TL;DR

  • Address: 885 Morning Star Dr, Sonora, CA 95370 — on Morning Star Drive off the Mono Way / Highway 108 corridor on the east side of town. Do not confuse it with the Social Security office at 745 Morning Star Drive — same street, different building, different agency.
  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday, every week. This is a full-time office — the only DMV field office in all of Tuolumne County.
  • This week: in the week of November 9–13, 2026, the office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday — and closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans Day, a state holiday when every California DMV field office is closed.
  • Phone: 1-800-777-0133, the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Sonora.
  • Appointments: recommended for faster service; behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Same-day check-in (Get in Line) runs 7:50 am–4:00 pm, Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm.
  • Kiosk here: no — this office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside, and no retail kiosk is listed near Sonora on the DMV’s own page. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Modesto field office, about 42 miles away in a straight line. A renewal trip here still works online, by mail, or through a partner — not at a kiosk.
  • No CDL test here: Sonora does not offer CDL road tests. Neither does San Andreas, Jackson, or Mariposa. The nearest CDL test site is the Modesto field office (124 Burney St, Modesto), about 42 miles away in a straight line.
  • The county picture: Tuolumne County has ONE DMV field office, not two and not three — Sonora (885 Morning Star Dr, full-time, no kiosk). Jamestown, Groveland, Columbia, Twain Harte, and Pinecrest have no DMV office at all; the DMV’s office pages for all five towns return a 404. Any office serves any Californian; pick by the service you need, not by the town line.
  • Skip the counter: registration renewals, driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses get no counter service — use dmv.ca.gov online services, a partner like the AAA Sonora Branch, or mail. There is no kiosk in this building to fall back on, so the online and partner channels matter more here than in a kiosk office.
  • Tests here: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle skills test, and the written knowledge test. Knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California.
  • Saturday option: the DMV office is closed on Saturdays, but the AAA Sonora Branch (1071 Sanguinetti Rd) handles registration-type DMV services on Saturdays, 9:00 am–5:00 pm, for members only. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.

885 Morning Star Dr, Sonora, CA 95370
Tuolumne County’s only DMV office — full-time office (Mon–Fri) with drive tests and REAL ID, no kiosk, no CDL test

1Sonora’s one-county DMV — and the verification that matters most

If you live anywhere in Tuolumne County, this is your DMV office — and it is the only one, in the county seat, which is the first thing this page has to tell you, because the rest of the county has nothing else. The field office at 885 Morning Star Drive is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a 9:00 am open on Wednesdays, and it handles the counter range the DMV lists for a field office: licensing, testing, title transfers, registration, plates, permits and placards, replacements, and records — eight service groups, one fewer than a kiosk office, because there is no self-service terminal here. Sonora is the county seat and the county’s only incorporated city — 5,003 people at the 2020 census, in a county of 55,620 people spread over 2,274 square miles — and it is the commercial center for some 100,000 people across Tuolumne, Calaveras, and northern Mariposa counties. The DMV office sits on Morning Star Drive off the Mono Way / Highway 108 corridor, at the junction of State Routes 49 and 108, which is why its appointment book carries the whole county’s traffic as well as Sonora’s own.

But the most important paragraph on this page is a verification, and it is the reason this page exists in its present form. The build note for this office asked whether Sonora is also the “nearest office” answer for its whole county. That angle is verified true here, and it is the opposite of what the last three county pages found. Watsonville turned out to share Santa Cruz County with Capitola; Yreka turned out to share Siskiyou County with Mount Shasta; Grass Valley turned out to share Nevada County with Truckee. Sonora shares Tuolumne County with nobody. The DMV’s field-office pages for every other Tuolumne County town return a 404 — Jamestown, Groveland, Columbia, Twain Harte, and Pinecrest all 404, checked on dmv.ca.gov on November 5, 2026 — so there is no second office hiding in a smaller town, no part-time Tuesday/Thursday office, and no limited-service facility. Sonora is the only DMV field office in Tuolumne County, and the nearest office for the whole county in the most literal sense: for a reader in Groveland, Twain Harte, Tuolumne, Pinecrest, Mi-Wuk Village, Long Barn, or Strawberry, there is no DMV office closer than this one, and there is no DMV office in their own town at all. Any California DMV office serves any Californian — you are not tied to the one nearest your address — so the honest question is never “which office is mine” but “which office has what I need, on the day I can go.” That question is the subject of sections 9 and 10.

