San Mateo DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide
The full-service DMV field office for San Mateo and the mid-Peninsula — eight counter services and behind-the-wheel drive tests, but no self-service kiosk on site. The 24-hour Safeway kiosks in Belmont and Redwood City cover renewals instead — and Redwood City, minutes south, has a kiosk inside a full-service office. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.
Verified against dmv.ca.gov: November 4, 2026 · Independent guide — not affiliated with the California DMV or dmv.ca.gov. Booking always happens on the official DMV scheduler; this page helps you prepare.
1San Mateo’s full-service office — and the no-kiosk trap
If you live in San Mateo, this is your DMV office — and it is a good one to have, with one quirk you need to know before you go. The field office at 425 N Amphlett Boulevard is a full-service office with eight counter services, including behind-the-wheel drive tests. What it does not have is a self-service kiosk. Its official services list on dmv.ca.gov runs to eight items and stops there — no “Self Service Terminals”, no “This office has a self-serve kiosk” headline. That single missing line changes the plan for a whole class of visits: if your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, do not drive to Amphlett Boulevard for a kiosk that is not there. Two Safeway kiosks — Belmont and Redwood City — run 24 hours a day and do that job instead, and the Redwood City field office, minutes south, has a kiosk inside a full-service office.
Our Redwood City DMV guide covers that office in full — the county-seat office at 300 Brewster Avenue, open Monday to Friday with a 9:00 am Wednesday start, a kiosk inside, and the Veterans Day closure on Wednesday, November 11, 2026.
San Mateo is the mid-Peninsula anchor: the largest city in San Mateo County (105,661 people in the 2020 Census), sitting about halfway between San Francisco and San Jose, and the office that serves San Mateo itself plus Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City and Hillsborough — none of which has a field office of its own. The county seat is Redwood City, not San Mateo, and Redwood City’s office is the closest full-service fallback with a kiosk. This guide is built the same way as every office guide in this series: every office fact below was read on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page on November 4, 2026, every nearby office was verified on its own official page, and anything that could not be verified is marked as such rather than guessed.
Three facts to carry into the rest of the page. First, the hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, closed Saturday and Sunday — and closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Veterans Day (all field offices close that day). Second, the booking split: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types in the official scheduler, and booking the wrong one means rebooking. Third, the no-counter-service rule: the DMV no longer provides counter service for routine registration renewals, eligible license and ID renewals, record requests, or replacement licenses — those go online, to a kiosk, to a partner, or by mail. If your errand is one of those, this office is the wrong destination no matter how close it is.
The trap in one sentence: San Mateo’s office does licences, REAL ID, tests, titles, registration and plates — but it has no kiosk, so a reader who drives there for a quick registration renewal wastes the trip. Use the 24-hour Safeway kiosk in Belmont (1100 El Camino Real) or Redwood City (1071 El Camino) instead, or the kiosk inside the Redwood City field office. See section 5 for the full kiosk cluster.
2Hours, services & what this office offers
The weekly pattern is the standard California field-office pattern, confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page (which prints a two-week calendar, November 1–14, 2026, showing the same pattern):
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Tuesday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Wednesday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late) |
| Thursday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Saturday – Sunday | Closed |
The Wednesday quirk is the detail that catches the most people: every other weekday opens at 8:00 AM, but Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM. Do not show up at 8:00 on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage — you will wait outside for an hour. Weekends are closed, full stop. No California DMV field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for San Mateo — several do, and they are wrong. One law firm’s DMV-locations page claims “more than 60 DMV field offices are open from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturdays”; a car-directory site says “some Saturday hours at larger offices”; and a 2018 student article still in search results says the Redwood City office “is open on Saturdays”. All three are stale or wrong for this office. State holidays can change hours too — the next one is Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day), when all field offices are closed — so confirm on the official office page the day before you go; see our California DMV holidays guide. And one timing rule that applies statewide: knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered after 4:30 p.m., so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test.
