Visalia DMV: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide
The DMV field office for Visalia and Tulare County — eight counter services, drive tests, and REAL ID, at 1711 East Main Street. One thing to know before you go: this office has no self-service kiosk, while Tulare, Porterville, Hanford and Delano all do. Independent guide, verified against dmv.ca.gov — and yes, the office is open: it reopened April 14, 2026.
Verified against dmv.ca.gov: October 26, 2026 · Independent guide — not affiliated with the California DMV or dmv.ca.gov. Booking always happens on the official DMV scheduler; this page helps you prepare.
1Visalia’s county-seat office — full counter services, no kiosk
If you live in Visalia, this is your DMV office — and it is a good one to have for everything that needs a person behind a counter. The field office at 1711 East Main Street is the county-seat office for Tulare County: eight counter services, from licensing and testing to title transfers, registration, plates, replacements, records, and miscellaneous documents. It is the office for Visalia, and for the surrounding farm communities — Farmersville, Exeter, Lindsay, Dinuba, Woodlake, Ivanhoe, Corcoran and Lemoore have no field office of their own on dmv.ca.gov, so their residents use Visalia (or the alternatives in section 4) for counter services. That county-seat role is exactly why the office matters, and exactly why one missing service matters so much.
The missing service is the kiosk. Visalia has no self-service kiosk on site. Its own dmv.ca.gov page lists eight services — and “Self Service Terminals” is not among them — and its card carries no “Kiosk Available” badge on any dmv.ca.gov nearby list checked for this guide, while Tulare, Porterville, Hanford and Delano all carry that badge on those same lists. That is the opposite of the Glendale story (kiosk on site) and the same as Fremont and Newhall (no on-site kiosk). The practical consequence is simple and worth stating before anything else: if your task is a registration renewal or a record copy and you want a kiosk, do not drive to 1711 East Main Street expecting one — go to Tulare’s office kiosk, or to a grocery kiosk in Tulare, Dinuba, Reedley or Hanford (section 6). If your task is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it anyway — book the Visalia office, because that is what the counter is for.
The second correction on this page is about a closure that is over. The Visalia office is open. It closed on December 26 for upgrades and reopened to the public at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, according to the DMV’s own press release of April 8, 2026 — which names the upgrade work as new restroom fixtures and resurfacing part of the parking lot. Some AI-written guides still say the Visalia office is “currently undergoing renovations until March 2026.” That was true in the winter and is false now; any guide that still calls Visalia closed or renovating is stale, and this page leads with the reopened status so you do not plan around a closure that ended in April. Note what this paragraph is not: it is closure history from a press release, not a claim about current parking conditions — this page makes no claim about the office’s lot, capacity, or street parking today, because no official source describes them.
The third correction is a name trap. Visalia is not Tulare. Visalia is the county seat of Tulare County; Tulare is a separate city south of Visalia, in the same county, with its own field office at 274 E Cross Avenue — and its own kiosk. “Tulare County” is the county; “Tulare” is also a city in it, and searches for “Tulare County DMV” land on both offices. Keep them apart: Visalia (1711 East Main Street, eight services, no kiosk) for county-seat counter work, Tulare (274 E Cross Avenue, nine services, kiosk on site) for the closest kiosk transaction. Section 4 lays out the whole decision table, and the rule to remember is simple: match the task to the office before you drive — kiosk task vs counter task first, then direction of travel, never an invented wait-time ranking.
The scale is worth stating plainly, because it explains the demand. Visalia is a city in Tulare County, in California’s Central Valley, with a 2020 census population of 141,384 (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, April 1, 2020 count) — the largest city in Tulare County and its county seat. Tulare (city) is not the county seat — Visalia is, and any guide that calls Tulare the county seat, or treats the two cities as one office, is wrong. Visalia is the economic hub of an agricultural county, which is why its office carries demand from a ring of smaller towns as well as its own residents. And one scope note before you book, because it saves more trips than any other paragraph on this page: routine services get no counter service at all. Simple registration renewals, eligible license and ID renewals, record copies, and replacement licenses are routed by the DMV to online, kiosk, mail, or phone options. Before driving to East Main Street, check whether your task is actually an office task — section 6 tells you when the kiosk wins, and when only the counter will do.
Finally, a note on what this page is and is not. This is an independent guide, not the DMV. We cannot book for you, we cannot see live slot availability, and we never charge for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below — address, hours, services, payments, nearby offices, kiosks, partners — was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on October 26, 2026. Where a fact could not be verified on an official source, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no street-by-street drive-test route, no motorcycle-testing claim, no current parking description, no wait-time minutes, no review numbers, and no fee dollar amounts appear anywhere below.
