Santa Teresa (San Jose) DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide (2026)
The California DMV field office on Martinvale Lane — San Jose’s second full-service office, with nine counter services, a self-serve kiosk on site, and three Safeway kiosks nearby. It is also the office whose neighbours prove why every office must be checked on its own page: one nearby office is open two days a week, and two list shorter menus. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

1Santa Teresa’s south San Jose anchor office
Santa Teresa is a neighbourhood in southern San Jose, California, and its DMV field office sits at 180 Martinvale Lane, San Jose, CA 95119 — in the 95119 ZIP, south of State Route 85, in the same part of town as the VTA Santa Teresa light-rail terminus. The office’s own page on dmv.ca.gov labels it a field office, not a kiosk, not a partner, and not a driver-safety office, and its photo on dmv.ca.gov is captioned “Santa Teresa Field Office Image”. That label matters, because it tells you what kind of visit this is: a full counter-service office where licensing, testing, title transfers, registration, plates and placards, replacements, and records are all listed as services provided, plus a self-serve kiosk on site. Readers often assume a smaller-neighbourhood office is a limited-service site. On the official listing, Santa Teresa is not — and the comparison table in section 4 proves the point, because two offices in the same county really do list shorter menus on their own pages. If your errand is on Santa Teresa’s nine-category list, this office can handle it at the counter, subject to the appointment rules in section 3.
Santa Teresa is the south San Jose anchor of its cluster, and the first thing this page must settle is that San Jose has TWO field offices, not one. The Alma Avenue office (111 W Alma Avenue, San Jose, CA 95110, downtown-adjacent) and the Santa Teresa office (180 Martinvale Lane, San Jose, CA 95119, south San Jose) are both full-service, both kiosk-equipped, and both on the standard hours pattern — so nothing about hours or services distinguishes them, and the choice between them turns on which one has an appointment slot and which side of town you are on. A reader who searches “San Jose DMV” and drives to the first result can easily end up at the wrong office, and a guide that treats “San Jose DMV” as a single place is wrong for half the city’s readers. That is why this page names Alma Avenue explicitly, with its full address, in this section and again in the comparison table, and why it links to our own San Jose (Alma Avenue) DMV guide. It is also why this page kills the “San Jose South” label outright: there is no dmv.ca.gov field-office page for “San Jose South” — the address returns a 404, verified on build day — so any directory or map pin using that name is inventing a label. The office’s real name on dmv.ca.gov is Santa Teresa, and Santa Teresa is the south San Jose office.
There is a second address trap in this city, and it is the more dangerous one. San Jose’s old Senter Road office is permanently closed. The DMV reassigned its staff to San Jose (Alma Avenue), Santa Teresa, Santa Clara, and Los Gatos — our own San Jose guide documents the closure and the reassignment — and multiple guides warn that Google Maps and other listings still show the Senter Road location. A reader who navigates to Senter Road goes to a closed office. Do not navigate there; go to Martinvale Lane for Santa Teresa, or to Alma Avenue for the downtown-side office. (Our San Jose guide also prints mile figures for the reassignment — Alma 2 miles, Santa Teresa 9, Santa Clara 11, Los Gatos 14 — cited from that guide, not re-verified on dmv.ca.gov for this build; the closure warning is the load-bearing fact, and the miles are that guide’s, not this page’s own verification.) A third, smaller trap: two widely-copied “driving test route” PDFs place this office “on Santa Teresa Boulevard”. That is wrong. The office is on Martinvale Lane, and every address on this page says so.
This page is an independent guide, not the DMV, and it cannot book for you, cannot see live slot availability, and never charges for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on October 31, 2026. Where a fact could not be verified on an official source, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no street-by-street drive-test route, no motorcycle-testing claim, no commercial-testing claim, no parking description, no wait-time minutes, and no review numbers appear anywhere below. Those omissions are deliberate. The DMV’s office page publishes none of them for Santa Teresa, and a guide that invents them would be less useful, not more, because a reader who plans around an invented parking description or an invented wait time arrives with false confidence. What this page does give you is everything the official listing does publish, checked office by office, plus the traps the listings reveal: a closed Senter Road office that still looks open on maps, a Hollister office that is open two days a week, two neighbouring offices with shorter services menus, a Wednesday late start, and grocery-store kiosk hours that must never be mistaken for office hours.
The single most useful thing to know before anything else is the shape of the week. Santa Teresa is open Monday through Friday and closed on Saturday and Sunday, and Wednesday opens an hour late, at 9:00 am instead of 8:00 am. If you remember nothing else from this page, remember the Wednesday rule and the weekend rule, because those two facts answer the largest share of “is it open?” questions about this office, and getting either one wrong costs a wasted trip. The full table, with the two-week calendar that confirms it, is in section 2. The rest of the page is organised the way a reader actually uses an office guide: hours and services first, then how to book, then the honest comparison with nearby offices, then the twelve questions readers ask most, then the kiosk cluster, the partner distinction, drive tests, transit, what to bring, and the timing traps — in that order, so you can stop reading as soon as your question is answered.
