Torrance DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide (2026)
The California DMV field office on West 220th Street — the full-service South Bay office with nine counter services, a self-serve kiosk on site, and eight grocery-store kiosks nearby. It is also the office whose neighbours prove why every office must be checked on its own page: two nearby offices currently show as closed every day, one nearby listing is a commercial test centre only, and three neighbouring cities have no field office at all. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.
Verified against dmv.ca.gov: November 2, 2026 · Independent guide — not affiliated with the California DMV or dmv.ca.gov. Booking always happens on the official DMV scheduler; this page helps you prepare.
1Torrance’s South Bay anchor office
Torrance is a city in Los Angeles County, in the South Bay region, and its DMV field office sits on West 220th Street, just east of Western Avenue. The office’s own page on dmv.ca.gov labels it a field office, not a kiosk, not a partner, and not a driver-safety office, and its photo on dmv.ca.gov is captioned “Torrance Field Office”. That label matters, because it tells you what kind of visit this is: a full counter-service office where licensing, testing, title transfers, registration, plates and placards, replacements, and records are all listed as services provided, plus a self-serve kiosk on site. Readers often assume a smaller-city office is a limited-service site. On the official listing, Torrance is not — and the comparison table in section 4 proves the point, because a facility a few miles away really does list a shorter menu on its own page, and two offices in the same cluster currently show as closed every day. If your errand is on Torrance’s nine-category list, this office can handle it at the counter, subject to the appointment rules in section 3.
Torrance is the South Bay anchor of its cluster. It is the office its neighbours’ pages keep naming first or near-first in their nearby lists: San Pedro names Torrance first, Long Beach names it among its South Bay neighbours, and the AAA Torrance partner page names it first. That pattern is not a ranking, but it is useful evidence of how the DMV’s own system groups these offices: when a South Bay reader cannot get a Torrance appointment, the system’s own alternatives are Long Beach, Hawthorne, and Compton — not some second Torrance office, because there is only one field office in Torrance on dmv.ca.gov. Torrance is also the office that serves the largest single-city catchment in this cluster: the city had 147,067 residents in the 2020 census (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts), and it is the only field office serving not just Torrance but also Carson, Redondo Beach, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula, three neighbouring communities with no field office of their own on dmv.ca.gov. That is why this one office carries the whole South Bay’s counter traffic, and why the Long Beach, Hawthorne, and Compton fallbacks in section 4 matter. Torrance Unified lists six active public high schools with 7,342 students enrolled in 2025–26 (California Department of Education directory, as reported by a drivers-ed guide) — which is why the teen permit angle matters for this page more than for most office pages: thousands of Torrance high-schoolers funnel through this one office for permits and drive tests.
This page is an independent guide, not the DMV, and it cannot book for you, cannot see live slot availability, and never charges for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on November 2, 2026. Where a fact could not be verified on an official source, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no street-by-street drive-test route, no motorcycle-testing claim, no commercial-testing claim, no parking description, no wait-time minutes, and no review numbers appear anywhere below. Those omissions are deliberate. The DMV’s office page publishes none of them for Torrance, and a guide that invents them would be less useful, not more, because a reader who plans around an invented parking description or an invented wait time arrives with false confidence. What this page does give you is everything the official listing does publish, checked office by office, plus the traps the listings reveal: two nearby offices closed all fortnight, a commercial test centre that looks like a general office, three cities with no office at all, a Wednesday late start, a Veterans Day closure, and grocery-store kiosk hours that must never be mistaken for office hours.
The single most useful thing to know before anything else is the shape of the week — plus one dated exception. Torrance is open Monday through Friday and closed on Saturday and Sunday, and Wednesday opens an hour late, at 9:00 am instead of 8:00 am. And Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed entirely, because it is Veterans Day — the closure shows on the official Torrance calendar itself, in the same two-week window this page prints. If you remember nothing else from this page, remember the Wednesday rule, the weekend rule, and the November 11 closure, because those three facts answer the largest share of “is it open?” questions about this office, and getting any one of them wrong costs a wasted trip. The full table, with the two-week calendar that confirms it, is in section 2. The rest of the page is organised the way a reader actually uses an office guide: hours and services first, then how to book, then the honest comparison with nearby offices, then the twelve questions readers ask most, then the kiosk cluster, the partner distinction, drive tests, transit, what to bring, and the timing traps — in that order, so you can stop reading as soon as your question is answered.
2Hours, services & what this office offers
Closed Wednesday, November 11, 2026 — Veterans Day. The office reopens Thursday, November 12 at 8:00 am. This closure appears on the official Torrance calendar itself, in the same two-week window as the regular pattern below, and every office page checked for this guide shows the same November 11 closure. A reader who only reads the pattern table would assume Wednesday, November 11 opens at 9:00 am and would drive to a closed office — so this notice sits above the table on purpose. The AAA Torrance partner branch stays open that day, 9:00 am–5:00 pm (see the partners section below), but it handles registration-type work only, not licensing or testing.
