Santa Maria DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The DMV field office for Santa Maria and the Central Coast’s north county — eight counter services, licenses, REAL ID, and behind-the-wheel drive tests at 2850 Santa Maria Way. But three traps catch Santa Maria readers: older directories still print a stale McClelland Street address, this office has NO on-site kiosk, and the county-seat office in Santa Barbara is closed until January 15, 2027. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov.

2850 Santa Maria Way, Santa Maria, CA 93455
Santa Barbara County — north-county city · counter-service office, no on-site kiosk · Santa Barbara office closed until January 15, 2027

1Santa Maria’s north-county office — and the three traps

If you live in Santa Maria, this is your DMV office — and it is a good one to have. The field office at 2850 Santa Maria Way is a counter-service office: all eight services on the DMV’s list, from licensing and testing to title transfers, registration, plates, replacements, and records. That combination matters more than it sounds, because in the Central Coast cluster the nearby offices are not interchangeable copies of Santa Maria. The closest alternative does not fix a kiosk task either, the kiosk offices sit a drive away in San Luis Obispo and Ventura County, and the office most Santa Barbara County readers would pick second — the county-seat office in Santa Barbara — is closed until January 15, 2027. This page tells you which office fits which task, so you do not drive to the wrong kind of DMV.

Trap one: the stale address. Older directories still print 523 S McClelland Street, Santa Maria, CA 93454 as the Santa Maria DMV office. That address appears in a 2017-era office list that search still surfaces — but dmv.ca.gov’s current listing, confirmed on two of its own nearby lists on build day, is 2850 Santa Maria Way, Santa Maria, CA 93455. Use the Santa Maria Way address. And notice what McClelland Street is today: partner territory. dmv.ca.gov’s own Santa Maria nearby lists put a business partner at 1622 S Mcclelland St Ste A. A reader who navigates to McClelland Street looking for the field office lands at a partner storefront, not at the DMV. If a guide, a map pin, or a directory sends you to McClelland Street for a license, a REAL ID, or a drive test, that guide is out of date.

Trap two: the kiosk gap. Santa Maria’s official services list has eight entries and no Self Service Terminals line — unlike San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Oxnard, which all carry the kiosk headline and the ninth service. So Santa Maria cannot do a walk-up kiosk renewal at the office itself. That does not leave you stranded: Santa Maria proper has two grocery kiosks, both on South Broadway, and both run daily into the late evening, including weekends when every field office is closed. Section 6 gives you both, with hours. What the kiosks cannot do is everything else — no REAL ID, no drive test, no knowledge test, no first license. If your task is one of those, you need the office, not a kiosk.

Trap three: the Santa Barbara closure. The Santa Barbara field office at 535 Castillo Street closed on October 23, 2026 and reopens January 15, 2027, under a DMV press release dated October 16, 2026 — and its own dmv.ca.gov page shows an all-closed calendar on build day, which confirms the closure is live, not announced. Until it reopens, do not drive to Santa Barbara for DMV business. The working south fallback is Goleta, at 7127 Hollister Avenue Suites 24/26, with Ventura and Oxnard as the wider kiosk-equipped fallbacks. Goleta runs the same eight counter services as Santa Maria, minus a kiosk — so a Goleta trip fixes a counter task, not a kiosk task.

The disambiguation that saves a wasted trip. Santa Maria and Santa Barbara are two different cities in one county. Santa Barbara city is the county seat; Santa Maria is the county’s north-county city, with its own field office. Searches for “Santa Barbara County DMV” land on both, and the two offices’ names get swapped in conversation constantly. Keep them separate: Santa Maria (2850 Santa Maria Way, open, no kiosk) versus Santa Barbara (535 Castillo Street, closed until January 15, 2027). If someone tells you to “just go to the Santa Barbara DMV,” ask which city they mean — and check the closure before you drive south.

2Hours, services & what this office offers

The weekly pattern is the statewide field-office pattern, and Santa Maria follows it exactly. The one day to watch is Wednesday: the office opens at 9:00 AM instead of 8:00 AM. Arrive at 8:00 on a Wednesday and you wait outside an hour for a door that was never going to open. Weekends are closed, always — no field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Santa Maria.

Tuesday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Wednesday9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late)
Thursday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Friday8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
SaturdayClosed
SundayClosed

State holidays can change hours — confirm on the official office page before you go, and check our California DMV holidays guide if your visit falls near a holiday. The office’s live wait-time display on dmv.ca.gov is the only wait-time figure worth trusting; this page prints no wait-time minutes, because a snapshot taken at any hour is stale by the next.

