California DMV Fees 2026: Driver's License, ID & Registration Costs

Knowing exactly what a DMV transaction costs before you walk in saves you a second trip. This guide lists the current California DMV fees for driver’s licenses, ID cards, and related services — verified against dmv.ca.gov in October 2026.

We’re an independent guide — not the DMV. Fee amounts below are taken from dmv.ca.gov’s published fee schedule (current as of October 2026). Fees can change, so the figures at the counter are the final word — but this gives you the right numbers to plan with.

TL;DR

1Driver’s license fees

The standard Class C license — the one most California drivers hold — costs $46 for an original or renewal (dmv.ca.gov fee schedule, October 2026). That covers the written knowledge test and up to three attempts at the drive test within the application period.

Common related license fees:

Tip: if your license is expiring within 60 days, renew early. You can renew online, by mail, or in person — and starting the renewal before it expires means you never have to pay for an interim credential out of necessity.

For the full cost picture by license type — motorcycle, commercial, endorsements, retests, and the stale figures other guides still print — see How Much Does a Driver’s License Cost in California?

The licence fee is only half the cost of riding an electric motorcycle: registration is $76 plus the $34 CHP fee and Vehicle License Fee on the street-legal track, or $54 for two years on a Green Sticker for an off-highway e-moto. See our e-moto registration in California guide for the full fee tables, the worked examples, and which track a Sur-Ron or Talaria actually belongs on.

2ID card fees

A California ID card — for those who don’t drive but need government-issued identification — costs $40 for an original or renewal (October 2026). Parents: a child’s card costs the same $40 — see our child ID card guide for the documents and parent rules. Key variations:

3Commercial license fees

Commercial licenses cost more, reflecting the additional testing and endorsement requirements:

Endorsement tests (hazmat, doubles/triples, tanker, passenger) carry their own fees and testing requirements — check the dmv.ca.gov commercial section for the current figures before your appointment, since these update separately from the standard schedule.

4REAL ID: the price is $0 extra

This surprises a lot of people: there is no separate REAL ID fee. A REAL ID driver’s license costs the same $46 as a standard license; a REAL ID ID card costs the same $40 as a standard ID. You’re paying for the card itself, not the REAL ID designation — the difference is only in the documents you bring and the star printed on the card. For the full ID-card cost breakdown — worked totals with the card surcharge, the $11 reduced-fee and free-card routes, fee history, and the 2027 watch — see our California ID card cost guide.

If you’re upgrading from a standard card to REAL ID before your renewal date, you’d pay the standard duplicate fee ($37) for the replacement card. Timing your REAL ID application with your renewal is the cheapest path.

A replacement is also the fix when the card never arrives in the mail at all — our guide to a licence that never arrived in the mail covers the 60-day threshold, the address trap, and whether to replace online or in person. Budget for the $37 fee: the DMV has published no free-reissue rule for cards lost in the mail.

6Paying: cards, cash, and the service charge

The DMV accepts cash, checks, money orders, debit cards, and credit cards. The catch: card payments include a service charge — 1.95% for online, kiosk, and phone payments, and 2.1% for in-office card payments (dmv.ca.gov, October 2026).

On a $46 license renewal, that’s roughly 90 cents online or 97 cents in the office — small, but worth knowing. If you’re paying for several transactions at once, a check or money order avoids the surcharge entirely. There’s no surcharge for cash.

7A note on vehicle registration fees

Vehicle registration fees vary widely by vehicle — they’re based on factors like the vehicle’s value, weight, and your county. Because a single “registration fee” number would be misleading, we’re not publishing one here. Use our California registration fee calculator for a line-by-line estimate, the DMV’s official registration fee calculator on dmv.ca.gov for your specific vehicle, or check your renewal notice, which itemizes every charge. Our California registration fees breakdown explains every renewal line in detail, including the DMV’s $76 vs $73 registration-fee figures. A VIN verification, where one is required, is not one of those lines — the DMV publishes no verification fee; see our VIN verification cost guide for the dated 2026 price table. If a text ever claims you owe a DMV fee and asks you to pay through a link, it is a scam — the DMV never sends texts with links to make payments; see our DMV text scam guide.

From January 1, 2027, those figures change — see our California DMV fees 2027 guide for the new amounts and a line-by-line renewal-notice decoder. If you need the DMV’s file on a vehicle itself — title, brands, lienholder, and registration history — see our California vehicle records guide: $2 online for your own car, $5 by mail or in person.

Disabled placards are a separate, small fee family: permanent placard renewal is free and a temporary placard costs $6. See Disabled Placard Renewal in California (2026) for the full renewal steps, the six-year signature rule, and the two Sacramento mailing boxes.

