For most vehicles it’s every 2 years (biennial) — but new cars, transfers, and out-of-state registrations follow different rules.

TL;DR

  • Most California vehicles need a smog check every 2 years (biennial), tied to registration renewal — your DMV renewal notice tells you whether one is due that cycle.
  • A smog check is also required when a vehicle changes ownership (seller provides the certificate) and when an out-of-state vehicle is first registered in California.
  • A smog certificate is valid for 90 days — the vehicle must be registered or the registration renewed within that window.
  • Gasoline, hybrid, and alternative-fuel vehicles 8 model years old or newer skip the biennial test and pay a smog abatement fee on renewal instead.
  • Diesels 1998 and newer get no 8-year exemption — they’re tested biennially from the start.

When is your next smog check due?

Answer two questions to estimate your smog check interval — based on the official model-year rules. People ask this in lots of ways — “how often smog check California,” “California smog check how often,” “California smog check every 2 years,” “California smog check frequency,” and “California smog check interval” — and the answer always comes down to the same schedules:

The 4 things that trigger a smog check

🔁 Biennial renewal

The main trigger: every 2 years at registration renewal in enhanced and basic program areas. Your renewal notice will say when a smog certification is required. You can pay your registration fees on time to avoid late penalties — but DMV won’t issue the new registration or year sticker until the electronic smog certification is received.

🔄 Change of ownership

The seller provides a smog certificate when a vehicle is sold. Smog is required on transfer when the vehicle is more than 4 model years old; at 4 or fewer, no smog is needed on transfer (a small smog transfer fee may apply instead). Qualifying family transfers are exempt.

📋 First California registration

Bringing a car in from another state? A California smog test is required before it can be registered — out-of-state smog certificates are not accepted. The 8-year new-car exemption does not apply here. New residents must register within 20 days of establishing residency.

🗺️ Change-of-ownership areas

Some counties and zip codes are designated change-of-ownership areas — there, smog is required only when the vehicle is sold or first registered, not every 2 years. Your renewal notice confirms which program area you’re in.

In practice, a transfer smog check does not reset the biennial schedule. The car’s original two-year cycle keeps running — the ownership-change test is an extra one, not a restart of the clock.

The 8-year new-vehicle exemption

For the first 8 model years, gasoline, hybrid, and alternative-fuel vehicles skip the biennial test entirely. Instead, the owner pays a smog abatement fee added to the registration (the fee amount is shown on your DMV renewal notice).

✅ Who qualifies

Gasoline, hybrid, and alternative-fuel vehicles 8 model years old or newer. The exemption is automatic — nothing to apply for. Once the car passes 8 model years, biennial testing begins.

⚠️ When the exemption doesn’t apply

It does not apply to first-time California registration of an out-of-state vehicle, or to diesel vehicles 1998 and newer — diesels are carved out of the 8-year rule entirely.

How long is a smog certificate good for?

A smog certification is valid for 90 days from the test date. The vehicle must be registered — or the registration renewed — within that 90-day window. Sellers should time the test close to the sale so the certificate is still current when the buyer registers the car.

Diesel: the same cycle, without the 8-year break

🔁 Same biennial cycle

Diesel-powered vehicles model year 1998 and newer (14,000 lbs GVWR or less) need a smog check every 2 years, on ownership change, and at first California registration — the same triggers as gasoline cars.

⚠️ No 8-year exemption

Unlike gas cars, new diesels don’t get the 8-year break — diesel testing begins at the first biennial renewal. Diesel 1997 and older are exempt entirely.

How-often questions, answered

How often do you need a smog check in California?

Every 2 years (biennial) in most areas, tied to your registration renewal. Your DMV renewal notice tells you whether a smog certification is required that cycle.

Does a smog check on transfer reset the biennial schedule?

No. In practice, the original two-year cycle keeps running — the ownership-change test is an extra one, not a restart of the clock.

How long is a California smog check good for?

A smog certification is valid for 90 days from the test date. The vehicle must be registered or the registration renewed within that window.

Do new cars need a smog check in California?

Gasoline cars 8 model years old or newer are exempt from the biennial test — you pay a smog abatement fee on renewal instead. But smog is required when first registering an out-of-state vehicle, and diesels model year 1998 and newer don’t get this exemption.

What if my car is 4 years old and I’m selling it?

Change-of-ownership smog starts at more than 4 model years old. At 4 or fewer model years, no smog is needed on transfer (a small smog transfer fee may apply instead).

Who is responsible for the smog check when selling a car?

The seller must provide the buyer with a valid smog certification (within 90 days) at the time of transfer — except in qualifying family transfers and other exemptions.

Do I need a smog check if I just moved to California?

Yes, before registering your out-of-state vehicle — out-of-state smog certificates are not accepted. New residents must register within 20 days of establishing residency.

Are there areas of California with no biennial smog checks?

Yes. Some counties and zip codes are “change of ownership areas” — smog is required only when the vehicle is sold or first registered in California, not every 2 years. Your renewal notice confirms your program area.

Does a hybrid need a smog check every 2 years?

Yes — hybrids have been subject to smog checks since April 2015 and follow the same biennial cycle and 8-year exemption as gasoline vehicles.

Do motorcycles need smog checks?

No. Motorcycles are exempt from California’s Smog Check Program.

What happens if my renewal notice says smog is required but I skip it?

You can pay your registration fees on time to avoid late penalties — but DMV won’t issue your registration or year sticker until the electronic smog certification is received.

Do diesel trucks need smog checks every 2 years?

Diesel vehicles model year 1998 and newer (14,000 lbs GVWR or less) follow the biennial program — but they do not get the 8-year new-vehicle exemption that gas cars get.