The office provides eight services, exactly as listed on dmv.ca.gov. Read the list as a checklist for your task, not as a slogan: if your task is not on it, this office does not do it — and neither does any kiosk or partner version of it.

Service (official list)What it means for your visit
Licensing ServicesDriver licenses (new, renewal, replacement), ID cards, and REAL ID applications. REAL ID first applications require an in-person office visit with original documents — this is the single biggest reason people still visit in person. Start the application online first for a confirmation code; it shortens counter time.
TestingKnowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests, booked as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. Knowledge tests are generally not offered late in the day, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test. Motorcycle skills-test availability is NOT itemized for this office on its official listings — check the scheduler rather than assuming it.
Title TransfersPrivate-party sales, family transfers, out-of-state titles. Bring the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office.
RegistrationNew vehicle registrations, renewals that cannot be completed online, and planned non-operation (PNO) filings for vehicles going into storage. Simple registration renewals are often kiosk or online tasks instead — check section 6 before booking.
Plates, Permits, & PlacardsReplacement license plates, temporary operating permits, disabled person placards. Disabled placard applications are one of the few counter services with no online substitute — bring the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional.
Replace Lost/Stolen/DamagedDuplicate driver licenses, registration cards, and vehicle titles.
RecordsDriver and vehicle record requests. Simple record-copy requests are handled through out-of-office options in many cases — check eligibility before visiting.
Request miscellaneous original documentsLess common document requests handled at the counter for paperwork outside the standard categories.
NOT here: Self Service TerminalsUnlike San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Oxnard, Santa Maria has no on-site kiosk. Kiosk tasks go to the two South Broadway grocery kiosks in section 6 — not to 2850 Santa Maria Way.

Payments. Field offices accept cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order — the official sitewide line. If a third-party site tells you the office is cash-only, or card-only, it is wrong; the six methods above are what dmv.ca.gov prints for every field office.

Phone. There is no office-specific number published for Santa Maria. Use the DMV’s statewide line, 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). Any “direct Santa Maria DMV number” in a directory is unverified — use the statewide line, and never pay a site that charges you to book: booking on the official scheduler is free.

3Booking an appointment here

Booking happens only on the DMV’s official scheduler, and it is free. Start at the scheduler, choose the appointment type FIRST, and only then pick the office — because the type you pick decides which queue you join, and the wrong queue means rebooking.

Step 1 — Pick the right appointment type. A field-office visit covers licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, registration, and most counter services. A behind-the-wheel drive test is a SEPARATE appointment type. Book “drive test” for the road test, not a general visit. This is the single most common booking mistake at every office in this guide series, and it costs a second trip.

Step 2 — Search by ZIP or city. Search by ZIP 93455 or “Santa Maria” and pick the Santa Maria Way office — not a partner storefront on Broadway, and not a kiosk address. Partners and kiosks do not take appointments for office tasks, and a kiosk address in the scheduler search will not give you a counter appointment.

Step 3 — Prefer phone? Call 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). TTY: 1-800-368-4327.

Step 4 — If Santa Maria shows nothing, widen BY TASK, not by distance alone. For a kiosk task, go to San Luis Obispo (the closest kiosk office) or to a South Broadway grocery kiosk — do not drive to Lompoc or Goleta for a kiosk task, because neither has an on-site kiosk either. For a counter task, Lompoc is the closest fallback, Goleta is the working south fallback while Santa Barbara is closed, and Ventura or Oxnard are the wider kiosk-equipped fallbacks. Offices serve all California residents regardless of address, so a neighboring county’s office is a legitimate booking. Check back: cancellations open slots.

Step 5 — Same-day option. Check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option. Do not rely on descriptions of the old Get in Line system: it was discontinued around March 2026 and QR check-in succeeded it in April 2026. What the office page shows on the morning of your visit is what counts.

Step 6 — Before you go. Confirm the visit is needed at all (simple renewals and record copies go online, to a kiosk, or by mail), run the documents checklist the night before (originals only — photocopies are never accepted), and confirm hours on the official office page the day before, especially on Wednesdays (9:00 AM opening) and around state holidays. A REAL ID visit with one missing document is a wasted trip; a registration visit with the wrong title paperwork is another.

