Susanville DMV Office: Hours, Services & Appointment Guide

The only DMV field office in Lassen County — the county-seat office on Main Street, open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only, with behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written tests, and REAL ID, at 4,186 feet in the high desert. It has no kiosk, and there is no CDL test here. But check the days before you drive: this office is closed Tuesday and Thursday, closed Saturday and Sunday, and the Nevada DMV in Reno cannot do California business. TL;DR

  • Address: 2615 Main Street, Susanville, CA 96130 — on Main Street in the county seat, at the junction of State Routes 36 and 139, about 5 miles from US 395. One moving site lists the wrong address, 2950 Riverside Drive — that is not the DMV; the correct address is 2615 Main Street.
  • Hours: Monday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, every week. This is a reduced-days office: the DMV moved Susanville to a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule on July 1, 2024, and it has stayed that way since.
  • This week: in the week of November 9–13, 2026, the office is open Monday, November 9 and Friday, November 13 only — and closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day, a state holiday when every California DMV field office is closed. Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 12 are closed too, because this office never opens on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Susanville.
  • Appointments: recommended for faster service; behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Same-day check-in (Get in Line) runs 7:50 am–4:00 pm on the office’s open days, Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm — and it does not run at all on Tuesdays or Thursdays, because the office is closed.
  • Kiosk here: no — this office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside, and no retail kiosk in Susanville or Lassen County was verified. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Chico field office, about 78.6 miles away in a straight line. A renewal trip here still works online, by mail, or through a partner — not at a kiosk.
  • No CDL test here: Susanville does not offer CDL road tests. Neither does Quincy, Alturas, Chico, or Red Bluff. The nearest CDL test site is the Redding field office (2135 Civic Center Dr, Redding), about 92.2 miles away in a straight line.
  • The county picture: Lassen County has ONE DMV field office, not two and not three — Susanville (2615 Main St, county seat, Mon/Wed/Fri, no kiosk). Westwood, Janesville, Herlong, Doyle, Bieber, Madeline, Standish, Ravendale, Termo, Milford, Litchfield, Spaulding, and Eagle Lake have no DMV office at all; the DMV’s office pages for all thirteen towns return a 404. Every Lassen County resident funnels through this one counter.
  • The Tuesday/Thursday interlock: Susanville is closed Tuesdays and Thursdays, and so is every other office in Lassen County — because there is no other office in Lassen County. The nearest open office on a Tuesday or Thursday is Quincy (1953 E Main St), 35.9 miles away in a straight line, open Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 am–12:00 pm and 1:15–5:00 pm with a lunch closure in between. Susanville and Quincy never share an open day.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses get no counter service — use dmv.ca.gov online services, a partner, or mail. There is no kiosk in this building to fall back on, so the online and partner channels matter more here than in a kiosk office.
  • Tests here: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle skills test, and the written knowledge test. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California.
  • Saturday option: the DMV office is closed on Saturdays, and there is no AAA branch in Susanville. The nearest Saturday option for California registration-type services is the AAA Chico Branch (2009 Forest Ave Ste 10, Chico), open Saturdays 9:00 am–4:30 pm for members only. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.
  • State line: the Nevada DMV in Reno (9155 Double Diamond Parkway, about 81 miles away in a straight line) is a different state’s agency — it cannot do California licenses or registration, and this office cannot do Nevada business. Do not follow listings that send you to a “Double R Blvd” Reno address; that address is wrong.

2615 Main Street, Susanville, CA 96130
Lassen County’s only DMV office — county-seat office (Mon/Wed/Fri) with drive tests and REAL ID, no kiosk, no CDL test

1The county-seat office — one DMV for the whole county

If you live in Lassen County, this is your DMV office — and it is the only one, in the county seat, at 4,186 feet above sea level on the Susan River, which is the first thing this page has to tell you, because the rest of the county has nothing else. The field office at 2615 Main Street is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only — Monday and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm — and it handles the counter range the DMV lists for a field office: licensing, testing, title transfers, registration, plates, permits and placards, replacements, and records — eight service groups, one fewer than a kiosk office, because there is no self-service terminal here. Susanville is the only incorporated city in Lassen County and the county seat — 16,728 people at the 2020 census, down from 17,947 in 2010 — in a county of 32,730 people, and it sits at the junction of State Routes 36 and 139, about 5 miles from US 395, in the high desert of northeastern California. The DMV office sits on Main Street, the town’s main commercial street, and that is exactly why it carries the traffic it does: every Lassen County resident, the prison staff and their families from the facilities east of town, and the new residents who move across the state line from Nevada.