2Hours, services & what this office offers
The weekly pattern is the standard California field-office pattern, confirmed on the office’s own dmv.ca.gov page, which prints a two-week calendar (October 25 – November 7, 2026) showing the same pattern in both weeks — the strongest form of this verification, because it is not a single-day snapshot. The calendar and the standing weekly pattern agree exactly, and the nearby lists of the neighbouring offices repeat the same pattern for Santa Teresa, so there is no ambiguity to resolve and no conflicting source to reconcile:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Tuesday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Wednesday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late) |
| Thursday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Saturday – Sunday | Closed |
The Wednesday quirk is the detail that catches the most people: every other weekday opens at 8:00 AM, but Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM. Do not show up at 8:00 on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage — you will wait outside for an hour. Weekends are closed, full stop, and this page states that explicitly rather than leaving the weekend blank, because a blank weekend reads as “unknown” and an explicit “closed” answers the single most-asked weekend question about this office. No field office in this cluster lists Saturday hours, so be sceptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Santa Teresa — and do not let a partner’s Saturday hours or a kiosk’s weekend hours be misread as a field-office Saturday opening. The three Safeway kiosks in the kiosk section are open on weekends; the Santa Teresa field office is not, and that distinction is the difference between a successful Saturday errand at a kiosk and a wasted Saturday trip to a closed office. One more calendar caution: the DMV page shows a rolling two-week calendar, not just a standing pattern. Hours above are the regular weekly pattern as listed on dmv.ca.gov; check the office page before a holiday-week visit, because holiday closures override the regular pattern, and this page does not print a holiday list as Santa Teresa’s own schedule because the office page does not publish one. Build day itself — Saturday, October 31, 2026 — is a closed day, which is why the office page’s wait-time widgets rendered “Closed” when the page was fetched for this build. A final hours note that trips up test-takers: written/knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 p.m., so a late-afternoon visit is not a knowledge-test visit — arrive well before that cutoff if a test is your errand.
The services list below is reproduced verbatim from the Santa Teresa page’s Services Provided block, with one plain sentence of explanation per category. The explanations stay inside the label — they do not invent sub-services the page does not list:
| Service (as listed on dmv.ca.gov) | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|
| Licensing Services | Driver licence and ID card business at the counter, including applications and related licensing transactions. The page lists the category; it does not enumerate every licence class, so do not assume a specialist licence transaction is covered without checking the DMV’s guidance for that transaction. |
| Testing | Testing is listed as a service. That is the whole verified claim. It must not be read as a drive-test route, a motorcycle-testing promise, or a commercial-testing promise — none of those specifics appears on the Santa Teresa page. Behind-the-wheel tests are booked through the DMV appointment system; see section 3 and the drive-test section below. |
| Title Transfers | Transferring a vehicle title into a new owner’s name at the counter. |
| Registration | Vehicle registration business at the office — distinct from the kiosk and online registration routes, which suit simpler renewals. |
| Plates, Permits, & Placards | Plates, permits, and placards as a grouped category. If your errand spans two of these (for example, plates and a placard), bring the documents for both, because the counter treats them as separate items even though the DMV groups them in one line. |
| Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged | Replacements for lost, stolen, or damaged items within the categories above. |
| Records | Driver and vehicle record requests handled at the office, alongside the online and kiosk routes for records. |
| Request miscellaneous original documents | The DMV’s own catch-all label, reproduced verbatim. Do not paraphrase it into specific document names the page does not list; if your document is unusual, call the statewide line first and describe it exactly. |
| Self Service Terminals | The on-site self-serve kiosk. See the kiosk section below for what kiosks can and cannot do, and for the three Safeway kiosks on Santa Teresa’s own nearby list. |
Payments at the field office are exactly six methods, verbatim from the Santa Teresa page: Cash, Check, Credit Card, Debit Card, Digital Wallet, and Money order. The page states: “DMV field offices accept Cash, Check, Credit Card, Debit Card, Digital Wallet, and Money order.” Bring a payment method from that list, and do not assume a seventh method is accepted because a partner or a kiosk accepts it — partners may apply additional fees (the DMV’s own disclaimer), and kiosks accept Cash, Credit Card, and Debit Card only, which is the kiosk payments list, not the field-office list. Mixing those three lists into one table is one of the easiest ways a guide misleads a reader, so this page keeps them separate: field office (six methods, above), kiosk (three methods, kiosk section), partner (additional fees may apply, partner section).
Before you commit to a counter visit at all, use the DMV’s own framing, which appears on its office pages: most services are available online with the DMV or with a DMV-authorized partner. That is the strongest, officially-sourced answer to “do I even need to go in?” If your errand is a straightforward renewal, a record request, or a replacement that the online system or a kiosk handles, the online or kiosk route saves the trip entirely — and the kiosk section below lists the machines that can do it. The counter visit earns its place when your transaction needs an in-person step: a test, a title transfer with complications, a licensing transaction the online system will not accept, or any errand where you need a person to look at an unusual document. The appointment section that follows is written for that counter visit, not for the online route, and it is careful about what it does and does not promise.
3Booking an appointment here
Book on the DMV’s official scheduler on dmv.ca.gov, and pick Santa Teresa as the location. That sentence is the whole booking instruction, and everything else in this section is about not getting the details wrong around it. First, choose the right appointment type in the scheduler. The DMV’s appointment system distinguishes a field-office appointment from a drive-test appointment, and the distinction matters: the DMV’s own published “Ask DMV” guidance states that field offices require an appointment for a drive test, made online or by calling 1-800-777-0133. That statement reaches this page through the DMV’s published Q&A rather than through live scheduler text, so treat it as DMV guidance and confirm it in the scheduler itself — but do not walk in expecting a road test without a drive-test booking, because that is the one visit type where a general appointment is the wrong ticket. For a general counter visit, book the general appointment type, and bring the confirmation details for any online application or appointment with you.