The second most important paragraph is about the trips you do not need to make. The DMV’s own appointments page states that the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions “must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail.” In Sonora that list bites harder than it does in a kiosk office, because Sonora has no kiosk to send you to: for a renewal or a record, the answer is dmv.ca.gov, the AAA Sonora Branch, or mail — not a wait in the counter line, and not a kiosk in this building. And it bites harder still because there is no second office in the county to absorb a wasted trip: if you drive in from Groveland or Twain Harte for a renewal that has no counter service, you have driven an hour for nothing. If your task is a registration renewal or a record copy, do not book a counter appointment at all; do it online or through the AAA branch. If it is a REAL ID, a first license, a drive test, or a title transfer, the office is the place — book it, and bring the documents in section 11.

Two more identity facts before you go anywhere. First, this office is in Sonora, California, in Tuolumne County — not Sonora, Mexico, and not Sonora, Texas. Search results for “Sonora DMV” are California-clean, but one sentence here still keeps you from following the wrong map pin. Second, this page is an independent guide, not the DMV. We cannot book for you, we cannot see live slot availability, and we never charge for booking — booking on dmv.ca.gov is free, and any site charging a booking fee is not the DMV. Every office fact below — address, hours, services, payments, nearby offices, tests, kiosk, transit — was re-read on the official dmv.ca.gov pages on November 5, 2026, and cross-checked against a second source. Where a fact could not be verified, this page says so instead of printing a guess: no wait-time minutes, no review numbers, no fee amounts, no parking description, and no test route appear anywhere below.

2Address — Morning Star Drive, off the Mono Way / Highway 108 corridor

The Sonora DMV office is at 885 Morning Star Drive, Sonora, CA 95370. That address is confirmed three ways: the DMV’s own office page, the DMV’s own place data (which gives the same address and the coordinates 37.984657, −120.37019), and the independent dmvca.info location page — all agree on it. The office sits on Morning Star Drive off the Mono Way / Highway 108 corridor on the east side of town, at the junction of State Routes 49 and 108, in the county seat of Tuolumne County. Sonora is the commercial center for the whole county, so the office is on the county’s main road corridor rather than tucked away on a side street — and that is exactly why it carries the traffic it does.

One address warning matters more here than on most office pages, because the trap is on the same street. The Social Security Administration office sits at 745 Morning Star Drive — the same street, a different building, a different agency, open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you type “Morning Star Drive Sonora” into a map and follow the first government pin you see, you can walk into the wrong federal building for a DMV errand. The DMV field office is at 885 Morning Star Drive; the Social Security office is at 745 Morning Star Drive. Check the number before you park. There is no wrong-address scandal for the DMV office itself — no competitor page prints a different street for it — so the warning is the same-street one, and it is worth the paragraph because the two buildings share a street name and a government look.

Sonora’s place on the map is the rest of the address story. The city was founded in the summer of 1848 by miners from Sonora, Mexico — “Sonorian Camp” — and by the fall of 1849 it was the largest mining town for miles, with over 10,000 Mexican miners and 4,000 American and European miners in the district. Tuolumne County was created in February 1850 with Sonora as its county seat, and the city was incorporated on May 1, 1851, only the tenth city in California. It was known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines,” and it is still the county seat today — which is why the county’s one DMV office is here and nowhere else. Highway 108 runs east from Sonora toward the Sierra passes and west toward Modesto and the Central Valley; Highway 49 runs north toward Angels Camp, San Andreas, and Jackson and south toward Mariposa. Highway 120 through Groveland is the Yosemite road, and Tuolumne County calls itself the gateway to Yosemite National Park. The county’s two historic draws sit minutes from the office: Columbia State Historic Park, the best-preserved Gold Rush town in California, and Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown. None of that changes the DMV errand — but it explains why this one office, in this one town, serves a county of 55,620 people and a commercial region of about 100,000.

3Hours — five days a week, Wednesday opens at nine, and the Veterans Day week

The Sonora DMV office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays. That is the standard full-time pattern for a California DMV field office — five open days, a late Wednesday open, no weekend hours — and it is confirmed by two sources: the independent dmvca.info location page (verified June 5, 2026, closure checked October 31, 2026) and the DMV’s own place data, which lists the same hours. The office does not close for lunch; no lunch closure is listed for Sonora, and the DMV’s known lunch-closure offices (Alturas, Fall River Mills, Garberville, Weaverville) are all far to the north. Do not plan a lunch-break visit on the assumption of a midday closure — and do not plan a Saturday visit at all.