The weekly pattern is the standard California field-office pattern, confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page, which prints a two-week calendar (November 1 – November 14, 2026) showing the same pattern in both weeks — the strongest form of this verification, because it is not a single-day snapshot. The calendar and the standing weekly pattern agree exactly, and the nearby lists of six neighbouring offices repeat the same pattern for Torrance, so there is no ambiguity to resolve and no conflicting source to reconcile, except for the November 11 holiday closure flagged above:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Tuesday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Wednesday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late) |
| Thursday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Saturday – Sunday | Closed |
| Wednesday, November 11, 2026 | Closed (Veterans Day) |
The Wednesday quirk is the detail that catches the most people: every other weekday opens at 8:00 AM, but Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM. Do not show up at 8:00 on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage — you will wait outside for an hour. And do not let a directory site tell you Torrance is closed on Mondays: one guide still prints exactly that claim, and it is false against Torrance’s own page, which shows Monday, November 2 and Monday, November 9 both as 8:00 am–5:00 pm. A Torrance reader searching “Torrance DMV Monday” could otherwise skip a perfectly open Monday, so this page names the error pattern plainly: trust the DMV’s own calendar, which shows Torrance open on Mondays, over any directory that says otherwise. Weekends are closed, full stop, and this page states that explicitly rather than leaving the weekend blank, because a blank weekend reads as “unknown” and an explicit “closed” answers the single most-asked weekend question about this office. No field office in this cluster lists Saturday hours, so be sceptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Torrance — and do not let a partner’s Saturday hours or a kiosk’s weekend hours be misread as a field-office Saturday opening. The eight grocery-store kiosks in the kiosk section below are open on weekends; the Torrance field office is not, and that distinction is the difference between a successful Saturday errand at a kiosk and a wasted Saturday trip to a closed office. One more calendar caution: the DMV page shows a rolling two-week calendar, not just a standing pattern. Hours above are the regular weekly pattern as listed on dmv.ca.gov; check the office page before a holiday-week visit, because holiday closures override the regular pattern, and this page does not print a holiday list as Torrance’s own schedule because the office page does not publish one.
The services list below is reproduced verbatim from the Torrance page’s Services Provided block, with one plain sentence of explanation per category. The explanations stay inside the label — they do not invent sub-services the page does not list:
| Service (as listed on dmv.ca.gov) | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|
| Licensing Services | Driver licence and ID card business at the counter, including applications and related licensing transactions. The page lists the category; it does not enumerate every licence class, so do not assume a specialist licence transaction is covered without checking the DMV’s guidance for that transaction. |
| Testing | Testing is listed as a service. That is the whole verified claim. It must not be read as a drive-test route, a motorcycle-testing promise, or a commercial-testing promise — none of those specifics appears on the Torrance page. Behind-the-wheel tests are booked through the DMV appointment system; see section 3 and the drive-test section below. The DMV’s official Driving Test Sites page lists Torrance among the offices where a noncommercial Class A or Class B driving test can be booked by calling 1-800-777-0133. |
| Title Transfers | Transferring a vehicle title into a new owner’s name at the counter. |
| Registration | Vehicle registration business at the office — distinct from the kiosk and online registration routes, which suit simpler renewals. |
| Plates, Permits, & Placards | Plates, permits, and placards as a grouped category. If your errand spans two of these (for example, plates and a placard), bring the documents for both, because the counter treats them as separate items even though the DMV groups them in one line. |
| Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged | Replacements for lost, stolen, or damaged items within the categories above. |
| Records | Driver and vehicle record requests handled at the office, alongside the online and kiosk routes for records. |
| Request miscellaneous original documents | The DMV’s own catch-all label, reproduced verbatim. Do not paraphrase it into specific document names the page does not list; if your document is unusual, call the statewide line first and describe it exactly. |
| Self Service Terminals | The on-site self-serve kiosk. See the kiosk section below for what kiosks can and cannot do, and for the eight grocery-store kiosks in the South Bay cluster. |
Payments at the field office are exactly six methods, verbatim from the Torrance page: Cash, Check, Credit Card, Debit Card, Digital Wallet, and Money order. The page states: “DMV field offices accept Cash, Check, Credit Card, Debit Card, Digital Wallet, and Money order.” Bring a payment method from that list, and do not assume a seventh method is accepted because a partner or a kiosk accepts it — partners may apply additional fees (the DMV’s own disclaimer), and kiosks accept Cash, Credit Card, and Debit Card only, which is the kiosk payments list, not the field-office list. Mixing those three lists into one table is one of the easiest ways a guide misleads a reader, so this page keeps them separate: field office (six methods, above), kiosk (three methods, kiosk section), partner (additional fees may apply, partner section).
Before you commit to a counter visit at all, use the DMV’s own framing, which appears on its office pages: most services are available online with the DMV or with a DMV-authorized partner. That is the strongest, officially-sourced answer to “do I even need to go in?” If your errand is a straightforward renewal, a record request, or a replacement that the online system or a kiosk handles, the online or kiosk route saves the trip entirely — and the kiosk section below lists the machines that can do it. The counter visit earns its place when your transaction needs an in-person step: a test, a title transfer with complications, a licensing transaction the online system will not accept, or any errand where you need a person to look at an unusual document. The appointment section that follows is written for that counter visit, not for the online route, and it is careful about what it does and does not promise.