Second, never plan around a promised slot. This page does not promise a same-day slot, does not quote a booking lead time such as “slots open X weeks out”, and does not describe a reschedule button, because none of that is live data a static guide can verify — availability changes by the hour, and a guide that prints a lead time is printing yesterday’s scheduler state as if it were a rule. Be especially wary of the two invented figures circulating about this region: one competitor guide claims you could “be waiting for 4+ hours” if you just show up, and that Bay Area appointments “often book out 2-3 months in advance”. Neither figure has a source or a date, and this page does not repeat either one — the honest formulation is: open the official scheduler, pick Santa Teresa, and see live availability. If Santa Teresa is full on the day you need, check San Jose (Alma Avenue), Los Gatos, or Santa Clara in the same scheduler before you give up on the week, because the comparison table in section 4 exists precisely for that moment — and because hours will not help you choose between them (they are identical for the three full-service offices), the choice turns on kiosk availability, services listed, and which office actually has a slot. One more stale instruction to ignore: a competitor guide still tells readers that the DMV’s “Get in Line” same-day queue “usually activates around 9:00 AM”. Get in Line was discontinued in March 2026 and replaced by QR Virtual Intake in April 2026, so do not look for a Get in Line button — use the current same-day process as shown on dmv.ca.gov on the day you go. Third, if the scheduler defeats you, the statewide phone line 1-800-777-0133 is the DMV’s published contact route for appointment help. It is the statewide line, not a Santa Teresa direct number — the Santa Teresa page lists no office-specific phone, email, or fax — so do not expect the person who answers to be sitting in the Santa Teresa office, and do not quote the number to anyone as “the Santa Teresa DMV number”.
Fourth, check the calendar twice: once in the scheduler, and once on the office page. The scheduler shows availability; the office page shows the two-week calendar and any special closure in the window. A holiday-week visit is the case where those two checks disagree most often, because the regular Monday-to-Friday pattern is suspended by holidays that the scheduler may or may not surface clearly. This page’s rule is simple: if either source shows a closure, believe the closure. Fifth, a note on the wait-time widgets you will see on the office page. They render as “Closed” when the office is closed — for example, when the page is fetched on a Saturday, which is build day itself — and that is a snapshot of the widget, not a statistic about how long you will wait. Never convert a widget snapshot into “the wait is X minutes”, and never let a third-party wait-time site override the official page: no wait-time minutes appear on this page, because none is published for Santa Teresa in a form a guide can honestly quote. Sixth, a practical tip from real visitor reviews of this office, distilled without quoting any review count: complete your form BEFORE taking a queue number. Visitors report arriving, taking a number, and then discovering at the counter that a form must be filled out first — which means taking a new number and waiting in line again. Do the paperwork first, then take the number. That ordering advice (form first, appointment if you can get one) is free, and it is the difference between one wait and two.
4Nearby DMV offices: the South Bay decision table
All full-service offices below share the same weekly hours pattern as Santa Teresa (Monday–Tuesday and Thursday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday closed) as of October 31, 2026, except where the table says otherwise. The hours sameness is itself a finding: a reader cannot pick between the full-service offices on hours, so this comparison turns on kiosk availability, services listed, days open, and appointment availability instead. Each row below was read on that office’s own dmv.ca.gov page, except Redwood City and the Salinas Commercial Drive Test Center, which are footnoted honestly below the table. Do not copy hours from Santa Teresa into these rows in your head — each row was verified separately, and the two short menus plus the two-days-a-week office in this table are the proof that separate verification matters.
| Office | Address (dmv.ca.gov) | Hours | Kiosk on site | Services listed on its own page |

| Redwood City (corroborated) | 300 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City, CA 94063 | Same pattern | Yes (per nearby lists) | Full 9 (per nearby lists) |
San Jose (Alma Avenue) is the other San Jose office, and the primary “if Santa Teresa is full” alternative. Its own page shows the Alma Avenue address, the standard pattern, the kiosk callout, “Self Service Terminals” in services, and the identical six-method payments list, and its services list is identical in categories to Santa Teresa’s. Its nearby list, in turn, names Santa Clara first, then Los Gatos — and our own San Jose (Alma Avenue) DMV guide already documents the two-offices story from the Alma side, including the Senter Road closure warning and the drive-test reputation ranking. If your errand is anything on the nine-category list, Alma Avenue is a like-for-like substitute for Santa Teresa, and the only decision left is which office has an appointment slot. The San Jose guide also documents a separate Driver License Processing Center in San Jose that handles driver licences and ID cards only — no vehicle registration — a third San Jose facility that must not be confused with either field office; that detail is cited from our San Jose guide, not re-verified on dmv.ca.gov for this build.
Los Gatos is a real field office with the standard hours pattern, but with a shorter services list on its own page and no kiosk — the exception that proves office-by-office verification. Its own page shows the Santa Cruz Avenue address, the standard pattern, and the identical six-method payments list, but its Services Provided block lists only eight categories (no Self Service Terminals) and the page carries no “This office has a self-serve kiosk” callout. Los Gatos is therefore a genuine alternative for licensing, testing, title, registration, plates, and replacement business, but a reader whose errand is a kiosk errand should not be sent to Los Gatos — the kiosk errand belongs at Santa Teresa’s on-site machine or at one of the Safeway kiosks in the kiosk section. Phrase this carefully in your own planning: the claim is “listed on its own page”, not a proven absence, because a page extraction could in principle drop a block — but the planning consequence is the same either way, which is to check before you travel rather than assume. Los Gatos’s own nearby list is also the source of two extra kiosks for the cluster (Safeway Cupertino, 24 hours; Safeway Sunnyvale, 24 hours) and of the AAA Los Gatos Branch partner, whose Monday-hours row is a listing anomaly (see the partner section).