2Hours, services & what this office offers
The weekly pattern is the standard California field-office pattern, confirmed on dmv.ca.gov’s listings for this office (which print the same pattern across the Tulare, Porterville, Hanford, Delano and partner pages’ nearby lists):
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Tuesday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Wednesday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (opens one hour late) |
| Thursday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
| Saturday – Sunday | Closed |
The Wednesday quirk is the detail that catches the most people: every other weekday opens at 8:00 AM, but Wednesday opens at 9:00 AM. Do not show up at 8:00 on a Wednesday expecting the early-bird advantage — you will wait outside for an hour. Weekends are closed, full stop. No California DMV field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Visalia — and be equally skeptical of any listing that shows Visalia as “closed all week”: one dmv.ca.gov kiosk page’s nearby list does exactly that, and it reads as a data anomaly for a live, reopened office, not as plausible hours. The standard pattern above, confirmed across the other dmv.ca.gov lists, is what this page prints. State holidays can change hours too, so confirm on the official office page the day before you go — see our California DMV holidays guide. And one timing rule that applies statewide: knowledge (written) tests are generally not offered late in the day, so do not book the last slot of the day and expect to test.
The office provides eight services, exactly as listed on its own dmv.ca.gov page — and the ninth service, the one its neighbours have and it does not, is the point of this section. Unlike Tulare, Porterville, Hanford and Delano — whose pages carry the headline “This office has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line” — Visalia’s page carries no kiosk headline, no kiosk badge, and no “Self Service Terminals” line.
| Service (official list) | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|
| Licensing Services | Driver licenses (new, renewal, replacement), ID cards, and REAL ID applications. REAL ID first applications require an in-person office visit with original documents — this is the single biggest reason people still visit in person. Start the application online first for a confirmation code; it shortens counter time. AB 60 licenses are also handled here: California issues driver licenses regardless of immigration status, accepting a foreign passport or matrícula consular as identity, with cards marked “Federal Limits Apply”. |
| Testing | Knowledge (written) tests and behind-the-wheel drive tests, booked as separate appointment types in the official scheduler. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official listings — check the scheduler rather than assuming it. See the drive-test section. |
| Title Transfers | Private-party sales, family transfers, and out-of-state titles. Bring the signed title, smog certification where required, and odometer disclosure. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office. |
| Registration | New vehicle registrations, renewals that cannot be completed online, and planned non-operation (PNO) filings for vehicles going into storage. Simple registration renewals are often kiosk or online tasks instead — check the kiosk section before booking. |
| Plates, Permits, & Placards | Replacement license plates, temporary operating permits, and disabled person placards. Disabled placard applications are one of the few counter services with no online substitute — bring the medical certification form completed by a licensed medical professional. |
| Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged | Duplicate driver licenses, registration cards, and vehicle titles when the original is lost, stolen, or damaged. |
| Records | Driver and vehicle record requests. Note that simple record-copy requests are handled through out-of-office options only in many cases — check eligibility before visiting. |
| Request miscellaneous original documents | Less common document requests handled at the counter for paperwork outside the standard categories. |
| NOT at this office: Self Service Terminals | No on-site kiosk. For kiosk transactions, use Tulare’s office kiosk (274 E Cross Avenue, office hours) or the grocery kiosks in Tulare, Dinuba, Reedley and Hanford (section 6) — open daily, including weekends when every field office is closed. |
Payment is the same statewide line printed on dmv.ca.gov office pages: the DMV accepts cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order at field offices. The statewide phone line for everything is 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). No office-specific phone number is published for Visalia — any “direct Visalia DMV number” from a directory is unverified, so use the statewide line. This page deliberately prints no fee dollar amounts: fee line items change and are gated until re-verified on dmv.ca.gov at build time, and the one figure that is safe to state is that booking itself is free.
One more scope rule before you book, because it saves more trips than any other paragraph on this page: routine services get no counter service at all. Simple registration renewals, eligible license and ID renewals, record copies, and replacement licenses are routed by the DMV to online, kiosk, mail, or phone options — the counter will not do them. Before driving to East Main Street, check whether your task is actually an office task. If it is a registration renewal or a record copy, a Tulare grocery kiosk (Foods Co, open 6:00 AM–1:00 AM daily) or Tulare’s office kiosk probably beats a weekday office visit. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the kiosk cannot do it — book the office.