The office provides eight services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov — and the missing ninth is the one that sets San Mateo apart from several sibling offices in this series. Unlike Redwood City, Daly City and San Francisco (Fell Street), whose own pages carry the headline “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line”, San Mateo’s page carries no such headline and no “Self Service Terminals” line. It is the same as Hayward in that respect: eight services, no kiosk.
| Service (official list) | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|
| Licensing Services | Driver licenses (new, renewal, replacement), ID cards, and REAL ID applications. REAL ID first applications require an in-person office visit with original documents — this is the single biggest reason people still visit in person. Start the application online first for a confirmation code; it shortens counter time. AB 60 licenses are also handled here: California issues driver licenses regardless of immigration status, accepting a foreign passport or matrícula consular as identity, with cards marked “Federal Limits Apply”. |
| Testing | Knowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests, booked as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. Motorcycle skills-test and CDL road-test availability are not itemized for this office on its official page — check the scheduler rather than assuming either. One directory asserts a motorcycle test here and no CDL test; those are single-directory claims, not official facts, and this page does not repeat them. See section 8. |
| Title Transfers | Private-party sales, family transfers, and out-of-state titles. Bring the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office. |
| Registration | New vehicle registrations, renewals that cannot be completed online, and planned non-operation (PNO) filings for vehicles going into storage. Simple registration renewals are often kiosk or online tasks instead — check section 5 before booking. |
| Plates, Permits, & Placards | Replacement license plates, temporary operating permits, and disabled person placards. Disabled placard applications are one of the few counter services with no online substitute — bring the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional. |
| Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged | Duplicate driver licenses, registration cards, and vehicle titles when the original is lost, stolen, or damaged. |
| Records | Driver and vehicle record requests. Note that simple record-copy requests are handled through out-of-office options only in many cases — check eligibility before visiting. |
| Request miscellaneous original documents | Less common document requests handled at the counter for paperwork outside the standard categories. |
Payment is the same statewide line printed on the office page: the DMV accepts cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order at field offices. The statewide phone line for everything is 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). No office-specific phone number is published for San Mateo — any “direct San Mateo DMV number” from a directory is unverified, so use the statewide line. One number to actively avoid: a 1-415 number that appears on a business-partner listing for San Mateo is a partner-page number, not the office’s published number — do not call it expecting the field office. This page deliberately prints no fee dollar amounts: fee line items change and are gated until re-verified on dmv.ca.gov at build time, and the one figure that is safe to state is that booking itself is free.
One more scope rule before you book, because it saves more trips than any other paragraph on this page: routine services get no counter service at all. Simple registration renewals, eligible license and ID renewals, record copies, and replacement licenses are routed by the DMV to online, kiosk, mail, or phone options — the counter will not do them. Before driving to Amphlett Boulevard, check whether your task is actually an office task. If it is a registration renewal or a record copy, the 24-hour Safeway kiosk in Belmont (1100 El Camino Real) or Redwood City (1071 El Camino) probably beats a weekday office visit. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the office.
3Booking an appointment here
Booking happens only on the DMV’s official scheduler, and it is free. Here is the play for San Mateo, step by step, with nothing invented:
- Pick the appointment type first. Go to the official DMV appointment scheduler and choose field-office visit for licenses, ID, REAL ID, registration and most counter services, or behind-the-wheel drive test for the road test. These are separate queues — booking the wrong type means rebooking. Drive tests are also split by vehicle type in the scheduler (automobile, commercial, motorcycle).
- Search by ZIP or city. Enter 94401 or “San Mateo” and pick the Amphlett Boulevard office — not a partner address, not a kiosk address. Any office serves any California resident regardless of address, so you are not tied to the one nearest your home.
- Do the online application first, for license and ID transactions. Appointments for driver-license and ID-card transactions only open after you submit the online application — complete it first, then return to book. The application gives you a confirmation code to bring to the office.
- Confirm before you travel. Re-check the hours on the official office page the day before, especially on Wednesdays (9:00 AM opening) and around state holidays. The next holiday closure is Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day) — all field offices closed.
- Bring originals. Photocopies are never accepted. Run the documents checklist the night before so a missing paper does not turn into a second trip.
Prefer phone? Call 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). TTY is 1-800-368-4327. If San Mateo shows nothing, widen the same search by task — Redwood City or Daly City for full services with a kiosk, San Francisco (Fell Street) for full services with a kiosk, Hayward for counter work only (no kiosk) — and check back, because cancellations open slots. See section 4 for the full comparison.