Santa Clara is the north-side full-service alternative. Its own page shows the Flora Vista address, the standard pattern, the kiosk callout, the full nine services, and the identical six-method payments list. Its nearby list names San Jose (Alma) first, then Mountain View IBC, then Los Gatos — and it is the source of the Redwood City fallback row and of the Safeway Milpitas kiosk entry. Santa Clara is a like-for-like substitute for Santa Teresa on services, kiosk, and hours, and the choice between them is slot availability and side of town. Its nearby list also carries the Mountain View double-listing quirk: the same facility appears twice, as “Mountain View IBC” and as “Mountain View Industry Business Center”, at the same address with the same hours — one facility, two list entries, worth one sentence here rather than two rows.
Gilroy is the south-county full-service alternative, and the office for readers south of Santa Teresa. Its own page shows the Automall Parkway address, the standard pattern, the kiosk callout, the full nine services, and the identical six-method payments list. Gilroy’s nearby list is partner-heavy (AAA Gilroy Branch, Dicar Insurance Marketing, South Valley Business Services, Milla Registration Services, Fiesta Auto Insurance Barbara, Fasterlube in Morgan Hill) — and it is the source of the Morgan Hill partner row in the partner section, which matters because Morgan Hill itself has NO field office (404 verified on build day) while still having partner coverage. A Santa Teresa reader heading south should know Gilroy is the last full-service office before the county line, and that Hollister (Tue/Thu only) is not a like-for-like fallback.
Watsonville is the coastal fallback, standard hours, eight services, no kiosk callout. Its own page shows the Alta Vista address and the standard pattern, but no kiosk badge and no Self Service Terminals in services. Watsonville is a genuine alternative for counter business, but not for kiosk errands, and it is a long drive from Santa Teresa — include it as the coastal row, not as a next-door substitute. Its nearby list names Gilroy first, which is the honest routing: a Santa Teresa reader who cannot get a slot should try Gilroy before Watsonville.
Salinas is the Monterey County county-seat office, full nine services, kiosk on site, standard hours. Its own page shows the Laurel Drive address, the standard pattern, the kiosk callout, and the full nine. Salinas is a far-south fallback, not a next-door substitute, and its value in this table is as the “full nine plus kiosk, south” row — and as the source of the Salinas Commercial Drive Test Center row below, which must never be confused with a general office. Our own Salinas DMV guide is already live, so this page links to it directly.
Hollister — do not travel except on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hollister’s own page is the single most important negative finding on this page after the Senter Road warning. The page still carries the full eight-category services list, so a careless scrape that reads only the services block would report Hollister as a normal open office. But its two-week calendar shows Monday closed, Tuesday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday closed, Thursday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Friday closed, Saturday–Sunday closed — in both weeks, October 25 – November 7, 2026. Hollister is open two days a week. A Santa Teresa reader sent to Hollister on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday arrives at a closed office. Hollister therefore gets a highlighted row in the table above, a do-not-travel-on-closed-days warning here, and a re-check instruction: check Hollister’s own dmv.ca.gov page before ever travelling there. Its services list is also short (eight categories, no kiosk), so it is not a kiosk fallback either. Our Salinas guide already documents the same Tue/Thu-only pattern for King City — the same caution applies there, cited from that guide.
Mountain View IBC — not a general field office. Mountain View’s page exists at /field-office/mountain-view/, but it is an Industry Business Center, not a general public field office. Its hours are different (Monday–Tuesday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Wednesday 8:00 am–4:00 pm, Thursday–Friday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday closed), its Services Provided block is EMPTY — no service categories are listed at all — and the page carries a “Make an Appointment” button rather than the standard field-office layout. Mention it only as an Industry Business Center with its own earlier hours: never as a general Santa Teresa alternative, and never as proof that Santa Teresa does commercial or business testing, because Santa Teresa’s own page lists “Testing” without any commercial qualifier, and this page does not upgrade that label.
Two further rows, honestly sourced. Redwood City (300 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City, CA 94063, standard pattern, kiosk available) appears identically on the nearby lists of Santa Clara and Mountain View, and is included here as a far-north fallback on that corroboration — but its own page was not directly read for this guide, so treat its row as corroborated rather than own-page verified, and check Redwood City’s own page before travelling. Finally, the Salinas Commercial Drive Test Center (838 Vertin Ave, Salinas, CA 93901) is listed on Salinas’s nearby list with different hours — Monday–Tuesday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–4:00 pm, Thursday–Friday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday closed, and no kiosk badge. Mention it only as a commercial-drive-test centre with its own earlier hours: never as a general Santa Teresa alternative, and never as proof that Santa Teresa does commercial testing.
The no-office corrections deserve their own paragraph, because readers search these city names constantly. Morgan Hill, Campbell, Cupertino, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, Los Altos, and Palo Alto all return 404 on dmv.ca.gov — none has a field-office page, so none has a field office on the DMV’s own listing, all verified on build day. A Campbell or Cupertino reader has no in-city office and must use Los Gatos, Santa Clara, or Santa Teresa; a Morgan Hill reader uses Gilroy (or Santa Teresa) for office visits and the Morgan Hill partners in the partner section for registration help; a Sunnyvale or Milpitas reader uses the 24-hour Safeway kiosks for kiosk errands and Santa Clara or Santa Teresa for counter visits. And “San Jose South” is not a DMV office name at all — Santa Teresa IS the south San Jose office, at 180 Martinvale Lane. A guide that names the non-existent offices saves the wasted trip that a directory’s phantom listing causes.
5Frequently asked questions
What is the Santa Teresa DMV address?
180 Martinvale Lane, San Jose, CA 95119, in Santa Clara County — the south San Jose field office. The official office page is dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/santa-teresa/. Do not trust a directory entry at a different address — for example, two widely-copied “driving test route” PDFs place this office “on Santa Teresa Boulevard”, which is wrong; the office is on Martinvale Lane. There is also no “San Jose South” DMV office by that name (the address returns a 404 on dmv.ca.gov) — Santa Teresa is the south San Jose office. And do not navigate to the old Senter Road office: it is permanently closed, and Google Maps still shows it.