3Booking an appointment here
Booking happens only on the DMV’s official scheduler, and it is free. Here is the play for a Visalia visit:
- Go to the official DMV appointment scheduler (“Schedule an Appointment” on dmv.ca.gov).
- Choose your appointment type FIRST. This is the highest-value sentence in this section: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types in the official scheduler, with separate queues. Booking the wrong type means rebooking. Pick “office visit” for licenses, ID, registration, and most counter services; pick “drive test” for the road test.
- Search by ZIP (93292) or “Visalia” and pick the East Main Street office — not a partner address and not a kiosk address, neither of which takes appointments. Watch the address: the office is 1711 East Main Street, not Tulare’s 274 E Cross Avenue (a different city, a different office) and not any partner storefront on Mooney Boulevard or Court Street.
- Pick a date and time. Morning slots move fastest. If Visalia shows nothing on your date, widen the same search BY TASK (section 4): Tulare for the closest kiosk + full services; Porterville, Hanford, or Delano for kiosk + full services; Reedley or Shafter for counter services without a kiosk — offices serve all California residents regardless of home address, and cancellations open slots when you check back.
- Enter your contact details and confirm. Save the confirmation — you will need it if anything changes.
Prefer the phone? Call 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). If you are heading to the office without an appointment, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option, and bring everything on our documents checklist so you do not burn a second trip. Walk-ins are accepted subject to capacity, but an appointment beats a walk-in at any hour. More on the whole booking process in our California DMV appointment guide and our DMV wait times guide. This page prints no wait-time minutes: the live wait display on dmv.ca.gov changes hourly, and any snapshot quoted here would go stale within the hour — check the live display on the morning of your visit instead.
4Nearby DMV offices: kiosk task or counter task first, then direction
Every Tulare County resident’s in-person option is one of the offices below. All of them run the same weekly pattern (Monday–Tuesday 8–5, Wednesday 9–5, Thursday–Friday 8–5, Saturday–Sunday closed) and the same six payment methods, and all appear on dmv.ca.gov’s own pages or nearby lists, re-verified October 26, 2026. The decision is NOT purely distance — dmv.ca.gov prints no distances, and third-party mileage figures for these towns conflict with each other, so this page prints none. The decision is task first: kiosk task or counter task? That kiosk column is the most important column on this page.
| Office | Address & kiosk | Services — the deciding factor |
|---|---|---|
| Visalia (this office) | 1711 East Main Street, Visalia, CA 93292 — no kiosk on site | 8 counter services incl. Testing. The county-seat default for counter tasks; NOT a kiosk stop. |
| Tulare | 274 E Cross Avenue, Tulare, CA 93274 — kiosk on site | Full 9 services, Visalia’s 8 + Self Service Terminals. The closest office that CAN do a kiosk transaction — the first fallback for any kiosk task. |
| Porterville | 329 E Olive Avenue, Porterville, CA 93257 — kiosk on site | Full 9 services, same as Tulare. The southeast fallback. |
| Hanford | 701 W Hanford Armona Road (corner of W Armona), Hanford, CA 93230 — kiosk on site | Full 9 services, same as Tulare. The west fallback, in Kings County. |
| Delano | 631 Jefferson Street, Delano, CA 93215 — kiosk on site | Full 9 services, same as Tulare. The south fallback, in Kern County. |
| Reedley | 1890 E Dinuba Avenue, Reedley, CA 93654 — no kiosk on site | 8 counter services, same as Visalia. The north fallback — and the address to trust: older directories list an old Reedley address (558 E Dinuba Ave), which is stale; dmv.ca.gov’s current address is 1890 E Dinuba Avenue. Its Save Mart grocery kiosk (1580 E. Manning Ave., daily 6 AM–12 AM) does the kiosk work instead. |
| Shafter | 548 Walker Street, Shafter, CA 93263 — no kiosk on site | Counter-services fallback south of Delano; no kiosk. |
Three disambiguations save real trips. First, the Visalia/Tulare pair: they look like two branches of the same county system and they are not interchangeable for kiosk tasks. Visalia does people and vehicles at the counter but has no kiosk; Tulare does the same counter work plus a kiosk. If your task is a registration renewal at a machine, Tulare can help and Visalia cannot. If your task is a REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test, both can help — pick whichever shows an appointment first. Second, Reedley: it is the best full-counter fallback north of Visalia, and its address is the one most directories get wrong — print 1890 E Dinuba Avenue, never the stale 558 E Dinuba Avenue from old replacement-project documents. Third, the cities that look like offices but are not: Dinuba, Farmersville, Exeter, Lindsay, Woodlake, Corcoran and Lemoore have no DMV field office of their own listed on dmv.ca.gov — their dmv.ca.gov presence is kiosks and partners, not field offices. Dinuba has the Superior Grocers grocery kiosk (2150 E. El Monte Way, daily 7 AM–10 PM) and partners; Farmersville has El Valle Insurance (640 N Farmersville Blvd). If a directory gives you a “Dinuba DMV office” or “Exeter DMV office” street address, treat it as unverified directory data, not an official office — residents of those towns use Visalia (or Reedley, Tulare, or Porterville) for counter services. And one list to handle with care: where dmv.ca.gov shows a partner row as “closed all week,” that is a data anomaly for a listed partner, not real hours — the partners section below prints such partners with name, address and phone only, never with all-week-closed hours.
