tell that Merced has a kiosk and Los Banos does not. |
Services count: 9. Any earlier draft or competitor page claiming eight services for Merced — or omitting Self Service Terminals — is wrong against today’s page. The nine-versus-eight split is itself a useful check: Merced, Turlock, Madera, and Modesto list nine, with a kiosk; Los Banos lists eight, with no kiosk. The count is the tell.
The most important routing fact on this page sits inside those nine rows, and it is the DMV’s own rule, from the appointments page: the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless the renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions “must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” A large share of people searching for this office do not need the office at all, and this guide says so up front rather than funnelling everyone into an appointment. The on-site kiosk in section 8 and the nine business partners in section 9 are the correct redirections for exactly those transactions — and for Merced readers they matter more than for most offices, precisely because this office is the only kiosk in its two cities and the fallback for six towns with no office of their own.
Two tensions in the services list deserve an honest statement rather than a smoothed-over one. First, the office page lists “Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged” as a category, while the appointments page routes replacement driver’s licenses away from the counter. Both facts are printed side by side here: the category exists, but a replacement license specifically should not be booked as an office visit. This guide does not invent a rule to resolve the tension. Second, the office page lists “Records” as a category, while the appointments page lists driver and vehicle records among the transactions with no counter service. The same treatment applies: the category is printed, and the routing note is printed with it.
Payments accepted at the counter: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order — the full six-method list, published verbatim on the office page itself. Phone: 1-800-777-0133 is the DMV’s statewide general line, shown on the DMV’s place listing for Merced. Present it as the general line, not as a Merced office direct line, because no office-specific number is published on the office page. A top-ranking guide prints a (209) number and calls it the office’s direct line — that number is invented, and this guide does not repeat it as a number to call; see section 15.
5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins
The DMV appointment system treats an office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test as two different appointment types, booked on the same scheduler but chosen separately. This guide never merges them into one generic “book an appointment” instruction, because picking the wrong type is the most common booking mistake. The walkthrough below follows the DMV’s own published flow on its appointments page. Availability is shown live by the scheduler; this guide deliberately states no availability claim, no lead-time claim, and no booking-window claim — the pages that promise a fixed number of weeks or days on one page and a different number on another are contradicting themselves, and none of it is official.
Office visit, step by step. First, check whether you need the counter at all. Registration renewal, routine license or ID renewal (unless your notice says in person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses are not counter services — do them online, at the kiosk inside this office, with a business partner, or by mail, and do not book an office visit for them. Second, start the application online first: the DMV’s appointments page instructs driver’s license customers to save time by completing the driver’s license application online before the appointment. Do this before picking a time. Third, open the DMV appointment scheduler at dmv.ca.gov and choose the office-visit type, then Merced as the location, then a date and time the system offers. Do not book Wednesday, November 11, 2026 — the office is closed that day for Veterans Day, and the scheduler will not offer it. Fourth, bring the documents for your transaction, using the DMV’s transaction-specific document guidance rather than a universal checklist, because document sets differ by transaction: REAL ID, title transfer, and first license are different bundles. Fifth, if your plans change, cancel through the scheduler so the slot frees up; third-party guides describe rescheduling as cancel-then-rebook, and this guide presents that only as the scheduler’s behaviour as described by those guides, not as a DMV-published rule.
Behind-the-wheel drive test, step by step. First, choose the drive-test type, not the office-visit type — a separate booking path in the same scheduler. Second, do not assume a motorcycle or commercial test is offered here: the Merced office page lists “Testing” as a category but does not itemize test types, so confirm your test type in the live scheduler rather than taking any third-party test menu as fact (see section 6). Third, commercial drive tests are a phone booking, not an online one, per multiple scheduler guides describing the DMV system — this guide presents that as the system’s behaviour as described by those guides, and a reader booking a commercial test should check whether the scheduler offers it at Merced at all. Fourth, bring a roadworthy, properly registered and insured vehicle and a licensed driver, per the DMV’s drive-test requirements — stated here as general DMV requirements, not Merced specifics, and without any street-route description. This guide asserts no test route, no parking description, and no manoeuvre list for Merced.
Phone booking. The DMV’s general line is 1-800-777-0133. Offer it as the fallback for readers who cannot use the online scheduler, and note that phone booking is the route the DMV system gives for commercial drive tests. Get in Line is the DMV’s same-day service: a virtual queue started from home, described here as an option that exists, and Merced customers do use it — review anecdotes on the office’s listing describe starting Get in Line from a phone and skipping the line just to get a number. This guide does not promise same-day availability at Merced, because no Merced-specific same-day claim is published, and it prints no Get in Line window hours, because the hours figure circulating online comes from a secondary source and was not verified on dmv.ca.gov. No Merced-specific walk-in policy is published either, so do not count on walking in for a drive test — and do not trust the top-ranking guide’s walk-in claims, because that same domain says three mutually exclusive things about walk-ins on its own pages; see section 15. New to California? The mover clocks are the ones this office’s newcomers get wrong most often: a new resident’s driver’s license application is due within 10 days of establishing residency, and vehicle registration within 20 days — two different clocks, never reversed. UC Merced’s international-student guide adds a Merced-specific wrinkle: new international students should wait at least 10 days after arriving in the United States and checking in with their international office before applying, so the government databases update.