What are the Santa Teresa DMV hours?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. The Wednesday 9:00 AM opening is the mistake to avoid — do not arrive at 8:00 AM on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage. Holiday closures override the regular pattern, so check the office page before a holiday-week visit. Written/knowledge tests are not offered after 4:30 p.m., so arrive well before that cutoff if a test is your errand. No field office in this cluster lists Saturday hours, so be sceptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Santa Teresa.
Is the Santa Teresa DMV open on Saturday?
No. Saturday and Sunday are both closed at the Santa Teresa field office, in both weeks of the DMV’s two-week calendar (October 25 – November 7, 2026). Grocery-store kiosks nearby are open on weekends — for example, the Safeway kiosk on Branham Lane is open Mon–Sun 5:00 am–2:00 am — but a kiosk is not the field office, and a Saturday kiosk errand is a different trip from a Saturday counter visit, which is not possible.
Do I need an appointment at the Santa Teresa DMV?
Book on the DMV’s official scheduler on dmv.ca.gov and pick Santa Teresa as the location. The DMV’s published “Ask DMV” guidance states that field offices require an appointment for a drive test, made online or by calling 1-800-777-0133, so a drive test needs a drive-test appointment type, not a general visit. For a general counter visit, book the general appointment type and bring your confirmation details. This page does not promise a same-day slot or quote a booking lead time, because availability is live data — open the scheduler and see what is actually available, and if Santa Teresa is full, check San Jose (Alma Avenue), Los Gatos, or Santa Clara in the same scheduler. Do not look for a “Get in Line” button: that same-day queue was discontinued in March 2026 and replaced by QR Virtual Intake in April 2026.
How do I book an appointment at the Santa Teresa DMV?
On the DMV’s official scheduler on dmv.ca.gov: choose the appointment type (Office Visit for a counter visit, Behind-the-Wheel Drive Test for a road test), pick Santa Teresa as the location, and follow the scheduler’s steps — or call the statewide line 1-800-777-0133 for appointment help. Booking is free on dmv.ca.gov; any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. There is no Santa Teresa direct phone number — the office page lists no office-specific phone, email, or fax — so do not quote 1-800-777-0133 to anyone as “the Santa Teresa DMV number”.
Is there a DMV kiosk at the Santa Teresa office, and what can I do there?
Yes. The Santa Teresa page carries the “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line” callout and lists “Self Service Terminals” in its services. Kiosks are self-serve stations where you can complete certain registration services and request driver or vehicle records, in the DMV’s own words, and the range of services varies by kiosk location — so check the kiosk’s own service range before assuming your errand is a kiosk errand. Three more kiosks appear on Santa Teresa’s own nearby list, all in Safeway stores in San Jose, with their own store hours. The on-site kiosk follows the office’s hours (Mon–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, closed weekends) — it is not open on weekends the way the grocery-store kiosks are. Kiosks accept Cash, Credit Card, and Debit Card only.
Does the Santa Teresa DMV offer behind-the-wheel driving tests?
Yes, as far as the official listings go: “Testing” is on the office’s own services list, and the DMV handbook’s Driving Test Sites section lists Santa Teresa among the offices where you call 1-800-777-0133 to make an appointment for a noncommercial Class A or Class B driving test. For a regular Class C drive test, book the drive-test appointment type in the official scheduler (or by phone) — do not walk in expecting a road test on a general visit. For a drive test, the DMV’s published guidance says to bring the permit, vehicle registration, and auto insurance. What this page does not do: no street-by-street test route, no test duration, and no pass-rate claim — the DMV publishes none of those for Santa Teresa, and two widely-copied “route” PDFs that try to describe one get the office’s own street wrong.
Is Santa Teresa the easiest DMV for the driving test?
There is no official answer to that question, and this page will not invent one. The scoring criteria and point thresholds are the same statewide at every office, and the DMV publishes no current per-office pass rates — the only detailed public data is a 1994–95 pilot study. What exists instead is local reputation, and it contradicts itself: a Saratoga High student-paper ranking, drawing on r/SanJose, calls Santa Teresa “almost a guaranteed pass” and “a clear winner as the best DMV in the area”, while a road-test concierge’s blog ranks Santa Teresa last of twelve offices with an 18% pass rate on its own small, undated client sample. Both cannot be right, and neither is official. The honest version: local teens and driving instructors describe Santa Teresa’s surrounding streets as wider and less chaotic than downtown Alma, which may make the drive feel calmer — but the test is scored the same way everywhere, so choose the office on slot availability and side of town, not on an “easiest” claim.
What services are available at the Santa Teresa DMV?
All nine categories on its own page: Licensing Services; Testing; Title Transfers; Registration; Plates, Permits, & Placards; Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged; Records; Request miscellaneous original documents; and Self Service Terminals. “Testing” is the whole verified claim for tests — this page does not convert it into a drive-test route, a motorcycle-testing promise, or a commercial-testing promise, because none of those specifics appears on the Santa Teresa page. For commercial drive-test business, the Salinas Commercial Drive Test Center is a separate listing with its own hours, not a Santa Teresa service.
What payment methods does the Santa Teresa DMV accept?
Cash, Check, Credit Card, Debit Card, Digital Wallet, and Money order — all six, verbatim from the Santa Teresa page. That is the field-office list. Kiosks accept Cash, Credit Card, and Debit Card only, and DMV partners may apply additional fees, so do not mix the three lists: bring a field-office payment method for a counter visit, and check the kiosk or partner terms separately for those routes.
Which nearby office should I try if Santa Teresa is full?