Same-day option — Get in Line Now. If you did not book ahead, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the same-day check-in option, Get in Line Now. Verified live on November 4, 2026, the Get in Line hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7:50 AM–4:00 PM and Wednesday 8:50 AM–4:00 PM — the queue opens ten minutes before the office. Get in Line was never discontinued: the QR Virtual Intake that arrived in April 2026 is an addition, not a replacement. Do not expect a true walk-up counter — the same-day path the DMV offers is Get in Line, so plan on booking ahead or joining the line online rather than just showing up.
Two more booking facts that save a wasted trip. First, the drive test is appointment-only. There is no walk-in path for the behind-the-wheel test — book the drive-test appointment in advance, online or by phone, and bring a safe-to-drive vehicle with a licensed driver to accompany you. Second, do not book an appointment for a routine transaction. The DMV says appointments should not be made for registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record requests, or replacement licenses, because there is no counter service for them. Those go online, to a kiosk, to a partner, or by mail — booking a slot for one is not an option in the scheduler.
4Nearby DMV offices: check the services list before you drive
Every mid-Peninsula resident’s in-person option is one of five offices, and they are not interchangeable. The four alternatives below were each verified on their own dmv.ca.gov page on November 4, 2026 — same weekly hours everywhere (Monday–Tuesday 8–5, Wednesday 9–5, Thursday–Friday 8–5, Saturday–Sunday closed), same six payment methods, different services and different kiosk situations. The table is the whole point of this section: read it by task, not by distance.
| Office | Address | Kiosk on site | Services — what matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Mateo (this office) | 425 N Amphlett Boulevard, San Mateo, CA 94401 | No | 8 services. The default for San Mateo, Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City and Hillsborough. |
| Redwood City | 300 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City, CA 94063 | Yes | Full 9 services. The best fallback south: same services as a full-service office PLUS a kiosk. Also the county seat’s office. |
| Daly City | 1500 Sullivan Avenue, Daly City, CA 94015 | Yes | Full 9 services. The north-side fallback with a kiosk — our Daly City DMV guide covers it in full. |
| Hayward | 150 Jackson Street, Hayward, CA 94544 | No | 8 services, same as San Mateo. Counter work only — do NOT send a kiosk task here. Our Hayward DMV guide covers it in full. Reached across the San Mateo Bridge. |
| San Francisco (Fell Street) | 1377 Fell Street, San Francisco, CA 94117 | Yes | Full 9 services. The big-city fallback with a kiosk — same services, plus a kiosk. |
The rule of thumb: if your task needs a kiosk, your fallbacks are Redwood City, Daly City or San Francisco — never Hayward and never San Mateo itself. If your task needs a counter, all five do the work, so pick by availability. And a warning about reading official pages: the Hayward page’s HTML contains two “Kiosk Available” strings, but both belong to the Pleasanton and Oakland Coliseum nearby cards — Hayward itself has no kiosk, no kiosk headline, and no Self Service Terminals in its services list. The same trap caught Fremont in this series. Always check the office’s own services list, not the badges on its neighbours’ cards.
Eleven Peninsula cities have no field office at all, and readers search for one in each of them. All eleven were checked on dmv.ca.gov on build day and all eleven return “Page not found”: South San Francisco, Belmont, Burlingame, San Carlos, Foster City, Menlo Park, Millbrae, San Bruno, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay and Palo Alto. Their residents use San Mateo, Redwood City or Daly City — and the grocery kiosks in section 5. Two notes on the list: Millbrae has the BART/Caltrain station, not a DMV office, and Menlo Park residents use Redwood City (Palo Alto itself has no office either). Any directory address for a “Belmont DMV office” or a “South San Francisco DMV office” is unverified directory data, not an official office — do not drive to it.