But the most important paragraph on this page is a verification, and it is the reason this page exists in its present form. The build note for this office asked whether Susanville is also the “nearest office” answer for its whole county. That angle is verified here, and the page may claim it — with the proof attached. Lassen County has one DMV field office, not two: Susanville. The DMV’s field-office pages for every other Lassen County town return a 404 — Westwood, Janesville, Herlong, Doyle, Bieber, Madeline, Standish, Ravendale, Termo, Milford, Litchfield, Spaulding, and Eagle Lake all 404, checked on dmv.ca.gov on November 5, 2026 — so there is no office hiding in a county town and no part-time Tuesday/Thursday office anywhere in the county. Susanville is also the county seat and the county’s only incorporated city, so the honest county picture is a one-office county: every Lassen County town funnels through this one counter — Westwood, Janesville, Herlong, Doyle, Bieber, Standish, Milford, and the rest. Any California DMV office serves any Californian — you are not tied to the one nearest your address — so the honest question is never “which office is mine” but “which office has what I need, on the day I can go.” That question is the subject of sections 9 and 10.

The second most important paragraph is about the trips you do not need to make. The DMV’s own appointments page states that the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions “must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” In Susanville that list bites harder than it does in a kiosk office, because Susanville has no kiosk to send you to: for a renewal or a record, the answer is dmv.ca.gov, a partner, or mail — not a wait in the counter line, and not a kiosk in this building. And it bites harder still because the nearest verified kiosk is the Chico field office, about 78.6 miles away in a straight line: if you drive in from Westwood or Herlong for a renewal that has no counter service, you have driven a high-desert highway for nothing. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, do not book a counter appointment at all; do it online or through a partner. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the office is the place — book it, and bring the documents in section 11.

Two more identity facts before you go anywhere. First, this office is in Susanville, California, in Lassen County — not in Nevada, and not on the Reno side of the state line. The Nevada DMV in Reno is a different state’s agency, and it cannot do California business; this office cannot do Nevada business either. Second, this page is an independent guide, not the DMV. We cannot book for you, we cannot see live slot availability, and we never charge for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below — address, hours, services, payments, nearby offices, tests, kiosk, transit — was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on November 5, 2026, and cross-checked against a second source. Where a fact could not be verified, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no wait-time minutes, no review numbers, no fee amounts, no parking description, and no test route appear anywhere below.

2Address — Main Street, in the county seat, at the junction of two highways

The Susanville DMV office is at 2615 Main Street, Susanville, CA 96130. That address is confirmed three ways: the DMV’s own office page, which spells it “2615 Main Street”; the DMV’s own place data, which gives the coordinates 40.41248, −120.63769; and the independent dmvca.info location page, which gives “2615 Main St, Susanville, CA 96130.” The DMV’s June 3, 2024 press release on the new reduced hours lists the office the same way — “Susanville (2615 Main St.)” — and the DMV’s own office locator lists “Susanville — DMV Field Office, 2615 Main Street, Susanville, CA 96130.” The office sits on Main Street, the town’s main commercial street, at the junction of State Routes 36 and 139, about 5 miles from US 395. Main Street is the street the Lassen Rural Bus runs — section 11 has the bus detail — and the office is on the same street as the town’s shops, the county courthouse, and the city offices, so a DMV errand and a county errand can share one trip into town.

One address warning matters here, because a moving site gets it wrong. One aggregator, movers.com, lists the Susanville DMV as “2950 Riverside Dr, Susanville, CA 96130” — that is not the DMV. The 2950 Riverside Drive area is the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office and child-support office area, not a DMV field office. If a map or a directory sends you to Riverside Drive for a DMV errand, it is wrong; the DMV office is on Main Street, at 2615. The other trap is the wrong agency, not the wrong street. The California Highway Patrol’s Susanville Area office sits at 472-400 Diamond Crest Road, (530) 252-1800, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm — and it ranks first in search results for “Susanville DMV office,” so a searcher can easily drive to the Highway Patrol instead of the DMV. The Highway Patrol is not the DMV and cannot do DMV business. The Social Security office in Susanville is a different federal agency too, and the Lassen County Traffic Court (Hall of Justice, 2610 Riverside Drive, (530) 251-8205) is a court, not the DMV. Check the agency on the door before you queue: DMV business belongs at 2615 Main Street.

Susanville’s place on the map is the rest of the address story. The city is the only incorporated city in Lassen County and the county seat, at 4,186 feet above sea level on the Susan River in the southern part of the county, and it is one of the most remote county seats in California: Reno is about 85 miles by road south on US 395, roughly 90 minutes away, while Chico and Redding are each about two hours away by road. Lassen Volcanic National Park lies west of Susanville on State Route 36, and the town’s economy runs on the prisons east of town — High Desert State Prison, still operating, and the California Correctional Center, deactivated on June 30, 2023 — which employ about half of Susanville’s adult population. None of that changes the DMV errand — but it explains why this one office, in this one town, serves the whole county, plus the new residents who move across the state line from Nevada and need the 20-day and 10-day deadlines in section 11.