6Driving tests at Merced: knowledge and behind-the-wheel — and what is not stated
The Merced office page lists “Testing” as one of its nine service categories. That is the whole of what the DMV publishes about testing at this office. Written knowledge tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests are booked as separate appointment types in the DMV system, and the booking split in section 5 is the practical consequence: a knowledge test and a drive test are different bookings, chosen separately, and a reader who books the wrong type has booked the wrong visit.
What this guide does not state is as important as what it does. It does not assert that motorcycle testing is offered at Merced, and it does not assert that commercial testing is offered at Merced. One competitor page asserts a motorcycle skills test for Merced with a checkmark, and asserts no CDL test — but that is the competitor’s own inference, not the DMV’s: the official page says only “Testing.” The correct instruction is to check the scheduler for the test type you need. The same discipline applies to the test itself: no street route, no turn list, no manoeuvre list, and no parking description for the test appears anywhere on this page, because no official source publishes one for Merced. One review anecdote describes a behind-the-wheel test taken at Merced, with the examiner starting early — that is an anecdote, not a rule, and it proves only that drive tests happen here.
Two timing facts from the DMV’s own system are safe to print, and both are about the clock, not the test. First, the DMV will not administer knowledge tests after 4:30 p.m. — that is the appointment system’s own line, and it means a late-afternoon arrival for a written test is a wasted trip even on a day the office is open until 5:00 p.m. Second, the permit path for Merced’s teenagers follows the California Driver Handbook: a minimum age of 15 and a half; a 30-hour DMV-approved driver education course with the certificate of completion; a parent or guardian signature on the application; a vision test and a knowledge test at the office; then six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training and 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night, before the drive test, with the permit held six months before the drive test at age 16 or older. Those ages and requirements are labelled as handbook guidance rather than asserted as DMV text for this office, because the official Merced page lists only the “Testing” category. This guide prints no knowledge-test question count and no pass mark, and no permit fee figure: question counts are a locked-plan gate, and fee figures from third-party pages are not official. The UC Merced student angle matters here too: new students arriving from out of state or abroad should settle the 10-day and 20-day mover clocks in section 5 before booking a test, and international students should follow their campus office’s 10-day wait guidance.
7REAL ID at Merced
REAL ID applications are in-person counter work, and Merced’s licensing services cover them. Start the application online first — the DMV’s own appointments page instructs driver’s license customers to complete the application online before the appointment — then book an office visit for Merced, and bring the original documents the DMV’s REAL ID checklist requires for your situation. This guide does not print a universal REAL ID document list, because the required bundle differs by applicant: use the DMV’s own REAL ID guidance for the exact documents, and bring originals, not copies.
Two things this guide deliberately does not print about REAL ID. It prints no REAL ID fee figure, and it prints no federal enforcement date: neither was verified on dmv.ca.gov in this build, and a date carried only by third-party sources does not go on this page. What the page does say is the practical part: a first REAL ID needs an in-person visit, a renewal that requires an in-person visit is also counter work, and a routine renewal whose notice does not specify an in-person visit is not — that one goes online, to the kiosk inside this office, to a partner, or by mail, like every other routine renewal. If your renewal notice says to come in, come in; if it does not, do not book a counter visit for it.
One falsehood needs a direct correction, because it ranks first on Google for the appointment query. A top-ranking guide states four times that Merced “does not handle Real ID upgrades in-person,” that those are “processed by mail or through the online system,” and that readers should go to “a larger regional DMV office in Fresno or Sacramento” for in-person REAL ID. Every part of that is false. Merced is a full-service field office whose licensing services include REAL ID; the DMV’s own REAL ID process is apply online, then visit an office with the original documents and the confirmation code; and there is no “REAL ID by mail” path of the kind described. Do not drive to Fresno or Sacramento for a REAL ID on that guide’s say-so — book Merced, start the application online, and bring the originals.
8Kiosk — there IS one inside this office — and how to skip the trip entirely
Merced’s kiosk is the defining fact of this office page, and this guide treats it as such rather than burying it. Three independent checks all point the same way. The Merced field-office page opens with the kiosk banner — “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line. DMV kiosks are convenient and offer services that are quick and easy. No wait times and open daily!” — the same banner Turlock’s, Madera’s, and Modesto’s pages carry, while Los Banos’s page goes straight from the photo to the hours calendar. The Merced services list has nine entries, not eight — “Self Service Terminals” is present as the ninth service, while Los Banos lists eight without it. And the office’s kiosk has its own DMV kiosk page, at the same address, 1313 W 12th Street. Any one of the three would be suggestive; together they settle it. Kiosk on site: yes.