5Frequently asked questions
Visalia: the straight answers to the questions Tulare County residents actually ask — answered from official sources, verified October 26, 2026.
What are the Visalia DMV’s hours?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Wednesday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (opens one hour late); closed Saturday and Sunday. State holidays can change hours — confirm on the official office page before you go. No field office lists Saturday hours, so be skeptical of any directory that claims a Saturday opening for Visalia — and of any listing that shows Visalia as closed all week, which is a dmv.ca.gov data anomaly on one kiosk page’s nearby list, not real hours.
Is the Visalia DMV open on Saturday or Sunday?
No — the field office is closed both days. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, the grocery kiosks run daily instead: Foods Co in Tulare (1210 E. Prosperity Ave.) is open Monday–Sunday 6:00 AM–1:00 AM, Superior Grocers in Tulare (115 S. West St.) runs to 10:00 PM daily (10:30 PM Thursdays), Superior Grocers in Dinuba (2150 E. El Monte Way) runs 7:00 AM–10:00 PM daily, and Save Mart in Reedley (1580 E. Manning Ave.) runs 6:00 AM–12:00 AM daily. REAL ID, licenses, and drive tests need an office on a weekday.
What is the Visalia DMV address?
1711 East Main Street, Visalia, CA 93292, in Tulare County — Visalia is the county seat. Do not confuse it with Tulare’s office at 274 E Cross Avenue, Tulare, CA 93274 (a different city, a different office — and the one with the kiosk), or with any partner storefront on Mooney Boulevard or Court Street. The official office page is dmv.ca.gov/portal/field-office/visalia/.
What is the phone number for the Visalia DMV?
Use the DMV’s statewide line: 1-800-777-0133 (automated 24/7; live representatives Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). The Visalia office listings publish no office-specific number, and no 559 ‘direct Visalia DMV number’ from a directory is verified — use the statewide line.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Book first. Appointments are free on the official DMV scheduler, and an appointment beats a walk-in at any hour. If you go without one, check the official office page on the morning of your visit for the current same-day check-in option, and bring everything on our documents checklist so you do not burn a second trip. Remember the booking-type rule: a field-office visit and a behind-the-wheel drive test are separate appointment types — booking the wrong type means rebooking.
What services does the Visalia DMV offer — does it do driving tests?
Eight counter services on the DMV’s list: Licensing Services, Testing, Title Transfers, Registration, Plates/Permits/Placards, Replace Lost/Stolen/Damaged, Records, and miscellaneous original documents — and NO Self Service Terminals. Yes — ‘Testing’ is on the list, so behind-the-wheel drive tests are booked here as a separate appointment type. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for this office on its official listings, so check the scheduler rather than assuming it. See the drive-test section for the test-day checklist.
Does the Visalia DMV have a self-service kiosk, and where is the nearest kiosk?
No — unlike Tulare, Porterville, Hanford and Delano (all with kiosks on site), Visalia’s office has no self-service kiosk, and no grocery kiosk in Visalia proper surfaced on dmv.ca.gov’s lists in this check. The nearest kiosks are Tulare’s office kiosk (274 E Cross Avenue, office hours) and the grocery kiosks in Tulare (Superior Grocers, Foods Co), Dinuba (Superior Grocers), Reedley (Save Mart) and Hanford (Foods Co) — see section 6. Kiosks handle registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records. They do NOT issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses. More in our DMV kiosk guide.
What should I bring for a REAL ID, licence, or registration visit?