3Hours — three days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week

The Susanville DMV office is open Monday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is closed Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays. That is a reduced-days schedule, not the standard full-time pattern: the DMV moved Susanville to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday public hours on July 1, 2024, as one of 20 offices across the state, and the schedule has stayed that way since. The hours are confirmed three ways: the DMV’s June 3, 2024 press release, which lists “Susanville (2615 Main St.)” under “Monday, Wednesday and Friday”; the DMV’s own office page, whose week calendar for November 1–14, 2026 shows Monday November 2 open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday November 3 closed, Wednesday November 4 open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Thursday November 5 closed, and Friday November 6 open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; and the independent dmvca.info location page (verified June 5, 2026, closure checked October 31, 2026), which lists the same three days. The office does not close for lunch on its open days; no lunch closure is listed for Susanville — contrast Quincy and Alturas, which both close for lunch (sections 9 and 10). Do not plan a Tuesday or Thursday visit on the assumption of a standard five-day office — and do not plan a Saturday visit at all.

The week this page publishes in has one closure that matters more than the rest, because it falls mid-week and it is easy to miss. Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day, a California state holiday, and every DMV field office in the state is closed that day — the banner on the DMV’s own Susanville page says so in plain words: “All DMV field offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.” In the week of November 9–13, the office is therefore open Monday, November 9 and Friday, November 13 only. The same applies to the alternatives in section 10: Quincy and Alturas are Tuesday/Thursday offices, so in that week they are open Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 12 — the two days Susanville is always closed — and the Redding field office is closed Wednesday, November 11 as well. If your errand can wait, Friday, November 13 is the better day than Monday, November 9, because Mondays are the busiest day statewide and this office carries the whole county.

Two timing rules sit on top of the hours table, and both are statewide. First, written / knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California, so a permit test or a renewal knowledge test needs a morning or early-afternoon slot even though the office stays open until 5:00 pm. Second, the DMV publishes a live wait-times snapshot for every field office on its current wait-times page — appointment versus no-appointment, updated through the day — but it publishes no average and no minutes, and the independent wait-times tracker lists Susanville with both wait columns blank, so this page prints no wait-time figure for Susanville. Check the live page on the morning you plan to go, and treat the first and last week of the month, and Mondays, as the busiest times: that is the statewide pattern the independent guides report, and it applies with extra force to a one-office county, where there is no second office in the county to spread the load. One more warning about the hours themselves: a search snippet for the DMV’s old office page lists Thursday as a 9:00 am open. That snippet is wrong — the DMV’s own live calendar shows Thursday closed, the June 2024 press release lists Susanville as Monday/Wednesday/Friday only, and the independent location page agrees. Do not trust a search snippet over the DMV’s own calendar.

4Services at this office

The DMV’s Susanville page lists eight service groups, and the list is the whole story of what the counter does. The most useful thing about the list is what is not on it: there is no “Self Service Terminals” line, which is how the DMV’s own page tells you there is no kiosk in this building. Chico, Folsom, Roseville, Carmichael, and Sacramento carry a “Kiosk Available” tag on their pages; Susanville does not. The eight groups are the standard full-service set, and they are the reason this office exists: everything a first-time applicant, a new resident, or a title transfer needs, in the county seat, three days a week.

Three service facts deserve their own sentences because they decide whether your trip is necessary at all. First, REAL ID is offered here — a first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents, and section 7 has the list. Second, CDL road tests are not offered here: Susanville is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither is Quincy, Alturas, Chico, or Red Bluff. The nearest CDL test site is the Redding field office, about 92.2 miles away in a straight line — section 10 has the full picture. Third, the phone is the statewide number only: 1-800-777-0133. No office-direct number is published for Susanville; the DMV’s Susanville page lists no phone number of its own at all. The automated system is available 24 hours a day, and live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Payment at the counter follows the statewide list the DMV prints on every office page: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order. That is the full list for Susanville, verified on the office page itself. Do not bring a payment method outside that list and expect the counter to take it. And one more service boundary: the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail. In Susanville, with no kiosk in the building and the nearest verified kiosk 78.6 miles away in Chico, that means dmv.ca.gov, a partner, or mail — and section 8 works through the options in order.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

An appointment at the Susanville DMV is recommended for faster service but not required for most counter services — the same rule as every California field office. Book online at dmv.ca.gov/portal/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133, choose Susanville as the office, and pick a time. Booking is free; the DMV charges no booking fee, and any site charging one is not the DMV. For driver’s license and ID card transactions, appointment slots only open after you submit the online application first — complete it, then return to book. Bring a printed or on-screen confirmation; appointment holders use a separate, faster line than walk-ins. And remember the calendar before you pick a day: the scheduler will not offer you a Tuesday or a Thursday, because this office is closed on both.