3Booking an appointment here
Book on the DMV’s official scheduler on dmv.ca.gov, and pick Torrance as the location. That sentence is the whole booking instruction, and everything else in this section is about not getting the details wrong around it. First, choose the right appointment type in the scheduler. The DMV’s appointment system distinguishes a field-office appointment from a drive-test appointment, and the distinction matters: the DMV’s own published “Ask DMV” guidance states that field offices require an appointment for a drive test, made online or by calling 1-800-777-0133. That statement reaches this page through the DMV’s published Q&A rather than through live scheduler text, so treat it as DMV guidance and confirm it in the scheduler itself — but do not walk in expecting a road test without a drive-test booking, because that is the one visit type where a general appointment is the wrong ticket. For a general counter visit, book the general appointment type, and bring the confirmation details for any online application or appointment with you. Search by ZIP code 90501 or by “Torrance” and pick the 220th Street office — not a partner address, and not a kiosk address, because neither of those is the field office.
Second, never plan around a promised slot. This page does not promise a same-day slot, does not quote a booking lead time such as “slots open X weeks out”, and does not describe a reschedule button, because none of that is live data a static guide can verify — availability changes by the hour, and a guide that prints a lead time is printing yesterday’s scheduler state as if it were a rule. The honest formulation is: open the official scheduler, pick Torrance, and see live availability. If Torrance is full on the day you need, check Long Beach, Hawthorne, or Compton in the same scheduler before you give up on the week, because the comparison table in section 4 exists precisely for that moment — and because hours will not help you choose between them (they are identical), the choice turns on kiosk availability, services listed, and which office actually has a slot. Do not widen the search to San Pedro or Inglewood until their own pages show them open again, and do not widen it to Gardena for anything except a commercial drive test. Offices serve all California residents regardless of address, so a Torrance resident is not limited to Torrance. Check back, too: cancellations open slots. Third, if the scheduler defeats you, the statewide phone line 1-800-777-0133 is the DMV’s published contact route for appointment help. It is the statewide line, not a Torrance direct number — the Torrance page lists no office-specific phone, email, or fax — so do not expect the person who answers to be sitting in the Torrance office, and do not quote the number to anyone as “the Torrance DMV number”. Our DMV phone number guide covers the statewide line in more detail.
Fourth, check the calendar twice: once in the scheduler, and once on the office page. The scheduler shows availability; the office page shows the two-week calendar and any special closure in the window. A holiday-week visit is the case where those two checks disagree most often, because the regular Monday-to-Friday pattern is suspended by holidays that the scheduler may or may not surface clearly. This page’s rule is simple: if either source shows a closure, believe the closure. The week of November 9–13, 2026 is the live example: Veterans Day closes the office on Wednesday, November 11, and a reader who books only by the regular pattern would arrive at a closed office. Fifth, a note on the wait-time widgets you will see on the office page. They render as “Closed” when the office is closed — for example, when the page is fetched in the early morning Pacific time — and that is a snapshot of the widget, not a statistic about how long you will wait. Older cached copies of the Torrance page show stale hourly readings from earlier days; those are snapshots too, and this page deliberately does not reproduce them. Never convert a widget snapshot into “the wait is X minutes”, and never let a third-party wait-time site override the official page: no wait-time minutes appear on this page, because none is published for Torrance in a form a guide can honestly quote. Our DMV wait times guide explains the same point in general. Finally, a note on same-day check-in: an older cached copy of the Torrance page shows a “Get in Line” element, but that system was discontinued around March 2026 and a QR check-in succeeded it in April 2026, and the current Torrance fetch does not show Get in Line as a live option. Do not plan around the old system; check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option.
4Nearby DMV offices: the South Bay decision table
All open offices below share the same weekly hours pattern as Torrance (Monday–Tuesday and Thursday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday closed) as of November 2, 2026, and all show the same November 11 closure. The hours sameness is itself a finding: a reader cannot pick between these offices on hours, so this comparison turns on kiosk availability, services listed, appointment availability — and, in this cluster, unusually, whether the office is actually open at all. Each row below was read on that office’s own dmv.ca.gov page. Do not copy hours from Torrance into these rows in your head — each row was verified separately, and the two closed rows in this table are the proof that separate verification matters.