DMV Now kiosks are self-serve stations where certain registration services can be completed and driver or vehicle records requested, and the range of services varies by kiosk location — that is the DMV’s own description. The DMV’s kiosk FAQ says the DMV has 289 kiosks in retail and DMV locations, many accepting cash, and that a registration can be renewed at a kiosk to get the sticker immediately. The transactions the FAQ lists are: registration renewal; filing for planned nonoperation; paying a vehicle registration suspension reinstatement fee; submitting or removing an affidavit of non-use; submitting proof of insurance when requested; receiving a driver’s record or a vehicle record; replacement registration card or sticker; driver’s license or ID renewal; replacement driver’s license; renewing vessel registration; and change of address. The Merced kiosk’s own page lists its transactions as: Planned Nonoperation (PNO); Reinstate Registration, listed with a $14 fee; Submit Proof of Insurance; Affidavit of Non-Use (ANU); renew registration and print sticker; renewal; replace license; replace registration; replace stickers and tags. What to bring: the renewal notice, with the Renewal Identification Number at the top left, or the current registration card; for a card or sticker replacement, the plate number plus the last five digits of the VIN; for a driver’s or vehicle record, the driver’s license or ID card. Credit and debit card payments are accepted at all kiosk locations, and all DMV offices and some retail locations accept cash; only one method of payment is allowed per transaction, and all credit and debit card transactions are assessed a 1.95 percent service fee. Vehicle transactions are available in English, Armenian, Chinese, Farsi, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese; license transactions in English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.
The cluster below was verified on dmv.ca.gov on November 8, 2026: the Merced, Turlock, Madera, Los Banos, and Modesto office pages, and the Merced, Safeway Turlock, Safeway Modesto, and Save Mart Modesto kiosk pages. No standalone retail kiosk was verified on dmv.ca.gov in Merced or Atwater in this run — the Merced office page’s nearby list contains exactly one kiosk entry, the field office itself, and repeated dmv.ca.gov searches for kiosks in those two cities return only the Merced field-office kiosk page — so none is added for those towns from aggregator sites. A Coinstar kiosk at a Merced grocery store is a coin machine, not a DMV kiosk, and must not be confused with one.
| Kiosk | Location | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Merced field office (on site) | 1313 W 12th Street, Merced, CA 95340 — inside the office, during office hours | Mon–Fri 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; Wed 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sat–Sun closed |
| Safeway in Turlock | 3051 Countryside Dr, Turlock, CA 95380 | 24 hours, per its own DMV kiosk page calendar |
| Safeway in Modesto | 2001 McHenry Ave Ste C, Modesto, CA 95350 | Mon–Sun 5:00 am – 2:00 am |
| Save Mart in Modesto | 2100 Standiford Ave, Modesto, CA 95350 | Mon–Sun 6:00 am – 12:00 am |
| Mendota City Hall | 643 Quince Street, Mendota, CA 93640 | Mon–Fri 8:00 am – 5:00 pm — the only DMV presence left in Mendota after its field office closed September 26, 2025 |
The on-site terminal is the anchor: the only kiosk in Merced itself, and the only kiosk in Merced County, verified on the Merced office page three ways. The Safeway in Turlock terminal is the nearest retail kiosk, open 24 hours — hours that cover evenings and weekends the office never does. The Safeway in Modesto terminal is the latest-closing grocery kiosk in the cluster, open to 2:00 am. The Save Mart in Modesto terminal closes at midnight. The Mendota City Hall terminal is the farthest-afield row, included as a last resort for readers heading south toward Fresno. And the kiosk-bearing field offices are the verified fallbacks if the on-site terminal is unavailable: Turlock (825 E Monte Vista Avenue), Madera (1206 Maple Street), and Modesto (124 Burney Street) — stated without any distance claim in this paragraph, because the distances are in the nearby table in section 10, labelled as sourced.
Do not describe any retail kiosk’s hours as office hours. The Safeway in Turlock kiosk is open 24 hours; the office is closed weekends. The two schedules must never be merged into one line, and this guide never writes “use the kiosk at the Merced office on Sunday” — the on-site terminal runs during office hours only, and that sentence would be false. The same rule applies in reverse: do not describe the on-site kiosk’s hours as the Safeway kiosk’s hours. Each terminal keeps its own schedule, and the table above is the only place the two are combined. One more caution, from a competitor’s Saturday-hours page: it claims “the DMV does not operate Saturday kiosk service at any location in California.” That is false — the Safeway and Save Mart kiosks above operate daily, including Saturdays, per dmv.ca.gov. Do not repeat it.