The exception is the one that matters most to test-takers: behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. There is no walk-in drive test at Susanville or anywhere else in California. If you arrive without a drive-test appointment, you will be turned away for that test, and in a one-office county that means a second drive from wherever you came from — Westwood, Janesville, Herlong, or Doyle — on the next open day. Book the drive test first, then plan the drive. The same appointment-only logic applies to any test that needs an examiner’s time; the written knowledge test is the more flexible one, but it still has the 4:30 pm cutoff, so a late-afternoon arrival for a permit test is a wasted trip even with an appointment.

For same-day visits without an appointment, the DMV’s Get in Line system is the way in. It is the same-day electronic check-in: join the queue before you arrive, get a text when your turn approaches, and wait somewhere other than the lobby. Two facts about Get in Line are worth stating plainly, because the internet still gets both wrong. First, Get in Line was never discontinued — it is still live, and the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. Second, the queue opens ten minutes before the office does: 7:50 am to 4:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 8:50 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays, verified on this site’s own live Service Advisor flow on November 4, 2026 — and it does not run on Tuesdays or Thursdays at all, because the office is closed. Appointment holders are still served first, so a walk-in should expect to wait, and should arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. The DMV stops admitting new walk-ins before closing so that everyone already in the queue can be served; do not arrive at 4:45 pm expecting to be seen.

Do not book an appointment for a transaction that has no counter service. Registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses cannot be booked at the counter at all — the scheduler will not offer you a slot for them, because the counter does not do them. Do those online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail. And if you already have an appointment and need to change it, the DMV’s View/Cancel flow asks for your first name, last name, and telephone number — there is no confirmation-number field, and no confirmation number is needed to look an appointment up. That correction, verified live on the DMV’s own flow, is worth knowing before you go hunting through old emails for a number that does not exist.

6Driving tests at Susanville: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — and the CDL gap

Susanville offers three test types, and the table below is the whole of it. Behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests are all available here; CDL road tests are not, and no other office in Lassen County offers them either, because there is no other office in Lassen County. The nearest CDL test site is the Redding field office, and section 10 gives the distance and the address. For the three tests Susanville does offer, the rules are the statewide ones, and they are worth reading before you book, because a failed preparation costs a county-wide drive back on the next open day.

TestAt Susanville?What to know
Behind-the-wheel drive testYesAppointment-only. Bring a licensed driver and a safe, registered vehicle. The pre-drive safety check comes first.
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered at this office; book an appointment. Bring your own motorcycle and helmet.
Written knowledge testYesNot given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California. All questions come from the California Driver Handbook.
CDL road testNot offered at SusanvilleNearest CDL test site is the Redding field office, 2135 Civic Center Dr, Redding — about 92.2 miles away in a straight line. Appointment-only.

The behind-the-wheel test is the one most readers are booking, so it gets the detail. The DMV’s own test-preparation page describes two parts: the pre-drive safety check and the Driving Performance Evaluation. The pre-drive check is the part people fail without ever leaving the parking lot: the examiner checks that the vehicle is safe and legal — lights, signals, horn, brakes, tires, mirrors, seat belts, registration, and insurance — and that you know where the controls are. The on-road portion is a short drive, typically ten to fifteen minutes, on residential and major streets around the office: turning, lane changes, stopping, parking, and safe merging. There is no freeway portion and no parallel parking in California’s test. The DMV publishes no test route for Susanville or any other office, so do not memorise streets from a forum post; prepare for the pre-drive check and the standard skills instead, and practise on the roads around Main Street, State Route 36, and the Susanville neighbourhoods so the high-desert junctions and the highway traffic feel familiar. In winter, practise on snow and ice too: this office sits at 4,186 feet, and a test-day snowstorm changes the drive completely.

Book early, because Susanville carries the whole county. Lassen High School, Credence High School, Diamond Mountain Charter High School, Lassen County Community High School, New Horizons Christian School, and Lassen Christian Academy are the town’s high schools, and Lassen Community College sits on the City Express bus route — so every teen permit and every first drive test in the county funnels through this one office’s appointment book, along with every adult test in Westwood, Janesville, Herlong, and Doyle. If the week you want is full, the alternatives in section 10 are the answer, and Quincy at 35.9 miles in a straight line is the closest one — but Quincy is open Tuesday and Thursday only, so a Susanville reader’s backup test day is a Tuesday or a Thursday, never the same day. One honest fact about preparation belongs here, because no guide says it: no in-person behind-the-wheel driving school was verified in Susanville itself. The driving-school listings for Susanville return no local school at all. What exists for Susanville teens is online drivers education: DriversEdDirect, a DMV-approved online course for Lassen County teens, and DMV Edu, a California DMV-licensed online provider (License E4365) running Susanville drivers-ed courses. The online course covers the 30-hour drivers-education requirement and the permit practice tests; the six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training California requires for teens under 18 still have to be done with a licensed driving school, so check the DMV’s driving-school lookup for the nearest licensed instructor and expect to travel for it — Chico and Redding are the nearest cities with licensed schools, each about two hours away by road. Any school can do the mock test and the first-lesson permit validation; none can book your DMV test for you. Retake rules are not printed here because the DMV’s retake interval is a live rule, not a fixed fact on this page — check dmv.ca.gov before you rebook.