The week this page publishes in has one closure that matters more than the rest, because it falls mid-week and it is easy to miss. Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day, a California state holiday, and every DMV field office in the state is closed that day — the banner on the DMV’s own Sonora page says so in plain words: “All DMV field offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.” In the week of November 9–13, the office is therefore open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday only. The same applies to the part-time neighbours in section 10: San Andreas and Mariposa are open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, so in that week they are open Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 12 — and not Wednesday. If your errand can wait, Thursday, November 12 is the better day than Monday, November 9, because Mondays are the busiest day statewide and this office carries a whole county.

Two timing rules sit on top of the hours table, and both are statewide. First, written / knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California, so a permit test or a renewal knowledge test needs a morning or early-afternoon slot even though the office stays open until 5:00 pm. Second, the DMV publishes a live wait-times snapshot for every field office on its current wait-times page — appointment versus no-appointment, updated through the day — but it publishes no average and no minutes, so this page prints no wait-time figure for Sonora. Check the live page on the morning you plan to go, and treat the first and last week of the month, and Mondays, as the busiest times: that is the statewide pattern the independent guides report, and it applies with extra force to a one-office county, where there is no second office to spread the load.

4Services at this office

The DMV’s Sonora page lists eight service groups, and the list is the whole story of what the counter does. The most useful thing about the list is what is not on it: there is no “Self Service Terminals” line, which is how the DMV’s own page tells you there is no kiosk in this building. Modesto, Manteca, and Turlock carry a “Kiosk Available” tag on their pages; Sonora does not. The eight groups are the standard full-service set, and they are the reason this office exists: everything a first-time applicant, a new resident, or a title transfer needs, in the county seat, five days a week.

Three service facts deserve their own sentences because they decide whether your trip is necessary at all. First, REAL ID is offered here — a first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit with original documents, and section 7 has the list. Second, CDL road tests are not offered here: Sonora is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither is San Andreas, Jackson, or Mariposa. The nearest CDL test site is the Modesto field office, about 42 miles away in a straight line — section 10 has the full picture. Third, the phone is the statewide number only: 1-800-777-0133. No office-direct number is published for Sonora; the only phone numbers on the DMV’s Sonora page belong to the AAA branch. The automated system is available 24 hours a day, and live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Payment at the counter follows the statewide list the DMV prints on every office page: cash, check, credit card, debit card, digital wallet, and money order. That is the full list for Sonora, verified on the office page itself. Do not bring a payment method outside that list and expect the counter to take it. And one more service boundary: the DMV does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license or ID card renewal (unless your renewal notice specifies an in-person visit), driver and vehicle records, or replacement driver’s licenses. Those transactions must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail. In Sonora, with no kiosk in the building, that means dmv.ca.gov, the AAA Sonora Branch, or mail — and section 8 works through the options in order.

5Appointments: how to book, what needs one, and walk-ins

An appointment at the Sonora DMV is recommended for faster service but not required for most counter services — the same rule as every California field office. Book online at dmv.ca.gov/portal/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133, choose Sonora as the office, and pick a time. Booking is free; the DMV charges no booking fee, and any site charging one is not the DMV. For driver’s license and ID card transactions, appointment slots only open after you submit the online application first — complete it, then return to book. Bring a printed or on-screen confirmation; appointment holders use a separate, faster line than walk-ins.

The exception is the one that matters most to test-takers: behind-the-wheel driving tests are appointment-only. There is no walk-in drive test at Sonora or anywhere else in California. If you arrive without a drive-test appointment, you will be turned away for that test, and in a one-office county that means a second drive from wherever you came from — Jamestown, Groveland, Columbia, Twain Harte, or Tuolumne. Book the drive test first, then plan the drive. The same appointment-only logic applies to any test that needs an examiner’s time; the written knowledge test is the more flexible one, but it still has the 4:30 pm cutoff, so a late-afternoon arrival for a permit test is a wasted trip even with an appointment.

For same-day visits without an appointment, the DMV’s Get in Line system is the way in. It is the same-day electronic check-in: join the queue before you arrive, get a text when your turn approaches, and wait somewhere other than the lobby. Two facts about Get in Line are worth stating plainly, because the internet still gets both wrong. First, Get in Line was never discontinued — it is still live, and the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. Second, the queue opens ten minutes before the office does: 7:50 am to 4:00 pm, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 8:50 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays, verified on this site’s own live Service Advisor flow on November 4, 2026. Appointment holders are still served first, so a walk-in should expect to wait, and should arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. The DMV stops admitting new walk-ins before closing so that everyone already in the queue can be served; do not arrive at 4:45 pm expecting to be seen.