9DMV business partners near Merced
Partners are businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, and the DMV’s own partner description notes that additional fees may be applied by the partner. This guide repeats that fee warning in general terms and states no partner fee figure. Partners are not DMV offices, their hours are their own, and AAA Merced is members-only. All nine partners below are on the Merced field-office page itself, in the order the DMV lists them, read live on November 8, 2026. Partners open, close, and change hours without notice, so call before visiting.
| Partner | Address & phone | Published hours |
|---|---|---|
| AAA Merced Branch | 3065 M St, Merced, CA 95348 — 1-209-726-7440 | Mon–Fri 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am – 4:30 pm; Sun closed — members only (see note) |
| Auto Resources Inc | 819 W 16th St, Merced, CA 95340 — 1-209-383-4990 | Mon–Sat 10:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sun closed |
| Merced Smog Center | 1030 W 16th St, Merced, CA 95340 — 1-209-381-0200 | Mon–Fri 9:00 am – 4:30 pm; Sat–Sun closed |
| La Sonrisa Multiservices Inc | 1490 R St, Merced, CA 95340 — 1-855-777-2123 | Mon–Fri 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sat 10:00 am – 4:00 pm; Sun closed |
| Edmar Insurance Services | 1277 V St Ste C, Merced, CA 95341 — 1-209-390-4052 | Mon–Fri 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sat 10:00 am – 3:00 pm; Sun closed |
| La Sonrisa Income Tax Atwater | 337 E Bellevue Rd, Atwater, CA 95301 — 1-209-769-8060 | Hours not printed — the listing shows all-week closed, which is plainly stale data; call before visiting |
| EASY TAGS | 1791 Sycamore Ave, Atwater, CA 95301 — 1-209-720-9604 | Mon–Fri 10:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sat–Sun closed |
| E-z Auto Registration Services | 2979 Winton Way, Atwater, CA 95301 — 1-209-676-2477 | Mon–Thu 10:30 am – 5:30 pm; Fri–Sat 10:30 am – 5:00 pm; Sun 11:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Ramirez Motors Auto Smog | 6698 N Winton Way Suite A, Winton, CA 95388 — 1-209-357-4099 | Mon–Sat 8:00 am – 8:30 pm; Sun 10:00 am – 4:00 pm |
Four details in that table are worth one sentence each. Ramirez Motors Auto Smog is the only partner in the set open on Sunday mornings from 10:00 am, and the only one open to 8:30 pm on weekdays — the longest hours in the set. E-z Auto Registration Services is the only partner in the set open on Sunday afternoons, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. La Sonrisa Income Tax Atwater carries the all-week-closed anomaly: this guide prints its name, address, and phone only, with a call-first caution, because publishing “closed all week” as hours would mislead readers — the same quirk appears for partners elsewhere on dmv.ca.gov, so it is a locator data quirk, not a real hours statement. And AAA Merced carries a weekday-hours discrepancy worth flagging: the DMV page says Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, while AAA’s own site lists this branch’s DMV hours as Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm — check with AAA before a weekday visit, and treat the DMV page’s 6:00 pm close as unconfirmed for weekdays. AAA’s DMV services, per AAA’s own site, are registration renewal, replacement registration certificates, VIN verification for out-of-state transfers, personalized-plate applications, and one-day moving permits; members only. Partners verified: 9, all from the Merced field-office page. One stale-address warning: older search crawls show E-z Auto Registration Services at 1277 V St Ste C, Merced — the live page shows Edmar Insurance Services at that address and E-z Auto in Atwater. Use the live page, not the old crawls.
10Merced County guide: which town, which office
Every office in the table below was opened on its own dmv.ca.gov field-office page on November 8, 2026. Kiosk status is that office’s own badge-plus-services-list result, never copied from Merced’s nearby card, and hours are that office’s own published weekly pattern. Distances are given only where a named third-party source states them, labelled as straight-line miles; where no distance was verified, none is given, and this guide does not invent one or convert straight-line miles into drive times.
| Office | Address | Weekly hours | Kiosk on site? | Distance from Merced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turlock | 825 E Monte Vista Avenue, Turlock, CA 95382 | Mon–Tue 8–5, Wed 9–5, Thu–Fri 8–5, Sat–Sun closed | Yes — kiosk banner + Self Service Terminals (9 services) | About 24 straight-line miles |
| Madera | 1206 Maple Street, Madera, CA 93637 | Mon–Tue 8–5, Wed 9–5, Thu–Fri 8–5, Sat–Sun closed | Yes — kiosk banner + Self Service Terminals (9 services) | About 33 straight-line miles |
| Los Banos | 814 West L Street, Los Banos, CA 93635 | Tue + Thu only, 8–5; Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun closed (see section 11) | No — 8 services, no badge | About 25–26 straight-line miles |
| Modesto | 124 Burney Street, Modesto, CA 95354 | Mon–Tue 8–5, Wed 9–5, Thu–Fri 8–5, Sat–Sun closed | Yes — kiosk banner + Self Service Terminals (9 services) | About 37 straight-line miles |
Nearby offices verified: 4 — three full-service offices with kiosks plus Los Banos, which is part-time and kiosk-free. All three full-service offices list the same nine service categories as Merced. Merced to Turlock is about 24 straight-line miles, Merced to Los Banos about 25 to 26 straight-line miles, Merced to Madera about 33 straight-line miles, and Merced to Modesto about 37 straight-line miles, per the third-party city guides checked November 8, 2026 — the only distances this guide prints, labelled exactly as sourced. No drive times are printed for any of them.
Four traps in this table need explicit handling, because each one has already produced a wrong page somewhere on the internet.