7REAL ID at Susanville

Yes, you can get a REAL ID at the Susanville DMV — and for most readers, this office is the only place in Lassen County to get one. A first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit: it cannot be done online, at a kiosk, or through a partner, and there is no AAA branch in Susanville that could do it anyway. Bring originals, not copies: proof of identity (such as a valid U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate), proof of Social Security number (such as a Social Security card or a W-2), and two proofs of California residency (such as a utility bill, a bank statement, or a rental agreement showing your current address). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit, because a missing document means a second trip — and in a one-office county, a second trip is a second drive from wherever in the county you came from, on the next open day.

REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights and entry to certain federal facilities began May 7, 2025. A standard California license or ID card no longer works for those purposes; a REAL ID, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted document does. If you already hold a REAL ID and are renewing, the renewal may be possible online unless your notice says an in-person visit is required — check the notice, not the habit. If you are upgrading for the first time, book an appointment rather than walking in: the document check takes longer than a simple renewal, and a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip if the queue closes before your turn. The office is open three days a week for this, and the appointment book is the way to be sure of a slot.

One county-shape point belongs in this section, because it is the reason the document list matters more here than in a city with three offices. Susanville is the county’s only DMV field office, and the county’s nearest second office is Quincy, 35.9 miles away in a straight line — open Tuesday and Thursday only, with a lunch closure — or Chico, about 78.6 miles away in a straight line. If your documents are wrong, the nearest place that can fix the problem is still this office, on its next open day. Check the list twice, bring originals, and book the appointment. And do not take the Nevada shortcut: the Nevada DMV in Reno issues Nevada REAL IDs, not California ones, and a Nevada REAL ID does not upgrade a California license.

8No kiosk at Susanville — no AAA branch either — and how to skip the trip

The Susanville field office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside. The DMV’s own Susanville page lists eight services and none of them is “Self Service Terminals,” and no retail kiosk is listed anywhere near Susanville on that page either. That is the whole kiosk answer for this office. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Chico field office (107 Parmac Road, Suite 1, Chico), about 78.6 miles away in a straight line. Butte County has two self-service kiosks in total, and Chico’s field-office kiosk is the nearest verified one to Susanville. A kiosk prints registration stickers and handles renewals and records; it cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test. Statewide, the DMV runs 289 kiosks in retail and DMV locations, and kiosk card payments carry the DMV’s 1.95% service fee — a statewide rule, not a Susanville figure. One kiosk claim is deliberately not printed here: a research pass suggested a DMV Now kiosk in Paradise, about 66 miles away, but the DMV’s own kiosk locations page lists no Paradise location at all, so this page does not name it. Do not drive to Paradise expecting a kiosk on the strength of an aggregator listing.

There is also no AAA branch in Susanville — no Susanville AAA branch appears in AAA’s own branch results, and the DMV’s Susanville page lists no partners at all, which is the contrast with the Sonora page, which lists the AAA Sonora Branch. The nearest AAA branch with DMV services that this brief could verify is the AAA Chico Branch, 2009 Forest Avenue, Suite 10, Chico, CA 95928, about 77.0 miles away in a straight line, with DMV hours Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, for members only — and it is a California branch, so its DMV services are California DMV services, which makes it the Saturday option for Susanville readers. The honest Saturday answer for California registration-type services is: the AAA Chico Branch on Saturday, or use dmv.ca.gov, the Chico kiosk, or mail. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here at all.

One more partner warning, because the internet makes this mistake easy. The DMV lists 5 DMV-authorized partners in Butte County and 1 in Tehama County — county-wide counts for Chico’s and Red Bluff’s counties, not Lassen County lists. This page prints no partner count for Lassen County, because none was verified: no count, no names, no addresses. If a directory lists a specific Susanville registration business as a DMV partner, ask it for the address and check the DMV’s own partner lookup before you pay anyone. Partners can handle registration-type paperwork; they cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test. Those are field-office-only, which in Lassen County means this office.