4Nearby DMV offices: check the services list before you drive

Every Central Coast reader eventually asks the same question: “If Santa Maria is booked, where do I go?” The answer depends on your task, because the nearby offices are not copies of each other. Three of them have kiosks and nine services; four of them, Santa Maria included, have eight services and no kiosk; and one of them — the county-seat office — is closed until January 15, 2027. Drive to the office that matches your task, not the one that is merely closest.

OfficeAddressKiosk on siteWhat to know before you drive
Santa Maria (this office)2850 Santa Maria Way, Santa Maria, CA 93455No8 counter services incl. Testing. The north-county default for counter tasks; NOT a kiosk stop.
Lompoc1601 N H St, Lompoc, CA 93436No8 counter services incl. Testing. Closest fallback office — but it does NOT fix a kiosk task either.
San Luis Obispo3190 S Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401YesFull 9 services. Closest office that CAN do a kiosk transaction. Location notice: it cannot accommodate vehicles over 65 feet for the commercial drive test — long-vehicle CDL testers must pick another office.
Goleta7127 Hollister Avenue Suite 24/26, Goleta, CA 93117No8 counter services incl. Testing. The working south fallback while Santa Barbara is closed. Same street number as the Albertsons Goleta kiosk — the office is Suites 24/26, the kiosk is inside the grocery store; they are different listings.
Santa Barbara (county seat)535 Castillo Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101NoCLOSED October 23, 2026 – January 15, 2027 (DMV press release October 16, 2026; own-page calendar all-closed on build day). Do NOT drive here until it reopens.
Ventura4260 Market Street, Ventura, CA 93003YesFull 9 services. Wider south fallback with a kiosk.
Oxnard4050 Saviers Road, Oxnard, CA 93033YesFull 9 services. See our Oxnard DMV guide for its Express-office trap and kiosk cluster.
Santa Paula250 W Harvard Boulevard A, Santa Paula, CA 93060NoCounter-services fallback in the Ventura County interior; no kiosk.

The services trap, stated plainly. A directory that lists “DMV offices near Santa Maria” makes them look identical. They are not. Lompoc and Goleta look like Santa Maria (eight services, no kiosk); San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Oxnard look like each other (nine services, kiosk on site); Santa Barbara looks open on old listings and is in fact closed until January 15, 2027. Before you drive anywhere in this cluster, check that office’s own dmv.ca.gov services list for the two things that decide your trip: does it list Self Service Terminals, and is its calendar open this week? Two checks, thirty seconds, one saved trip.

What about Orcutt and Guadalupe? Neither has a DMV field office of its own on dmv.ca.gov — their DMV presence is kiosks and partners, not offices. The same holds for Nipomo, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Solvang, Buellton, and Atascadero, whose dmv.ca.gov field-office pages all return “Page not found” on build day. Residents of those communities use Santa Maria for counter tasks (licenses, REAL ID, drive tests, title transfers) and the South Broadway kiosks or a partner for registration-type work. If a directory shows you a “DMV office” in Orcutt or Guadalupe, check the address against dmv.ca.gov before you drive: it is almost certainly a partner storefront, not a field office.

5Frequently asked questions

Santa Maria: the straight answers to the questions readers actually ask, each verified against dmv.ca.gov on build day.

What are the Santa Maria DMV’s hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. State holidays can change hours — confirm on the official office page before you go. No field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Santa Maria.

Is the Santa Maria DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?

No — the field office is closed both days. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, the grocery kiosks run daily instead: the Albertsons kiosk in Santa Maria proper (2320 S. Broadway) is open Monday–Friday 6:00 AM–11:00 PM, Saturday 6:00 AM–10:30 PM, and Sunday 6:00 AM–11:00 PM, and the Foods Co kiosk (1465 S. Broadway) runs Monday–Sunday 5:00 AM–12:00 AM. REAL ID, licenses, and drive tests need the office on a weekday.

What is the Santa Maria DMV address?

2850 Santa Maria Way, Santa Maria, CA 93455, in Santa Barbara County. Do not use the stale 523 S McClelland Street listing that older directories still print, and do not confuse the office with the partner storefronts on South Broadway or the partner at 1622 S Mcclelland St Ste A — none of those is the field office.

What is the phone number for the Santa Maria DMV?

Use the DMV’s statewide line: 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). The Santa Maria office page publishes no office-specific number, and no direct Santa Maria number from a directory is verified — use the statewide line.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

Book first. Appointments are free on the official DMV scheduler, and an appointment beats a walk-in at any hour. If you go without one, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option, and bring everything on our documents checklist so you do not burn a second trip. Remember the booking-type rule: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types — booking the wrong type means rebooking.