Trap 1: Los Banos is not a full-time office. Its hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays only, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, confirmed on its own dated calendar and in the DMV’s own reopening press release. Competitor pages print Monday-to-Friday hours for Los Banos and a wrong address, 520 I Street — the office is at 814 West L Street. Section 11 covers it in full.
Trap 2: the “Wednesday closed” slice anomaly is systematic. Every nearby slice on every office page checked for this guide renders Wednesday as “closed” for every neighbouring office, even where that office’s own two-week calendar plainly shows Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The slice is a rendering bug in the DMV’s nearby-list widget: it drops the Wednesday row. This guide never takes hours from a nearby slice, and the same bug is what once made a Bay Area guide wrongly claim a 7:00 am open for Redwood City.
Trap 3: six towns have no office at all. Atwater, Winton, Livingston, Gustine, Dos Palos, and Chowchilla have no field office — each returns a page-not-found on dmv.ca.gov, checked November 8, 2026, and none appears in the nearby lists of the Merced, Turlock, Madera, or Modesto pages. Readers in Atwater and Winton use Merced, about 6.6 straight-line miles from Atwater; readers in Livingston use Merced or Turlock; readers in Gustine and Dos Palos use Los Banos on its two open days or Merced; readers in Chowchilla use Merced or Madera. “DMV in Atwater” is a real search query with no office behind it, and this guide says so plainly rather than letting a reader drive to a town with no counter. Patterson and Newman, in Stanislaus County, have no field office either.
Trap 4: the Mendota office is gone. Mendota’s field office closed permanently on September 26, 2025. Only a kiosk survives, at Mendota City Hall, 643 Quince Street, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Do not send readers to a Mendota office — there is not one, and the Madera page’s nearby list is the source for the kiosk.
The Merced page’s own nearby list names the Merced field-office kiosk and the nine partners in section 9. This guide references that list as the DMV’s own shortlist, but it prints no wait-time minutes from the page’s wait strip: the strip showed “Closed” at check time, and wait minutes are a live, time-varying display this guide never asserts.
11The Los Banos trap: the part-time office five days away from open
Los Banos, at 814 West L Street, Los Banos, CA 93635, is the only other DMV field office in Merced County, and it is the office most likely to waste a Merced reader’s trip — because it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and closed every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That pattern holds in both weeks of the office’s own dated calendar on dmv.ca.gov, read live on November 8, 2026, and it is confirmed by the DMV’s own press release: the office closed on October 2, 2025 for mold remediation and reopened to the public on October 30, 2025, “open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.” It lists eight services, not nine — there is no Self Service Terminals entry, no kiosk banner, and no kiosk on site. Its only nearby listing is the AAA Los Banos Branch, at 1451 W Pacheco Boulevard, Suite H, Los Banos, CA 93635, 1-209-827-5000, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, members only.
The internet gets Los Banos badly wrong, and this section exists because a Merced reader who trusts those pages will drive 25 miles to a closed door. One competitor prints a wrong address, 520 I Street, wrong hours, Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and a wrong phone number — the same fabrication pattern as that domain’s Merced page, which invents an address, hours, and a phone number for this office too. Another directory prints hours claiming the office is open Monday and Tuesday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a footer table claiming Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm — wrong on both counts. The correct facts are the ones in the first paragraph of this section: 814 West L Street, Tuesdays and Thursdays only, no kiosk.
Two practical consequences follow. First, if Merced is booked and Los Banos is your fallback, check the day before you drive: on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, Los Banos is closed and Turlock or Madera is the correct fallback instead. Second, for registration-only errands on a Los Banos closed day, the kiosk inside the Merced office, the Safeway kiosk in Turlock, or a Merced partner is faster than any drive to a closed office. The Los Banos office is a real, useful office for the west side of the county — but only on its two days.
12If Merced is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives
If the Merced office is closed — a Wednesday morning before 9:00 am, a Saturday, a Sunday, or Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day — or if the scheduler shows no Merced time that works, the nearest full-service alternatives are Turlock and Madera. Turlock, at 825 E Monte Vista Avenue, is about 24 straight-line miles from Merced, keeps the same weekly pattern (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed weekends), and has a kiosk on site, plus the Safeway kiosk at 3051 Countryside Drive, open 24 hours. Madera, at 1206 Maple Street, is about 33 straight-line miles away, keeps the same weekly pattern, and has a kiosk on site. Modesto, at 124 Burney Street, is about 37 straight-line miles away, with the same weekly pattern and a kiosk on site, plus the Safeway and Save Mart grocery kiosks. Availability is shown live in the scheduler — this guide states no availability claim for any of them, and a reader should check the scheduler rather than driving to an alternative on a guess. For registration-only errands, the kiosk inside the Merced office, the Safeway kiosk in Turlock, or the DMV partners in Merced may be faster than any alternative office.