9Lassen County guide: which town, which office — the one-office county

For every town in Lassen County, the answer to “which DMV do I go to” is the same office, and the table below says so town by town, because a reader in Herlong should not have to guess — and should not drive to Reno for a California errand, or to Chico for a foothill errand, when the county’s own office is the answer. There is no second office to compare against, no part-time office to check first, and no “nearest office” contest to run inside the county. The comparison that matters for a Lassen County reader is Susanville versus the out-of-county alternatives, and the deciding factor is the day: Susanville on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Quincy on Tuesday and Thursday. That comparison is section 10. This section is the county map: one office, three days a week, for every community below.

The state-line readers deserve a sentence here even though they are not Lassen County readers, because they are the readers this office meets first when the wrong DMV is closer. Reno, Nevada sits about 85 miles by road south on US 395, roughly 90 minutes away — closer by road than Chico or Redding, which are each about two hours away. A Reno resident’s Nevada license, Nevada registration, and Nevada REAL ID belong to the Nevada DMV in Reno (9155 Double Diamond Parkway, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, appointment required), about 81 miles away in a straight line. A California resident who works in Reno still does California DMV business at this office. The rule is the address on your license, not the address of your workplace: California business at a California office, Nevada business at a Nevada office, and the two never mix. The full alternatives table, with distances and the CDL and kiosk picture, is section 10.

One more county fact, because it explains the shape of the whole page. Lassen County has 32,730 people at the 2020 census, and it has only one incorporated city — Susanville, the county seat and the largest city. The county’s prisons — High Desert State Prison, still operating about 7 to 8 miles east of town, and the California Correctional Center, deactivated on June 30, 2023 — employ about half of Susanville’s adult population, which is why a small high-desert city carries a county-wide DMV office. The DMV’s own place data puts the Susanville office at 40.41248, −120.63769 — the pin to check before you drive, not the pin of the Nevada DMV across the line, and not the pin of the Highway Patrol on Diamond Crest Road.

10If Susanville is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

Susanville is closed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays — and its appointment book can fill, because one office serves the whole county. When that happens, the alternatives below are the answer, in order of distance. Read the hours column before you drive, and read the winter column too: the closest alternatives are all over high-desert highways, and in a snowstorm the closest office on paper can be the slowest drive in practice. The first alternative is Quincy, 35.9 miles away in a straight line. The nearest kiosk is Chico, about 78.6 miles away in a straight line. The nearest CDL test site is the Redding field office, about 92.2 miles away in a straight line. All distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer, and the high-desert highways make the difference bigger than the numbers suggest — State Route 36 west toward Chester climbs into the mountains, and State Route 139 north toward Alturas crosses open high desert that drifts shut in a storm.

The Tuesday/Thursday interlock is the point of this section, and it is sharper here than on any foothill page. When the Susanville office is closed — a Tuesday, a Thursday, a state holiday, a renovation — the whole of Lassen County has no DMV field office at all that day. The nearest open California office on a Tuesday or Thursday is Quincy, 35.9 miles away in a straight line, open 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:15 to 5:00 pm with a lunch closure in between — so a Tuesday or Thursday trip to Quincy must be timed around the lunch hour, and a morning arrival after 12:00 pm means waiting until 1:15 pm. Alturas is the other Tuesday/Thursday office, about 74.8 miles away in a straight line, with the same lunch pattern. That is why the Veterans Day table in section 3 matters, why the appointment book matters, and why the online and partner channels in section 8 matter: for a renewal or a record, you never need the office at all, and on a closure day, the office cannot help you anyway. Check Caltrans QuickMap before driving to any alternative in winter, carry chains, and if the pass is closed, wait for the next open day rather than driving around the mountains to the next county.

For CDL drivers, the picture is simpler and longer. Susanville does not offer CDL road tests, and neither does Quincy, Alturas, Chico, or Red Bluff — all five are tagged “No CDL test.” The DMV’s Redding field office at 2135 Civic Center Drive is the nearest CDL test site, about 92.2 miles from Susanville in a straight line, and Yuba City is the next one, about 102.6 miles away. Book the CDL test by appointment — CDL skills tests are appointment-only — and do not drive to Redding expecting a walk-in test.

11Best time to visit — what to bring — and getting there without a car

No Susanville-specific wait-time figure is published, and this page prints none. The DMV’s wait-times page is a live snapshot, not an average, and the independent wait-times tracker lists Susanville with both wait columns blank. What the independent guides report is a statewide pattern, and it is labelled as one: early mornings, right at opening, and mid-week afternoons are quietest; the first and last week of the month, plus Mondays, are busiest. That pattern bites harder in a one-office county, where the whole county’s first-of-the-month renewals and Monday appointments land on the same book, and where a three-day office compresses five days of demand into three. If you can choose, pick a Wednesday mid-morning, and avoid the first and last week of the month. If you cannot choose, book the appointment and arrive at opening — the appointment line moves first, and the walk-in queue behind it does not. And if the week you want is full, remember the interlock: Quincy is open the two days Susanville is closed.