What services does the Santa Maria DMV offer — does it do driving tests?

Yes — “Testing” is on the office’s official services list, so knowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests are booked here as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. Book “drive test” for the road test, not a general office visit. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official listings, so check the scheduler rather than assuming it. And the office has no on-site kiosk: its services list has no Self Service Terminals entry.

Does the Santa Maria DMV have a self-service kiosk, and where is the nearest kiosk?

No — the Santa Maria field office has no on-site kiosk. The nearest kiosks are the two grocery kiosks in Santa Maria proper: Albertsons at 2320 S. Broadway (Monday–Friday 6:00 AM–11:00 PM, Saturday 6:00 AM–10:30 PM, Sunday 6:00 AM–11:00 PM) and Foods Co at 1465 S. Broadway (Monday–Sunday 5:00 AM–12:00 AM). Kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records. They do NOT issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses. More in section 6 and our DMV kiosk guide.

What should I bring for a REAL ID, license, or registration visit?

For REAL ID: one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency — originals or certified copies only, never photocopies — plus the completed application (start it online first for a confirmation code). For a license visit: the application, identity and residency documents, and your current license if you have one. For registration or title work: the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Run our documents checklist the night before; a missing original is the most common reason for a second trip.

Is the Santa Barbara DMV open? I usually go there instead.

No — the Santa Barbara field office at 535 Castillo Street closed on October 23, 2026 and reopens January 15, 2027 (DMV press release October 16, 2026; its own dmv.ca.gov page shows an all-closed calendar). Until it reopens, use Goleta (7127 Hollister Avenue Suites 24/26) for counter tasks, or Ventura or Oxnard if you need a kiosk office — or Santa Maria for north-county tasks.

If the Santa Maria DMV is fully booked, which nearby office should I try instead?

By task, not by distance alone: San Luis Obispo (3190 S Higuera Street) for the closest kiosk office with full services; Lompoc (1601 N H St) for the closest counter fallback; Goleta (7127 Hollister Avenue Suites 24/26) for the working south fallback while Santa Barbara is closed; Ventura (4260 Market Street) or Oxnard (4050 Saviers Road) for kiosk offices further south. Offices serve all California residents regardless of address, so a neighboring county’s office is a legitimate booking.

Can I renew my vehicle registration at a kiosk or a DMV business partner instead of going to the Santa Maria office?

Yes, for renewals and record copies: the Albertsons and Foods Co kiosks on South Broadway handle registration renewals and planned non-operation, and Santa Maria’s business partners (AAA members-only, Sandys, Ritos, Smart Stop, Ferreyra, Coast Auto, Julio’s, El Puma) handle registration-type work for an extra fee — ask the price before handing over paperwork, and call first for the three partners whose dmv.ca.gov listings show an all-week-closed anomaly (Inmigracion, Reyco, Latinos). Kiosks and partners do NOT issue REAL ID, run tests, or issue first-time licenses — those need the office.

How do I get to the Santa Maria DMV by bus, and is there parking information available?

Use the Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT) trip planner and check the stop for 2850 Santa Maria Way before you travel — SMRT is the City of Santa Maria’s bus service (formerly Santa Maria Area Transit) and also runs intercity routes to Guadalupe, Lompoc, Buellton, Solvang, and San Luis Obispo. This page asserts no specific route or stop for the office and no walking directions from any stop, because no source verifies a stop-level claim. On parking: the office does not publish parking details, and this page makes no claim about the lot, capacity, or street parking — arrive early and allow time to park.

6Kiosks: no on-site machine, but two South Broadway kiosks that cover weekends

Santa Maria is the rare office page where the kiosk section is good news, not a warning. The office itself has no kiosk — but Santa Maria proper has two grocery kiosks, both on South Broadway, and both run daily into the late evening. For a registration renewal or a record copy, that pair beats a weekday office visit outright: they are open when the office is closed, including every weekend.

Kiosk services, in the DMV’s own description, are “self-serve stations where you can complete certain registration services and request driver or vehicle records. The range of services varies by kiosk location.” In practice that means registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records — and it means NOT appointments, NOT drive tests, NOT knowledge tests, and NOT REAL ID issuance. The decision rule is simple: if the task is a renewal or a record copy, use a South Broadway kiosk and skip the office queue entirely; if the task is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, book the office. See our DMV kiosk guide for the full kiosk-vs-office breakdown.