| Office | Address (dmv.ca.gov) | Hours | Kiosk on site | Services listed on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Torrance (this office) | 1785 W 220th Street, Torrance, CA 90501 | Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5; Wed 9–5; Sat–Sun closed; Wed Nov 11 closed | Yes | Full 9 categories |
| Long Beach | 3700 East Willow Street, Long Beach, CA 90815 | Same pattern; Wed Nov 11 closed | Yes | Full 9 categories |
| Hawthorne | 3700 W El Segundo Boulevard, Hawthorne, CA 90250 | Same pattern; Wed Nov 11 closed | Yes | Full 9 categories |
| Compton | 2111 South Santa Fe Avenue, Compton, CA 90221 | Same pattern; Wed Nov 11 closed | Yes | Full 9 categories |
| San Pedro — DO NOT TRAVEL | 1511 N Gaffey Street, San Pedro, CA 90731 | Mon–Sun Closed (all 14 days, Nov 1 – Nov 14) | Listed, but office closed | Full 9 listed — but the calendar overrides the list |
| Gardena Commercial Drive Test Center | 14825 S Avalon Blvd, Gardena, CA 90248 | Mon–Tue 7–4; Wed 8–4; Thu–Fri 7–4; Sat–Sun closed; Wed Nov 11 closed | No kiosk | 4 categories only — Testing, Registration, Records, miscellaneous original documents |
| Inglewood — DO NOT TRAVEL | 621 N La Brea Ave, Inglewood, CA 90302 | Mon–Sun Closed (all 14 days, Nov 1 – Nov 14) | Listed, but office closed | Full 9 listed — but the calendar overrides the list |
Long Beach is the primary “if Torrance is full” alternative, and the strongest fallback in this cluster. Its own page shows the East Willow Street address, the standard pattern including the November 11 closure, the kiosk callout, “Self Service Terminals” in services, and the identical six-method payments list, and its services list is identical in categories to Torrance’s. If your errand is anything on the nine-category list, Long Beach is a like-for-like substitute for Torrance, and the only decision left is which office has an appointment slot. Our own site already covers it — see our Long Beach DMV guide — so the comparison table can forward-link to it. Its nearby list also supplies further kiosk entries for the kiosk section below. One address trap to avoid in this cluster: Hawthorne’s address is “3700 W El Segundo Boulevard” and Long Beach’s is “3700 East Willow Street” — two different offices that both start with 3700. Do not mix them up when you type an address into the scheduler.
Hawthorne is the closest full-service alternative on the north side. Its own page shows the El Segundo Boulevard address, the standard pattern including the November 11 closure, the kiosk callout, the full nine services, and the identical six-method payments list. Its nearby list, in turn, names Torrance — the two offices are each other’s nearest neighbour on the DMV’s own listing. Hawthorne is the primary “if Torrance is full” alternative for readers north of Torrance, and the only alternative in this cluster that a drivers-ed guide ranks second by distance. If your errand is anything on the nine-category list, Hawthorne is a like-for-like substitute for Torrance, and the only decision left is which office has an appointment slot.
Compton is the northeast full-service alternative. Its own page shows the South Santa Fe Avenue address, the standard pattern including the November 11 closure, the kiosk callout, the full nine services, and the identical six-method payments list. Compton is the “full nine services plus kiosk, northeast” row — a genuine fallback when Torrance, Long Beach, and Hawthorne are all full, and proof that Torrance’s menu is the cluster norm rather than the exception. Its value in this table is as the third open full-service fallback; a Torrance reader who has tried Torrance, Long Beach, and Hawthorne still has a real fourth option before crossing town.
San Pedro — do not travel. San Pedro’s own page is the single most important negative finding on this page. The page still carries the kiosk callout and the full nine-category services list, so a careless scrape that reads only the services block would report San Pedro as a normal open office. But its two-week calendar shows every day from Sunday, November 1 through Saturday, November 14 as “closed”, confirmed by two independent fetches on November 2, 2026, and the same all-closed calendar appears on the page’s wait-time widget. Three secondary sources currently contradict the own page and are all stale on this point: Torrance’s own nearby list shows San Pedro with standard hours, the AAA Torrance partner page’s nearby list shows San Pedro with standard hours, and a drivers-ed guide checked on October 17, 2026 lists San Pedro with standard hours. The closure therefore appeared sometime between October 17 and November 2. No reason for the closure is given anywhere on the page — do not invent one (renovation, staffing, and relocation are all guesses). San Pedro therefore gets a closed row in the table above, a do-not-travel warning here, and a re-check instruction: check San Pedro’s own dmv.ca.gov page before ever travelling there, because a fortnight of closed days is a closure signal, not a hours pattern. Its grocery-store kiosks are a different thing and stay open on their own hours — see the kiosk section below — and the finished distinction matters, because it is exactly the confusion that sends readers to a closed office. Note also that San Pedro is the nearest office to Torrance by a drivers-ed guide’s measure after Hawthorne, which makes the trap worse: the closest fallback a Torrance reader would naturally pick is the one that is closed.
Gardena is not a general field office. The “Gardena” listing on dmv.ca.gov resolves to the Gardena Commercial Drive Test Center, with different hours — Monday–Tuesday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Wednesday 8:00 am–4:00 pm, Thursday–Friday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday closed, Wednesday, November 11 closed — no kiosk callout, and only four services listed: Testing, Registration, Records, and Request miscellaneous original documents. No Licensing Services, no Title Transfers, no Plates, Permits, & Placards, no Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, no Self Service Terminals. Mention it only as a commercial-drive-test centre with its own earlier hours: never as a general Torrance alternative, and never as proof that Torrance does commercial testing, because Torrance’s own page lists “Testing” without any commercial qualifier, and this page does not upgrade that label.
Inglewood — do not travel. Inglewood’s own page still shows every day from Sunday, November 1 through Saturday, November 14 as “closed” — the same reading recorded on October 30, 2026, now a full fortnight later, so this is a sustained closure signal, not a one-week glitch. The page still carries the kiosk callout and the full nine-category services list, and Torrance’s nearby list repeats Inglewood as “Mon–Sun Closed”. Inglewood therefore gets a closed row in the table above, a do-not-travel warning here, and a re-check instruction, exactly like San Pedro. Two of the offices nearest Torrance — San Pedro and Inglewood — currently show as closed every day on their own dmv.ca.gov pages; do not travel to either without re-checking. Its grocery-store kiosk is a different thing and stays open on its own hours — Superior Grocers in Inglewood, 11202 S. Crenshaw Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90303, Mon–Sun 7:00 am–10:00 pm — and the finished distinction matters, because it is exactly the confusion that sends readers to a closed office: a kiosk is not the field office.