5Kiosks near San Mateo: the 24-hour option
San Mateo’s missing kiosk is not a problem once you know where the real ones are — two of them never close. All three grocery kiosks below come from the San Mateo office page’s own nearby list, verified November 4, 2026, plus the kiosk inside the Redwood City field office:
| Kiosk | Address | Hours | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safeway in Belmont | 1100 El Camino Real, Belmont, CA 94002 | Open 24 hours | The closest 24-hour kiosk to the San Mateo office — renewals and records at 2 AM, on a Sunday, whenever the office is closed. |
| Safeway in Redwood City | 1071 El Camino, Redwood City, CA 94063 | Open 24 hours | The second 24-hour kiosk in the cluster; pairs with the Redwood City field-office kiosk a short drive away. |
| Safeway in South San Francisco | 2255 Gellert Blvd., South San Francisco, CA 94080 | Mon–Sun 5:00 AM – 1:00 AM | The north-side kiosk for Daly City and South San Francisco readers; nearly round the clock. |
| Redwood City field office (on-site kiosk) | 300 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City, CA 94063 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5 | The only kiosk in the cluster that sits inside a full-service office — use it when the errand might turn into a counter visit. |
The count, stated carefully: zero kiosks in San Mateo proper, three grocery kiosks on the office page’s own nearby list, plus the Redwood City field-office kiosk. Never “three kiosks in San Mateo” — the Belmont and Redwood City kiosks are in Belmont and Redwood City. Kiosks are self-serve stations where you can complete certain registration services and request driver or vehicle records; the range of services varies by kiosk location. In practice that means registration renewals, planned non-operation filings, and driver/vehicle record copies. What a kiosk cannot do is the whole reason the office exists: no appointments, no drive tests, no knowledge tests, no REAL ID issuance, no first-time licenses. See our California DMV kiosk guide for the full list of what kiosks can and cannot do.
The decision the page must teach is simple. Registration renewal or a record copy? A 24-hour grocery kiosk beats a weekday office visit — it is open when the office is closed, including weekends, and there is no line to join. REAL ID, first license, drive test, title transfer, or anything that needs a human at a counter? The kiosk cannot do it — book the Amphlett Boulevard office. And one more distinction: the Redwood City field-office kiosk follows office hours, while the grocery kiosks follow store hours — a 24-hour Safeway kiosk is the only option in this cluster that works on a Sunday.
6DMV business partners in San Mateo
DMV business partners are businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, often with much shorter wait times — and additional fees may apply. They handle registration-type work only; they do not issue licenses, run tests, or process REAL ID. The six listings below are exactly the partners on the San Mateo office page’s own nearby list, read on November 4, 2026. Ask the price before handing over paperwork, and call before visiting: two of the listings show every day as closed, which reads as a data quirk, not real hours.
| Partner | Address & phone | Hours (as listed on dmv.ca.gov) |
|---|---|---|
| EV Auto Service LLC | 110 S Claremont St, San Mateo, CA 94401 · 1-650-293-7738 | Mon 9 AM–6 PM; Tue 9 AM–8 PM; Wed 9:30 AM–8 PM; Thu 9 AM–8 PM; Fri 9 AM–6 PM; Sat 9 AM–3 PM; Sun closed |
| Emc Insurance Services Inc | 414 East 3rd Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401 · 1-650-342-1801 | Listed as “Mon–Sun Closed” on dmv.ca.gov — a data quirk, not real hours. Name, address and phone only; call before visiting. |
| Emc Insurance Services | 320 E Third Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401 · 1-650-342-6082 | Listed as “Mon–Sun Closed” on dmv.ca.gov — same quirk. Name, address and phone only; call before visiting. |
| Lightning Speed Auto Registration Inc – San Mateo | 89 43rd Ave, San Mateo, CA 94403 · 1-650-454-9151 | Mon–Sat 11:00 AM–7:30 PM. Sunday is shown on dmv.ca.gov as “12:00 PM — 6:00 AM”, which is not a plausible Sunday window — call before visiting on a Sunday. |
| Tammie Pereira Insurance Services Inc | 1606 S El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA 94402 · 1-650-655-2022 | Mon–Sat 10:00 AM–6:00 PM; Sun closed |
| Timeless Firm LLC | 2095 Palm Ave, San Mateo, CA 94403 · 1-650-733-3638 | Mon–Fri 9:00 AM–6:00 PM. Saturday is shown on dmv.ca.gov as “9:00 AM — 1:00 AM”, which is not a plausible Saturday window — call before visiting on a Saturday. |
Two discipline notes. First, no “miles from the San Mateo DMV” figures appear anywhere on this page: the DMV’s partner-finder results are centred on the office’s own nearby slice, not on a measured distance, so addresses, hours and phones are all that is printed. Second, the partner list on the page is the page’s own slice — a research pass named two further businesses for San Mateo that do not appear on this slice, and they are deliberately not printed here. If a business is not on the official page, it is not presented as a DMV partner.