One more kiosk trap, for southbound readers. The Goleta kiosk and the Goleta field office share the street number 7127 Hollister Avenue. The kiosk is inside the Albertsons grocery store; the field office is Suites 24/26. If you need a counter task, go to the suites; if you need a kiosk task, go to the store. Same number, different door — check which listing you need before you drive.

7DMV partners near Santa Maria: registration help for an extra fee

DMV business partners are businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services, often with much shorter wait times — and additional fees may be applied by the partner. That last clause is the whole section: partners are fast, partners are convenient, and partners charge extra. Ask the price before handing over paperwork, and never hand a partner a task it cannot do — partners do not issue licenses, run tests, or process REAL ID.

Why three partners have no hours here. On dmv.ca.gov’s Santa Maria nearby lists, Inmigracion, Reyco, and Latinos all show a “Mon–Sun Closed” calendar — every day closed, all week. A listed business that is closed every day of the week is a data anomaly, not plausible hours, and this page refuses to print an anomaly as if it were a fact. Those three are printed with name, address, and phone only, plus “call before visiting.” The same anomaly pattern shows up for one Lompoc partner (Fiesta Auto Insurance, 726 North H St, Lompoc, CA 93436, 1-831-537-3411) and one Santa Barbara partner (Torresanta Insurance Services, 429 N Milpas Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93103, 1-805-899-8824) — same treatment if you meet them: name, address, phone, call first.

Which partner, for which reader? AAA Santa Maria is members-only — if you are not a member, skip it and use a storefront partner. Sandys is the only Santa Maria partner in this set with a Wednesday-afternoon opening pattern worth noting (1:00 PM–6:00 PM on Wednesdays, versus 9:00 AM starts on other weekdays) — check its hours before a Wednesday visit rather than assuming a morning opening. Ritos runs the latest weekday hours in the set (to 7:00 PM Monday–Saturday). None of that makes a partner a substitute for the office: a partner cannot give you a REAL ID, a license, or a drive test, no matter how convenient its hours are.

8Drive tests at Santa Maria: what to expect

Santa Maria lists “Testing” on its official services list, so knowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests are booked here as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. Book “drive test” for the road test — a general office visit will not put you in a test car. And one more time, because it is the mistake that costs a second trip: motorcycle skills-test availability is NOT itemized for this office on its official listings. If you need a motorcycle test, check the scheduler for this office rather than assuming it is offered here.

What the examiner checks before you drive. The pre-drive vehicle check is statewide, not Santa Maria-specific: brakes (foot and parking), horn, turn signals front and back, brake lights, tires, unobstructed windshield, working doors and windows, a driver-side window that rolls down, seat belts, two mirrors, two plates with current registration, defroster, hazard lights, headlights, and wipers. The examiner will ask you to locate and demonstrate controls — window, wipers, signals, brake lights, horn, parking brake, defroster, hazards, headlights — and arm signals. A car that fails the pre-drive check does not take the test that day, so check every item the night before, not in the office parking lot.

What the test itself covers. Left and right turns, stops at intersections, lane changes, straight-line reversing, curbside parking, traffic checks, and space management; freeway driving only briefly, if at all. No street-by-street examiner route is asserted for Santa Maria anywhere on this page, because no verified turn-by-turn route text exists for this office — any site that sells you “the Santa Maria DMV test route” street by street is inventing it. Practice the skills, not a route: residential speed control, full stops (not rolling stops), mirror and blind-spot checks before every lane change, speed matched to conditions rather than just the posted limit, and pedestrian awareness at crosswalks and intersections. Residential segments near any office — parked cars, cross-street traffic, pedestrians — are where test-takers most often lose points, not on wide arterials.

Bring to the test. Your instruction permit (or existing license); a licensed driver to accompany you; current vehicle registration; and proof of insurance for the test vehicle. The accompanying driver waits at the office during the test. After a failed test, a waiting period applies before retesting and the number of attempts is limited — the scheduler shows when you can rebook; this page prints no specific wait or attempt numbers without a Handbook citation. Parallel parking, other than pulling alongside a curb, is generally NOT required in the California test — “generally” only, never presented as an official guarantee. See our driving test appointment guide and driving test tips for the full test-day preparation.