Do not book an appointment for a transaction that has no counter service. Registration renewals, license and ID renewals (unless your notice says in-person), driver and vehicle records, and replacement licenses cannot be booked at the counter at all — the scheduler will not offer you a slot for them, because the counter does not do them. Do those online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail. And if you already have an appointment and need to change it, the DMV’s View/Cancel flow asks for your first name, last name, and telephone number — there is no confirmation-number field, and no confirmation number is needed to look an appointment up. That correction, verified live on the DMV’s own flow, is worth knowing before you go hunting through old emails for a number that does not exist.

6Driving tests at Sonora: behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — and the CDL gap

Sonora offers three test types, and the table below is the whole of it. Behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests are all available here; CDL road tests are not, and no other office in Tuolumne County offers them either, because there is no other office in Tuolumne County. The nearest CDL test site is Modesto, and section 10 gives the distance and the address. For the three tests Sonora does offer, the rules are the statewide ones, and they are worth reading before you book, because a failed preparation costs a whole-county drive back.

TestAt Sonora?What to know
Behind-the-wheel drive testYesAppointment-only. Bring a licensed driver and a safe, registered vehicle. The pre-drive safety check comes first.
Motorcycle skills testYesOffered at this office; book an appointment. Bring your own motorcycle and helmet.
Written knowledge testYesNot given after 4:30 pm anywhere in California. All questions come from the California Driver Handbook.
CDL road testNot offered at SonoraNearest CDL test site is the Modesto field office, 124 Burney St, Modesto — about 42 miles away in a straight line. Appointment-only.

The behind-the-wheel test is the one most readers are booking, so it gets the detail. The DMV’s own test-preparation page describes two parts: the pre-drive safety check and the Driving Performance Evaluation. The pre-drive check is the part people fail without ever leaving the parking lot: the examiner checks that the vehicle is safe and legal — lights, signals, horn, brakes, tires, mirrors, seat belts, registration, and insurance — and that you know where the controls are. The on-road portion is a short drive, typically ten to fifteen minutes, on residential and major streets around the office: turning, lane changes, stopping, parking, and safe merging. There is no freeway portion and no parallel parking in California’s test. The DMV publishes no test route for Sonora or any other office, so do not memorise streets from a forum post; prepare for the pre-drive check and the standard skills instead, and practise on the roads around Morning Star Drive, Mono Way, and Highway 108 so the hill and highway junctions feel familiar.

Book early, because Sonora carries the whole county. Sonora High School has 880 students (2024 CBEDS enrollment), and the Sonora Union High School District’s 2023–24 enrollment was 1,085, with Summerville High in Tuolumne as the county’s other comprehensive high school — so every teen permit and every first drive test in a 2,274-square-mile county funnels through this one office’s appointment book, along with every adult test in Jamestown, Columbia, Groveland, Twain Harte, and Tuolumne. If the week you want is full, the alternatives in section 10 are the answer, and San Andreas on a Tuesday or Thursday is the closest one. Two driving schools serve Sonora for the six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training California requires for teens under 18: AllGood Driving School, DMV-approved and teaching in Sonora since 1997, with behind-the-wheel lessons across Sonora, Angels Camp, Murphys, San Andreas, and the surrounding towns; and Coastline Academy, with Sonora and East Sonora locations and DMV-certified instructors, whose lessons practise on CA-108 and CA-49. Either school can do the mock test and the first-lesson permit validation; neither can book your DMV test for you. Retake rules are not printed here because the DMV’s retake interval is a live rule, not a fixed fact on this page — check dmv.ca.gov before you rebook.

7REAL ID at Sonora

Yes, you can get a REAL ID at the Sonora DMV — and for most readers, this office is the only place in the county to get one. A first-time REAL ID is an in-person visit: it cannot be done online, at a kiosk, or through a partner, and the AAA Sonora Branch cannot do it. Bring originals, not copies: proof of identity (such as a valid U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate), proof of Social Security number (such as a Social Security card or a W-2), and two proofs of California residency (such as a utility bill, a bank statement, or a rental agreement showing your current address). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit, because a missing document means a second trip — and in a one-office county, a second trip is a second drive from wherever in the county you came from.

REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights and entry to certain federal facilities began May 7, 2025. A standard California license or ID card no longer works for those purposes; a REAL ID, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted document does. If you already hold a REAL ID and are renewing, the renewal may be possible online unless your notice says an in-person visit is required — check the notice, not the habit. If you are upgrading for the first time, book an appointment rather than walking in: the document check takes longer than a simple renewal, and a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip if the queue closes before your turn. The office is open five days a week for this, and the appointment book is the way to be sure of a slot.

One county-shape point belongs in this section, because it is the reason the document list matters more here than in a city with three offices. Sonora is the only DMV field office in Tuolumne County, and it is also the only place in the county where a first REAL ID can be issued. San Andreas and Mariposa both offer REAL ID too — they are full field offices on their two open days — but they are 21.7 and about 40 miles away in a straight line, and both are open Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Jackson offers it as well, about 32.7 miles away. If your documents are wrong, the nearest place that can fix the problem is still this office, on its next open day. Check the list twice, bring originals, and book the appointment.

8No kiosk at Sonora — the AAA branch, and how to skip the trip

The Sonora field office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside. The DMV’s own Sonora page lists eight services and none of them is “Self Service Terminals,” and no retail kiosk is listed anywhere near Sonora on that page either. That is the whole kiosk answer for this office, and it is also the whole kiosk answer for Tuolumne County: no field office in the county has one, because there is only one field office in the county, and it does not. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Modesto field office (124 Burney St, Modesto), about 42 miles away in a straight line. Manteca’s field office has a kiosk too, about 48 miles away in a straight line, and Turlock’s does as well, about 43 miles away — but Modesto is the nearest, and Modesto is also the nearest CDL test site, so it is the recommendation for both errands. A kiosk prints registration stickers and handles renewals and records; it cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test.

The AAA Sonora Branch is the only partner on the DMV’s Sonora page, and it is the Saturday option this page promises. It sits at 1071 Sanguinetti Road, Sonora, phone 1-209-536-2540, open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, closed Sundays, and its DMV services are for members only. One conflict is worth noting honestly: AAA’s own website lists its DMV service hours as Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, slightly shorter than the branch hours on the DMV’s page. This page uses the DMV page’s figures; check AAA’s own page before a Saturday drive if the half hour matters to you. The branch handles registration-type DMV services — the paperwork a member would otherwise do at the counter — and it cannot do licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, or any test. Those are field-office-only, which in Tuolumne County means this office.

One more partner warning, because the internet makes this mistake easy. A dmv.ca.gov page titled “Sonora Registration Services” exists, and a careless directory could present it as a Sonora business. It is not one: the page is a statewide partner-lookup listing, and the businesses it names are in Fontana, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Norco — hundreds of miles from Sonora. This page does not list it as a partner, and neither should any directory you trust. The verified partner list for Sonora is one name long: the AAA Sonora Branch. For every town in Tuolumne County, the answer to “which DMV do I go to” is the same office, and the table below says so town by town, because a reader in Groveland should not have to guess. There is no second office to compare against, no part-time office to check first, and no “nearest office” contest to run. The comparison that matters for a Tuolumne County reader is not Sonora versus another Tuolumne office — it is Sonora versus the part-time offices over the county lines, and that comparison is section 10. This section is the county map: one office, five days a week, for every community below.

The two part-time neighbours deserve a sentence here even though they are not Tuolumne County offices, because they are the offices a Sonora reader meets first when this one is booked. San Andreas, the Calaveras County seat office, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and offers the same test types as Sonora — behind-the-wheel, motorcycle, and written — with REAL ID and no CDL test. Mariposa, the Mariposa County office, is also open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, offers REAL ID and the behind-the-wheel and written tests, and carries no motorcycle-test tag on its listing. Neither is a substitute for a five-day office if you need a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, and neither has a kiosk. But on a Tuesday or Thursday, either is a real alternative, and San Andreas at 21.7 miles in a straight line is the closest office to Sonora of any kind. The full alternatives table, with distances and the CDL and kiosk picture, is section 10.

One more county fact, because it explains the shape of the whole page. Tuolumne County is 2,274 square miles with about 25 people per square mile, and Sonora is its only incorporated city. The county’s two largest employers are the Sierra Conservation Center, a state prison, and Adventist Health Sonora — which is why the office’s appointment book carries not only residents but the people who work in the county’s two biggest institutions and the visitors who drive in from Calaveras and northern Mariposa counties, where the local offices are part-time. The DMV’s own place data puts the Sonora office at 37.984657, −120.37019 — the pin to check before you drive, not the pin of the Social Security office down the street.