For a first REAL ID: one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency — originals or certified copies, never photocopies. If your legal name has changed, bring name-change documentation too. Start the application online first for a confirmation code. For registration and title visits: your current registration card, the signed title or transfer paperwork, and smog documentation if applicable; out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office. Run through our DMV documents checklist the night before — it is the difference between one trip and two.
Wasn’t the Visalia DMV closed for renovations — is it open now?
It was closed, and now it is open. The office closed on December 26 for upgrades and reopened to the public at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, per the DMV’s press release of April 8, 2026. Some AI-written guides still say the Visalia office is ‘currently undergoing renovations until March 2026’ — that line is stale. If a guide you are reading still calls Visalia closed or renovating, stop trusting that guide for hours.
If the Visalia DMV is fully booked, which nearby office should I try instead?
It depends on your TASK — and this is the most important answer on the page. For the closest kiosk + full services: Tulare (274 E Cross Avenue) — nine services including the kiosk. For kiosk + full services further out: Porterville (329 E Olive Avenue), Hanford (701 W Hanford Armona Road), or Delano (631 Jefferson Street) — all nine services, all with kiosks. For counter services without a kiosk: Reedley (1890 E Dinuba Avenue — not the stale 558 address) or Shafter (548 Walker Street). Pick by task first, then by direction of travel — never by an invented wait-time ranking, and never by a mileage figure, since third-party mileages for these towns conflict with each other.
Can I renew my vehicle registration at a kiosk or a DMV business partner instead of going to the Visalia office?
Often yes, for the right task. The kiosk cluster in section 6 (Tulare, Dinuba, Reedley, Hanford grocery kiosks + the Tulare, Porterville, Hanford and Delano office kiosks) handles registration renewals, planned non-operation, and driver/vehicle records with no appointment. DMV business partners in Visalia — Visalia Auto Insurance Services (518 N Court St Ste A, phone 1-559-741-9144 — note: dmv.ca.gov does not list hours for this partner, so call before visiting), Chavez Insurance Services (2530 S Mooney Blvd, phone 1-559-891-2900, Mon–Sat 10am–6pm), and AAA Visalia Branch (4228 S Mooney Blvd, phone 1-559-732-8045, members only, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–1pm) — handle registration-type work for an additional fee. But kiosks and partners cannot issue REAL IDs, run drive or knowledge tests, or issue first-time licenses — those need the East Main Street office.
How do I get to the Visalia DMV by bus, and is there parking information available?
By transit: the City of Visalia’s own bus system, Visalia Transit, serves Visalia, Farmersville, Goshen and Exeter, with most routes connecting at the Visalia Transit Center near downtown; the Tulare–Visalia Express (11X), jointly operated with the Tulare County Regional Transit Agency, connects Tulare Transit Center and Visalia Transit Center via SR 99 / SR 198 / Mooney Blvd, and county routes run to Dinuba, Porterville, Lindsay and beyond. Use the Visalia Transit / TCRTA trip planner and check the stop for 1711 East Main Street before you travel — no source verifies a specific stop’s walking distance to the office, and no route is asserted to stop at the office door. On parking, this page makes no current claim: no official source describes the office’s lot, capacity, or street parking today. The only parking-related fact here is history — part of the lot was resurfaced during the December 2025–April 2026 closure, per the DMV press release — not a description of parking now. Arrive early and allow time to park.
Kiosks: no machine at Visalia — the Tulare County cluster that does the job
Visalia is the exception in its own county cluster: the office itself has no kiosk, and no grocery kiosk in Visalia proper surfaced on dmv.ca.gov’s lists in this check. The good news is that the cluster around it is strong — four office kiosks and five grocery kiosks, all on dmv.ca.gov’s lists, all within the county and its immediate neighbours. Office kiosks follow office hours (Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 8–5, Wednesday 9–5, weekends closed); grocery kiosks follow store hours, including weekends and late nights when every field office is closed. Kiosk hours follow the host store’s hours, so confirm on dmv.ca.gov before a late-night trip.