One alternative that is not an alternative on most days: Los Banos is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so it is a fallback only on those two days — and it has no kiosk, so registration-only errands should go to the Merced kiosk or a partner instead. And one alternative that does not exist at all: there is no DMV field office in Atwater, Winton, Livingston, Gustine, Dos Palos, or Chowchilla, and no Merced IBC or commercial centre. Do not drive to any of those towns expecting a counter.
13Best time to visit, what to bring, and getting there
This guide prints no wait-time minutes and no “best day” claim, because neither is published for Merced and both change by the hour. The honest timing advice is the negative kind: do not arrive at 8:00 am on a Wednesday (the doors open at 9:00 am); do not arrive on a Saturday or a Sunday (the office is closed); do not plan a visit for Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (closed for Veterans Day); do not arrive after 4:30 pm for a knowledge test (the DMV does not administer knowledge tests after that time); do not drive to Los Banos on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday (it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only); and do not arrive for a renewal, a record, or a replacement license at all (those have no counter service — use the kiosk inside this office, the online portal, a partner, or mail). The positive advice is preparation, not timing: complete the driver’s license application online before the appointment, as the DMV instructs; bring the documents for your transaction, using the DMV’s transaction-specific guidance; and for a drive test, bring a roadworthy, properly registered and insured vehicle and a licensed driver.
What to bring depends on the transaction, and this guide does not print a universal checklist, because document sets differ by transaction. For a REAL ID, bring the original documents the DMV’s REAL ID checklist requires for your situation. For a title transfer, use the DMV’s title-transfer guidance for the document requirements. For a first license, bring the application, the parent or guardian signature where required, and the driver education certificate where required. The pattern is the same every time: the DMV publishes the bundle per transaction, and this guide points to it rather than printing a list that would be wrong for half its readers. One Merced-specific timing note: UC Merced’s international-student guide advises new international students to wait at least 10 days after arriving in the United States and checking in with their international office before applying, so the government databases update — that wait is part of the preparation, not a delay to skip.
Getting there, in planner-check framing only: Merced County Transit, known as The Bus, runs 15 fixed routes across the county, and its M1 Merced West route lists a stop named “DMV” on its published stop list — the stop name is confirmed on three schedule sources, but the stop times come from third-party schedule mirrors, so check the operator’s trip planner for times rather than taking any printed time from this guide. The M3 M Street Shuttle stops at M Street and 12th, a short distance from the office, again in planner-check framing. The base fare is $1.50 for a local trip within Merced, Atwater, or Winton, and $3 for a trip between cities, as published on the route pages; fixed-route information is 209-725-3813. The Downtown Transportation Center, at 16th and O Streets, is the hub for local, regional, and national bus service in Merced, and Amtrak’s Gold Runner (San Joaquins) serves Merced station. By road, Highway 99 runs through Merced north–south and Highway 140 runs east–west. Check your trip on the operator’s planner before you travel: this guide names no bus stop at the office door, no route number to the office door, no station-to-office walk time, and no timetable, because none was verified against a stop-level source, and it prints no exit number and no drive time. Parking information is not published by the DMV for this office.
14Who uses this office: Merced, UC Merced, and the six towns with no office
Merced’s office serves the whole of Merced County, and its catchment is wider than its own city limits. Merced itself is 86,333 people at the 2020 census, up 9.3 percent from 78,958 in 2010, and an estimated 99,724 by July 1, 2025 — the city is approaching 100,000 residents, and this single full-service office is the counter for nearly all of them. Merced County is 281,202 people at the 2020 census, with Merced as its seat. The county’s defining institution is UC Merced, the tenth University of California campus, which opened in 2005 northeast of the city limits on about 1,026 acres next to Lake Yosemite and enrolled 9,647 students in fall 2026, an all-time record. That matters for this office because students arriving from out of state or abroad are the readers most likely to need the new-resident rules in section 5 — a driver’s license application within 10 days of establishing residency, vehicle registration within 20 days — and most likely to arrive with an out-of-state license and an out-of-state title in the same week. Merced College, the community college, adds a second student flow. The UC Merced International Students & Scholars office hands new international students a driver’s license guide that points at this exact office and advises the 10-day wait described in section 5, and this guide does not print a military exemption as a general rule: Merced has no active military base — Castle Air Force Base, in Atwater, closed in 1995 — and any guide that describes Merced as a current base town is stale.
Six towns use this office because they have no office of their own. Atwater is immediately north of Merced — about 6.6 straight-line miles away — but Atwater has no DMV field office and no DMV kiosk; its readers use Merced, and three of the nine partners in section 9 are Atwater businesses. Winton, northwest of Merced, has no office; its readers use Merced, and one partner sits on Winton Way. Livingston, northwest toward Turlock, has no office; its readers use Merced or Turlock. Gustine and Dos Palos, on the west side of the county, have no office; their readers use Los Banos on its two open days or Merced. Chowchilla, southeast toward Madera, has no office; its readers use Merced or Madera. “DMV in Atwater” is a real search query with no office behind it, and this guide says so plainly rather than letting a reader drive to a town with no counter. The same applies to the county-seat history: Merced has held the seat since the county’s founding, and the office on W 12th Street is the county-seat office — the reason its catchment is the whole county, not just its own city.