10If Sonora is closed or booked: the nearest alternatives

Sonora is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, state holidays, and the occasional renovation — and its appointment book can fill, because one office serves a whole county. When that happens, the alternatives below are the answer, in order of distance. Read the hours column before you drive: the two closest alternatives are both open Tuesdays and Thursdays only, so a Monday booking problem is not solved by driving to San Andreas. The first full-time alternative is Jackson, about 32.7 miles away in a straight line. The nearest kiosk and the nearest CDL test site are both Modesto, about 42 miles away in a straight line. All distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer, and the mountain roads make the difference bigger than the numbers suggest — Highway 108 east of Sonora climbs toward the Sierra, and the drive to Jackson or Modesto is a valley drive, not a straight line.

The no-fallback lesson is the point of this section, and it is sharper here than on any city page. When the Watsonville office closed for renovations in April and May 2024, Santa Cruz County still had Capitola. When the Capitola office closed in June 2025, the county still had Watsonville. When the Sonora office is closed — a state holiday, a renovation, a bad-weather day on Highway 108 — Tuolumne County has no DMV field office at all that day. The nearest open office is San Andreas, 21.7 miles away in a straight line, and only if the closure falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. On any other day, it is Jackson or Modesto. That is why the Veterans Day table in section 3 matters, why the appointment book matters, and why the online and partner channels in section 8 matter: for a renewal or a record, you never need the office at all, and on a closure day, the office cannot help you anyway.

For CDL drivers, the picture is simpler and longer. Sonora does not offer CDL road tests, and neither does San Andreas, Jackson, or Mariposa — all four are tagged “No CDL test.” The DMV’s own driving-test-sites list names Modesto as a CDL skills-test office, and the DMV’s March 2026 release about the Fresno Commercial Drive Test Center’s temporary closure names the Modesto field office at 124 Burney St as one of the nearest offices that conduct CDL skills tests. Modesto is about 42 miles from Sonora in a straight line, and it is also the nearest verified kiosk, so a CDL applicant and a renewal customer drive to the same town for different reasons. Book the CDL test by appointment — CDL skills tests are appointment-only — and do not drive to Modesto expecting a walk-in test.

11Best time to visit — what to bring — and getting there without a car

No Sonora-specific wait-time figure is published, and this page prints none. The DMV’s wait-times page is a live snapshot, not an average, and no source publishes a minutes figure for this office. What the independent guides report is a statewide pattern, and it is labelled as one: early mornings, right at opening, and mid-week afternoons are quietest; the first and last week of the month, plus Mondays, are busiest. That pattern bites harder in a one-office county, where the whole county’s first-of-the-month renewals and Monday appointments land on the same book. If you can choose, pick a Tuesday or Thursday mid-morning, and avoid the first and last week of the month. If you cannot choose, book the appointment and arrive at opening — the appointment line moves first, and the walk-in queue behind it does not.

Your errandBringBook?
First-time REAL IDProof of identity (original), proof of Social Security number, two proofs of California residency (originals only)Yes — book an appointment; check the document list on dmv.ca.gov first
First driver’s license / permit testProof of identity, proof of residency, and the completed online application; teens bring the driver-education certificate (DL 400C) and a parent or guardianYes — book; knowledge tests not after 4:30 pm

Motorcycle skills testYour motorcycle, helmet, license or permit, and appointment confirmationYes — book an appointment
Title transferThe signed title, a bill of sale if you have one, your ID, and the vehicle’s registration informationRecommended — book to skip the walk-in line

Registration renewal / records / replacement licenseDo not bring anything to the counter — there is no counter serviceNo — do it online, at the Modesto kiosk, with the AAA Sonora Branch, or by mail

New residents get their own paragraph, because the deadlines are the ones the internet reverses. If you move to California, vehicle registration is due within 20 days (California Vehicle Code section 4152.5) and a California driver’s license is due within 10 days (Vehicle Code section 12505(c)). The numbers are not interchangeable: twenty days for the car, ten days for the license. A new resident who needs both should book the license visit first, because the ten-day clock is the shorter one, and bring the out-of-state license, proof of identity, proof of residency, and the vehicle’s title and registration. Sonora is the office for that errand for the whole county — and the only office for it — so a new resident in Jamestown or Groveland books here, not in a town that has no office.