| Kiosk | Hours | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tulare field office (on site) 274 E Cross Avenue, Tulare, CA 93274 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed | The closest kiosk to Visalia — use it when you need a machine and an office in the same trip |
| Porterville field office (on site) 329 E Olive Avenue, Porterville, CA 93257 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed | Southeast fallback with a kiosk |
| Hanford field office (on site) 701 W Hanford Armona Road, Hanford, CA 93230 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed | West fallback with a kiosk; its Foods Co grocery kiosk (1850 W. Lacey Blvd., daily 6 AM–1 AM) runs nights and weekends |
| Delano field office (on site) 631 Jefferson Street, Delano, CA 93215 | Office hours: Mon–Tue/Thu–Fri 8–5, Wed 9–5, Sat–Sun closed | South fallback with a kiosk |
| Superior Grocers in Tulare 115 S. West St., Tulare, CA 93274 | Mon–Wed 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Thu 7:00 AM – 10:30 PM; Fri–Sun 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM | The Tulare grocery kiosk with the Thursday late close — note the Thursday 10:30 PM quirk |
| Foods Co in Tulare 1210 E. Prosperity Ave., Tulare, CA 93274 | Mon–Sun 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM | The late-night Tulare option — open weekends when every office is closed |
| Superior Grocers in Dinuba 2150 E. El Monte Way, Dinuba, CA 93618 | Mon–Sun 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM | Dinuba has no field office — this kiosk is its DMV presence, with Visalia and Reedley as its offices |
| Save Mart in Reedley 1580 E. Manning Ave., Reedley, CA 93654 | Mon–Sun 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM | Reedley has no on-site office kiosk either — this grocery kiosk does its kiosk work; midnight close, not 24-hour |
| Foods Co in Hanford 1850 W. Lacey Blvd., Hanford, CA 93230 | Mon–Sun 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM | The Hanford late-night option |
What kiosks do, per dmv.ca.gov: they are “self-serve stations where you can complete certain registration services and request driver or vehicle records,” and “the range of services varies by kiosk location.” Registration renewals and planned non-operation filings are the classic kiosk wins: no appointment, no line, and you print your registration card and sticker on the spot. What kiosks cannot do: no appointments, no knowledge or drive tests, no REAL ID issuance, no new licenses. The decision rule is simple — if the task is a renewal or a record copy, use a grocery kiosk; if the task involves you (license, permit, test, REAL ID), book the East Main Street office. More in our DMV kiosk guide. And remember the office-side version of the same rule: routine services that can go online, to a kiosk, or by mail get no counter service at the field office at all, so do not drive to the office for a task the kiosk already covers. One caution about reading dmv.ca.gov’s own lists: the “Kiosk Available” badge is applied inconsistently to grocery locations (Foods Co Tulare is plainly a kiosk listing but does not always carry the badge, while Superior Grocers does) — the listing type (“DMV Kiosk”) is the reliable signal for grocery kiosks. For field offices, by contrast, the badge is consistent and matches the services lists, which is why the Visalia no-kiosk verdict is safe.
DMV partners near Visalia: registration help for an extra fee
DMV business partners are private businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services — not DMV offices, and not a substitute for one. The official wording is worth quoting: partners handle registration services “often with much shorter wait times (if any!)” and “additional fees may be applied by this partner.” Ask the price before handing over paperwork.
Visalia Auto Insurance Services at 518 N Court St Ste A, Visalia, CA 93291 (phone 1-559-741-9144, the dmv.ca.gov number) is the partner in Visalia city limits found in this check — but dmv.ca.gov does not list hours for this partner, so this page prints its name, address, and phone only and no hours for it. Call before going. A third-party directory gives a different address for the same business name with its own hours — that record is ignored here, because the dmv.ca.gov address and phone are the authorised-partner record and its hours are simply not published by the DMV. Chavez Insurance Services at 2530 S Mooney Blvd, Visalia, CA 93277 (phone 1-559-891-2900, Mon–Sat 10am–6pm, Sun closed) and the AAA Visalia Branch at 4228 S Mooney Blvd, Visalia, CA 93277 (phone 1-559-732-8045, members only, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–1pm, Sun closed) complete the Visalia partner set. Nearby, not in Visalia: El Valle Insurance And Tax Services in Farmersville (640 N Farmersville Blvd, Farmersville, CA 93223, phone 1-559-747-0745, Mon–Sat 10am–6pm, Sun closed) and the Tulare partners — Latino Taxx (565 West Bradsley Ave, Tulare, phone 1-559-334-3630, Mon 9:30am–5pm, Tue–Fri 10am–5pm, Sat 10am–2pm), SUNNYSIDE BUSINESS CENTER – TULARE (509 W Bardsley Ave, Tulare, phone 1-559-329-5404, Mon–Fri 9am–6pm, Sat 10am–2pm), and CASA MARES INSURANCE AGENCY LLC (1600 S K Street, Tulare, phone 1-559-670-9421, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–2pm). Note the Bradsley/Bardsley spelling difference between the two Tulare listings exactly as dmv.ca.gov prints them — reproduced here, not harmonised by guesswork — and note that the Sunnyside branch in Ivanhoe (a different town, a different Sunnyside) is deliberately not printed here, because dmv.ca.gov’s own snapshots conflict on its hours and its own page shows no hours block: address + phone only would be the safe form, and this guide omits it rather than risk a wrong hours line. The pattern for partners everywhere is the same: partners = vehicle paperwork; the field office = everything involving you (licenses, permits, tests, REAL ID). Match your task to the right counter before you go, and never pay a partner a “booking fee” for an office appointment — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free. Note also what is NOT printed here as a partner: commercial registration services with no dmv.ca.gov partner page in this check are not presented as DMV partners.