Three more corrections, honestly sourced. Carson has no field office: the Carson slug returns HTTP 404 on dmv.ca.gov. Redondo Beach has no field office: its slug returns HTTP 404 as well — its DMV presence is two grocery-store kiosks plus the Torrance office itself. Palos Verdes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills) has no field office: its slug returns HTTP 404. Torrance is the only field office serving Torrance, Carson, Redondo Beach, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula on dmv.ca.gov. That is the structural reason this office matters beyond Torrance itself, and it is also why a reader searching “Carson DMV” or “Redondo Beach DMV” and expecting an office that does not exist will be sent to Torrance — plus the grocery kiosks — by this page, not to a phantom address. Finally, the choice rule for the whole cluster: choose by task and by which office actually has a slot, never by an invented wait-time ranking. Torrance is the default (full services plus kiosk). Long Beach, Hawthorne, and Compton are the real fallbacks (full services plus kiosk). San Pedro and Inglewood are currently closed — do not travel. Gardena is a commercial drive-test centre only — not a general alternative. Carson, Redondo Beach, and Palos Verdes have no office at all — use Torrance plus the grocery kiosks.
5Frequently asked questions
What are the Torrance DMV’s hours?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. One dated exception: Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is closed entirely for Veterans Day, and the office reopens Thursday, November 12 at 8:00 AM. Holiday closures override the regular pattern, so check the office page before a holiday-week visit. No field office in this cluster lists Saturday hours, so be sceptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Torrance.
Is the Torrance DMV open on Monday?
Yes. Monday, November 2 and Monday, November 9 are both 8:00 AM–5:00 PM on the official Torrance calendar. One directory-style guide still claims Torrance is “closed on Mondays” and open only Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday — that claim is false against Torrance’s own page. Trust the DMV’s own calendar over any directory that says otherwise, and do not skip a perfectly open Monday because of a stale listing.
Is the Torrance DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?
No. Saturday and Sunday are both closed at the Torrance field office, in both weeks of the DMV’s two-week calendar (November 1 – November 14, 2026). Grocery-store kiosks nearby are open on weekends — for example, the Ralphs kiosk in Torrance itself is open Mon–Sun 6:00 am–1:00 am — but a kiosk is not the field office, and a Saturday kiosk errand is a different trip from a Saturday counter visit, which is not possible. The AAA Torrance partner branch is also open Saturdays 9:00 am–1:00 pm for members, for registration-type work only.
What is the Torrance DMV address?
1785 W 220th Street, Torrance, CA 90501, in Los Angeles County. The official office page is dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/torrance/. It is the only field office in Torrance on dmv.ca.gov, and the only field office for Carson, Redondo Beach, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula as well. If any address other than 1785 W 220th Street claims to be the Torrance DMV, check it against dmv.ca.gov before travelling — and do not confuse the office with the Ralphs kiosk on Pacific Coast Highway, which is a grocery store, not the office.
What is the phone number for the Torrance DMV?
There is no office-specific phone number for the Torrance DMV on dmv.ca.gov. The only DMV phone this page prints is the statewide line 1-800-777-0133, and it must never be presented as a Torrance direct number — the person who answers is not sitting in the Torrance office. Any local number a directory prints for “Torrance DMV” is unverified on dmv.ca.gov and should not be relied on.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Book first. Book on the DMV’s official scheduler on dmv.ca.gov and pick Torrance as the location, choosing the right appointment type: a field-office appointment for licences, ID, registration, and most counter services, or a drive-test appointment for the road test — the two are separate queues, and booking the wrong type means rebooking. The DMV’s published guidance states that field offices require an appointment for a drive test, made online or by calling 1-800-777-0133. This page does not promise a same-day slot or quote a booking lead time, because availability is live data — open the scheduler and see what is actually available, and if Torrance is full, check Long Beach, Hawthorne, or Compton in the same scheduler.
What services does the Torrance DMV offer — does it do driving tests?
All nine categories on its own page: Licensing Services; Testing; Title Transfers; Registration; Plates, Permits, & Placards; Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged; Records; Request miscellaneous original documents; and Self Service Terminals. “Testing” is the whole verified claim for tests — this page does not convert it into a drive-test route, a motorcycle-testing promise, or a commercial-testing promise, because none of those specifics appears on the Torrance page. The DMV’s official Driving Test Sites page lists Torrance among the offices where a noncommercial Class A or Class B driving test can be booked by calling 1-800-777-0133. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office — check the scheduler rather than trusting a directory that claims it.
Does the Torrance DMV have a self-service kiosk, and what can I do at the kiosk?
Yes. The Torrance page carries the “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line” callout and lists “Self Service Terminals” in its services. Kiosks are self-serve stations where you can complete certain registration services and request driver or vehicle records, in the DMV’s own words, and the range of services varies by kiosk location — so check the kiosk’s own service range before assuming your errand is a kiosk errand. The Ralphs kiosk in Torrance itself (5035 Pacific Coast Hwy., Mon–Sun 6:00 am–1:00 am) is the closest grocery-store kiosk to the office. Licensing, testing, title transfers, and plates business that needs a counter are not kiosk errands on this page’s evidence.