7Getting there: Caltrain, SamTrans, BART — and parking
The office sits at 425 N Amphlett Boulevard, in the North Central part of the city, and the honest transit picture is: rail gets you close, the bus finishes the trip, and the last leg needs a trip planner. No source verifies a specific stop’s walking distance to the office, so this section names what is verified and leaves the rest to the planner — no invented walk times, no timetables, no stop-level instructions.
Caltrain is the rail option. San Mateo station, at 385 1st Ave downtown, is the nearest of the city’s three Caltrain stations (San Mateo, Hayward Park, Hillsdale) on the Peninsula Corridor between San Francisco and San Jose. Caltrain’s own listing puts the station about 3,945 feet — roughly three-quarters of a mile — in a straight line from the office address. That is a straight-line distance only: no source states a walk time or a walking route, so this page does not print one. Hayward Park station is the next-nearest, about 1.9 miles in a straight line to the south. Framing for your trip: take Caltrain to San Mateo station, then check the 511 or SamTrans trip planner for the last leg to 425 N Amphlett Blvd before you go.
SamTrans is the bus option, with a limit. No source confirms a specific SamTrans route or stop on N Amphlett Boulevard itself, so no route number is printed here as “serving the DMV office”. What is verified is that routes ECR (Daly City BART to Palo Alto Transit Center), 250 (San Mateo Caltrain to College of San Mateo) and 292 (San Francisco to SFO to Hillsdale via San Mateo) serve downtown San Mateo and San Mateo Caltrain station. Use those to reach the station area, then the trip planner for the stop nearest the office. SamTrans information is 1-800-660-4287, and SamTrans has schedule changes effective November 15, 2026 on several routes — check current schedules before you travel.
BART does not serve San Mateo city directly. The nearest BART station is Millbrae Station, 200 N Rollins Rd in Millbrae — BART’s Peninsula terminus, served by the Red Line on weekdays before 9 p.m. and the Yellow Line at nights and weekends, with a cross-platform transfer to Caltrain in the same station. From Millbrae, take Caltrain southbound to San Mateo station, then the trip planner for the last leg. Anyone telling a San Mateo DMV visitor to “take BART to San Mateo” is sending them to the wrong city.
Parking: no claim is made on this page. No official or credible source describes the Amphlett office’s lot, capacity, street parking, or accessibility spaces — even the main directory page for this office answers the parking question with “check signage on arrival”. Do not trust any directory’s parking description for this office. Arrive early, allow time to park, and check signage when you get there.
8The drive test at San Mateo
“Testing” is on the office’s official services list, so behind-the-wheel drive tests are bookable here as a separate appointment type in the official scheduler — but the test itself is the same statewide test everywhere in California, and this section sticks to what the California Driver Handbook actually says. There is no published turn-by-turn route for this office, and this page does not invent one. Third-party sellers offer “test-route familiarization” for San Mateo, which is evidence that test-takers want route familiarity — it is not a route to publish.
The test has two parts. First, the Pre-Drive Safety Check: the examiner checks whether the vehicle meets DMV minimum safety standards and whether you know how to operate it — 17 items in the Handbook, including a driver window that opens, an unobstructed windshield, at least two mirrors (one outside left), working front and rear turn signals, working brake lights, tires with at least 1/32-inch tread in any two adjacent grooves and no bald tires, a foot brake with at least one inch of clearance from the floorboard, a horn audible from 200 feet, a working parking brake, working seat belts, arm signals for left turn, right turn and slowing/stopping, and locating the headlights, wipers, defroster and emergency flashers. Failure of the mechanical items means the test is rescheduled; being unable to locate or demonstrate four or more of the control items is unsatisfactory. Second, the Driving Performance Evaluation (DPE): behind-the-wheel driving with a DMV examiner — left and right turns, stops at intersections, lane changes, straight-line reversing, curbside parking, traffic checks, and space management. Freeway driving is not part of the standard DPE unless the examiner includes it.