San Jose (Alma Avenue) (111 W Alma Avenue, San Jose, CA 95110) first: full nine services, kiosk on site, same hours, and the other San Jose field office. Santa Clara (3665 Flora Vista Ave, Santa Clara, CA 95051) and Gilroy (6984 Automall Parkway Suite A, Gilroy, CA 95020) are the other full-service, kiosk-equipped fallbacks. Los Gatos (600 N Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos, CA 95030) has the standard hours but lists only eight services and no kiosk — so check its own page against your errand before travelling, and do not send a kiosk errand there. Do not go to Hollister except on a Tuesday or Thursday: its own page shows it closed Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And do not go to Morgan Hill for an office visit at all — it has no field office; Gilroy is its office.
Is the Senter Road DMV in San Jose still open?
No — the Senter Road office is permanently closed. The DMV reassigned its staff to San Jose (Alma Avenue), Santa Teresa, Santa Clara, and Los Gatos, per our own San Jose DMV guide, which documents the closure — but Google Maps and other listings still show the Senter Road location, so readers keep navigating there. Do not go to Senter Road; go to Martinvale Lane for Santa Teresa, or to Alma Avenue for the downtown-side office.
The kiosk story: one on site, three Safeway kiosks nearby
Santa Teresa’s kiosk position is strong: one machine inside the office, and three grocery-store machines on the office’s own nearby list, all open seven days a week on store hours. That cluster is the practical answer to “the office is closed on Saturday, so what do I do on Saturday?” — if, and only if, your errand is a kiosk errand. The table below is taken entirely from Santa Teresa’s own nearby list, so every address and every hour in it is a DMV-listing fact, not a directory claim. The one thing the table cannot tell you is whether your specific errand is within a given kiosk’s range, because the DMV itself says the range varies by kiosk location. Treat the table as a map of where to try, not as a guarantee that a given machine will complete a given transaction, and keep the field-office/kiosk distinction sharp in your planning: the office closes at 5:00 pm and on weekends; the kiosks do not. One distinction the DMV’s own kiosk wording can blur: the kiosk pages say kiosks are “open daily” with “no wait times” — that describes kiosks in general, and the grocery-store machines really are open daily. The ON-SITE kiosk inside the Santa Teresa office follows the office’s hours, not the store hours: Monday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday from 9:00 am, closed Saturday and Sunday. Do not plan a Saturday visit to the on-site machine.
| Kiosk | Address | Hours on DMV listing |
|---|---|---|
| Santa Teresa field office kiosk (on site) | 180 Martinvale Lane, San Jose, CA 95119 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed |
| Safeway in S.J. Branham | 179 Branham Lane, San Jose, CA 95136 | Mon–Sun 5:00 am–2:00 am |
| Safeway in S.J. E. Capitol Expwy. | 2980 E. Capitol Expressway, San Jose, CA 95148 | Mon–Sun 5:00 am–1:00 am |
| Safeway in S.J. San Carlos | 1300 W. San Carlos St., San Jose, CA 95126 | Mon–Sun 5:00 am–2:00 am |
Further kiosks on neighbouring offices’ lists extend the cluster, and the finished page labels each with its source office so a reader can check it: Safeway in Cupertino (20620 Homestead Rd., Cupertino, CA 95014, Open 24 Hours — from Los Gatos’s page and Santa Clara’s page); Safeway in Sunnyvale (150 E. El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA 94087, Open 24 Hours — from Los Gatos’s page and Santa Clara’s page); and Safeway in Milpitas (555 E. Calaveras Blvd., Milpitas, CA 95035, Mon–Sun 6:00 am–1:00 am — from Santa Clara’s page). Note the pattern the cluster proves: the two 24-hour kiosks sit in cities (Cupertino, Sunnyvale) that have NO field office at all — the kiosk is the in-city DMV presence there, which is exactly why the no-office corrections in section 4 matter. Kiosk payments are Cash, Credit Card, and Debit Card only, per the DMV’s kiosk pages — a narrower list than the field office’s six methods, and one more reason to check the machine’s terms before you go. Our own DMV kiosk guide explains the kiosk route in general; this page’s table is the Santa Teresa cluster specifically.
DMV partners near Santa Teresa: registration help for an extra fee
Scope honesty first: unlike some offices whose nearby lists contain no partners at all, Santa Teresa’s own nearby list DOES contain business-partner entries — six of them — so this page can give the partner picture from the office’s own listing. What it does not do is invent partner details the listing does not give, or print a partner fee amount, because no fee amount was verified on dmv.ca.gov. The DMV’s own partner disclaimer, verbatim: “Businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, often with much shorter wait times (if any!). Additional fees may be applied by this partner.” Partners handle certain registration services only, not licensing or testing — and the single most useful partner fact for a reader is in that disclaimer: partner help is not free the way a field-office visit is.