If the Torrance DMV is fully booked, which nearby office should I try instead?
Long Beach (3700 East Willow Street, Long Beach, CA 90815) first: full nine services, kiosk on site, same hours, and the DMV’s own lists name it as the strongest South Bay fallback. Hawthorne (3700 W El Segundo Boulevard, Hawthorne, CA 90250) and Compton (2111 South Santa Fe Avenue, Compton, CA 90221) are the other full-service, kiosk-equipped fallbacks. Do not go to San Pedro or Inglewood: both show as closed every day from November 1 through November 14, 2026 on their own dmv.ca.gov pages. Do not go to Gardena for general business either: the Gardena listing is a Commercial Drive Test Center with different hours and only four services, not a general field office.
Is there a DMV field office in Carson, Redondo Beach, or Palos Verdes?
No. The DMV’s own site has no field-office page for Carson, Redondo Beach, or Palos Verdes — each one returns a not-found page on dmv.ca.gov, so none of the three cities has a field office. Residents of those cities use the Torrance office (1785 W 220th Street, Torrance, CA 90501) plus the grocery-store kiosks: Redondo Beach has two kiosks of its own (Ralphs on Hawthorne Boulevard and Vons on Inglewood Avenue), and Carson residents can use the Torrance office or the Long Beach and Compton fallbacks. Do not trust a directory address that claims a field office in any of these three cities.
Can I renew my vehicle registration at a kiosk or a DMV business partner instead of going to the Torrance office?
Yes, for renewals and records. Kiosks handle certain registration services and driver or vehicle records — the Ralphs kiosk in Torrance (5035 Pacific Coast Hwy., Mon–Sun 6:00 am–1:00 am) and seven more grocery-store kiosks in the South Bay cluster are open daily, including weekends when the field office is closed. The AAA Torrance Branch (23001 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 90505, phone 1-310-325-3111) handles registration-type work for members only, is open Saturdays 9:00 am–1:00 pm, and stays open on Wednesday, November 11 when the field office is closed — but partners may apply additional fees, and partner help is not free the way a field-office visit is. No for REAL ID, a first licence, a drive test, or a title transfer that needs a counter: those belong at the 220th Street office.
How do I get to the Torrance DMV by bus, and is there parking information available?
Torrance Transit is the city’s own bus system, and its published Line 2 schedule lists a stop at Western Ave & 220th St — the cross-street of the DMV office, which sits just east of Western Avenue — and the same schedule shows the route reaching the Metro C Line at Vermont Ave station. This page names Line 2 and that published stop only: it gives no walk time, no frequency, and no timetable, because schedules change and a stop name alone does not prove the walking distance to the office door. Use a transit trip planner on the day of travel and check that day’s service, and confirm the return journey as well as the outward one, since the office closes at 5:00 pm. The official page publishes no parking description for Torrance, so this page publishes none either: if parking matters to your visit, check on arrival rather than trusting a directory’s parking paragraph.
The kiosk story: one on site, eight grocery kiosks nearby
Torrance’s kiosk position is strong: one machine inside the office, and eight grocery-store machines in the South Bay cluster, all open seven days a week on store hours. That cluster is the practical answer to “the office is closed on Saturday, so what do I do on Saturday?” — if, and only if, your errand is a kiosk errand. The table below is taken from Torrance’s own nearby list plus San Pedro’s list and Inglewood’s list, so every address and every hour in it is a DMV-listing fact, not a directory claim. The one thing the table cannot tell you is whether your specific errand is within a given kiosk’s range, because the DMV itself says the range varies by kiosk location. Treat the table as a map of where to try, not as a guarantee that a given machine will complete a given transaction, and keep the field-office/kiosk distinction sharp in your planning: the office closes at 5:00 pm and on weekends; the kiosks do not. Count the cluster carefully: one on-site kiosk, one grocery-store kiosk inside Torrance city limits, three more on Torrance’s own nearby list, three more on San Pedro’s list, and one from Inglewood’s list — never “nine kiosks in Torrance”.