Bring the instruction permit (or existing license), a licensed driver to accompany you — age 25 or older if you are a minor — current vehicle registration, and proof of insurance for the test vehicle. The examiner also checks the car itself: brakes (foot and parking), horn, turn signals front and back, brake lights, tires, unobstructed windshield, working doors and windows, a driver-side window that rolls down, seat belts, two mirrors, two plates with current registration, defroster, hazard lights, headlights, and wipers. What loses points everywhere in California: missed mirror and blind-spot checks before lane changes, rolling stops, following too closely, speed mismatched to conditions (not just the posted limit), and pedestrian awareness failures at crosswalks and intersections. Residential segments near any office — parked cars, cross-street traffic, pedestrians, school zones — are where test-takers most often lose points, not on wide arterials. After a failed test, a waiting period applies before retesting and the number of attempts is limited; the scheduler shows when you can rebook, and this page prints no specific wait or attempt numbers without a Handbook citation.
One local note, honestly framed. Menlo-Atherton High School’s student paper reported in 2018 that the San Mateo test route passes school zones and that exceeding 25 mph there means an automatic fail; students quoted in the same article called the route “pretty simplistic” and the examiner “pretty relaxed”. A driving-school source quoted elsewhere calls the office one of the harder Bay Area offices — dense streets, strict examiners. The two reputations conflict, and the second source reaches us only through a scraper mirror, so this page publishes no route, no pass rate, and no “easiest” or “hardest” ranking. The durable point is the statewide rule: school zones are 25 mph (Vehicle Code §22352) — treat every school zone at 25 mph or less. And the same 2018 article’s other claim, that the Redwood City office “is open on Saturdays”, is stale and wrong — do not repeat it.
For the permit side, see our driving test appointment guide and driving test tips. Remember the timing rule: knowledge tests are generally not offered after 4:30 p.m., so do not book the last slot of the day for a permit test.
9What to bring: REAL ID, licence and registration
The single most common reason for a second trip is a missing document, so the rule is simple: originals only — photocopies are never accepted — and check the list the night before. What you need depends on the visit, but the patterns are the same at every California field office:
- First REAL ID: one proof of identity (valid US passport or passport card, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or similar); your Social Security number, provided on the application; and TWO different documents proving California residency showing your first and last name and the mailing address that will appear on the card (mortgage bill, home utility or cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, bank statement, or similar). If the true full name on your document does not match your current true full name, bring additional name-change documentation. A non-REAL ID card reads “Federal Limits Apply” and cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025. See our REAL ID appointment guide for the full checklist.
- First licence or instruction permit: proof of identity, proof of residency, and — for a permit — the completed application with a parent or guardian signature if you are under 18. Start the application online first for a confirmation code.
- Title transfer: the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office.
- Registration: the registration renewal notice where applicable, proof of insurance, and smog certification where required. Simple renewals go online or to a kiosk instead — see section 5.
- Disabled placard: the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional — one of the few counter services with no online substitute.
Run the full documents checklist before you leave, and confirm the visit is needed at all: if the task is a routine renewal, record copy, or replacement, the counter will not do it — online, kiosk, partner, or mail is the route. If the task does need the office, the checklist plus an appointment is the whole preparation. Nothing else on this page is a document requirement — no fee is quoted here, because fee line items are gated until re-verified on dmv.ca.gov, and the only money fact that is safe to state is that booking is free.
10San Mateo, the city — and the mistakes to avoid
San Mateo (population 105,661 in the 2020 Census) is the most populous city in San Mateo County, on the San Francisco Peninsula about halfway between San Francisco and San Jose — about 20 miles south of San Francisco. It was incorporated on September 4, 1894 (the vote was September 3: 150 in favour, 25 against). It borders Burlingame to the north, Hillsborough to the west, San Francisco Bay and Foster City to the east, and Belmont to the south. The county’s population is 764,442 (2020 Census). The office serves the mid-Peninsula — San Mateo, Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City and Hillsborough — on geographic adjacency only: the DMV does not assign catchment areas, so this page does not claim San Mateo is the “official” office for any city. No San Mateo-specific closure or renovation appears in the DMV’s 2026 news releases; the office is listed as Active with normal hours.