15Why this page matters: the errors the internet makes about the Merced DMV
Most of what is wrong about the Merced DMV online is not malice — it is copying. A flat hours pattern copied onto every office, a kiosk line copied onto an office that has none — or a kiosk omission copied onto an office that has one — a partner’s street copied as the office address, a wrong ZIP copied as the office ZIP, a wait-time snapshot copied as a fact. This section names the errors so a reader can spot them elsewhere, and each correction traces to a dmv.ca.gov page read on November 8, 2026.
A wrong address, ranked first on Google. The top-ranking guide for the appointment query prints “744 W. 16th Street, Merced, CA 95340” three times — in its body and in its key takeaways. The office is at 1313 W 12th Street. No official source supports 744 W 16th Street as the DMV office: 16th Street is where several DMV partners sit — Auto Resources at 819 W 16th Street and Merced Smog Center at 1030 W 16th Street — which is very likely where the confusion came from. A reader following that page drives to the wrong street. A wrong ZIP code. A second competitor prints “Merced, CA 95341” in its address block, despite claiming its content was verified on October 31, 2026. The office ZIP is 95340; 95341 is the ZIP of the Edmar Insurance Services partner address on V Street. A “verified” badge is not proof. An invented phone number. The top-ranking guide tells readers to “call the Merced office directly” at a (209) number, repeated three times, with advice about calling after 3 p.m. for shorter hold times. No official source publishes a direct Merced office number; the only published number is 1-800-777-0133. This guide does not print that number at all. A false REAL ID claim. The same guide states four times that Merced “does not handle Real ID upgrades in-person” and sends readers to Fresno or Sacramento. False, in full — see section 7. Wrong hours. The same guide prints “open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.” — wrong for Wednesdays, which open at 9:00 am, and silent on the weekend closure. Self-contradictory walk-ins. That domain says, on its own pages, that walk-ins are accepted for written tests but that arriving without an appointment for anything else means being turned away; that the DMV stopped accepting walk-ins at most locations; and that walk-in service is available at all DMV offices. Three mutually exclusive positions on one domain — this guide prints none of them, and states only the verified position in section 5. Wrong office counts. The same domain variously claims California has 41, 44, and over 170 field offices. The figure in the right order of magnitude is about 170; the 41 and 44 figures are wrong. An unverified fee. The same guide claims a standard driver’s license renewal costs an unverified 36-dollar fee for an eight-year license, and title transfers “typically cost between 15 and 70 dollars.” Neither figure is verified on dmv.ca.gov in this build, and neither appears as a fact anywhere else on this page. Wait-time claims. The same guide claims Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically less crowded, early-morning appointments usually have shorter waits, and most appointments take 15 to 30 minutes — all unsourced, and wait-time minutes are gated on this site. Los Banos, wrong in every field. The same domain’s Los Banos page prints a wrong address, 520 I Street, wrong hours, Monday through Friday, and a wrong phone number. The office is at 814 West L Street and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only. No Saturday kiosk service anywhere. A Saturday-hours page claims the DMV does not operate Saturday kiosk service at any location in California. False — the Safeway and Save Mart kiosks in section 8 operate daily, including Saturdays, per dmv.ca.gov. A Saturday pilot that does not exist. Another guide claims a small number of designated offices open on Saturdays, typically the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, and that about 60 high-volume offices open at 7:00 am on Wednesdays. Both contradict the verified finding that no California DMV field office is open on Saturdays, and Merced’s Wednesday open is 9:00 am, not 7:00 am. Motorcycle and commercial testing at Merced. One competitor asserts a motorcycle skills test for Merced with a checkmark and no CDL test. The DMV’s own page says only “Testing.” Check the scheduler rather than repeating a third-party test menu as fact. A DMV office in Atwater, Winton, Livingston, Gustine, Dos Palos, or Chowchilla. None exists. Guides that list one are confusing a partner, a kiosk, or a neighbouring town with a field office. Parking and drive-test route descriptions. Common on local guides, unverifiable on dmv.ca.gov, and explicitly excluded from this guide. Wait-time minutes and review scores. Third-party pages publish both; the DMV’s own wait strip is a live, time-varying display, and a place-listing rating is not a fact this guide may print. Neither appears on this page.
And the confusion-killer, in short form. The address is 1313 W 12th Street, not 744 W 16th Street, and the ZIP is 95340, not 95341. There IS a self-serve terminal inside the Merced field office; the kiosk is not at a Merced grocery store, and Los Banos has no kiosk at all. Not open on weekends: Saturday and Sunday are closed, every week in the published grid. Not open at 8:00 am on Wednesdays: Wednesday opening is 9:00 am, and not open at all on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Not the place for simple renewals: registration renewal, routine license or ID renewal, records, and replacement licenses have no counter service. REAL ID is done here, in person — do not drive to Fresno or Sacramento on a guide’s say-so. Los Banos is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Not affiliated with the partner businesses: partners are independent businesses authorized for certain registration services, they may apply additional fees, and they are not DMV offices. There is no second Merced DMV location: no IBC, no processing centre, no commercial centre — the office on W 12th Street is the only one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the address of the Merced DMV?