DP plates carry no additional fee of their own, but the vehicle’s normal registration fees still apply — and plates follow the registration cycle, not the placard’s two-year clock. The full credential-by-credential comparison is in our Disabled Placard vs Disabled Plates in California (2026).

Traveling with a placard brings its own questions — rental cars, out-of-state recognition, visitors coming into California, and the resident 30-day and nonresident up-to-90-day travel placards. See Traveling With a Disabled Placard in California (2026).

A lost, stolen, or damaged placard is replaced free if it is permanent — only a temporary replacement carries a fee, and the DMV sources do not state its amount. See How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Disabled Placard in California (2026) for REG 156, the online service, and the P.O. Box 942869 mailing address.

Misuse has its own price list, separate from fees: borrowing or lending a placard, displaying a cancelled or forged one, and parking with no credential at all are three different offenses. See Disabled Placard Misuse in California: Fines & Penalties (2026).

The biggest vehicle fee surprise is not a fee at all — it is use tax. A car bought out of state and brought into California within 12 months of purchase is presumed bought for California use, and use tax is collected at registration, minus a credit for tax already paid to another state. See the 12-month use-tax rule, worked credit examples, and the rebuttal checklist.

See the 12-month use-tax rule, worked credit examples, and the rebuttal checklist.

If you have already moved and first registration is due within 20 days, the new-resident version of that rule is New Resident Use Tax in California: The 12-Month Rule — the 20-day registration clock against the 365-day tax clock, move-anchored date examples, and what happens at the DMV counter.

And what does that first registration actually cost? A $30,000 car you have owned for more than a year costs roughly $541 to $606 all-in — every DMV line, county fees, and the smog check included — while the same car bought three months before the move can cost close to $2,700 once use tax is added. Our out-of-state registration cost guide breaks down every 2026 fee line by line, explains the 12-month use-tax test, and shows the worked arithmetic, including the $28 non-resident service fee that only out-of-state registrations pay.

On PCS orders? A nonresident service member or spouse who registers in California may claim a vehicle license fee exemption — see PCS orders to California: license & registration options.

Disabled veteran? A veteran who meets Vehicle Code §295.7 can get Disabled Veteran license plates — one vehicle is exempt from all registration and license fees, and the plates grant disabled-parking privileges by themselves. The application is REG 256V, not REG 195.

Buying or selling inside California instead? The transfer itself is a $15 fee, but the total is a stack — see how much a title transfer costs in California, including the two lines on which the DMV’s own fee pages disagree. AAA members can pay those same DMV fees at a AAA branch instead of a DMV office — our title transfer at AAA guide covers the whole visit.

A lost title adds $28 to that stack (or $0 if it never arrived) — see our duplicate title cost guide for the full fee table and worked totals.

Front plate missing? The plate-display rules carry their own three dollar figures, kept apart — see front license plate rules in California: the $25 fix-it transaction fee, the $28 replacement plate pair, and the $250 obscuring-device fine. For every plate type and its fee, see our California license plate types guide. For the full personalized-plate cost breakdown — every design’s initial, renewal, replacement, reassignment, and retention fee, plus five-year totals — see our personalized plates cost guide. For the full replacement process — online, in person, and by mail — see our replacement license plates guide. The full cover rules — which covers are legal, why the $1,000 fine is for sellers not drivers, and how to clear a cover ticket — are in our license plate covers guide. Frames are judged separately — a frame is legal only if it covers nothing: see our license plate frame law guide.

Fee Calculation Examples (worked, verified)

Those totals are what you pay — where the money goes is a separate question: the VLF to your city and county, the TIF to roads and transit, the CHP fee to patrol, and only the base fee to the DMV itself. Our where your registration fees go guide traces every line on the bill to its fund.

Missed the new-resident 20-day deadline? Your first California registration is an original registration, so its penalties follow Vehicle Code §9554.5 — not the renewal schedule. See the missed-deadline penalty tiers, worked examples, and cure steps.

Renewal late? Renewal penalties follow a different schedule (Vehicle Code §9554) — five tiers from 10% to 160% of the VLF, plus flat registration and CHP penalties. See the late registration penalties guide for the full table, the DMV’s own conflicting CHP figures, and the waiver rules.

Retest Economics (differentiator — nobody covers end-to-end)

“Outdated Fee” Callout (differentiator)

Multiple competitor pages still show stale figures ($41/$33/$8). The verified 2026 figures are $46/$37/$9 (Class C) — a page callout “if you see $41, that page is outdated” builds trust. Traffic-school fees are not DMV fees at all — they are court fees, $52–$82 by county, plus course tuition — see our traffic school cost guide for the county table and worked totals.