| Partner (from Santa Teresa’s own nearby list) | Address & hours on DMV listing | Qualifier that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Berm Insurance Agency | 5328 Monterey Rd Ste E, San Jose, CA 95111 — Mon–Fri 9:00 am–6:00 pm; Sat 10:00 am–2:00 pm; Sun Closed — phone 1-408-361-0121 | Monterey Road registration help, south of the office. Registration services only. |
| Registraciones Atlantida | 5304 Monterey Rd Suite A, San Jose, CA 95111 — listed Mon–Sun Closed — phone 1-408-362-0413 | Do not rely on this entry. A partner listed as closed all week is a do-not-rely entry, flagged here rather than silently listed as an option. |
| Montana Registration | 4122 Monterey Rd, San Jose, CA 95111 — Mon–Sat 10:00 am–6:00 pm; Sun Closed — phone 1-408-225-2105 | Monterey Road registration help. Registration services only. |
| AAA San Jose Almaden Expy Branch | 5026 Almaden Expy Ste 10, San Jose, CA 95118 — Mon–Fri 9:00 am–6:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am–5:00 pm; Sun Closed — phone 1-408-445-5900 | Member use only. A non-member cannot walk into AAA for DMV business on this listing. |
| AAA San Jose Capitol Express Branch | 1779 E Capitol Express Way, Ste D0A, San Jose, CA 95121 — Mon–Fri 9:00 am–6:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am–5:00 pm; Sun Closed — phone 1-408-574-2300 | Member use only. Same membership rule as the Almaden branch. |
| High Tech Insurance Solutions | 1669 Flanigan Dr, San Jose, CA 95121 — Mon–Sat 10:00 am–6:00 pm; Sun Closed — phone 1-408-440-5480 | East-side registration help. Registration services only. |
Neighbouring offices’ lists add labelled partner examples, each marked with its source office so a reader can check it: AAA Los Gatos Branch (15450 Los Gatos Blvd Ste 300, Los Gatos, CA 95032, member only, phone 1-408-399-8400; Tue–Fri 9:00 am–6:00 pm, Sat 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Sun Closed — from Los Gatos’s page; Monday hours are NOT printed here because the listing’s Monday row reads “9:00 pm — 6:00 pm”, an obvious glitch); AAA Gilroy Branch (7210 Camino Arroyo Ste 103, Gilroy, CA 95020, member only, Mon–Fri 9:00 am–6:00 pm, Sat 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Sun Closed, phone 1-408-847-9220 — from Gilroy’s page); Milla Registration Services Llc (190 Welburn Ave, Gilroy, CA 95020, Mon–Sun 9:00 am–9:00 pm, phone 1-408-766-2555 — from Gilroy’s page; the only seven-day partner in the cluster); Fasterlube Complete Auto Services (890 Tennant Station, Morgan Hill, CA 95037, Mon–Sat 10:00 am–6:00 pm, Sun Closed, phone 1-408-779-7373 — from Gilroy’s page; Morgan Hill’s partner coverage despite having no field office); and South Valley Business Services (66 First St Ste B, Gilroy, CA 95020, Mon–Thu 5:30 pm–7:00 pm only, Fri–Sun Closed, phone 1-408-767-2845 — from Gilroy’s page; evening-only hours, so flag the narrow window rather than presenting it as a daytime option).
The partner lesson generalises: a partner is a registration shortcut with a fee and a membership or hours catch, never a second DMV office. If your errand is licensing or testing, no partner on these lists helps you — that business belongs at a field office, and for a Santa Teresa reader that means Santa Teresa itself or a full-service neighbour from section 4. If your errand is a registration service and you value a shorter wait over a free visit, a partner is a legitimate option, provided you confirm the fee, the membership rule, and the hours on the partner’s own DMV listing before you go. The Registraciones Atlantida row is included precisely because a guide that silently drops awkward rows teaches readers to trust every row it prints; a guide that flags the closed row teaches readers to check every row, which is the safer habit.
Drive tests at Santa Teresa: what to expect
Santa Teresa lists “Testing” as a service, and that is the whole verified claim — this section explains what can honestly be built on it and what cannot. What can be built: a drive test is booked through the DMV appointment system as a drive-test appointment type, not as a general visit, and the DMV’s published “Ask DMV” guidance states that field offices require an appointment for a drive test, made online or by calling 1-800-777-0133. That guidance reaches this page through the DMV’s published Q&A, so it is attributed as DMV guidance and should be confirmed in the scheduler itself — but the planning rule it supports is solid: do not walk in expecting a road test without a drive-test booking. For a drive test, the same published guidance says to bring the permit, vehicle registration, and auto insurance. One more official detail, from the DMV handbook’s Driving Test Sites section: Santa Teresa is listed among the offices where you call 1-800-777-0133 to make an appointment for a noncommercial Class A or Class B driving test. That handbook page is old (last updated several years ago), so treat the list as the handbook’s, and confirm the booking route by phone — but it is an official confirmation that this office is on the DMV’s own drive-test map, not merely a “Testing” label. What cannot be built: no street-by-street route, no description of the test area, no test duration, no motorcycle-testing claim, and no commercial-testing claim, because none of those specifics appears on the Santa Teresa page. The Salinas Commercial Drive Test Center exists as a separate listing with its own earlier hours (Monday–Tuesday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–4:00 pm, Thursday–Friday 7:00 am–4:00 pm, Saturday–Sunday closed) — it is the commercial-test centre in this region’s listings, and its existence must not be read backwards into a claim that Santa Teresa does commercial testing.
The question every teen in San Jose asks about this office deserves an honest answer, not a repeated slogan: is Santa Teresa the easiest DMV for the driving test? The scoring criteria and point thresholds are the same statewide at every office, and the DMV publishes no current per-office pass rates — the only detailed public data is a 1994–95 pilot study. What exists instead is local reputation, and it contradicts itself. A Saratoga High student-paper ranking, drawing on the r/SanJose subreddit, calls Santa Teresa “almost a guaranteed pass” and “a clear winner as the best DMV in the area”, saying “the roads are wide, the traffic is sparse and the people at the DMV actually have a heart”. A road-test concierge’s blog ranks the same office last of twelve, with an 18% pass rate on its own small, undated client sample. Both cannot be right, and neither is official — so this page prints no pass-rate figure at all. The honest version is narrower: local teens and driving instructors describe Santa Teresa’s surrounding streets as wider and less chaotic than downtown Alma, which may make the drive feel calmer, and a companion student-paper piece reports teens now opting for the Santa Clara or Santa Teresa testing sites over Los Gatos (“Don’t go to the Los Gatos DMV”, in that piece’s words). Treat all of that as reputation, not as a route description and not as a promise — and choose the office on slot availability and side of town, not on an “easiest” claim. Readers preparing for a test should also read our driving test appointment guide, which covers the booking path in general; this page’s job is the Santa Teresa-specific facts, and it stops exactly where those facts stop.