| Kiosk | Address | Hours on DMV listing |
|---|---|---|
| Torrance field office kiosk (on site) | 1785 W 220th Street, Torrance, CA 90501 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed; closed Wed Nov 11 |
| Ralphs in Torrance | 5035 Pacific Coast Hwy., Torrance, CA 90505 | Mon–Sun 6:00 am–1:00 am |
| Ralphs in Redondo Beach | 1413 Hawthorne Blvd., Redondo Beach, CA 90278 | Mon–Sun 6:00 am–12:00 am |
| Vons in Redondo Beach | 4001 Inglewood Ave., Redondo Beach, CA 90278 | Mon–Sun 5:00 am–12:00 am |
| Superior Grocers in Gardena | 15000 Crenshaw Blvd., Gardena, CA 90249 | Mon–Sun 7:00 am–10:00 pm |
| Superior Grocers in Long Beach (Long Beach Blvd.) | 1033 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90813 | Mon–Sun 5:00 am–2:00 am |
| Superior Grocers in Long Beach (Cherry Ave.) | 5450 Cherry Ave., Long Beach, CA 90805 | Mon–Sun 7:00 am–10:00 pm |
| Albertsons in Lakewood | 5015 Del Amo Blvd., Lakewood, CA 90712 | Mon–Sun 6:00 am–11:00 pm |
| Superior Grocers in Inglewood | 11202 S. Crenshaw Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90303 | Mon–Sun 7:00 am–10:00 pm |
Two kiosks in this cluster deserve a special note. The Vons kiosk in Redondo Beach opens at 5:00 am, the earliest opening in the cluster, and the Superior Grocers kiosk on Long Beach Boulevard closes at 2:00 am, the latest closing — both are grocery-store hours, not office hours, and neither one means the field office opens early or stays late. The Ralphs kiosk in Torrance is the only grocery-store kiosk inside Torrance city limits and the closest kiosk to the office itself. The Superior Grocers kiosk in Inglewood is a useful edge case for the kiosk-versus-office distinction: the Inglewood field office is closed all fortnight, but this kiosk listing is separate, on Inglewood’s own nearby list, and it keeps its own store hours. Kiosk payments are Cash, Credit Card, and Debit Card only, per the DMV’s kiosk pages — a narrower list than the field office’s six methods, and one more reason to check the machine’s terms before you go. Our own DMV kiosk guide explains the kiosk route in general; this page’s table is the Torrance cluster specifically.
DMV partners near Torrance: registration help for an extra fee
Scope honesty first: Torrance’s own nearby list as fetched on November 2, 2026 contains field offices and kiosks in its top 10 — no business-partner entry appears in that list. But unlike some offices, Torrance does have a verified partner in the city, found through the search pass and verified on its own dmv.ca.gov partner page. The partner concept, in the DMV’s own words, is this: “Businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, often with much shorter wait times (if any!). Additional fees may be applied by this partner.” Partners handle certain registration services only, not licensing or testing, and the verified Torrance partner is below. The single most useful partner fact for a reader is in that disclaimer: partner help is not free the way a field-office visit is. No partner fee amount is printed anywhere on this page, because no fee amount was verified on dmv.ca.gov.
| Partner | Address & hours on DMV listing | Qualifier that matters |
|---|---|---|
| AAA Torrance Branch | 23001 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 90505 — Mon–Fri 9:00 am–5:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am–1:00 pm; Sun Closed — phone 1-310-325-3111 | Member use only. A non-member cannot walk into AAA for DMV business on this listing. Open Saturdays 9 am–1 pm, when the field office is closed — the only Saturday DMV-service window in the city on this page’s evidence — and open Wednesday, November 11, 9 am–5 pm, when the field office is closed for Veterans Day. Registration-type work only. |
| Lodel Insurance Services, Hawthorne Branch | 4801 W Imperial Hwy Suite 3, Hawthorne, CA 90250 — phone 1-323-800-2227 | Call before visiting. The cached copy of this partner page shows every day as closed — a data quirk, not real hours — so this page prints no hours for Lodel, only name, address, and phone. |
The AAA Torrance page lists the registration services it handles: registered and legal owner transfers; vehicles with a Manufacturer Statement of Origin or an out-of-state title; temporary operating permits; proof-of-insurance submissions; disabled person license plates, parking permits, and decals; special or personalized plates; registration renewal with sticker printing; and replacement stickers, tags, and titles. That list is the partner’s, not the field office’s, and it is exactly the boundary a reader needs: a partner is a registration shortcut with a fee and a membership catch, never a second DMV office. If your errand is licensing or testing, no partner on these lists helps you — that business belongs at a field office, and for a Torrance reader that means Torrance itself or a full-service neighbour from section 4. If your errand is a registration service and you value a shorter wait over a free visit, a partner is a legitimate option, provided you confirm the fee, the membership rule, and the hours on the partner’s own DMV listing before you go. The Lodel row is included precisely because a guide that silently drops awkward rows teaches readers to trust every row it prints; a guide that flags the closed row teaches readers to check every row, which is the safer habit.
Drive tests at Torrance: what to expect
Torrance lists “Testing” as a service, and that is the whole verified claim — this section explains what can honestly be built on it and what cannot. What can be built: a drive test is booked through the DMV appointment system as a drive-test appointment type, not as a general visit, and the DMV’s published “Ask DMV” guidance states that field offices require an appointment for a drive test, made online or by calling 1-800-777-0133. That guidance reaches this page through the DMV’s published Q&A, so it is attributed as DMV guidance and should be confirmed in the scheduler itself — but the planning rule it supports is solid: do not walk in expecting a road test without a drive-test booking. For a drive test, the same published guidance says to bring the permit, vehicle registration, and auto insurance. One more sourced fact: the DMV’s official Driving Test Sites page lists Torrance among the offices where a noncommercial Class A or Class B driving test can be booked by calling 1-800-777-0133. What cannot be built: no street-by-street route, no description of the test area, no motorcycle-testing claim, and no commercial-testing claim, because none of those specifics appears on the Torrance page. A drivers-ed guide advises that knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm — that is the guide’s claim, not the DMV’s, so do not book the last slot of the day for a permit test and expect otherwise. Five DMV-licensed driving schools hold a Torrance address (Avers, Bobs, Fuji, Norris, and South Bay, per the DMV list as reported by a drivers-ed guide, checked October 17, 2026) — confirm any school’s licence on the DMV lookup before paying, and treat the list as information, not a recommendation. One roadworks warning for test-takers practising in the area: Caltrans is resurfacing about 22 miles of Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance, Long Beach, Lomita, and nearby cities, scheduled from winter 2023/2024 through winter 2027/2028 with crews working at night, so evening practice drives on PCH may meet cones and closed lanes. That is a roadworks warning, not a test-route claim. Readers preparing for a test should also read our driving test appointment guide and our driving test tips, which cover the booking path and the test itself in general; this page’s job is the Torrance-specific facts, and it stops exactly where those facts stop.