Six confusions this page kills, in one place:
- San Mateo is not the county seat. Redwood City is — and Redwood City’s office is the closest full-service fallback with a kiosk. One low-quality events guide wrongly calls San Mateo the county seat; never use that line.
- Eleven nearby cities have no field office. South San Francisco, Belmont, Burlingame, San Carlos, Foster City, Menlo Park, Millbrae, San Bruno, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay and Palo Alto are all 404 on dmv.ca.gov. Their residents use San Mateo, Redwood City or Daly City.
- Redwood City, Daly City and San Francisco are not the same as San Mateo on kiosks. They have on-site kiosks; San Mateo does not. Hayward is the same as San Mateo (no kiosk). Check the services list before you drive.
- Partner addresses are not the office. EV Auto Service LLC (110 S Claremont St), Emc Insurance (414 East 3rd Ave and 320 E Third Ave), Lightning Speed (89 43rd Ave), Tammie Pereira (1606 S El Camino Real) and Timeless Firm (2095 Palm Ave) are businesses in San Mateo, not the DMV office at 425 N Amphlett Blvd. The Safeway kiosks are grocery stores in Belmont, Redwood City and South San Francisco.
- A kiosk is not a mini-office and a partner is not an office. Kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records only. Partners handle registration-type work for an extra fee. Neither issues REAL ID, runs tests, or issues first-time licenses.
- No field office is open on Saturday, and BART does not stop in San Mateo. Every office in this cluster is closed Saturday and Sunday. BART’s nearest station is Millbrae; transfer there to Caltrain for San Mateo station.
Finally, what the competitors get wrong, so you can weigh what you read elsewhere. The main directory page for this office (dmvca.info) is five months stale — “last verified June 5, 2026” — and its “best time to visit” advice (“walk-ins face the longest waits mid-month and on Mondays”) is generic template text identical on its Redwood City page, with no source and nothing office-specific; its parking section is an explicit non-answer, it never states plainly that San Mateo has no on-site kiosk, never names the nearest kiosks, never lists the partners, and carries no REAL ID checklist, no holiday note, and no Get in Line explanation. A drivers-ed sales page shows a “3.3 (944)” rating for the office with no source named and claims you can take the permit test online without the eligibility limits. A directory lists the eight services correctly but prints a confusing “Work time: 9:00 AM — 5:00 PM CLOSED” header. A law firm’s page claims more than 60 field offices are open on Saturdays. And scraper mirrors rank for “san mateo dmv driving test route” with garbled copied content — including a UK phone number on a San Mateo page. None of it is used here. Every office fact on this page traces to dmv.ca.gov, read on November 4, 2026.
11Frequently asked questions
San Mateo: the straight answers to the questions Peninsula residents actually ask — answered from the official office page, read November 4, 2026.
What are the San Mateo DMV’s hours?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. All field offices are also closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for Veterans Day. State holidays can change hours — confirm on the official office page before you go.
Is the San Mateo DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?
No — the field office is closed both days. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, the grocery kiosks run daily instead: the Safeway kiosks in Belmont (1100 El Camino Real) and Redwood City (1071 El Camino) are open 24 hours, and the Safeway kiosk in South San Francisco (2255 Gellert Blvd.) runs Monday–Sunday 5:00 AM–1:00 AM. REAL ID, licenses, and drive tests need the office on a weekday.
What is the San Mateo DMV address?
425 N Amphlett Boulevard, San Mateo, CA 94401, in San Mateo County. The same address is printed on the Redwood City office page’s nearby list, which corroborates it. Do not confuse it with the partner businesses in San Mateo (for example EV Auto Service at 110 S Claremont St) or with the Safeway kiosks in Belmont, Redwood City and South San Francisco — none of those is the field office. The official office page is dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/san-mateo/.
What is the phone number for the San Mateo DMV?
Use the DMV’s statewide line: 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). The San Mateo office page publishes no office-specific number, and no “direct San Mateo DMV number” from a directory is verified — use the statewide line. Do not use a 1-415 number shown on a business-partner listing for San Mateo; it is a partner-page number, not the office’s.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Book first. A field-office visit is booked on the official scheduler, and the drive test is a separate appointment type — book the right one. If you did not book ahead, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the same-day Get in Line check-in (verified live November 4, 2026: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7:50 AM–4:00 PM, Wednesday 8:50 AM–4:00 PM). Do not expect a true walk-up counter. And note that routine renewals, record copies, and replacement licenses get no counter service at all — those go online, to a kiosk, to a partner, or by mail.