New residents get their own paragraph, because the deadlines are the ones the internet reverses — and because the state line makes them bite twice here. If you move to California, vehicle registration is due within 20 days (California Vehicle Code section 4152.5) and a California driver’s license is due within 10 days (Vehicle Code section 12505(c)). The numbers are not interchangeable: twenty days for the car, ten days for the license. A new resident who needs both should book the license visit first, because the ten-day clock is the shorter one, and bring the out-of-state license, proof of identity, proof of residency, and the vehicle’s title and registration. Susanville is the office for that errand for the whole county — and the only office for it in Lassen County — so a new resident in Westwood or Herlong books here, not in a town that has no office. And the reverse move has its own clock: if you move from California to Nevada, Nevada requires a Nevada license within 30 days of becoming a resident — check the Nevada DMV’s own new-resident rules, because this page is a California guide and the Nevada number is Nevada’s to state. Do not mix the two states’ deadlines, and do not mix the two states’ offices.

Getting there without a car is possible on the Lassen Rural Bus. The Susanville City Route runs Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 6:52 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 3:52 pm, with stops on Main Street including Main Street and McDow Street, Main and Gay Streets, and South Fairfield and Main Street — the first City Route bus reaches Main Street and McDow Street at 7:04 am and the last at 6:52 pm, so a morning appointment is reachable by bus and an afternoon one is too, as long as the office is open that day. The Susanville City Express Route runs weekdays 10:37 am to 4:00 pm as a circular route from Lassen Community College, with 19 stops and a roughly 30-minute loop. The West County Route links Susanville and Chester three times a day on weekdays and twice on Saturday, and the South County / Commuter Route links Susanville with Honey Lake and Herlong on weekdays. For schedules and fares, call (530) 252-7433 or check lassentransportation.com — and check the schedule for the day you travel, because the bus does not run on Sundays and the office does not open on Tuesdays or Thursdays, so the two calendars have to agree before you leave home. Drivers have the easier trip in summer and the harder one in winter: Susanville sits at the junction of State Routes 36 and 139, about 5 miles from US 395, and in winter the mountain roads west toward Chester and north toward Alturas can carry chain controls — check Caltrans QuickMap before driving, carry chains, and allow extra time for the high-desert drive to any alternative office.

12Why this office matters: the county’s only DMV, and the errors the internet makes about it

Susanville is the only incorporated city in Lassen County and the county seat, and its DMV office is the only DMV field office in the county — the two facts are the same fact, and they are why this page exists. The city had 16,728 people at the 2020 census and the county had 32,730, and the office serves all of them, plus the prison staff and their families from the facilities east of town, plus the new residents who move across the state line from Nevada. The city sits at 4,186 feet above sea level on the Susan River, at the junction of State Routes 36 and 139, about 5 miles from US 395 — and that geography is not the DMV errand, but it is the reason the office is where it is, why there is no other office in the county, and why the drive to any alternative is a high-desert highway drive.

That is also why the errors about this office matter more than they would for a small-town office. The search results for “Susanville DMV” mislead in six quiet ways. First, the wrong address: one moving site lists the DMV as “2950 Riverside Dr,” which is not the DMV at all. Second, the wrong agency: the Highway Patrol’s Susanville Area office ranks first for the query, and the Social Security office and the Traffic Court both sit in the same town — a reader who follows the wrong pin will queue at the wrong agency. Third, the wrong days: generic guides imply standard Monday-to-Friday hours for every office, and one search snippet even lists Thursday as a 9:00 am open — both are wrong for Susanville, which is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only. Fourth, the Nevada-DMV confusion: a map search for “DMV near Susanville” shows the Nevada DMV in Reno, closer by road than Chico or Redding, and a reader who follows that pin will be turned away for California business — and some listings give Reno’s old “Double R Blvd” address, which is wrong even for Nevada. Fifth, the Saturday assumption: a reader who assumes a county-seat office must open on Saturdays will find a closed door, because Susanville is closed every Saturday and there is no AAA branch in town. Sixth, the “there must be a driving school in town” assumption: no in-person behind-the-wheel driving school was verified in Susanville at all, so a teen who waits for a local school will wait forever — the online courses exist, and the six hours of professional training have to be arranged through the DMV’s driving-school lookup. The fix is boring and it is the whole point of this page: the correct address, 2615 Main Street; the correct days, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; the correct county picture, one office, not two and not three; the correct kiosk answer, no, with Chico as the nearest; the correct Saturday answer, closed, with AAA Chico as the nearest Saturday option; and the correct state-line answer, California business at a California office, Nevada business at a Nevada office. Check the address, check the day, check the state, book before you drive — and if your errand is a renewal, do it online or at the Chico kiosk and do not wait in the counter line at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the Susanville DMV office?