Transit & getting there
This section makes no transit claim beyond the address and one published schedule fact, deliberately. No bus line number beyond Line 2, no station name as a “nearest station to the office”, no timetable, and no “X minutes’ walk” appears on this page, because none was verified on an official source for this office, and a stale walk time is worse than no walk time: it sends a reader to the wrong stop with false confidence. Use a transit trip planner on the day of travel and check that day’s service, because routes and schedules change, and do not rely on a printed walk time from a directory. The only location fact this section anchors on is the office address itself, 1785 W 220th Street, Torrance, CA 90501, which is what you enter into the planner. One piece of planning advice that needs no timetable: confirm the return journey as well as the outward one. The office closes at 5:00 pm, and a late-afternoon visit that runs long can strand a transit-dependent reader if the return service has thinned out by evening — that is planning advice, not a timetable claim, and it applies to every office on this site, not just Torrance. The official page also publishes no parking description for Torrance, so this page publishes none either: if parking matters to your visit, check on arrival rather than trusting a directory’s parking paragraph, which is exactly the kind of unverified detail this guide refuses to invent.
What to bring
The Torrance page does not publish a Torrance-specific document checklist, so this section gives only general, widely-published preparation guidance and labels it as general: bring the confirmation details for any online application or appointment, original documents (not photocopies) for the transaction, a payment method from the accepted-payments list in section 2, and anything the specific transaction’s DMV instructions require. Read the DMV’s instructions for your specific transaction before you leave, because the checklist that matters is the transaction’s, not the office’s — the office does not publish its own, and any guide that prints a “Torrance checklist” as if the office issued it is dressing up general advice as an official document. For a first REAL ID, independent guides consistently describe the document pattern as proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency — but that pattern was not verified on the Torrance page, so treat it as general guidance to verify against the DMV’s REAL ID guidance before you travel, not as this office’s published requirement. Our REAL ID appointment guide covers that process in detail. For a drive test, the DMV’s published guidance says to bring the permit, vehicle registration, and auto insurance. Our document checklist covers the general preparation in more detail, and our holiday schedule guide is worth checking before a holiday-week visit, since holiday closures override the regular pattern in section 2 — Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is the live example. One last general point: if a document is unusual — a trust document, a court order, a foreign document — describe it exactly when you call the statewide line, because the counter’s answer will depend on the exact document, and a vague description earns a vague answer.
Timing that is actually verified
Everything in this section is a timing claim that survives checking against dmv.ca.gov on November 2, 2026 — and, just as usefully, the timing claims that do not survive. Verified: Wednesday opens at 9:00 am, not 8:00 am, in both calendar weeks. Verified: Saturday and Sunday are closed, in both calendar weeks. Verified: Monday, November 2, 2026 — build day itself — is an 8:00 am–5:00 pm day with no special closure visible in the calendar window except the November 11 holiday closure. Verified: Torrance is open on Mondays (November 2 and November 9, both 8:00 am–5:00 pm), against a directory claim that it is closed on Mondays. Verified: San Pedro is closed all fourteen days from November 1 through November 14, on its own page, and Inglewood is closed all fourteen days in the same window, on its own page. Verified: the Gardena listing is a Commercial Drive Test Center with 7:00 am–4:00 pm hours, not a general field office. Not verified, and therefore not printed as fact anywhere on this page: any wait-time minutes (the office page’s widgets render as “Closed” when fetched while the office is closed, which is a snapshot, not a statistic); any “quietest hour” or “busiest day” pattern (no such pattern is published on the office page, and review-derived patterns are forbidden on this page by the task rules); any booking lead time; any Saturday opening for any field office in this cluster; any holiday list presented as Torrance’s own schedule; and any reason for the San Pedro or Inglewood closures, because the DMV’s own pages give none. The discipline behind that list is the whole editorial method of this site in one paragraph: the live dmv.ca.gov page governs, a cached copy does not, a directory does not, and a guide that says “not published” where the official page is silent is more useful than a guide that fills the silence with a guess. Torrance is also a useful case study in why you should distrust thin directory content in general: the Torrance Monday error, the San Pedro-as-open error, the Inglewood-as-open error, the Saturday-opening error, and the Carson/Redondo Beach/Palos Verdes phantom-office error are five different ways the same failure happens — a secondary site prints something the DMV’s own page does not say, and a reader plans a trip around it. Every office fact on this page was re-read on dmv.ca.gov on November 2, 2026, so that if any of those errors touches Torrance itself, this page is the correction, not the source.
Ready to book?
Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the 220th Street office for Torrance visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go — especially around Wednesday, November 11.