Getting there without a car is possible but needs planning, because no bus route is published as stopping at the DMV’s door. Tuolumne County Transit runs fixed Routes 1 to 4 on weekdays between Sonora, Jamestown, Columbia, Tuolumne, Twain Harte, Sierra Village, and Groveland, Monday to Friday 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, and the Transit Center is the county’s hub; the transit office is at 13033 Sanguinetti Road, Sonora, phone 209-532-0404. The old Route 6 area — Sonora, Crystal Falls, Phoenix Lake, and Sonora Meadows — is now served by a General Public Dial-a-Ride: call dispatch at 532-0404 with two to four hours of lead time, fare $3.00, Monday to Friday roughly 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. The transit system also runs a historic trolley on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day and a Ski Bus to Dodge Ridge in the winter. Check Tuolumne County Transit’s schedules for the stop nearest 885 Morning Star Drive before you travel; do not assume a route serves the office’s door, because none is published as doing so. Drivers have the easier trip: Sonora sits at the junction of State Routes 49 and 108, and Highway 120 through Groveland is the Yosemite road — the county calls itself the gateway to Yosemite National Park, and the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation system serves the Sonora/Groveland corridor to Yosemite Valley on a seasonal schedule.

12Why this office matters: the county’s only DMV, and the errors the internet makes about it

Sonora is the county seat and the only incorporated city in Tuolumne County, and its DMV office is the county’s only DMV — the two facts are the same fact, and they are why this page exists. The city had 5,003 people at the 2020 census and the county had 55,620, and the office serves all of them, plus the roughly 100,000 people in the commercial region across Tuolumne, Calaveras, and northern Mariposa counties who drive in because their own offices are part-time or further away. The city was founded in the summer of 1848 by miners from Sonora, Mexico, and it was the largest mining town for miles by the fall of 1849; the Foreign Miners Tax of 1850 drove out nearly 2,000 Mexican, Chilean, and French residents and cut the town’s population almost in half, and the town still became the county seat in February 1850 and the tenth incorporated city in California on May 1, 1851. It was known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines,” and the Bonanza Mine once yielded 990 pounds of gold ore in a single week. That history is not the DMV errand — but it is the reason the office is where it is, and why there is no other one: the county seat has held the county’s government, its courthouse, and its DMV since the county was created, and the other towns never got one.

That is also why the errors about this office matter more than they would for a small-town office. The search results for “Sonora DMV” mislead in three quiet ways. First, the “Sonora Registration Services” title trap: a dmv.ca.gov page of that name reads like a Sonora business, but it is a statewide partner-lookup listing whose businesses are in Fontana, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Norco. A directory that copies the title without reading the page lists a partner that does not exist in Sonora. Second, the same-street trap: the Social Security office at 745 Morning Star Drive shares the DMV’s street, and a map search for “Morning Star Drive Sonora government” can send a reader to the wrong federal building. Third, the “another office in my town” assumption: a reader in Jamestown or Groveland who assumes every Gold Country town has a DMV will drive to a town whose DMV page returns a 404. The fix is boring and it is the whole point of this page: the correct address, 885 Morning Star Drive; the correct hours, Monday to Friday with a 9:00 am Wednesday open; the correct county picture, one office, not two and not three; the correct kiosk answer, no, with Modesto as the nearest; and the correct Saturday answer, closed, with the AAA Sonora Branch as the weekend fallback. Check the address, check the day, book before you drive — and if your errand is a renewal, do it online or through the AAA branch and do not wait in the counter line at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the address of the Sonora DMV office?

885 Morning Star Drive, Sonora, CA 95370, on Morning Star Drive off the Mono Way / Highway 108 corridor on the east side of town, at the junction of State Routes 49 and 108. Do not confuse it with the Social Security office at 745 Morning Star Drive — same street, different building, different agency.

What are the Sonora DMV hours?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, and Wednesday 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday, every week, and closed on state holidays — including Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day).

Is the Sonora DMV open on Saturday?

No. The Sonora field office is closed every Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday DMV option in Sonora is the AAA Sonora Branch (1071 Sanguinetti Rd), which handles registration-type DMV services on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, for members only. Licenses, REAL ID, and tests have no Saturday option here.

Do I need an appointment at the Sonora DMV?