Drive tests at Visalia: what to expect
Visalia’s drive-test story starts with the booking warning from section 3, because it is where the most rebooking happens: a behind-the-wheel test is a separate appointment type from a general office visit. Book “drive test” for the road test, not a general visit. The office lists “Testing” among its official services, so tests happen here — but this page asserts no examiner route. No verified turn-by-turn route text exists for Visalia, and practice loops on third-party sites are someone’s guess, not the examiner’s plan. Do not buy a “guaranteed Visalia route” from anyone. What you can prepare for is the standard California examiner skill set, from the California Driver Handbook and our driving test appointment guide: left and right turns, stops at intersections, lane changes with mirror and blind-spot checks, straight-line reversing, curbside parking, traffic checks, and space management. The places test-takers most often lose points are residential segments — parked cars, cross-street traffic, pedestrians — not wide arterials, and the classic point-losers everywhere in California are missed mirror and blind-spot checks before lane changes, rolling stops, following too closely, speed mismatched to conditions (not just the posted limit), and pedestrian-awareness failures at crosswalks.
Test-day checklist (standard statewide): your instruction permit (or existing license); a licensed driver to accompany you; the test vehicle’s current registration and proof of insurance; and a car that passes the examiner’s pre-drive check — brakes (foot and parking), horn, turn signals front and back, brake lights, tires, unobstructed windshield, working doors and windows, a driver-side window that rolls down, seat belts, two mirrors, two plates with current registration, defroster, hazard lights, headlights, and wipers. The examiner will ask you to locate and demonstrate controls (window, wipers, signals, brake lights, horn, parking brake, defroster, hazards, headlights) and arm signals. After a failed test, a waiting period applies before retesting and attempts are limited — the scheduler shows when you can rebook, and this page prints no specific wait or attempt numbers without a Handbook citation. One scope note that matters for families: drive tests happen at the field office only — not at a kiosk, not at a partner, not online. And the service-trap note, stated once plainly: Reedley and Shafter do offer Testing as counter services, but they have no kiosk — so a “kiosk renewal” booked at Reedley or Shafter is an impossible task, just as a “drive test” at a kiosk address is. Motorcycle skills-test availability is not itemized for Visalia on its official listings, so check the scheduler.
Transit, parking & getting there
Honest framing first: the office sits on East Main Street in Visalia, and driving is how most visitors arrive — but Visalia has its own city bus system and a county transit network, so the bus is a real option if you plan it. Visalia Transit, the City of Visalia’s bus system (formerly Visalia City Coach, established 1981 and rebranded in 2010), serves Visalia, Farmersville, Goshen and Exeter, with most fixed routes connecting at the Visalia Transit Center near downtown Visalia — including the Mooney, Caldwell/Court, Tulare, Walnut, Murray, Ferguson, Northeast, Exeter–Farmersville, Mooney Orchard, Goshen–Mineral King, Demaree and Plaza services, plus Dial-A-Ride paratransit. The Tulare–Visalia Express (11X), jointly operated by Visalia Transit and the Tulare County Regional Transit Agency, connects Tulare Transit Center and Visalia Transit Center via SR 99, SR 198 and the Mooney Blvd corridor, and county routes run from Visalia to Dinuba (North County), through Ivanhoe and Woodlake (Northeast County), and to Porterville via Tulare, Lindsay and Strathmore (Southeast County). Even so, this page prints no “get off at this stop, walk this many minutes” instruction, because no source confirms which stop is closest to 1711 East Main Street — and no route is asserted to stop at the office door. The wording that is safe, and the wording to use, is: use the Visalia Transit / TCRTA trip planner and check the stop for 1711 East Main Street before you travel. Route numbers, frequencies, and stop locations change with service updates, and no timetable, frequency, or first/last-bus time is printed here for any route. Visalia’s downtown Towne Trolley and the Sequoia Shuttle are visitor services, not DMV access routes, and are not presented as such here.