2615 Main Street, Susanville, CA 96130, on Main Street in the county seat, at the junction of State Routes 36 and 139. Do not follow listings that give “2950 Riverside Dr” — that is not the DMV. Do not confuse it with the Highway Patrol office on Diamond Crest Road, the Social Security office, or the Traffic Court on Riverside Drive — all different agencies in the same town.

What are the Susanville DMV hours?

Monday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays — including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day). This is a reduced-days office: the DMV moved Susanville to a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule on July 1, 2024. A search snippet that lists Thursday as a 9:00 am open is wrong — the DMV’s own live calendar shows Thursday closed.

Is the Susanville DMV open on Saturday?

No. The Susanville field office is closed every Saturday and Sunday. There is no AAA branch in Susanville, and the nearest Saturday option for California registration-type services is the AAA Chico Branch (2009 Forest Ave Ste 10, Chico), open Saturdays 9:00 am–4:30 pm for members only. For California registration-type services on a Saturday, use dmv.ca.gov, the Chico kiosk, or mail. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.

Do I need an appointment at the Susanville DMV?

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services; same-day check-in (Get in Line) is available on the office’s open days, with the queue open 7:50 am–4:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays and 8:50 am–4:00 pm on Wednesdays. The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Do not book an appointment for a registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record request, or replacement license — those have no counter service and must be done online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail.

Can I walk into the Susanville DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most services, through Get in Line, the DMV’s same-day electronic check-in — but only on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, because the office is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Expect to wait, because appointment holders are served first. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. Get in Line is still live; the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. This is a statewide pattern; no Susanville-specific wait time is published.

Does the Susanville DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel tests require an appointment, and knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm. It does NOT offer CDL road tests: Susanville is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither Quincy, Alturas, Chico, nor Red Bluff offers one either. The nearest CDL test site is the Redding field office (2135 Civic Center Dr, Redding), about 92.2 miles away in a straight line. No test route is published for this office — the DMV does not publish routes — so prepare for the pre-drive check and the standard skills (turning, lane changes, parking, safe merging) instead of memorizing streets.

Can I get a REAL ID at the Susanville DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit. REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025. Book an appointment — a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip, because the document check takes longer than a simple renewal. There is no AAA branch in Susanville that could do REAL ID, and the Nevada DMV in Reno issues Nevada REAL IDs, not California ones.

Is there a DMV kiosk at the Susanville DMV?

No — the Susanville field office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside, and no retail kiosk in Susanville or Lassen County was verified. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Chico field office (107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico), about 78.6 miles away in a straight line. A kiosk cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test. A research pass suggested a kiosk in Paradise, but the DMV’s own kiosk locations page lists no Paradise location, so this page does not name it.

What is the phone number for the Susanville DMV?

1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Susanville; the DMV’s Susanville page lists no phone number of its own at all. The automated system is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Is the Susanville DMV the only DMV in Lassen County?

Yes. Lassen County has one DMV field office: Susanville (2615 Main St), the county-seat office. Westwood, Janesville, Herlong, Doyle, Bieber, Madeline, Standish, Ravendale, Termo, Milford, Litchfield, Spaulding, and Eagle Lake have no DMV office at all — the DMV’s office pages for all thirteen towns return a 404, checked November 5, 2026. Susanville is also the county’s only incorporated city. Every Lassen County resident funnels through this one counter.

What is the closest DMV to Susanville if this office is closed or booked?

Quincy, 35.9 miles away in a straight line, with the same test types — but it is open Tuesday and Thursday only, 8:00 am–12:00 pm and 1:15–5:00 pm with a lunch closure, so it never shares an open day with Susanville. Alturas is about 74.8 miles away, also Tuesday/Thursday only. Chico is about 78.6 miles away and has the nearest verified kiosk. The Nevada DMV in Reno is about 81 miles away but is a different state’s agency and cannot do California business. Red Bluff is about 86 miles away. The Redding field office is about 92.2 miles away and is the nearest CDL test site. Distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer.

Can I renew my vehicle registration at the Susanville DMV?

You can, but you should not need a counter visit at all: registration renewals have no counter service and are handled online at dmv.ca.gov, at a DMV Now kiosk, with a DMV partner, or by mail. In Susanville there is no kiosk in the office, so use dmv.ca.gov, the Chico field office kiosk, the AAA Chico Branch, or mail. No Lassen County partner count was verified for this page, so check the DMV’s partner lookup before driving to a partner.

Book Before You Drive to Susanville

Susanville is open three days a week, and it is the only DMV office in Lassen County — and its drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in the county. Check the day, check the state line, check the mountain weather, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, use dmv.ca.gov, the Chico kiosk, or a partner instead of waiting in the counter line.