9Transit, parking & getting there

Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT) is the City of Santa Maria’s bus service — formerly Santa Maria Area Transit (SMAT) — and it serves Santa Maria itself plus intercity routes within Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County, including routes to Guadalupe, Lompoc, Buellton, Solvang, Vandenberg Space Force Base, and San Luis Obispo. The Santa Maria Transit Center is the city hub.The Santa Maria Transit Center is the city hub. For weekday travel toward Goleta and Santa Barbara, the Clean Air Express commuter service also serves Santa Maria — check its current schedule before travelling; this page prints no timetable for it. For a DMV trip by bus, use the SMRT trip planner and check the stop for 2850 Santa Maria Way before you travel. That is the honest limit of what this page can tell you: no source verifies a specific bus stop’s walking distance to the office, and no route is asserted to stop at the office door. Any guide that prints “get off at X, walk Y minutes” for this office is guessing — use the planner, and check the stop on the day you travel, because stops and detours change.

On parking, the same discipline applies. No official or credible source describes the Santa Maria office’s current lot, capacity, street parking, or accessibility spaces, so this page makes no parking claim at all — no “free parking,” no “large lot,” no parking-difficulty warning. Arrive early and allow time to park; the office does not publish parking details, and a guide that describes the lot in detail is describing something it never verified. What is verified is the address itself: 2850 Santa Maria Way, Santa Maria, CA 93455 — and the warning that older directories still print 523 S McClelland Street, which is not the field office. Navigate to Santa Maria Way, not McClelland Street.

City context, briefly. Santa Maria is a city in Santa Barbara County on California’s Central Coast, with a population of 109,695 on the Census Bureau’s April 1, 2020 population estimates base. It is the county’s north-county city — and it is NOT the county seat. Santa Barbara city is the county seat, with its own field office, which is closed until January 15, 2027. Santa Maria’s office therefore carries the north county’s everyday DMV load, including readers from nearby Orcutt and Guadalupe, whose own DMV presence is kiosks and partners rather than a field office. That is why the office’s two traps — the stale address and the missing kiosk — matter beyond Santa Maria itself: a wrong address or a wrong kiosk assumption wastes a trip for the whole north county, not just one city.

10What to bring

Missing paperwork is the most expensive mistake at a busy office — it turns one trip into two. The rule that covers every visit type is simple: originals only. Photocopies are never accepted for identity, residency, or title documents. Run the documents checklist the night before, and pack by visit type.

REAL ID first application. One proof of identity (valid US passport or passport card, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card, or similar); your Social Security number, provided on the application; and TWO different documents proving California residency showing your first and last name and the mailing address that will appear on the card (mortgage bill, home utility or cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, bank statement, or similar). If the true full name on your document does not match your current true full name, bring the additional name-change documentation. Start the application online first for a confirmation code. A non-REAL ID card reads “Federal Limits Apply” and cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025. See our REAL ID appointment guide for the full document list.

License or ID visit. The completed application, proof of identity, your Social Security number, proof of California residency, and your current license or ID if you have one. For a minor’s permit application, add the parent or guardian signature and the driver-education paperwork the application requires — check the current form list on dmv.ca.gov before you go, because form numbers change.

Registration or title visit. The signed title, smog certification where required, odometer disclosure, current registration card if you have one, and proof of insurance. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office — that is an office task, not a kiosk or partner task. For a disabled placard application, bring the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional.

Drive test visit. Instruction permit (or existing license), a licensed driver to accompany you, current vehicle registration, and proof of insurance for the test vehicle — plus a car that passes the pre-drive check in section 8. Check every light, signal, and control the night before.

11Best and worst times to visit

An appointment at any hour beats a walk-in at any hour — that is the whole section in one sentence, and it is the only timing claim this page needs. Beyond it, three timing facts are verified and worth knowing. First, Wednesdays open at 9:00 AM, not 8:00 AM — an 8:00 AM Wednesday arrival waits outside for a door that was never going to open. Second, knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered late in the day, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test. Third, weekends are closed, always — and the South Broadway kiosks, not the office, are the weekend option for renewals and records. This page prints no “busiest day” ranking and no wait-time minutes: the office’s live wait-time display on dmv.ca.gov is the only figure that is current, and any guide that ranks Santa Maria’s days by busyness is ranking a snapshot it took once. Book an appointment, bring originals, check Wednesday hours, and check the holiday schedule before a holiday-week visit — that is the complete timing strategy.

Ready to book?

Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the Santa Maria Way office for Santa Maria, Orcutt, Guadalupe, and north-county visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test, to use the South Broadway kiosks for renewals and records instead of an office visit, and to use Goleta — not Santa Barbara — for southbound counter tasks until January 15, 2027. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go.