1313 W 12th Street, Merced, CA 95340, in Merced County. The address is confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page, read live on November 8, 2026, and on the nearby lists of the Turlock, Madera, Los Banos, and Modesto office pages. Do not use 744 W 16th Street — that address, printed three times by the top-ranking guide on Google, is wrong.
What are the Merced DMV hours?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday closed. The office is closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Veterans Day. Hours are taken from the office’s own dated two-week calendar on dmv.ca.gov, read live on November 8, 2026.
Is the Merced DMV open on Saturday?
No. The Merced DMV is closed every Saturday and Sunday. Any page claiming Saturday hours for Merced — including a “Saturday pilot” claim — is out of date or wrong. The grocery-store kiosks in the cluster are open weekends — that is the likely source of the confusion.
Can I walk in to the Merced DMV without an appointment?
Book through the DMV scheduler for counter services, online at dmv.ca.gov or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. But first check whether your transaction even has counter service: renewals, records, and replacement licenses do not, and should go online, to the kiosk inside this office, to a partner, or by mail. An office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types in the scheduler, and a drive test must be booked. Get in Line, the DMV’s same-day virtual queue started from home, is the same-day path — Merced customers do use it — but this guide promises no same-day availability, because no Merced-specific same-day claim is published.
How do I book an appointment at the Merced DMV?
Open the DMV appointment scheduler on dmv.ca.gov, or call 1-800-777-0133. Complete the driver’s license application online before the appointment, as the DMV instructs, then choose the right appointment type — office visit or behind-the-wheel drive test — then Merced as the location, then a date and time the system offers. Do not book Wednesday, November 11, 2026: the office is closed for Veterans Day.
Does the Merced DMV do REAL ID?
Yes, in person. Start the REAL ID application online, then visit the Merced office with the original documents the DMV’s REAL ID checklist requires for your situation. A top-ranking guide claims Merced does not handle REAL ID in person and sends readers to Fresno or Sacramento — that is false; see section 7.
Does the Merced DMV have a kiosk?
Yes. There is a self-service kiosk inside the Merced field office: the official page carries the kiosk banner and lists “Self Service Terminals” as a service, and the kiosk has its own DMV kiosk page at the same address. It runs during office hours only. For registration renewal and similar quick transactions after hours, the nearest retail kiosks are Safeway in Turlock, open 24 hours, and Safeway and Save Mart in Modesto.
What services does the Merced DMV offer?
Nine published categories: licensing services, testing, title transfers, registration, plates, permits and placards, replacements for lost or stolen items, records, miscellaneous original documents, and Self Service Terminals. See section 4 for what each category covers and which transactions have no counter service. The office page does not itemize test types, so confirm your test type in the live scheduler rather than taking any third-party test menu as fact.
What payment methods does the Merced DMV accept?
Cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order — the full six-method list, published verbatim on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page.
What should I bring to the Merced DMV?
It depends on the transaction, and this guide does not print a universal checklist, because document sets differ by transaction. For a REAL ID, bring the original documents the DMV’s REAL ID checklist requires for your situation. For a title transfer, use the DMV’s title-transfer guidance. For a first license, bring the application, the parent or guardian signature where required, and the driver education certificate where required. Bring originals, not copies. UC Merced’s international students should also follow their campus office’s guidance to wait at least 10 days after arriving in the United States and checking in before applying.
Can I take my driving test at the Merced DMV?
Drive tests are booked as a separate appointment type from office visits, and a drive test must be booked — do not count on walking in for one. The office page lists “Testing” but does not itemize test types, so confirm your test type in the live scheduler rather than taking any third-party test menu as fact — including for motorcycle and commercial tests. Bring a roadworthy, properly registered and insured vehicle and a licensed driver. This guide asserts no test route and no manoeuvre list for Merced.
If Merced is booked, which DMV should I go to instead?
Turlock (825 E Monte Vista Avenue, about 24 straight-line miles) and Madera (1206 Maple Street, about 33 straight-line miles) are the nearest full-service offices, both with kiosks on site; Modesto (124 Burney Street, about 37 straight-line miles) is the same. Los Banos (814 West L Street) is the nearest office to the west, but it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only — do not drive there on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Check the scheduler for live availability rather than driving to an alternative on a guess.

Book Before You Drive to Merced
Merced is open five days a week with a Wednesday 9:00 am start, it is the county seat of Merced County with its own full-service office on W 12th Street and a kiosk on site, and it is the only full-service office in the county — so its drive-test and REAL ID appointments are the visits that punish an unprepared arrival most, and its registration renewals belong at the kiosk inside the office or a partner instead. Check the day, check the Wednesday 9:00 am open, remember the Veterans Day closure, do not drive to W 16th Street for this office, do not drive to Los Banos on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, use dmv.ca.gov, the on-site kiosk, or a Merced partner instead of waiting in the counter line.