What services does the San Mateo DMV offer — does it do driving tests?
Eight services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov: Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates, Permits, & Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, and Request miscellaneous original documents. Yes, it does behind-the-wheel drive tests — book the drive-test appointment type, not a general visit. Motorcycle skills-test and CDL road-test availability are not itemized for this office on its official page, so check the scheduler rather than assuming either.
Does the San Mateo DMV have a self-service kiosk?
No — the San Mateo field office has no kiosk on site. Its official services list omits Self Service Terminals and its page carries no kiosk headline. The nearest kiosks are the Safeway kiosk in Belmont (1100 El Camino Real, open 24 hours), the Safeway kiosk in Redwood City (1071 El Camino, open 24 hours), the Safeway kiosk in South San Francisco (2255 Gellert Blvd., Monday–Sunday 5:00 AM–1:00 AM), and the kiosk inside the Redwood City field office (300 Brewster Avenue, office hours). Kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records only — not REAL ID, drive tests, knowledge tests, or first-time licenses.
What should I bring for a REAL ID, licence, or registration visit?
Originals only — photocopies are never accepted. For a first REAL ID: one proof of identity (valid US passport or passport card, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or similar); your Social Security number on the application; and TWO different documents proving California residency showing your first and last name and the mailing address that will appear on the card (mortgage bill, home utility or cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, bank statement, or similar). For a title transfer: the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Run our documents checklist the night before.
Is there a DMV field office in South San Francisco, Belmont, or Burlingame?
No — none of the three has a field office. South San Francisco, Belmont, Burlingame, San Carlos, Foster City, Menlo Park, Millbrae, San Bruno, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay and Palo Alto all return “Page not found” on dmv.ca.gov. Their residents use the San Mateo office (425 N Amphlett Boulevard) or Redwood City / Daly City, plus the grocery kiosks — the 24-hour Safeway kiosk in Belmont is the closest kiosk to Belmont itself.
If the San Mateo DMV is fully booked, which nearby office should I try instead?
Choose by task, not by distance. For full services with a kiosk: Redwood City (300 Brewster Avenue, full nine services, kiosk on site) to the south, Daly City (1500 Sullivan Avenue, full nine services, kiosk on site) to the north, or San Francisco’s Fell Street office (1377 Fell Street, full nine services, kiosk on site). For counter work only, Hayward (150 Jackson Street) works — it has the same eight services as San Mateo and no kiosk, so do not send a kiosk task there. Any office serves any California resident regardless of address.
Can I renew my vehicle registration at a kiosk or a DMV business partner instead of going to the San Mateo office?
Yes, for renewals and record copies — the 24-hour Safeway kiosks in Belmont (1100 El Camino Real) and Redwood City (1071 El Camino) and the South San Francisco Safeway kiosk (2255 Gellert Blvd., 5:00 AM–1:00 AM) do that work, as do the DMV business partners in San Mateo such as EV Auto Service LLC (110 S Claremont St, 1-650-293-7738), though partners charge additional fees — ask the price first. No for REAL ID, first licences, drive tests, or title transfers: those need the office itself.
How do I get to the San Mateo DMV by bus or train, and is there parking information available?
Take Caltrain to San Mateo station (385 1st Ave, downtown), then check the 511 or SamTrans trip planner for the last leg to 425 N Amphlett Blvd — no published walk time exists, so verify the route before you go. SamTrans routes ECR, 250 and 292 serve downtown San Mateo and San Mateo station; no specific route or stop on N Amphlett Blvd itself is verified. BART does not stop in San Mateo itself — the nearest BART station is Millbrae (200 N Rollins Rd); transfer there to Caltrain for San Mateo station. On parking, this page makes no claim: no official source describes the office’s lot, capacity, or street parking, so check signage on arrival and allow extra time.
Ready to book?
Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the Amphlett Boulevard office for San Mateo, Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City and Hillsborough visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test, and to use the 24-hour Safeway kiosks in Belmont and Redwood City for renewals instead of driving to an office with no kiosk. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go — the next closure is Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026.