An appointment is recommended for faster service but is not required for most counter services; same-day check-in (Get in Line) is available, with the queue open 7:50 am–4:00 pm (Wednesdays 8:50 am–4:00 pm). The exception is the behind-the-wheel driving test, which is appointment-only. Book at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment or call 1-800-777-0133. Booking is free. Do not book an appointment for a registration renewal, license or ID renewal, record request, or replacement license — those have no counter service and must be done online, at a kiosk, with a partner, or by mail.

Can I walk into the Sonora DMV without an appointment?

Yes, for most services, through Get in Line, the DMV’s same-day electronic check-in — but expect to wait, because appointment holders are served first. Arrive right at opening for the shortest lines. Get in Line is still live; the QR Virtual Intake system rolled out in April 2026 is an addition to it, not a replacement. This is a statewide pattern; no Sonora-specific wait time is published.

Does the Sonora DMV do driving tests?

Yes — behind-the-wheel tests, motorcycle skills tests, and written knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel tests require an appointment, and knowledge tests are not given after 4:30 pm. It does NOT offer CDL road tests: Sonora is tagged “No CDL test,” and neither San Andreas, Jackson, nor Mariposa offers one either. The nearest CDL test site is the Modesto field office (124 Burney St, Modesto), about 42 miles away in a straight line. No test route is published for this office — the DMV does not publish routes — so prepare for the pre-drive check and the standard skills (turning, lane changes, parking, safe merging) instead of memorizing streets.

Can I get a REAL ID at the Sonora DMV?

Yes. A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit with proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency (originals only). Check the exact document list on the DMV’s REAL ID page before your visit. REAL ID enforcement for domestic flights began May 7, 2025. Book an appointment — a walk-in REAL ID visit risks a wasted trip, because the document check takes longer than a simple renewal. The AAA Sonora Branch cannot do REAL ID.

Is there a DMV kiosk at the Sonora DMV?

No — the Sonora field office does not have a self-service DMV Now kiosk inside, and no retail kiosk is listed near Sonora on the DMV’s own office page. The nearest verified kiosk is inside the Modesto field office (124 Burney St, Modesto), about 42 miles away in a straight line. Manteca’s field office has a kiosk too, about 48 miles away, and Turlock’s as well, about 43 miles away — but Modesto is the nearest. A kiosk cannot do a first REAL ID, a first license, or a drive test.

What is the phone number for the Sonora DMV?

1-800-777-0133 — the statewide DMV number. No office-direct number is published for Sonora; the only phone numbers on the DMV’s Sonora page belong to the AAA Sonora Branch. The automated system is available 24 hours a day; live agents are available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Is the Sonora DMV the only DMV in Tuolumne County?

Yes. Sonora is the only DMV field office in Tuolumne County — the DMV’s field-office pages for Jamestown, Groveland, Columbia, Twain Harte, and Pinecrest all return a 404, checked November 5, 2026. Sonora is also the county seat and the county’s only incorporated city. Every town in the county — Jamestown, Columbia, Groveland, Twain Harte, Tuolumne, Pinecrest, Mi-Wuk Village, Long Barn, Strawberry — uses this one office.

What is the closest DMV to Sonora if this office is closed or booked?

San Andreas, about 21.7 miles away in a straight line, with the same hours pattern except it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays only — check the day before you drive. Jackson is about 32.7 miles away and is the first full-time alternative. Mariposa is about 40 miles away (Tuesdays and Thursdays only). Modesto is about 42 miles away, full-time, with a kiosk inside and the nearest CDL test site. Distances are straight-line figures; road distances are longer. If Sonora is closed, Tuolumne County has no DMV field office at all that day.

Can I renew my vehicle registration at the Sonora DMV?

You can, but you should not need a counter visit at all: registration renewals have no counter service and are handled online at dmv.ca.gov, at a DMV Now kiosk, with a DMV partner, or by mail. In Sonora there is no kiosk in the office, so use dmv.ca.gov, the Modesto field office kiosk, or the AAA Sonora Branch (1071 Sanguinetti Rd), members only, DMV services Mon–Fri 9:00 am–6:00 pm and Sat 9:00 am–5:00 pm.

Book Before You Drive to Sonora

Sonora is open five days a week, but it is the only DMV office in all of Tuolumne County — and its drive-test slots are the scarcest appointments in the county. Check the day, book on dmv.ca.gov before you drive, and if your errand is a renewal or a record, use dmv.ca.gov, the Modesto kiosk, or the AAA Sonora Branch instead of waiting in the counter line.