Transit & getting there
This section makes no transit claim beyond the address, deliberately, except for two station facts labelled by source. Use a transit trip planner on the day of travel and check that day’s service, because routes and schedules change, and do not rely on a printed walk time from a directory. No bus line number presented as a timetable, no station-to-office walk time, and no “X minutes’ walk” appears on this page, because none was verified on an official source for this office, and a stale walk time is worse than no walk time: it sends a reader to the wrong stop with false confidence. What can be said, labelled by source: Santa Teresa station is the southern terminus of the VTA Blue Line, located at Santa Teresa Boulevard at San Ignacio Avenue, San Jose, CA 95119, in the same Santa Teresa neighbourhood as the office (Wikipedia, “Santa Teresa station”; the line opened in 1991 as part of the original Guadalupe line). Moovit’s station page lists bus routes 27, 42, 66, 68, and 201 as serving the station area, and our own San Jose guide documents VTA Line 66 as running Dixon Rd/Milpitas to Santa Teresa station via Downtown San Jose and San Jose State University. Name the Blue Line terminus and the station location as orientation, then use the VTA trip planner for the last leg — including the return journey, because the office closes at 5:00 pm and a late-afternoon visit that runs long can strand a transit-dependent reader if the return service has thinned out by evening. That is planning advice, not a timetable claim, and it applies to every office on this site, not just Santa Teresa. The official page also publishes no parking description for Santa Teresa, so this page publishes none either: if parking matters to your visit, check on arrival rather than trusting a directory’s parking paragraph, which is exactly the kind of unverified detail this guide refuses to invent. The only location fact this section anchors on is the office address itself, 180 Martinvale Lane, San Jose, CA 95119, which is what you enter into the planner.
What to bring
The Santa Teresa page does not publish a Santa Teresa-specific document checklist, so this section gives only general, widely-published preparation guidance and labels it as general: bring the confirmation details for any online application or appointment, original documents (not photocopies) for the transaction, a payment method from the accepted-payments list in section 2, and anything the specific transaction’s DMV instructions require. Read the DMV’s instructions for your specific transaction before you leave, because the checklist that matters is the transaction’s, not the office’s — the office does not publish its own, and any guide that prints a “Santa Teresa checklist” as if the office issued it is dressing up general advice as an official document. For a first REAL ID, independent guides consistently describe the document pattern as proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency — but that pattern was not verified on the Santa Teresa page, so treat it as general guidance to verify against the DMV’s REAL ID guidance before you travel, not as this office’s published requirement. For a drive test, the DMV’s published guidance says to bring the permit, vehicle registration, and auto insurance. One practical tip from real visitor reviews of this office, distilled without quoting any review count: complete your form BEFORE taking a queue number — visitors report taking a number, reaching the counter, and discovering a form must be filled out first, which means taking a new number and waiting in line again. Our document checklist covers the general preparation in more detail, and our holiday schedule guide is worth checking before a holiday-week visit, since holiday closures override the regular pattern in section 2. One last general point: if a document is unusual — a trust document, a court order, a foreign document — describe it exactly when you call the statewide line, because the counter’s answer will depend on the exact document, and a vague description earns a vague answer.
Timing that is actually verified
Everything in this section is a timing claim that survives checking against dmv.ca.gov on October 31, 2026 — and, just as usefully, the timing claims that do not survive. Verified: Wednesday opens at 9:00 am, not 8:00 am, in both calendar weeks. Verified: Saturday and Sunday are closed, in both calendar weeks. Verified: Friday October 30, 2026 — the day before build day — is an 8:00 am–5:00 pm day with no special closure visible in the calendar window, and Saturday October 31, 2026 — build day itself — is closed. Verified: Hollister is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays (October 27 and 29, November 3 and 5, all 8:00 am–5:00 pm), against any directory claim that it is a normal five-day office. Verified: the Mountain View IBC keeps earlier hours (7:00 am–4:00 pm, Wednesday 8:00 am–4:00 pm), distinct from every field office in this cluster. Not verified, and therefore not printed as fact anywhere on this page: any wait-time minutes (the office page’s widgets render as “Closed” when fetched while the office is closed, which is a snapshot, not a statistic); any “quietest hour” or “busiest day” pattern (no such pattern is published on the office page, and review-derived patterns are forbidden on this page by the task rules); any booking lead time or “books out 2–3 months” claim; any Saturday opening for any field office in this cluster; any pass-rate figure for any office; and any holiday list presented as Santa Teresa’s own schedule. The discipline behind that list is the whole editorial method of this site in one paragraph: the live dmv.ca.gov page governs, a cached copy does not, a directory does not, and a guide that says “not published” where the official page is silent is more useful than a guide that fills the silence with a guess. Santa Teresa is also a useful case study in why you should distrust thin directory content in general: the Santa Teresa Boulevard address error, the “Get in Line at 9 AM” stale instruction, the invented “4+ hours” wait, the Senter Road listing that still shows on maps, and the Hollister-as-open error are five different ways the same failure happens — a secondary site prints something the DMV’s own page does not say, and a reader plans a trip around it. Every office fact on this page was re-read on dmv.ca.gov on October 31, 2026, so that if any of those errors touches Santa Teresa itself, this page is the correction, not the source.
Ready to book?
Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the Martinvale Lane office for Santa Teresa visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go.