On parking, this page makes no current claim at all — deliberately. No official or credible source describes the Visalia office’s lot today, its capacity, its street parking, or its accessibility spaces, so this page does not assert “free parking,” a “large lot,” or any parking-difficulty claim. The only parking-related fact on the page is history: part of the lot was resurfaced during the December 2025–April 2026 closure, per the DMV’s April 2026 press release. The only safe advice is generic: arrive early and allow time to park, and remember that an appointment moves you through far faster than the walk-in line regardless of lot conditions. If traffic on SR 99 or SR 198 is your concern — and in the Central Valley it should be — the Foods Co Tulare kiosk (open daily 6:00 AM–1:00 AM) is the real answer for anything it covers: it is open weekends when every office is closed, and traffic-proof.
What to bring
Missing paperwork is the most expensive mistake at a busy office — it turns one visit into two. The rules are the same here as everywhere in California:
- Originals only. The DMV accepts original documents or certified copies — never photocopies.
- REAL ID visits: one proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency. Start the application online first to get a confirmation code. If your legal name has changed, bring name-change documentation.
- Registration and title visits: your current registration card, the signed title or transfer paperwork, and smog documentation if applicable. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (REG 31) at the office.
- Partner visits: ask the fee first, and bring the registration paperwork the partner needs — partners handle registration-type work only.
- Drive tests: the car’s valid registration and proof of insurance, your permit, and your licensed accompanying driver.
Run through our DMV documents checklist the night before — it is the difference between one trip and two. And the night-before check that costs nothing: confirm the office’s hours on its dmv.ca.gov page, especially on Wednesdays (9:00 AM opening) and around state holidays. And one more night-before check that is specific to this office: if your task is a kiosk task, confirm it is not on the office-visit list at all — the Visalia office has no kiosk, so a kiosk task planned for East Main Street is a wasted trip before you leave home.
Best and worst times to visit
- Best: an appointment at any hour beats a walk-in at the “best” hour. Within the week, arriving at the 8:00 AM opening is the calmest window.
- Good: mid-afternoon (around 2:00–3:30 PM) on Tuesday–Thursday, after the lunch rush clears. Do not cut it close to the end of the day if you need a knowledge test.
- Worst: Mondays and Fridays, the first and last days of the month, and days right after a holiday — the standard DMV peak pattern.
- Wednesday quirk: the office opens at 9:00 AM, not 8:00 — do not show up at 8:00 expecting the early-bird advantage.
- When Visalia is full: check Tulare in the same search for the closest kiosk + full services (Porterville, Hanford, or Delano for kiosk + full services further out; Reedley or Shafter for counter services without a kiosk) — and check back for cancellations. If your task is a renewal or a record copy, the Foods Co Tulare kiosk (6:00 AM–1:00 AM daily) beats any office queue.
Sources used: dmv.ca.gov (Visalia field office page — address, hours pattern, 8 services, no kiosk badge, payments — plus Tulare, Porterville, Hanford, Delano and Reedley office pages and the Visalia Auto Insurance Services, Chavez, AAA Visalia, El Valle and Tulare partner pages, all read October 26, 2026; official appointment scheduler; official kiosk description; REAL ID documents page; DMV press release “Visalia DMV Office Reopens April 14,” April 8, 2026), U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts for Visalia (2020 census population 141,384), Visalia Transit and Tulare County Regional Transit Agency route records (Visalia Transit Center hub; 11X Tulare–Visalia Express; county routes to Dinuba, Porterville, Lindsay and Woodlake). No fee dollar amounts, wait-time minutes, review numbers, current parking descriptions, drive-test routes, motorcycle-testing claims, or “miles from the office” figures appear on this page, because no official source verified them on build day.
Ready to book?
Booking happens on the DMV’s official scheduler — it’s free. Book the East Main Street office for Visalia and Tulare County counter visits — and remember to pick “drive test” (not a general visit) if you are booking a road test, to check the services list before driving to Tulare for a kiosk task (Visalia itself has none), and to use a Tulare, Dinuba, Reedley or Hanford grocery kiosk for renewals and records. Bring our document checklist so you walk in prepared, and double-check the holiday schedule before you go.
